Part 2: US Airways (Envoy) DUB-PHL, US Exp:PHL-LGA

Sun May 17, 2009 9:30 pm

Here is part two of my trip to Ireland. The 1st part is titles "British Airways (Club World) JFK-LHR, BMI: LHR-DUB"

Driving on the M1, heading for the City Centre:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13614.jpg

The famous Dublin tunnel:

A look at the hall of my Grandmothers house:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13630.jpg

The house was built in the late 1950s. Kitchen:

A few pictures of the city:

The spire:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13644.jpg

The GPO (as featured in my fav Irish movie, Michael Collins):

Carlton:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13649.jpg

My other favorite British shop:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13650.jpg

This one’s not bad either:

FR just after takeoff. Taken from near the M1:

FR with a big boy from the Americas above it heading further into Europe:

Some random road in County Dublin:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13669.jpg

We were heading up to Drogheda, County Louth to visit my Aunt and cousins.

A small country road in County Meath:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13683.jpg

Drogheda town:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13690.jpg

Those are the only pictures I took while in Ireland. We had about 3 days in Dublin, really just checking in on my Nana.

We got up at about 8am on the 12th of May to head to DUB. We took back our rental car and then took the Thrifty courtesy van back to the terminal. It’s a shame it drops ya off at Arrivals…we were not in the mood to walk up. But I did get a nice view of the new terminal. Photos below:

New:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13726.jpg

Old:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13727.jpg

New:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13728.jpg

I was trying to take a picture of the check-in desk…it came out badly and I was about to take another one when a security official approached me and told me I was not allowed to take photos at check-in. Strange.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13730.jpg

Check-in took a while….plus we had to go over to the US Airways ticket desk…as something went wrong with out Non-Rev reservation. It took a while to get fixed…and I’m not really sure what was wrong to be honest.

At Dublin, we thankfully have the luxury of Pre-Clearance into the United States. It’s a great thing…even though sometimes the line in Dublin is 10 times longer than it would be in Philadelphia or JFK. Not today…today everything from security to immigration went smoothly and quickly.

Best picture I could get of our plane:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13732.jpg

Boarding area:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13735.jpg

This area gets too crowded…its too small an area for so many international flights. I’m sure if any of you fly transatlantic out of Dublin, you know what I’m talking about.

The jetway is lined with a funny Vodaphone advertisement, showing New York City police and Fire Department working on Dublin streets.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13738.jpg

Boarding our US Airways 757:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13740.jpg

I was seated in 1C in Envoy class. Older Envoy seats…but still comfortable.

These are actually 2A&C:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13741.jpg

Legroom for our 1A&C:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13743.jpg

The first row in Envoy has less legroom than the other rows…but I had no issues with it.

My coat was taken for me and after we sat down we were offered either…

A memosa:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13745.jpg

Or Orange juice

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13744.jpg

The F/A then came around with newspapers.

My Dad took the USA TODAY

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13748.jpg

I took the Irish Independent and the Metro:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13777.jpg

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13747.jpg

Then came the vanity packs.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13752.jpg

I really like the little pouch. It has the US flag on it with “Envoy” written on it. I see no difference between the British Airways one and the US Airways one, when I think I should see one. That’s the real only thing that BA disappointed me by.

Then came the menus:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13749.jpg

The choices today…

Appetizers

A seasonal mixed salad served with your selection of Feta cheese wrapped in thin slices of grilled zucchini garnished with a slice of cheery tomato.

Skewered marinated prawns accompanied by a cherry tomato stuffed with Boursin cheese

Cantaloupe wedges wrapped with thin slices of prosciutto.

Entrees

Mushroom-stuffed Chicken Breast
Tender chicken breast stuffed with mushrooms and herbed cream cheese, served with a balsamic vinegar reduction, and presented with green beans, carrots, and au gratin potatoes.

Sole Roulade
Poached sole topped with a crab meat, brandy, and wine reduction, garnished with crawfish tails, accompanied by snow peas and linguini.

Penne with Vegetable Bolognese
Penne rigatoni with arugula and mozzarella cheese, topped with hearty vegetable Bolognese and fresh mushrooms.

Express Meal

You may request this chilled meal as a single course, complete with an appetizer and a dessert, to give you more time to work, relax, or sleep.

Roast Filet of Beef Salad
Thinly-sliced Choice beef filet fanned with grilled zucchini atop a bed of fresh mixed salad greens, sprinkled with feta cheese crumbles and roasted cherry tomatoes.

Dessert

Apricot caramel tart or passion fruit vanilla tart and a selection of cheese and grapes

I was impressed with the menu….not only because of what I consider a nice variety of choices, but also because it was printed in both English and Gaelic. A nice touch, I though.

Shortly after take off the F/A came around with hot towels

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13768.jpg

And the ear phones for the IFE system:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13771.jpg

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13772.jpg

Very nice earphones…shame the US Airways IFE is so bad.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13773.jpg

F/As come around with a portable TV and have to plug it into your chair. Its not a great system. Also..it has NO map!!!! Not good…

Next was some Spring! water:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13774.jpg

Some lovely hot nuts and a Diet Coke, in a nice looking glass:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13779.jpg

Not too long after this...it was time for lunch:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13780.jpg

The appetizers were good. I love the pretzel bread that I’ve only ever had on US Airways Envoy.

My dad got the beef:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13785.jpg

I got the Penne:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13790.jpg

Which was very good:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13791.jpg

Dessert:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13793.jpg

A view of the snacking station:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13795.jpg

It has on offer a variety of snacks ranging from SunChips to a cranberry snack mix.

After things settled down, I got comfy with this nice pillow:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13804.jpg

..and watched Valkery:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13798.jpg

I love catching up on my movies while I fly.

About one hour to landing, the F/A came around with more hot towels and some fresh orange juice:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13803.jpg

Not long after that a light lunch was served. It was toasted French baguette with pastrami, arugula, and a Gruyere cheese spread.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13813.jpg

After that was collected, some Lily O’Brien’s chocolates were handed out:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13816.jpg

US:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13840.jpg

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13849.jpg

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13850.jpg

It was a very nice flight. Now…we needed to rush. We landed at about 1330 and our planned connection was at 1440. It was about 1405 when we got out of immigration. We rushed over to transfer our bags and got on the line for security. We were told to go to Gate A1 and take a shuttle to the F express gates for our US Airways Express flight to LGA.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13854.jpg

The line at security was humongous. We decided that if we were going to have any chance at getting to our flight, we would try and run to the F gates from outside the airport. So we got off the line and exited the airport. My dad stopped a Embassy Suites shuttle bus driver and asked for a lift to F…he was kind enough to give us that life.

The driver really saved our day. He was so kind and even offered us water to drink. It was great to see someone so caring. We rushed past security and walked up to our gate at around 1430. We literally just made it! It was thrilling, to be honest.

Our Dash-8 to LGA:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13859.jpg

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/SDC13860.jpg

Taxi:

We were never cleared above 8.000 feet and floated in and out of the clouds…which lead to a rather bumpy flight. Sadly, because of this the drink service was cancelled.

That’s all for now, I hope this has not been a waste of your time. Comments are welcomed. Thanks  Smile

Great trip report and photos JFKMAN, it seems like every time you and your dad fly you are able to get upgraded, your very lucky. Both your Transatlantic crossings looked enjoyable with some very appealing food on both airlines. My wife and I had the pleasure of the pre flight dinner in the JFK BA Terraces lounge a few years ago, it was a great way to start a transatlantc trip.

Great Job

Hi , Great report. I have wanted to see an Envoy DUB-PHL for a long time now with pics of the seats and meals so thanks alot for that. Doesnt look too bad , better than I thought. Seats a bit dated though considering the competition.

Funny to see pictures of the Jervis Centre Dublin and Drogheda, another 35 mins North and its where I live.

Thanks again

Smile Thanks for the comments. These are old seats....the new ones are much nicer. Although the seats in this TR are very comfy still.

WOW, Drogheda!! My grandparents lived ther (most of my Mum's family still do). I spent many a happy Summer there when I was a kid....of course, the new shiny white bridge wasn't there...nor was the shopping centre....it was all industrial and quay side buildings.

Nice report and cracking photos.

RE: Part 2: US Airways (Envoy) DUB-PHL, US Exp:PHL-LGA

Mon May 18, 2009 4:32 pm

Hi Tommy,

Nice follow-up.

The US flights seemed pretty good, the meals in Envoy looked quite well presented. I 've had a few Envoy flights in teh past and have to say they were pretty good, flown on a mix of 333 & 762's.

The seats look a bit dated now, will be interesting to see what they are fitting to the new 332 fleet.

Quoting JFKMan (Thread starter):
I really like the little pouch. It has the US flag on it with “Envoy” written on it

- They have been issuing this pouch thing for years! - I actually prefer the BA bag, whilst nothing special, at least it has a zip to keep stuff safe - when travelling I keep the passport, I-phone, camera in it, along withother stuff I like to keep to hand on the plane.

Regards

Mark

You took good pics, thanks for sharing.

I was trying to take a picture of the check-in desk…it came out badly and I was about to take another one when a security official approached me and told me I was not allowed to take photos at check-in. Strange.

This is really stupid; I got barked at for taking pics around the area you boarded in Pier B at DUB and there's no need for it. In SNN they give you advice on where to take the best pics!

Hi JFKMan,

Great report, loved the pictures of Dublin and the country roads, something we take for granted, pity though that you gay barked at for taking a few pics at the airport, and as AmricanShamrok said that its a pity that you could have been advised on where to take your photo, they may take a leaf out of the book of the Embassy Suites shuttle driver!.

Thats cool! Drogheda is a cool little place.

Hey, cool report! How did you like the Dash 8? One of my favorite rides, although their interiors leave a lot to be desired. I will be going to Ireland next May and am trying to decide between Delta, UsAirways, and a $300 price difference. I also have never flown through PHL, but Atlanta many, many times.

I'd urge you to give US Airways a try. I personally think they do a really nice job, transatlantic wise. Also...PHL is a really nice airport to transfer in.

Well done, a great report. US looks good in J Class, metal cutlery and all! I don't think I'd want to spend 7h with them in Y, though!

Glad you enjoyed your trip to Ireland; come as often as you can ... we need the business!

Thats because that area in Pier B is a US immigration facility, and technically you are on US soil. The US forbids photography of its Immigration and Customs facilities. Try taking a photo at US immigration in SNN and see how far you get.....  Wink, then again, just try being nice at US immigration in SNN and see how far you get...

There's a particularly nasty female immigration officer there who has a tendency towards shouting at you just for answering the questions she asks you... I have had the pleasure of her (not in the biblical sense of course) on about 5 occasions now. Such a lovely woman.....

Yes they did, onthe international flight only. They showed the old and out of date one that use to be shown on domestic.

F/As come around with a portable TV and have to plug it into your chair. Its not a great system. Also..it has NO map!!!! Not good…

Thanks, I always wondered what they did for TVs in Envoy on the 757.

It was a very nice flight. Now…we needed to rush. We landed at about 1330 and our planned connection was at 1440. It was about 1405 when we got out of immigration.

If you precleared in DUB why did you have to go again in PHL?

You don't preclear customs as well in DUB?
The Caribbean stations I have visited that have pre-clearance clears everything. You get off the plane in the US free to go wherever you want.

That is FPO, NAS, and AUA

Thanks for posting - good report.

Gave me a good idea of what it's like to fly Envoy with US Air.
I'm sorry, but the presentation of that food is totally unacceptable for a business class
product. Can you imagine being served something that looked like a dog's breakfast
on SQ/CX/JL etc?

Fine when you're non-rev, but if I was paying for it I would not have been impressed.

IFE looked awful too. Don't think I'll be flying US anytime soon!

But thanks for posting - enjoyed the report all the same.
