Hard Landing On The A380! QF31 SIN-LHR.

Mon Sep 21, 2009 9:18 am

After 3 weeks of travelling, I was ready to go back home. I was grumpy, had definitely gained some kilograms (stupid airplane food) and was missing my better half.

I had made some wrong choices too… A month before the trip I decided that it would be a good idea to visit Kuala Lumpur for a day. The lack of any usable cells in my brain made this sound like a fantastic idea, Petrona’s towers and all… I did go, and did like (somewhat) KL, but I was so tired I didn’t appreciate it too much…

The best part of the whole trip was yet to come, though, as I would fly home on the ugliest greatest plane of them all… the A380!

SINLHR: Sunday, September 6th, QF 31. A380!!!!!!!! (another first, of course)

SDT: 23:29
ADT: 00:25
SAT: 06:40
AAT: 07:12
Seat 22A

Duration: 13H47M

The day before the flight I went into the Qantas website to see if I could check in; something that was not possible in any of my other Qantas’ flights on this round the world tour. Luckily I was able to this time and I entered panic mode. Which seat to chose? I even asked another fellow anetter 797, but he was (obviously) useless being a neophyte on these matters.

I finally picked 22A. Mainly because in theory I would have no one seated right next to me (I told you my brain cells were gone by this time) and because there would be no one behind me, so I could take videos out of the window without anyone bugging me.

We checked in and went through immigration very quickly. We headed for the Qantas lounge which was enormous. I can’t remember if it was a Qantas lounge or a One world lounge, or what it was… but there were herds of people drinking beer, eating pizza or noodles, making noises, crying babies… running kids… the usual I-am-grumpy-hope-the-lounge-is-empty stuff you get when flying these days.

Boarding was supposed to start at 11:15, but I decided to head to the gate before… In Singapore, you go through the x-ray machine prior to entering the boarding area. When I got there, there was no plane, no people, nothing…

After a while, they opened the gate, and I rushed through the x-rays as I wanted to get a video of the plane as it arrived. As a matter of fact, I saw it coming when I was getting dressed again (putting my belt, shoes, laptop inside the bag, etc). So I jumped over some seats, pushed people in front of me, and threw all my bags and sweater on the floor to free my arms in order to take the video. I don’t know about you guys, but to me this was a majestic moment… not everyday you get to fly the biggest plane of the world for the first time…

I don’t know if it was because I was so tired… or because I was so ready to go home, but, as the plane arrived into the gate my eyes filled with tears… I said to myself “don’t be silly, it’s just another plane”, but somehow that made it worse… I was so filled with emotion, so taken aback by the moment that I took my camera and accidentally erased the video, and all the pictures I had taken from the lounge and the check-in process… Sigh…

The moment had gone, and I was back to grumpy mode. I did take pictures of the stupid plane:

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08363.jpg

It was hot in the airport, and just when I thought that no more people fit into the boarding area, a few more hundred made their way through security. At the end, there were about 3 thousand people waiting to board. Don’t believe me? Look for yourself:

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08364.jpg

Boarding was delayed some minutes, and then some more. Finally boarding started, and I rushed through the jetway:

There it was!!! I was so close now:

I have already whined about Qantas’ business class service. This flight was no different. You felt like you were flying regular economy on an airline from the United States. Here are my first pictures inside the whale:

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08371.jpg

I know some of you guys like these things, so I took pictures of the menu:
http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08372.jpg

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08373.jpg

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08375.jpg

Just like on the upper deck of the 747 the curvature allows for more storage room:
http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08380.jpg

The seatbelt is just like a car’s:
http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08381.jpg

I really do apologize about the quality of some of the pictures and certainly of this take off video. It was a night flight, which made things very challenging:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80iB1Fs38-s

Take off was very quiet. I have to say, this is by far the quietest plane I have ever flown in. It was also the slowest one to climb up… It was a little weird to gain altitude so slowly…

I was exhausted from my emotional outburst, so I decided to skip dinner so I set my seat into the sleeping position and I felt asleep… deeply.

I awoke right over Afghanistan. There were 7 hours of flight left. I decided to walk around the gentle whale:

It was still dark:
http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08388.jpg

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08389.jpg

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08390.jpg

So I decided to venture into first class. This is something I only do for you guys:

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08392.jpg

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08393.jpg

I came out of business class and this snotty flight attendant asked me: “are you okey”; “fine, I said”, to which he replied: “then don’t come into first class again… it’s only for first class passengers”… I was annoyed, but decided to walk away. I know he was right, I know I was only flying in business, but it was the way he said it.

Other pictures:

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08402.jpg

The entertainment system was really cool. It had all the Oscar winning movies from 1960 on… nice.

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08398.jpg

Finally! Someone decided to make the sinks automated, all you have to do is put your hands below et voila! No more pushing the thingy to get water for 2 seconds only!!!
http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08405.jpg

Did you guys hear about the bar in front of Qantas’ business class? I looked for it… over and over but couldn’t find it… I only found this “lounge”:

I believe this is premium economy:
http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08412.jpg

Breakfast was exactly what I ordered. Nothing special, but then again, I didn’t tick off all the boxes on the menu:
http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq220/ogre727/rtw%205/DSC08404.jpg

We started our descent into London a little behind schedule. Then the captain announced that there was some traffic, so we would have to circle over London for a while… This was the A380!!! Shouldn’t they let us fly through without delays?

We finally got the green light and we rushed to the runway. I was very eager to see how the landing would be… I always think that the 747 lands gracefully and gently… I make myself believe that this is because of the enormous wingspan and some obscure cushion effect… Ergo, the A380 would be even more graceful and gentle… NOT:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8cXmMVw47o

Now, let’s be fair… If you search through you tube there are at least two landings that are much harder than mine in the A380. But in all seriousness, I had my head tilted slightly sideways to take the landing and my neck got hurt… it hurt for about an hour after the landing, so it wasn’t too serious… still…

Conclusion… first of all thanks to all of you who have read my reports. I know I can be sometimes boring, and I know my pictures are not the best, so thank you for bearing with me. Even bigger thanks to all of you who were kind enough to post a comment. I really appreciate them. It is mostly for you that I write these reports.

I did take pictures of the LHR-ZHR and SIN-KUL-SIN segments, but I really am a little tired of writing… and those legs are not too fun.

Ok, so final ranking:

1st place: Cathay Pacific – Long Haul
2nd place: LAN
3rd place: Cathay Pacific – Regional
4th place: British Airways
5th place: Qantas – Domestic
6th place: Qantas – Long Haul
7th place: Iberia

This remains unchanged from my previous legs. I still think that Qantas was not too good, but still above Iberia. The plane was spotless and the seat was slightly better than the average business seat, but the crew was the regular Qantas-long-haul crew.

QF terrible service once again, it seems that their economy service is better than their business class service on long haul routes.

Thanks for the report Big grin

Hi, great report, in fact I've read all your reports and they all made good reading! I'm very envious of your RTW trip.

Typical bitchy Qantas service, what can I say! That's the main reason I avoid them like the plague.

Regardless of which class you're spending a long-haul flight on, inflight service, i.e. meal/refreshment times, are some kinda "checkpoints" - what to do? enjoying - or trying to - enjoy what's been offered. Eating pre, and post flight ...and in flight gets us thru time - and destination - and unfortunately attach some weights here and there.

It's always like getting a slap when travelling - getting told where you belong to - however, there's definitely a more polite way to say that ...

The J class catering for supper with just one main course and dessert is quite sub-standard, especially for a 14 hour flight. A "Big Bowl of Soup" is also not what I would consider a main course. Neither is a toasted foccocia sandwich.

Surprised to see that the service was not up to scratch, because I've taken a few QF flights in the past 3 years (domestic Australia and Singapore-Australia) and have found the service to be reasonably good. On the Perth-SYD/BNE/MEL flights the cabin crew are usually really good as well.

Hi,

With all due respect, there is a red barrier in place at the top of the stairs to stop passengers going to First Class however if the crew member spoke to you like this that wasn't the right manner to address it. To be honest though, walking in to First Class in the middle of the night and taking pictures in the cabin isn't really the done thing. If you had asked, the crew would happily have taken you for a tour of the aircraft after landing and as such you could have checked out the cabins in much more detail.

Qantas don't advertise a bar, they advertise 3 self service Skybars, one of which is opposite the lounge.

There are 4 options on the menu;

The soup, focaccia, pan fried seabass and chili pork. Desert consists of the tart, cheese and fresh fruit. Remember this is supper service being served around 1-2am Singapore.

There are indeed for options under the menu for "main course" which is the soup, focaccia, seabass and chilli pork. However what I said was I don't think soup and focaccia should be considered main courses.

I doubt that all four dishes are meant to be taken in succession, and that pax are meant to choose only one of the four main course choices?

Unfortunately the latest menu I could get on www.sqtalk.com for the SINLHR overnight flight on SQ is from Jan 09, but here it is:

SQ322 Singapore-London Jan 09

=== Supper ===
[Special Lunar New Year menu]

Appetiser

Fa Cai Yu Sheng
Prosperity New Year salad with salmon to usher in the Year of the Ox

Main Courses (3 Choices)

Good Health And Joyful Spring
Braised abalone and chicken with deluxe vegetables and steamed rice

Pan fried cod fillet with creamy masala spice sauce, steamed potato and asparagus
Exclusively created by Georges Blanc, Vonnas

Saffron fettuccine pasta with braised beef cheek, arugula lettuce and shaved parmesan cheese

Dessert

Coconut milk pudding with green "chendol" and sweetcorn

Cheese

Gourmet cheese with garnishes

Coffee and Tea

Gourmet coffees & selection of fine teas

=== Light bites ===

Fish ball noodle soup
Vermicelli or flat rice noodles in broth served with fish balls and fish cakes

Prawn noodle soup
Noodles in broth served with prawn and fish cake

Vegetarian and non-vegetarian instant noodles

Beef pastrami with garlic focaccia sandwich
Tuna mayonnaise with onion ciabatta
Roasted portobello mushroom with plain ciabatta

Assorted nuts
Chocolate bar
Assorted biscuits
Potato chips
Kjeldsens cookies
A selection from the fruit basket

=== Breakfast ===

Apple, tomato or freshly squeezed orange juice
Sliced fresh fruit

A choice of cereals or yoghurt
Cornflakes with milk or granola with yoghurt-berry compote
Plain or fruit yoghurt

Braised egg noodles with roast duck, mushrooms and leafy greens

Ham and mushroom ragout in crepe served with roasted tomato and hash brown potato

Egg-vegetable frittata with chicken sausage, roasted tomato and gratin potato

Assorted breakfast rolls (Note: This typically includes pain au chocolat, muffins and croissants, among other rolls)
Butter - Fruit preserve

Gourmet coffees & selection of fine teas

====================

If the competition is offering a proper appetiser and 3 proper main course choices for a flight operating the same route at the same time, perhaps QF should consider doing the same.

That said, most J class pax probably don't eat a heavy supper and go straight to bed. However, the choice should still be there for those who want to eat a full meal with all the courses.

The breakfast choice on QF also seems limited. Listing "scrambled eggs, grilled bacon and tomato relish" as the three choices for the main course for breakfast also seems rather strange, seeing as together they form one breakfast main course? It would be something like SQ taking their crepe, tomato and hashbrown dish in the above breakfast menu and listing them as three separate main course items for pax to choose from.

Using that logic would mean SQ had 8 choices for breakfast:

Braised egg noodles
Roast duck
Mushrooms
Leafy greens
Ham and mushroom ragout in crepe
Roasted tomato
Hash brown potato
Egg-vegetable frittata
Chicken sausage
Gratin potato

Perhaps SQ should do that to make it seem that they've heaps of choices. A novel way indeed!

Fear not.... I commend you for your boldness! Thanks for doing it and writing a trip report. It takes A LOT of effort to write a trip report and the only reason I wrote two reports last month was because I had a horrendous flight with LH, and I took SQ First longhaul. I will not be writing trip reports for a long, long time because it is just such a huge effort!

Nice tripreport! It's too bad Qantas doesn't really live up to its expectations as I heard/read so many positive stories about them. And I agree: there are far better ways to tell you it wasn't really allowed to walk into First Class; good of you how you just walked away.

I really like the interior of this whale jet by the way; great colors (yeah and I even think the infamous puke green Y-class seats aren't that bad) and a minimalistic design. Much more to my liking than EK. That illuminated logo on top of the stairs looks great IMO.

Hey there,

With regard to the infringement into First, probably not the right way for the FA to handle but, I can't see how anyone could get remotely annoyed about, it was the middle of the night, and you taking pics? Your doing something pretty blatantly wrong especially if you undid the barrier. Whilst I admire your tenacity, look at it from the FAs perspective, someone has wondered into your zone and started taking pics in the middle of the night after climbing over a barrier. I would not be impressed either people in First pay in part extra for their additional privacy, the barrier was there for a reason. I find nothing wrong with what he said, however I suppose it is important to note though that neither his nor your tone can come across in writing...

Good report though, I've always enjoyed QF service its a shame you didn’t too, I must say though they need to get rid of those bloody awful non-slip grey trays and offer some proper linen lined trays, there are a few other small things like that, that when combined could make a remarkable difference to the service delivery.

Nice Pictures too that holding area looks far to small I must say!

Perhaps the meal service is lighter as many pax may traveling right through from Australia and thus already ate before landing in SIN?

Last time I flew from MEL to the states and back there was a much larger selection (I ordered far to much and could finish very little of it, lol very embarrassing ) it's a shame their offering seems to have been reduced. I love the breakfast 'room-service' system though!

Anyway hope everyone enjoys their day!

Guys! guys! come on!!!! I didn´t undo any stupid barrier... There was NONE. Also, there was no flight attendant when you came down the stairs into first class, so REALLY no one told me I was doing something wrong until it was too late (ok, so once I found myself in first I did take the pictures, crucify me for that if you will, but I made sure not to show any people). This is what actually happened, so please take it easy on me!!!!

I'm pretty sure I got whiplash just from WATCHING that landing video. From an untrained perspective, let me say that again, from an untrained and uneducated perspective, it seemed like there was no reason to land that hard. The conditions were excellent. It really annoys me that pilots don't go to the greatest lengths to make landings smooth. I love flying, but rough takeoffs and landings are sources of anxiety for almost everyone on the plane. Why not minimize this by landing like a feather?

Thanks for the venture in to the first class cabin. Even if you had taken your pants off and pooped in the middle of the first class cabin, the FA should not have spoken so condescendingly.

Welcome home, Ogre727. We've all enjoyed the trip with you - a brave effort!

As for your encounter with Alan Joyce's Loyal Protector & Gatekeeper of the A380 First Realm , both as an Aussie and also as a traveller too familiar with QF for both my and their own good (... read: "Familiarity breeds contempt" ), I can hear in my head exactly how that FA delivered his rebuke. Totally unacceptable. In a service (and yes, safety as well, before anyone howls at me...) position such as his, there is always a right way and a wrong way to handle any situation. He chose the wrong way. Simple, and no excuses.

I've only ever experienced something that bad - with very similar wording used - on Finnair. What made that incident worse, was that it occured on an occasion when I was simply walking back into the totally empty aft Biz section on an MD11, when I was seated in the front section. I too went back to take some photos without disturbing anyone. Anyway, that had been my 1st & most definately LAST AY flight!

Cheers, Airbear

I have to agree that there's always a nicer and tactful way to tell your customers off. The last time I encountered something similar was on SQ. A Y class passenger managed to roam into J in the middle of the night, sat himself down, got into a comfortable reclined position and consequently dozed off.

During one of his walk abouts, the inflight supervisor noticed this 'extra' passenger in J, and politely tapped him on his shoulders to wake him up and asked if he was was in the wrong seat and requested to see his boarding pass. The passenger then insisted that since J wasn't full, he should be allowed to remain there. To this, the supervisor told him (in hushed but firm tone) : "I'm sorry sir, business class is strictly for business class passengers. I'm afraid that you will have return to your designated seat". The Y passenger wasn't too pleased, but reluctantly returned to the Y cabin.

LOL..... You poor, weary, jet lagged traveller you! That should teach you a lesson that KL can never be conquered in a day despite being only 400kms from Singapore!

Well I do not even know where to begin to say how serious airlines take to boundary infringements by people who do not belong there. Here is my experience...

MAS 777-200
BKK-KUL

I was the only passenger in the aft JCL cabin and halfway through the flight, a passenger who looked like he was of Indian origins slipped through the curtains on the opposite aisle, sat down, took out the pillow case from the pillow on the seat, put the case over his head, pulled it down to cover his eyes, reclined the seat and slept.

A stewardess witnessed this later on, went to wake him up and firmly pointed behind the cutain twice. This man got up, reached out to squeeze one of the breast of the stewardess and smirked before he disappeared aft.

Of course my jaws dropped.

But the stewardess crossed the 3 middle seats and came to me...

"Mr Soh, sorry you had to witness that. Are you ok?"
"Am I OK?! Never mind me but are you ok?! He just molested you!"
"Never mind lah, I take that attention as a compliment..."

With a little laugh she sashayed forward into the galley leaving me dumbfounded. Later I approached her again volunteering to be a witness should she decide to press charges but she didn't want to because this wasn't the first time she got it from passengers and she found the attention rather flattering. To that brave stewardess, it depends whether you want to view the glass as half full or half empty, I guess.
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Ryan That's Gold! i nearly pissed myself laughing... had a mental picture in my head of this cheeky indian guy with a big grin on his face having a squeeze! Sounds more like something that would happen at a drunken australian BBQ then on SQ!

I have to agree though, some of the QF cabin crew really shouldn't be there anymore. It's partly a cutlural thing where Australians simply dont like serving ppl, and partly just people who should have moved on to something they are better suited to (remember though a lot of them really liked the perks that Came with QF.,... going elsewhere for some of them would be a pretty scarey concept) Either way no excuse for being rude. Had it been me, I think I would have made some joke about being naughty and sneeking into F class...and then casually say...with a big smile "come on... we're going back up stairs... actually i've got some things you may be intersted in " and get the poor sod a drink from the galley or a chocolate or something to smooth it over. Then maybe something like 'sorry about that but we get in huge trouble if we leave someone from the other cabins in F... they're very strict about keeing it exclusive"

What! Aussies have the friendliest service staff on earth. Go to any cafe or restaurant in Australia and chances are you'd get really good service!

I think Singapore has the rudest, most incompetent service staff on earth. Singaporeans completely look down on serving others and over 60% of our retail industry is now staffed by foreigners because Singaporeans would rather starve than serve.

However, Singaporeans who become SIA cabin crew somehow give some the best, most attentive and personal service of any airline. Whether it's the training, the attractive pay or what, I don't know. But for SIA to take a bunch of Singaporeans and mould them into giving really good service and feel good about themselves... Now that's a miracle!

Considering Aussies are generally quite good at serving on the ground, I find that generally QF cabin crew are fairly friendly.

Agreed. There is a line there and if you choose to cross it then expect to face the consequences. If a Y pax walked into the J cabin and starting taking photos with people trying to sleep, I'm sure he/she would have been shut down immediately and told to leave. That said, the FA could have dealt with it alot better.

Quoting Ogre727 (Thread starter):
We finally got the green light and we rushed to the runway. I was very eager to see how the landing would be… I always think that the 747 lands gracefully and gently… I make myself believe that this is because of the enormous wingspan and some obscure cushion effect… Ergo, the A380 would be even more graceful and gentle… NOT:

That landing seemed very rough. Must have been a major downwind as you crossed the threshold.

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 18):

LOL!!!!! Omg, that would have been truly something to witness. Kudos to the FA for being so good about it!

Yes some of the older QF FAs should probably consider retirement soon, but it's quite a generalisation to say that it's 'partly a cultural thing'. This is invalid, come over to Aus some time and then try saying that again. MOST people I've met in Aus are exceptionally friendly and those who have served me have been decent as well.

Bit more description would have been nice, but overall a good TR!

They give the best because they have an absolutely fantastic product, extremely good training and managers and people who listen to what they have to say!!
When our cabins at QF were being revamped, our customer service satisfaction ratings went through the roof (2003-2006), this was because we had PRIDE in what we were offering (Except the IFE). I guess the manager have not caught onto this quite yet  Smile.

Last time I flew from MEL to the states and back there was a much larger selection (I ordered far to much and could finish very little of it, lol very embarrassing ) it's a shame their offering seems to have been reduced. I love the breakfast 'room-service' system though!

There still is an extremely large choice for Breakfast, it was just not all mentioned here.

Quoting Docpepz (Reply 6):
If the competition is offering a proper appetiser and 3 proper main course choices for a flight operating the same route at the same time, perhaps QF should consider doing the same.

Hey Docpepz,
All our service offering in First and Business is done by a research company amoungst our top % of frequent flyers. this is how the service came about. No appetiser, just a quick supper service or you have the choice to Dine Later at your request. Their is also a dine later form which you can fill out and we will set aside wat you would like for a later time during the flight.
However, i do agree that a soup maybe served as appetiser and then main...

Thanks for the report, shame you didnt get good service on us, but we are around!!

Cheers

Oooops, sorry for the faux pas. Indeed it does go to the Kiwis. Anyway I've taken a few intra Australia flights with QF in the past couple of years and have always found the service to be good. Perhaps I had a disproportionately large number of Kiwi crew on my flights =)

Yes I do agree that most premium pax don't give two hoots about the food. They just want to get on board and sleep. Someone I know took an SQ overnight flight from BNE to SIN last year in J, which had a pretty full cabin, and not ONE pax ate anything for the entire flight.

I also guess QF decided not to cater for a full meal service because historical records showed that most pax didn't eat that much and all the food was just thrown away at the end of the flight.

I suppose it's only in First Class where they'd over cater to ensure that everyone on board gets their meal choice.

The main reason why service at our retail and F&B outlets suck big time is due to the fact that these small, medium enterprises don't give two hoots about training their front line staff adequately for their job. So what we end up having are students or housewives who are just there to earn pocket money, couldn't care less whether the establishment closes down today or tomorrow, and are clueless about the product they are trying to sell.

In contrast, visit the 5 star hotels and restaurants in Singapore, and you'll see that service there is generally top-notch. Employees there have been adequately trained and instilled with a sense of pride in their product. It's the same situation over at SQ. SQ's emphasis on training for each and every employee is amazingly structured and well-planned. I've not come across any other Singaporean company that pays so much attention on training.

Queers And Nuts Try Another Service...

Thank you for really great reports, I appreciate them.

Yep, I've given up on QF also, after my last LAX/SYD we in F/C were expected to turn the lights out an not make a sound until breakfast was served. I was not a happy camper, it was take off lights out Good Night Y'all.

I've flown on EK's 380's now six times in B/C although service seems a bit erratic, I LOVE the Plane, my new fav..

Thanks once again,

Cheers

Quoting Toptravel (Reply 28):

Thats actualy the service procedure on ALL supper flights. When the lights are dimmed for takeoff they are not to be turned back up, only down. First class is all about choice. You choose everything, it is tailored to the individual. So if you would like to eat after takeoff then you can, or at your leisure throughout the flight. It is clearly stated on the menu and the crew are to tell you this when they handout the menus to each pax after their introduction. (It usually occurs when they ask if you would like the turndown service, name intoduction etc...).

Because Airlines all have very different service structures i guess it can be seen as crew being "lazy" etc...

I even asked another fellow anetter 797, but he was (obviously) useless being a neophyte on these matters.

Nice way to begin, let me tell you! Firstly, I wasn't home when you asked so it was impossible for me to look at the sites I know for this kind of stuff. Secondly, you were giving me options that looked pretty much the same, so what the heck!? Just kidding.

Awesome report, truly. I enjoyed to read how damn excited you were. I would have probably gotten detained at the terminal for pushing people and seeing the big fat whale arrive. It's something I still need to do, and hope to do it soon. However, after reading your report, I know my oneworld miles won't be spent in the QF Business Class service. Not impressive whatsoever.

Quoting Ogre727 (Reply 12):

Guys! guys!

Didn't your mom never teach you to stay in one place and behave?! Big grin
Thanks for the photos. I would have argued my a$$ off with that idiot FA. There's NEVER a reason to treat passengers like this (especially if you're traveling in Business - even though it may sound a bit classist).

Once again, thanks for the report bro!

And btw, thank me for advising you to change the namings on your reports. Thanks to that you have 30+ replies on this one!

Hi there

I really enjoyed reading your trip report. I have flown in the QF A380 from LHR to SIN only, on the return I was working (for BA on a good old B744). I flew in the J class on QF and must admit I really enjoyed it. I did notice a few odd noises in mid flight, to be honest it sounded like pluming! And came from the middle of the aircraft – not sure if you heard the same thing at any time?

Quoting Ogre727 (Thread starter):
We finally got the green light and we rushed to the runway. I was very eager to see how the landing would be… I always think that the 747 lands gracefully and gently… I make myself believe that this is because of the enormous wingspan and some obscure cushion effect… Ergo, the A380 would be even more graceful and gentle… NOT:

Landing at LHR can sometimes be rough which aircraft you’re in. I have landed many times in a B744 and its been rough, normally caused by a last minute gust of side wind (Mother Nature is always ready to keep our pilots on their toes).

Speaking about landing on the A380, when I flew QF from LHR to SIN we landed in what the pilots warned us would be a bumpy approach (the type I LOVE). While I could see lightning out the window it seemed to be a few miles away but it was the amount of water passing the window that amazed me, it was like a flood passing over the fuselage/windows. It was not until we got to about 400ft did the pilots start dipping the nose and you could hear the engines revving up and down.

Once over the one way I had put my flight attendant smile on (it still activates even when not working!) and braced myself a little. To my surprise the bird made such a smooth touchdown I hardly felt it – the F/O made an announcement saying that a number of “foreign airlines in smaller aircraft were holding off their approaches” – which suggested the pilots felt the A380 was more able to deal with the weather conditions.

Back to your post, really enjoyed it. Hope to see more.

Thank you for this great TR. I guess when tired all people think alike, but you expressed it in a very funny way, i was reading it with a smile all along.

Still, A380 is an adventure to fly. QF seems to offer very bad service, for C class for sure.

Thx again.

It might be interesting to note that the matter of fact way you were treated when you did something wrong is an example of why QF has such a good safety record for an airline flying for nearly 90 years. The Australian culture of calling a spade a spade and not being afraid to speak up, regardless of whom the comment is directed at, was studied in the formative days of Crew Resource Management.

Yes, Aussies are friendly, but they are also blunt.

Nice report & pix, thanks for posting.

Quoting Ogre727 (Thread starter):
I would fly home on the ugliest greatest plane of them all… the A380!

- She is not pretty, but not ugly, I think she is pretty cool.

Quoting Ogre727 (Thread starter):
I really do apologize about the quality of some of the pictures and certainly of this take off video. It was a night flight, which made things very challenging:

- Don't worry, have the same issues.

Quoting Ogre727 (Thread starter):
this is by far the quietest plane I have ever flown in

- She really is quiet.

Quoting Ogre727 (Thread starter):
I came out of business class and this snotty flight attendant asked me: “are you okey”; “fine, I said”, to which he replied: “then don’t come into first class again… it’s only for first class passengers”… I was annoyed, but decided to walk away. I know he was right, I know I was only flying in business, but it was the way he said it.

- Whlst the FA has a point, the way it was discussed was all wrong.

Quoting Ogre727 (Thread starter):
Did you guys hear about the bar in front of Qantas’ business class? I looked for it… over and over but couldn’t find it… I only found this “lounge”:

- From memory, there is not a bar, but a small sofa area to relax, it's pretty crapcompared to the EK offering.

Quoting Ogre727 (Thread starter):
This was the A380!!! Shouldn’t they let us fly through without delays?

- You would have thought so!

Quoting Ogre727 (Thread starter):
If you search through you tube there are at least two landings that are much harder than mine in the A380. But in all seriousness, I had my head tilted slightly sideways to take the landing and my neck got hurt… it hurt for about an hour after the landing, so it wasn’t too serious… still…

- I've had 3 A380 landings, all 3 have been really smooth.

Regards
