SHA-PEK-SZX-SHA

Fri Nov 13, 2009 1:59 pm

SHA-PEK
Flight: FM9117
ETA: 09.30
ETD: 11:50
Aircraft: B767
Class: F

Had a lunch meeting in Beijing, so caught the morning flight out of Hongqiao airport. Traffic to the airport wasn't too bad that morning, made it in around 20 minutes from Pudong. Check-in was smooth, using the first class counter. A short trip through the first class and VIP security check and then off to the lounge for a banana and some coffee.
Once on board i settled into my middle seat (2-1-2 config.), was nice not to have anyone on either side. The cabin was old and worn, with a projection screen playing a local show. Skipped breakfast on the flight since they didn't have congee (this is one of the reasons i like MU for morning flights) and just had the fruit plate. Arrived in Beijing 1.45 later after which i caught a cab into town.

Overall impression: another standard SHA-PEK hop on FM. Middle seat was nice for a change, and even though the seats were old, they were very comfortable. Will still prefer MU's A330 flight between SHA-PEK in the future simply because of the newer aircraft and nicer seats (pods).

PEK-SZX
Flight: CA1357
ETD: 15.30
ETA: 18:30
Aircraft: B747
Class: F

I typically avoid CA, simply because my experiences have been negative flying them domestic, but this time i had little choice due to schedule. The flight itself was fine, another old B747 combi for a quick 2.45 flight down south. F class is in the nose of the plane, which is nice as it gives you a great view out the windows due to the curvature of the plane. Especially when flying up or down through clouds, the experience is something else. We had quite some turbulence and could hear the rain hitting the nose of the plane when we descended. Again, i skipped the food (other than fruit) and again the seats were comfortable, even if they looked out of the late 80's.

Overall impression: Surprisingly comfortable and very good service. May have to start taking CA a little more often.

SZX-SHA
Flight: MU5328
ETD: 16:30
ETA: 18:30
Aircraft: A300-600
Class: F

Another old aircraft, but i didn't mind as it was the last leg of the trip and it was 3/3 flights on time (very uncommon in China). F class is pretty standard with 2-2-2 seating, again very old and worn seats. 1.45 to get back home to Shanghai only to be parked at a remote stand. Our VIP bus was made to wait for a departing CA 777 which was having issues and after push back remained parked for 20 minutes blocking all buses and cars from passing. Cannot wait until Hongqiao is upgraded!

Overall impression: MU still has my favor and even though the AB6 is an old plane, the seats are still very comfy. But i had a very hard time standing upright in the bathroom (being 193 cm tall).

Hi PVGAMS,

interesting report, always nice to read about Chinese carriers. I liked flying around in China very much last year.

What are the plans? New terminal?

Hi PVGAMS,

Nice little read, I always enjoy Chinese TR's following my visit there a few years back, really need to return!

Indeed, all those seats look pretty old by todays standards, but for flying around China I guess not too bad.

The MU A300 flight is a must, they won't be around too much longer I suspect, really need to get myself on another flight.

Best Wishes

Mark

Hi PVGAMS,

Thanks from my part too for this insight in domestic flights in China. Coming month I myself will visit China and will fly from PEK to SHA and PVG to HKG. First leg will be on CA also in F, but on the A330 instead. Will I find the old seats on these new Airbuses as well?

If you have any tips for Shanghai, please let me know!

Bedankt!

Best greetings,
Taher

Expansion project
The expansion project Hongqiao airport is designed for the goals of passenger turnover of 40 million, cargo and mail turnover of 1 million tons in 2015. It will include a 3,300 x 60 meters 4E class near-distance parallel runway, a 250,000-square-meter terminal, and other public facilities.

i haven't flown their A330 but i believe it'll be 2-class with angled-flat business seats, similar to MU's A330 on that route which i usually fly.
In China though, always be prepared for equipment changes.
Also, have an open mindset to delays, they are usually inevitable and nothing can be done about it.

Tips for Shanghai:
1. Stay in a central hotel for best experience (in Puxi, near people's square or jing'an temple)
2. Visit the usual tourist spots (Yuyuan Gardens, Shanghai World Financial Center, The Bund - though it will still be closed when you come so i recommend walking along the pudong riverside, Xin Tian Di, countless shopping markets, shanghai acrobatics show, etc)
3. Eat hairy crab, xiao long bao, and have a western meal at one of the puxi restaurants on a clear night to see the Pudong financial district skyline, go to one of the food streets for local dishes and xinjiang bbq.
4. Head out of Shanghai for day trips to Suzhou or Hangzhou and an overnight trip to Nanjing.
5. Bring warm clothes because it'll be cold.

Thanks, already experienced the first changes: flight changed from 744 to 330. Curious to notice which other changes might occur!

Tips for Shanghai

Thanks! I am staying in the Hotel Savoi which is pretty central I guess. I am very anxious to visit Shanghai!
