First Time On AirTran – IND-ATL-DFW

Sun Jul 19, 2009 11:40 pm

This is my first TR on Airliners.net, so please, be nice  Silly I’ll try to make it as short and painless as possible, but no promises.
So, every year, around a month before the start of school, I visit my aunt and uncle, who live in the region of Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas. This year, however, was a very nice change in plans. I get to FLY! Normally, my family would drive to Memphis, then I’d ride the rest of the way with my aunt and uncle, which meant a 15 hour drive altogether. Well, me being an aviation nutter, flying was so much more exhilarating.
So my aunt and uncle picked the cheapest flights, which ended up being on AirTran.
My final itinerary:

Return
Thu, Jul 23, 2009 Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, (DFW) to Indianapolis, (IND)
Depart: 05:30 AM
Arrive: 08:39 AM Dallas/Ft Worth, TX (DFW) to
Atlanta, GA (ATL) AirTran Airways
Flight 105
(on Boeing 717)
1 Stop - change planes Atlanta, GA (ATL)
Connection Time: 41mins
Depart: 09:20 AM
Arrive: 10:55 AM Atlanta, GA (ATL) to
Indianapolis, IN (IND) AirTran Airways
Flight 419
(on Boeing 717)
Total Travel Time: 4 hrs 25 mins
Seeing this itinerary made me excited. I’ve never been to ATL before, and have always wanted to see it.
Alas, a problem occurred. Notice the departure time for the return DFW-ATL-IND trip? Yeah. 5:30am. Seriously….5:30am.
This meant getting up at 3:30am for a 30-40 minute drive to the airport and accounting for the required one hour before departure arrival at the airport...yada yada…
I guess I’d just have to deal with it.  Silly
So, at about 3:30pm, July 14th, we started for the 1 hour 10 minute drive to Indianapolis International Airport’s Colonel H. Weir Cook Terminal.
We arrived at the airport at approximately 5:00pm local time for our 6:48pm departure.
We proceeded to check in via the AirTran Self-Serve Kiosk, since I had checked us in at 2am that morning. My father scanned his credit card, and pulled up mine and my sister’s reservations. We printed her IND-ATL boarding pass, and it was about to print my IND-ATL boarding pass…….then an error message appeared. My heart just dropped, and I looked across the way to the long line to the Customer Service desk.
It was inevitable that we’d have to get in line.
After about 20-25 minutes, we had our boarding passes, and proceeded to the security check.
Security was empty, so we immediately got our boarding passes checked, took our shoes off, I took my laptop out of my new laptop/camera bag, and they were back in my possession in less than five minutes.
After entering the B Concourse, looking north.

We then proceeded to gate B17. This was obviously AirTran country, when I was presented with this……

The gate area was pretty empty, and stayed pretty empty until about 10 minutes before the flight. Luckily, there was a Cold Stone Creamery right next to the gate area, so I spent $2.50 on a Coke.  Silly
After walking around the terminal and doing some spotting with my new Nikon D60.

The taxi and departure were pretty uneventful.

We made a parallel approach into ATL with another aircraft. We landed on runway 9R, and held short of 9L after exiting on a fast exit. We waited for two other AirTran aircraft to depart off of 9L before taxiing across to our ramp.
We arrived about 20 minutes early, and had an hour to make our connection to DFW.

We walked around the airport for a bit, then proceeded to our gate for the flight to DFW, departing from gate C14.

My sister was adamant on getting the window seat I had reserved for myself, and I refused. Well, she pinched multiple times right before we got onto the airplane, so I let her have the window seat.  Silly
At least she was capable of taking some pictures for me, so that was okay.

Once again, I didn’t really take any pictures of the taxi and departure. By the time we were actually holding short of the runway, the sky was dark, and all of the airport lights were illuminated.
We were about #3 for takeoff when we stopped taxiing. After waiting in line for 15 minutes, it was time to take to the air.
We had a pretty uneventful flight (as usual). The snack service didn’t start until about 30 minutes after departure. I’d post a picture…but it was exactly like the last flight.
After finishing my snack, I proceeded to read “The Driver” By Alex Roy, which I had brought from home for the flight. I read a couple chapters, then tried to get a small power nap.
I never really got to sleep, because my sister had to use the lavatory. *eye roll*
Eventually, we started our descent into the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. The approach felt like we were flying into Washington D.C. with all of the banks and turns we did. Finally, we leveled out, and you could see the ground rushing up toward us.
We touched down at 9:55 local time on runway 17C. We made a short taxi to the gate, then deplaned after the jetway was attached and the L1 door was opened. I waited until everyone had deplaned so I could ask for a flightdeck picture. My request was granted, and I took a couple pictures of the flightdeck. Sadly, they came out über-blurry, so I won’t bother posting.
All in all, It was an enjoyable flight for my first time on AirTran.
Thanks for reading! Look forward to my DFW-ATL-IND trip report soon!

Looks like you had good flights. You shouldn't have given up your window seat. You should have told her to pick a window seat when you checked in.  yes  Next time you must fly DL as FL is FaiL. Have good flights back.

Nice report. Glad your first experience with AirTran was a good one. I've been flying FL for years and they haven't failed me yet  Smile

And don't listen to any of these folks:

DL is in fact fail.

Both Atlanta-hubbed airlines, in my opinion, rock. It is US that is fail.
