London Gatwick-Edinburgh (Rtn): Easyjet.

Sat Oct 31, 2009 1:28 am

Hello(!),

Thought I'd try to write another trip report as I haven't done one in a while (hope it turns out ok). The flight was basically an afternoon/evening short trip to Edinburgh with Easyjet from my local airport London Gatwick (about 1/2 hour drive from me). I'm still a bit of a nervous flier but the trip was quite cool and it was the first time I had ever been to Edinburgh so that was pretty cool too. Anyway on with the pics.

Was not too bad weather when I left home:

A pic from Hotel Sofitel linked to the North Terminal. Easyjet fly to Edinburgh from the South terminal but it's a long story but basically I got stopped by the police for driving without insurance (without knowing it because we're switching to a new car and my mum had already transferred the insurance) and they took my car. Luckily I was near the North terminal though so I didn't miss my trip(!) The Hotel Sofitel is a pretty nice hotel linked to the Northe Terminal (used to be Le Meridien):

The Inter-terminal shuttle bus. Gatwick normally has an automated shuttle train between terminals but this is getting an overhaul until 2010 so there's a bus between terminals now (the bus only takes a couple of minutes and they're pretty much all the time):

Gatwick's South terminal upn entering:

Starbucks coffee (and Burger King) upstairs in Gatwick Village:

South Terminal Airside (upon arrival through security):

Couple more shots of the South Terminal airside shops/restaurants:

Cafe Rouge which is a new addition to the South Terminal airside upstairs:

Good view over the South Terminal ramp and runway 26L from Cafe Rouge (I had to get a drink at the bar so didn't get to really enjoy it as I wasn't eating anything. Maybe next time(!)):

Easyjet flight 707 at 14.30, go to gate no.14:

I took this picture mainly because the flight number was cool.. I always like it when clocks read 7.37 or 7.47 so this flight number 707 was cool (although the aircraft was an Airbus A319 this time!):

Easyjet Airbus A319 parked at the gate:

Descending the airbridge to the plane (no Ryanair stairs here!):

Wing view parked at the gate:

Legroom/magazine. Not bad but from my memory I think actually Ryanair was a little better (but maybe it's because they don't actually have a place to put the magazine!):

Ryanair and Easyjet plane:

Pushing back/engine start:

Ryanair plane (Boeing 737-800 with winglets) parked at the gate:

FlyBe Bombardier Dash 8 Q-400 (I think):

Taxiing to runway 8R with nice weather:

Company Easyjet Airbus on the parallel taxiway to 8R:

Lined up on 8R with a company Easyjet Airbus and a Norwegian Boeing 737 with winglets on the taxiway:

Rolling Runway 8R:

Takeoff Runway 8R:

Sofitel and the North Terminal and the South Terminal pier:

Departing Gatwick:

Turning left:

Climbing above the clouds:

Easyjet cabin (I really kinda liked the cabin of the A319 and with the classical music they played onentering the airplane (Debussy) was quite relaxing):

In cruise to Edinburgh:

Later on in the cruise:

Approach to Edinburgh (left hand turn):

Final approach to Edinburgh airport (not sure which runway):

Landing:

British Airways Airbus/Boeing (probably going to Heathrow Terminal 5):

Our Airbus A319:

British Airways Citiflyer(?) Avro RJ (probably going to London City airport?):

Costa Coffee/WHSmiths in the baggage claim area of Edinburgh airport:

Departure level of Edinburgh airport:

The bus to Edinburgh city from the airport:

Although not directly aviation related here are some pictures of Edinburgh city itself which I took during my short stay for the afternoon/evening. Unfortunately it was already dark by the time I got there but hopefully the pics turn out ok.

Edinburgh castle (quite dim in the distance):

Princes Street (shopping and the works for the new tram):

Another shopping street:

Starbucks coffee on George Street:

Shopping street near St.Christopher's shopping centre with many designer names:

St. Christopher's shopping centre. Basically a very nice shopping centre with a big John Lewis department store and many other high street shops:

The chain store "Game" had a few flightsim products, one of which is here "Around the World in 80 flights". Although they didn't have Fs2004 or FsX they had a few addons for it (and of course digger simulator!):

Back at the airport Ezy714 to London Gatwick at 20.55. There are mainly flights to mainland UK but there are also flights to Oslo, Amsterdam and Dalaman:

"Paul" is a chain of French bakery which they have in France and London where I normally spend way too much money. Was cool to see they have a location in Edinburgh airport departures (airside). Edinburgh airport is managed by BAA (British Airport Authority?) who also own London Stansted, Heathrow and Gatwick (although I think they recently had to sell Gatwick). Hence the signposts are quite similar to Gatwick:

Edinburgh airport departures (airside):

Ezy714 boarding gate 12:

The flight was delayed by around 45mins-1hr dur to late inbound aircraft so was now boarding from gate 3 (I think):

Boarding the night return flight (another Airbus A319) to London Gatwick via the airstairs:

Night wing view (apologies for the blurry shot):

Boarding/flight attendant in the cabin (the cabin on both the flight to Edinburgh and the return flight was quite clean and tidy):

Rolling:

Night departure (apologies for the blurry shot):

That's pretty much all I managed to take before my camera ran out of memory. Was quite a cool flight though both to Edinburgh and the return and I wouldn't mind flying Easyjet again (their fares were not too high, their cabins clean and quite relaxed and overall quite a pleasant flying experience.

Hope people liked the report/pics and found the trip to Edinburgh with Easyjet quite cool to read. Any comments/criticism etc. welcome.

Many thanks,

Pierre.

Hello(!),

Just wanted to say a quick merci for the replies/encouragement etc. Was definitely quite cool flying Easyjet as opposed to the usual Ryanair (which I also like) which I normally fly and the Airbus A319 was quite a nice aircraft (smaller than the usual Boeing 737-800 I normally fly on!). I should have bought a couple of aircraft models from the flight though which I kinda regret (although I have another flight with Easyjet to Toulouse in a month or two so I'll probably by one then).

Many thanks,

Pierre.

Great trip report, you're all so lucky in the UK to be able to fly the way you do.

I returned home to Brisbane from Europe/UK yesterday morning and am itching to get back, especially to Edinburgh! I absolutely fell in love with that city!

I flew EDI-BFS on easyJet (from Gate 12!) My first time on U2, and an A319 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I snagged an exit row window which was good, although the flight time was only 26 minutes! Later on I flew BVA-CIA on FR and again snagged an exit/window, and had the row to myself. Surprisingly I loved Ryanair too! Must have been the Italian crew...?

Thanks again, keep up the day trips!

Hello(!),

Just to say merci for the reply/encouragement. Yes I also agree were pretty lucky in Europe for aviation enthusiasts to have airlines as cheap as Easyjet and especially Ryanair. Although the U.S. is not too bad either with Southwest Airlines having 49 dollar one way fares (I guess they were the original low fares airline).

Although I was only there for the evening I kinda liked Edinburgh too. Reminded me a little of parts of London but there were more stone buildings. Have also been to Glasgow (with Ryanair of course) and I must say from the little I saw Edinburgh is more picturesque.

Have another day trip with Easyjet in a month or two (to Toulouse) which should be quite cool (going to see the Headquaters of Airbus at least from the outside) so will try to write a report of that too if it's a cool flight.

Many thanks,

Pierre.

Great report, dont apoligise for the blurry/wet night pictures I always think they are great quite simply because Ive been on planes so many times and looked out at exactly what the picture shows! Would be boring if all pics were of dry sunny places haha!

Hope you got your car sorted.

Hello(!),

Just to say merci for the reply/encouragement. Glad you don't mind the blurry night pics (am tryig to get better at taking night shots which I find really hard especially when something's moving).

Got the car back from the impound today(!) At least I didn't miss my trip too(!)

Many thanks,

Pierre.

Hi there Pierre,

I loved your TR! I love the photos and pictures of the airport interior and planes.

Why did you choose flying to Edinburugh, as opposed to getting on a train? Is going by train faster?

Looking forward to your next TR!

Hello(!),

Just to say merci for the reply/encouragement etc. Cool you liked the pics of the terminals etc. (I like airports so I like taking photos of them!) and Edinburgh has quite a few nice shops etc.

I flew to Edinburgh mainly because I had always seen the flights on the departure board at Gatwick and I thought it would be cool to try one of those flights one day. It's quite long to go by train or car and the price is probably a bit more expensive than flying too (especially if you can get cheaper tickets in advance). Plus Easyjet is quite a cool airline (although I like most airlines!).

Many thanks,

Pierre.

Another great report!

I got married in Edinburgh - a truly great city.

Nice TR!

I flew EDI-LGW on easyJet a few years back and I had no complaints either. The service was easy, quick, and efficient. It didn't have any frills but for the price I paid it was a bargain!

By comparison, taking the train was longer and more expensive! I have no issues with rail travel - like many on here, I'm a railnut almost as much as an aircraft nut - but I didn't feel that I got my money's worth taking the train from Kings Cross. Plus the ECML is not the most scenic of routes (my opinion) - the WCML is much more interesting but not really a feasible option for London - Edinburgh. EasyJet does a fine job and there were no surprises, which is always a positive thing when flying a LCC!

Thanks again for posting. The pics and commentaries were very good, except maybe for the blurry ones (but they needed to be included for completeness!).
None shall pass!!!!

Hello(!),

Just to say merci for the many thanks for the reply/encouragement etc. I would definitely not mind flying LGW-EDI again with Easyjet. Their planes are cool (although I like both Airbus and Boeing!) and clean and service wasn't too bad at all either. Edinburgh was also quite a cool city to spend a few hours in (and they have Starbucks of course!).

Many thanks,

Pierre.

great report. I loved Edinburgh when I visited a few weeks ago. Fantastic city. I had the misfortune of flying Ryanair from Dublin into Edinburgh. But flew BA from Edinburgh to Heathrow. BA was great.

Quoting Richierich (Reply 12):
but I didn't feel that I got my money's worth taking the train from Kings Cross.

when we were planning our trip it was going to be £120 one way on the train and £90 to fly the same route. the decision was simple.  cheerful

Hello(!),

Just to say many thanks for the reply/encouragement etc. I definitely quite liked Edinburgh as a city to visit for the evening too (even though I was only there for a few hours I still got to see the stone buildings, George Street which I really liked and the shopping centre.

I still fly Ryanair quite a lot (they are so cheap if you're flexible on dates and book in advance) and I don't mind them (you still get to fly on a Boeing 737-800 with winglets) although I can appreciate how British Airways shorthaul is much better too(!)

Many thanks,

Pierre.

Hello(!),

Well it was definitely raining when I was there but coming from the UK I'm used to it (although it would have been nicer if I wasn't getting wet).

Hope the report otherwise was ok(!)

Many thanks,

Pierre.
