QF419 SYD-MEL. 767. Windy Landing. RTW 3 Weeks (6)

Fri Sep 11, 2009 1:20 pm

SYD – MEL: Sunday, August 30th, QF 419. B767-300

SDT: 09:00
ADT: 09:14
SAT: 10:30
AAT: 10:55
Seat 4A
Duration 1h41m

So after getting completely drunk on an Australian football game (go swans!), we woke up early and headed to the airport… We took a crazy taxi driver… what is it with taxi drivers in Australia? They all drive like there is no tomorrow… crazy stuff. We nearly got killed on the way to the game the night before… it was quite scary…

We arrived to the Qantas terminal… my friend decided to try the automated check in. I can’t begin to tell you what a mess that was… They system got stuck, then there was only one window seat available… we both wanted window… then the scanner didn’t scan his passport, so the whole thing got stuck again… so we headed to the regular check in counters:

There, I requested window seats for both of us, but the plane was full… After check in we walked to the lounge where two funny things happened. The first, a businessman was walking behind us as we entered the lounge when he saw there was a spot by the window… he ran (literally) pushed us and sat on the chair… we were taken aback by how bizarre his behaviour was…

Then… given the fact that we only had one window seat, we decided to flip a coin for it. My colleague threw the coin into the air and we both called it… however, when it landed on the floor it rolled all the way to a wall and it stayed perpendicular to the floor… what are the odds of that???? We were laughing pretty loud after that… We tossed the coin again and luckily I got the window seat! Here are pictures of the lounge:

After a while, we headed to the gate where boarding had started already:

Take off was nice…

After take off, we were served a lite breakfast:

The crew was nice… much nicer than the one between EZE and SYD… That really makes no sense… the long-haul makes more money, should have the better crews… my humble opinion…

It was a short flight, so no more food or drinks were served… The entertainment consisted in a really bad TV show … it was really awful!

When I started this business trip, I knew Argentina would be cold… it would still be winter there… I never expected (for whatever reason) Australia to be that cold and windy… Landing in Melbourne was fun... very windy… When I came out of the terminal I froze to death… here is the landing:

Ok, so final verdict… I still don’t love Qantas. The crew was nicer but the food and the seat were just ok…. True, it was a domestic flight, but domestic could mean a 5 hour flight in Australia… so here is the ranking of this trip so far:

1st place: LAN
2nd place: British Airways
3rd place: Qantas domestic
4th place: Qantas long-haul
5th place: Iberia

Thanks for the report. It's always interesting to see what people from overseas (especially the US) think of the service provided on Australia's airlines.

I would never fly Business class in Australia. It's ridiculously expensive, comared to TG for example, and your report shows that there's no reason for it - same headsets as Y, similar food to Y, slightly more room at the seat and lounge access - doesn't really seem that worth it for a flight like SYD-MEL (or BNE-SYD/MEL as is my case most of the time). You can fly DJ and pay $30 to access The Lounge, then again when you're not dishing out for it, who cares right?!?

I was very disappointed to read that you barracked for the Swans and not the Lions however! Perhaps next time you come to Australia you'll do the right thing and support a decent team  Big grin

Hi Ogre727 ... Was that child in the landing video screaming for the entire flight? I feel for you. Very good TR ... keep em coming.

Right! Nor would I ever waste points upgrading to domestic biz. Even to/from PER.

No, the crying baby was on the MAD-CCS segment of this RTW trip... the one on this flight was kind enough to scream during landing only...

Which begs the question... should babies be allowed in business? I have mixed feelings about it... you?

Hi Ogre727. It's a tough one isn't it? My immediate reaction is : babies (for me that's 0-3 years, a definite "NO!!!!!" ; children aged 4-12 years, preferably not, but parents should have enough sense to know how their children are likely to behave. They should also sit back and think how they would like the flight to be as if they were travelling alone, and book accordingly.

The best & most considerate arrangement I ever experienced was an SR flight a long time ago - back when there were only F & Y classes ( do you remember just 8 seats across in Y on SR DC10's???) between BOM & HKG. The family boarded, and the parents turned left into 1st, and the nanny plus 2 small children came back into Y (where we were sitting). That's the way to do it. But in these more democratic days, it would be unusual.

Cheers.
