Now 4 , In Search Of My Next A380 Operator

Sun Nov 29, 2009 3:42 pm

Hello fellow A.NUTTERS, here is my latest report.

Forward

As some of you may be aware, I have been fortunate enough to travel on all 3 A380 operators, for 2 of them on the inaugural flights.

Despite not being that worried about travelling on the AF A380, the release of dates for the service got the better of me.

After much deliberation and constant checking of dates and fares for the flight to JFK I decided I wanted to get on her. Since booking a one way was expensive, I had to booked a return ticket with the return being a cheap sector as this would never be flown, at least by me.

The booking was made, it was august, the flight seemed an eternity away.

Booking was easy on the AF website & it allows you to reserve a seat, however at time of booking I could not allocate a window seat on the upper deck section of economy, it only seemed to show a couple of rows and they were all occupied, so I dropped a line to one of our much respected and loved A.NET members, you know who you are – thanks for securing that window seat for me  Smile

As a note, AF changed the aircraft numerous times before I booked, at first it looked like I could secure my 1st A318 flight, however this changed to a 319, then an ATR42 appeared, which I booked, this was later upgraded to an ATR72.

I had no intention of returning with AF, this had to be a same day trip so to speak, returning same day to London, just the same as the EK inaugural A380 flight I took in 2008 with Roni.

Now I looked at getting back from JFK, I initially planned to take LX via ZRH to experience their new A330-300 fleet, however the fares were crazy money and I lacked sufficient FF miles in my bmi account to get me back in business – business on the return flight was a minimum standard as the outbound was in economy, not something I am used to on a long flight anymore. After much searching a cheap one-way J fare appeared on Delta, $900 one way! – Booked there and then, what a steal!

I’m not keen on the Delta website, it seems fussy and slow, however I do like the ability to see which seats are free before making a booking.

Out of curiosity I kept track on the AF & DL fares for the dates I booked, I’ve never seen so much variance of fares, they seemed to change almost daily, mostly the prices went up, however the AF fare dropped below what I paid the day before I flew.

The day finally arrives!

My lovely wife dropped me off at Heathrow’s Terminal 4 around 7am.

This was my first visit to T4 since February when I flew out on the QF A380 service to SIN, the upgrade works to the terminal exterior and interior are excellent, it’s an amazing transformation from the dark and gloomy place it used to be, well done BAA!

Being quite knackered I decided to get in line at the AF ticket desk to look at upgrading to Business, after 10 minutes I gave up and headed to check-in, seems system problems were slowing them down.

The self service check-in machine would not work on my booking so I got in line to get served by a real person, however a ‘helpful’ AF agent pulled me out and insisted she could get me checked in at a machine, she could not, so she put me in the ‘special assistance’ queue. I’d only been in line for 30 seconds or so when a helpful chap pulled me aside to check-me in at his pc, all done nice and easy. I noted there were some 49 empty J seats on AF006 so decided to try the AF ticket desk again.

I guess I waited 5 minutes before getting to the front, explained what I wanted and was advised I would have to upgrade the entire itinerary, I told her that was pretty inflexible, said thanks and walked off to security. AF are seem to be missing a trick on last minute upgrades IMO.

Security was pretty quick and quite painless, managed to keep my shoes on, always a joy!

T4 airside has not seen the improvements that landside has seen yet, still quite gloomy with a fair amount of work going on in places.

Time had got away with me, picked up a paper and headed to Starbucks for a fix and a muffin or something but the queue was huge so gave up and headed to the gate, it was number 20 for this morning’s flight.

The boarding call came at 07:53, I and the other passengers headed to the podium and then down the jetway, out onto the tarmac for the short walk to the plane.

It’s been a few years since my last F100 flights, these with AA on the ORD-ATL-ORD sector, I’d forgotten how quiet the plane is, at least towards the front.

The interior was in pretty good shape, seats were comfortable and the plane was clean but there was no hiding the dated interior, deep sidewalls, yellowing light fittings and the beige looking walls and overheads, it was like a blast from the past!

Off the bus and into a terminal, the FIDS indicated AF006 would depart from gate 61 in terminal 2E, I decided to head straight over to be in the right place and get in a little spotting.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC02880.jpg
The bus in effect leaves you landside to security has to be cleared again, at least if heading to 2E.

It took 40 minutes from landing to get airside again and that was without any queue at security, I think I got it at the right time. AF were offering a 60 minute connection to this flight on one of the London flights, I’d not risk taking that one.

The reason for the trip

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC02884.jpg
Whilst airside a did a bit of spotting and went to the AF service desks to again look at upgrading just the CDG-JFK sector, both service desks were closed airside, no way I was going to bother going through security again so decided to stick with my economy seat.

Boarding started at 13:48, but it took another 9 minutes until the first passengers were actually allowed to board the plane, I guess the plane/crew were not ready at that point?
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC02895.jpg
Boarding for the upper deck was pretty easy as this is shared with Business class passengers, they share the same entry door on the upper deck, though they have different queue areas prior to boarding.

I have to say I’m not that impressed, the space between the seats is not that great, as with many airline J seats, the window passengers will have trouble getting to the isle if their neighbour is sleeping.

I had hoped the seat next to me would be empty, it was not to be, I got a Spanish seat mate, however she was quite nice. Her husband was in Business Class, poor woman was stuck in economy – later she was invited to Business for a few hours since it was quite empty, however she never received anything more than water whilst there, come one AF, have a heart!

You could tell this was a new plane for AF, it almost reminded me of a first flight experience on SQ380 just over 2 years ago, so many people taking pictures of pretty much everything!, as was I , I felt like I was a kid with a new toy, I know, silly really.

It was quite evident we had a full flight due to the long boarding period, finally it ended and we pushed back off stand @ 13:58 – I’d never had known if I’d not been looking out of the window, so smooth, never felt anything.

I have to repeat my experience of the EK 380, I’m sure these EA engines make more noise than the RR units, though she is still amazingly quiet when compared to a 747 or 777, so much so you actually forget about engine noise and end up annoyed as neighbours around you make too much noise!

Tea/coffee and digestives were served afterwards when the trays were removed, I asked for a G&T & was promised it when the trays were clear, the FA was true to her word, good stuff!

My seat mate headed forward at this stage so I was free to come and go as I pleased.

I took a quick flick through the IFE offerings, seemed pretty ok, should keep most people amused who can’t read, numerous films, tv series and other bits and bobs, the best bit of course are the maps and camera features.

I went back to the galley for some red wine to drink whilst reading my book, however they had run out, so I took a G&T instead. The FA told me this was my last drink as I had already had one after the meal service – what is this about?? If I was looking like I’d had too much fine, but please, 4 drinks!

Starting to feel tired I stuck on Paloma Faith’s album, if you’ve not hear of her have a look, great voice and songs, really great new artist!

Final Comments:-

All in all I enjoyed my Air France flights, the aircraft were clean, crews pretty good, food was ok.

Travelling longhaul economy is not something I am used to these days, however this flight was ok & I’d consider it again on AF A380, though not on flights of more than 6 or 7 hours.

The one thing that stands out is ground operations, they need to throw a few more staff at it, to have 2 service desks in the terminal unattended is unacceptable in my book.

The Jet Train is very easy to use to get around JFK, I just wish it had been lighter, might have made a few more planes whilst getting to T4, in fact if lighter I would have spent a few hours on it!

This would be my first longhaul on Delta since 1993 when I flew DL99 & DL98, Tristar 500’s on the LGW>MIA>LGW route.

Got in line at the Delta check-in area, actually I was first in line but seemed to be ignored by the only free agent, who then called forward a bunch of economy passengers with tonnes of bags, how’s that for Delta service, look after your premium passengers, not!

Another agent became free and I was quickly checked in and advised where the lounge was located.

I did a quick bit of shopping
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03027.jpg
then headed to the lounge for a shower.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03028.jpg
The lounge is ok, but shared by several airlines Given LHR is a flagship route for Delta I would have expected them to run it out of their main terminal to afford premium passengers a proper Delta lounge, or is the Oasis lounge better than Delta’s lounges @ JFK?

Feeling more alive I sat down, grabbed some food, they have a selection of hot & cold food, not bad really, enough to keep you amused for a few hours

however a November evening is not the right time for spotting, but I still made a few. I think the best one was the Avianca 319, very nice indeed!

Great report Mark as usual, althogh I think most of the DL flight got cut off. AF really seems to have missed the boat with the A380, QF business and EK/SQ economy definitely had some wow factor compared to that especially blah AF J product you pictured. I believe they put old F in too.

EK Y was actually very very nice, and the flat QF seats too in J.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
The FA told me this was my last drink as I had already had one after the meal service – what is this about?? If I was looking like I’d had too much fine, but please, 4 drinks!

Sign of the times in Y? AY just cut even beer in Euro Y, CX got grumpy after my 3rd G&T on AMS-HKG, reluctantly gave me a fourth and said next one at breakfast if you want. " Three only" repeated on HKG-BKK. Turkish (which I fly a lot these days), depends on the crew... But more than 5 drinks in Y (Incl the meal wine...ridiculous) just seems not to happen these days.

Hey, Mark,

what a nice Sunday afternoon read.
Checking A.net for something new and you´re long discussed AF A380 story is finally online.

It seems there is something missing with the return Delta part.

Nevertheless a great read and I hope you will fix it soon to catch also the return story.

So, me without any leg on these magic machine looking also for something like this next year.

Best wishes,

Very nice TR.

Love how you just fly to JFK only to return back to LHR a few hours later. Do you feel jet lagged after the flights?

AF's service looks pretty standard.

Seems that you have cut out the DL flight.

Thank you for sharing

Hi Mark,

I have been waiting for this trip report. It definitely lives up to my expectation. Very well detailed with a lot of beautiful pictures!

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I got a Spanish seat mate, however she was quite nice. Her husband was in Business Class, poor woman was stuck in economy

I wouldn't dare saddling my partner with such an experience.

Quoting Lufthansa747 (Reply 1):
CX got grumpy after my 3rd G&T on AMS-HKG, reluctantly gave me a fourth and said next one at breakfast if you want.

Not quite impressive for a so called 5 star airline.

Thanks for sharing, Mark. How about your DL experience?

Cheers,

Hmm, seems most of the Delta fligh is missing, perhaps the post was too big, I'll get it added, bear with me, have to start it again!

Hola Mark!

Thanks for sharing your experiences in A380s.... you must be an expert by now. I guess you are already looking forward to flying the LH.... it seems it is going to be delayed, so do not panic; you will make it sooner or later.

It seems the flight was OK, nothing spectacular, doesn't it?

I have never heard of that thing you mentioned about counting the drinks you take, I am sorry for the crew; BTW, how do they keep track of that? I usually get very thirsty on long hauls... so when flying AF I'd bring along some bottles of water, just in case.

Salut!

So continuing from where I got cut off!

I left the lounge about 21:15 just in case security was a little slow, alas it was not, gate 20 where DL001 would depart from is just to the right once you pass security, it was showing a 20 minute delay so I decided to take a quick walk down the concourse to waste some time, here a a few pictures along the way.

Back at the gate & found a seat opposite the gate area, whilst there one of the agents advised the delay was due to strong tailwinds, so rather than arriving too far ahead of schedule they decided to delay departure, makes sense since Heathrow is busy in the morning, if fact most of the time!
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03045.jpg
Boarding was called @ 21;48 for Business and Delta premium FF members, I was about the 5th or so to board.

This is the best picture I could get of the plane:-

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03047.jpg
Each seat had a large pillow, quilted style duvet and an amenity kit.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03053.jpg
Here is the kit at home, no socks here as I wore them on the plane.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03118.jpg
Initial view of the cabin were of it being quite open, reasonably bright due to the lightish blue leather on the seats, light grey plastics & of course the 777 style overhead bins which are just fantastic compared to the usual 767 bins.

Another observation, this was the youngest crew of FA’s I have ever seen on an international flight by a US carrier, I would say most were less than 30, did seniority kick in and the oldies take the weekend off for Thanksgiving?

Menu’s were distributed followed by newspapers then Champagne or OJ & a small bottle of water. I very much doubt it actually was Champagne, most likely sparkling wine, was ghastly stuff, never had seconds - though it was not offered anyway.

Dinner orders were taken at some point, I decided to take the Salmon & the Greek Salad to start with the Beef as the main.

Delta play boarding music & after the song tell you who was singing it, is this a revenue stream?- it’s quite loud and today was a sort of cross between country & pop, not unpleasant but it just seemed a little out of place, how about something a bit more soothing? especially at this late hour.

The front office came on and announced a slight delay as one of the radios was not working, thankfully it was fixed, we pushed back off stand @ 22:42.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03060.jpg
I don’t have a any other pictures of the taxi out, my camera while small and light is excellent except it is really rubbish in low light – a Sony DSC-T9, can anyone suggest something small but good with low light pictures, I don’t like carting my big Canon around on short trip like this.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03061.jpg
Given the late departure time, taxi to the active was pretty short, 17 minutes later we were airbourne.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03067.jpg
Somebody get maintenacne to fix that fitting!
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03062.jpg
30 minutes after takeoff hot towels were handed out and I mean hot!

It was almost another 15 minutes before drink orders were taken, when they arrived you also received a small bowl of warmed nuts. I quite like the nuts being served in a bowl, nicer than arriving in a bag and you don’t get the bits of dust over you from the bottom of the packet as you try and get that last nut out.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03070.jpg
Despite the late hour, the meal service seemed to take an age to start, I must have been on my 3rd glass of red wine by the time the starter arrived, the red was good as was the started – the crew were excellent in keeping glasses full.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03071.jpg
Thankfully the main arrived shortly after the empty started plates had removed,

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03073.jpg
The beans with red onion were excellent as was the mash, the beef was good but a bit too red for my liking, so much so I did not finish it, my fault, I should have advised how I wanted it cooked.

I declined desert, put the seat into bed mode and dropped off into some much needed sleep.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/AF006%20DL001/DSC03069.jpg
Woke up, about 1.5 hours prior to arrival, the crew were already looking around to see who was awake and wanted breakfast, quick trip to the restroom and I was ready – BTW, the fake wood floor look in the bathrooms looks tacky.

Breakfast consisted of fresh fruit, Hone & Oats Granola, an actimal type thing and warms breads, I ate the fruit and a warm raisen bread thing & washed it down with a cup of Green Tea, Delta do offer teas from a box which I though was nice, but I had my own which I’m quite happy with.

We were now 30 or so minutes out of Heathrow, the crew announced the return to your seat drill etc, I think they should give a 10-15 minute warning so people can use the bathrooms to freshen up etc. I ignore this as did many others, you could tell by the queue for the bathrooms.

I headed down to see if economy was quicker, it sure was, there can’t have been more than 30 passengers down back, I though boarding was completed quickly last night! As a note, Business was a little over half full.

The jebridge was attached to the second door, so behind Business Class, as a result great many of the ‘few’ economy passengers were off the plane before Business.

Immigration was super quick, I was outside the terminal & heading to the car just 23 minutes after landing, quite impressive.

Final Comments:-

Despite being quite tired I enjoyed my Delta longhaul experience, though the check-in experience was not great.

The crews were friendly, food pretty good, seat comfortable, plenty of working space around you, all in all not a bad product.

One thing, speed service up on these late departures, some of us want to eat but also want to maximise the sleep time too.

All in all, not bad, if the price difference vs BA was good, I’d happily book Delta based on this flight.

Trust you enjoyed, feel free to drop comments and questions.

Kind Regards

Mark

Hi gang, thanks for the reads and comments so far.

Not quite sure what happend to the Delta report, it was all there when I did the final preview before posting, anyway, did it again so you can see that sector too.

Quoting Lufthansa747 (Reply 1):
Great report Mark as usual

- Thanks Lari

Quoting Lufthansa747 (Reply 1):
I think most of the DL flight got cut off

- Yes, not happy, took a while to do.

Quoting Lufthansa747 (Reply 1):
AF really seems to have missed the boat with the A380, QF business and EK/SQ economy definitely had some wow factor compared to that especially blah AF J product you pictured. I believe they put old F in too.

- Agreed, its pretty standard, nothing spectial at all. As you say, the J product is blah and yes, I think the F product is not new.

Quoting Lufthansa747 (Reply 1):
EK Y was actually very very nice

- It does look ok, not sure I'd want to travel DXB-JFK or SYD in it though, just too long.

Quoting Lufthansa747 (Reply 1):
and the flat QF seats too in J.

- Agreed, decent seats, slightly bland cabin though.

- Interesting observations, not thought of that.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 2):
what a nice Sunday afternoon read.

- Thanks Markus  Smile

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 2):
It seems there is something missing with the return Delta part.

- Don't remind me!

Perhaps we will manage the LH 380 next year?

Quoting B747forever (Reply 3):
Very nice TR.

- Thanks, good to see you are still lurking, not seen a report folr a while.

Quoting B747forever (Reply 3):
Love how you just fly to JFK only to return back to LHR a few hours later. Do you feel jet lagged after the flights?

- No, don't seem to suffer from it.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 4):
I have been waiting for this trip report. It definitely lives up to my expectation. Very well detailed with a lot of beautiful pictures!

- Thanks, kind words Suryo.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 4):
Thanks for sharing, Mark. How about your DL experience?

- No online  Smile

Quoting Rogerbcn (Reply 6):
Thanks for sharing your experiences in A380s.... you must be an expert by now

- Ha, thanks Roger  Smile

Quoting Rogerbcn (Reply 6):
I guess you are already looking forward to flying the LH.... it seems it is going to be delayed, so do not panic; you will make it sooner or later.

- Yes, I want to get on this one, if LH are true to form it will be on the FRA-MUC run.

Quoting Rogerbcn (Reply 6):
It seems the flight was OK, nothing spectacular, doesn't it?

- Stop on, flight was OK, I think the next 'special' A380's will be those of QR & EY.

Quoting Rogerbcn (Reply 6):
I have never heard of that thing you mentioned about counting the drinks you take, I am sorry for the crew; BTW, how do they keep track of that? I usually get very thirsty on long hauls... so when flying AF I'd bring along some bottles of water, just in case.

- Not sure how they keep track of it, seems big brother is watching us all.

Cheers

Mark

Doesnt DL ask before everyone goes to sleep whether they would like to be awaken for breakfast or not?

Hi Mark,

great report, very enjoyable, I had been waiting for this one. AF's A380 interior is far from being as impressive as EK's or SQ's. And it's quite disappointing that AF has opted for that kind of airshow.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
As a note, AF changed the aircraft numerous times before I booked, at first it looked like I could secure my 1st A318 flight, however this changed to a 319, then an ATR42 appeared, which I booked, this was later upgraded to an ATR72.

Quite surprising to see ATRs being used between LHR and CDG.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I’m not keen on the Delta website, it seems fussy and slow, however I do like the ability to see which seats are free before making a booking.

I found the website quite ok, but yes, it can be a bit slow.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
It took 40 minutes from landing to get airside again and that was without any queue at security, I think I got it at the right time. AF were offering a 60 minute connection to this flight on one of the London flights, I’d not risk taking that one.

No, wouldn't take that risk either.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
First row in economy on the upper deck

Not a good place it seems...

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
so much so you actually forget about engine noise and end up annoyed as neighbours around you make too much noise!

Yes, that can't happen on the magnificent 777!  Wink

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):

Wow, quite a bad surprise.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
The pre-arrival snack service began around 2 hours prior to arrival, a tiny sandwich, some cracker things, OK & Actimel, why Actimel, seems an odd thing to offer, along with OJ and then tea/coffee service.

Who knows, maybe Danone made a good offer to AF...  Wink

Hi Mark,

I really enjoyed your TR. Wasn't aware about your A380 already so short after the delivery. Was this the day that the JFK-CDG flight returned to JFK after take-off due malfunctioning of the autopilot?

Although I would also try to get seats on this little upperdeck, which indeed gives a good feeling, I dislike the cabin layout. AF could've done better with their new flagship. So, a bit of dissappointment here. Said that, this Y-class looks good enough for the US bound flight. Is this seatpitch better then generally on B744/B777 aircraft? And, I like the side-bins for your stuff, B744 upperdeck style. Very handy!

btw, about that 'big brother drink case'. I know that the airline I work for, actually keeps note on passengers bahaviour on board. I found this out myself when checking a galley inflight. The cabin plan is printed on A4 papers and they track times of food and beverage orders. Maybe in case passengers get drunk? Or get ill? I asked later on, but got no answer about this issue  Wink

On my AA JFK-LHR flight I used a lot more drinks, and never heard a complaint from the crew. Even got my full 33cl can of cranberry juice just 20 minutes before landing. I was really pleased by that.

DL's product looks good indeed, but I personally don't like the blue seats. Service looks fine though, but the menu cards a bit cheap. You told me before about that great fare; I really have to keep an eye on those... maybe I will be lucky too someday.
btw, does AF allow you not to use half way of your cheap Y class ticket?

PS - can I join on that LH A380?  Wink

Regards,
Eric

Hi Mark,

It was great to read about your AF A380-experience - you are somehow becoming a real A380-expert! Great pictures of your flights as well - thanks for posting them here!

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
This was my first visit to T4 since February when I flew out on the QF A380 service to SIN, the upgrade works to the terminal exterior and interior are excellent, it’s an amazing transformation from the dark and gloomy place it used to be, well done BAA!

It looks very nice and modern indeed - the ceiling elements remind of the arrivals facilities in T5. I haven't visited T4 for ages so your pictures were interesting for me.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
The boarding call came at 07:53, I and the other passengers headed to the podium and then down the jetway, out onto the tarmac for the short walk to the plane.

It is always nice to enter an aircraft the "real" way without a jet-bridge - at least as long as it isn't raining.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I like the camera options

Great features indeed.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I headed down to see if economy was quicker, it sure was, there can’t have been more than 30 passengers down back, I though boarding was completed quickly last night! As a note, Business was a little over half full.

Not an impressive load factor for such an important route. But maybe this city pair is dominated by BA who offer a much larger amount of flights with (nearly) any possible airport combination.

Just to add to the discussion... Of course my 45-kg weighing ex wife got drunk on KQ J after 5 glasses of champagne. But to deny a decent sized guy a 4th gin tonic is pathetic.

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 8):
- Agreed, decent seats, slightly bland cabin though.

Of course, I hate the design. But bloody comfy to sleep in as the locals would say. Very nice amenity kits and sleep suits too. It was better than BA J comfort wise by a million miles I thought.

Ps. Next up PR EconoLight CEBMNL... with a cancelled Z2 MNLCRK. Already hate the thought of it. So 76E on an A333 and a bus, ahh great.

Hi Mark

Thanks for this wonderful trip report and glad to see that you continue irresistibly collecting A380 trips  Wink as I (hopefully) will too by the end of the year. I am surprised however that this was done in Y, as I imagined you to be a J class stalwart... hehe. Still, it's an interesting pointer for what to expect and avoid on AF. Thanks again and congratulations!

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
As a note, AF changed the aircraft numerous times before I booked, at first it looked like I could secure my 1st A318 flight, however this changed to a 319, then an ATR42 appeared, which I booked, this was later upgraded to an ATR72.

And you ended up on an F100? Was that final change an unscheduled one or did you know in advance? Interesting though that AF is putting a turboprop with no J class on the LHR/CDG route during a morning flight.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Transfer to the terminal via bus, always like this, good for some spotting and even pictures during the ramp tour.

These are always nice, thanks for the tour pics.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Boarding for the upper deck was pretty easy as this is shared with Business class passengers, they share the same entry door on the upper deck, though they have different queue areas prior to boarding.

Glad you managed to snag a seat upstairs. The SQ A380 upper deck economy cabin feels a lot more exclusive in many respects than downstairs... did you get that feeling on AF?

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
The FA told me this was my last drink as I had already had one after the meal service – what is this about??

Wow, they're counting your drinks now in Y class? AF also advertised some self service bars... did you get to see them? Did they exist?

I went back to the galley for some red wine to drink whilst reading my book, however they had run out, so I took a G&T instead. The FA told me this was my last drink as I had already had one after the meal service – what is this about?? If I was looking like I’d had too much fine, but please, 4 drinks!

Wow, never had this before, even on domestic Y flights.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
can anyone suggest something small but good with low light pictures

Try a Canon IXUS, maybe a 100IS or 120IS, very very good cameras. The 100IS is absolutely TINY!

Seems like the J product on the AF380 seems pretty weak, legroom looked average. What were the Y loads like?

Looking forward to some more TRs over the xmas holiday break!

Always enjoy reading your reports!

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
The lounge is ok, but shared by several airlines Given LHR is a flagship route for Delta I would have expected them to run it out of their main terminal to afford premium passengers a proper Delta lounge, or is the Oasis lounge better than Delta’s lounges @ JFK?

That is, in fact, the plan. While I cannot remember the actual date, it was mentioned in another thread that LHR and, I believe, LAX are to move to Terminal 2 since that is the the terminal handling first/business class check in and to afford customers the use of DL lounges vs having to use the shared lounge in T4.

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 7):
We were now 30 or so minutes out of Heathrow, the crew announced the return to your seat drill etc, I think they should give a 10-15 minute warning so people can use the bathrooms to freshen up etc. I ignore this as did many others, you could tell by the queue for the bathrooms.

That's one of my pet peeves. I often notice crews telling people to be seated with their seat belts fastened as soon as descent begins which seems very excessive to me.

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 7):
Another observation, this was the youngest crew of FA’s I have ever seen on an international flight by a US carrier, I would say most were less than 30, did seniority kick in and the oldies take the weekend off for Thanksgiving?

Apparently DL's shortest JFK-Europe flights (i.e. DUB, LHR, MAN) go out very junior. IIRC, it has to do with turnaround time.

amazing TR! The pictures were really good.

Good to know your A380 count is increasing, I believe LH should be your next target  wink .

Myself and a fellow A.netter were desperately looking for some B767-400s within the US, and it has become even more tempting after your JFK - LHR ride!!

I very nearly settled down with a mug of tea and a blanket reading this - excellent report!!! Wonderful detail and pictures. I enjoyed every word. The A380 experience looked great. Can't wait until I get a trip on one!

- Thanks, glad you enjoyed  Smile

Quoting Airpearl (Reply 23):
Thanks for this wonderful trip report and glad to see that you continue irresistibly collecting A380 trips

- Yea, seem to ahve a thing goind on here, not sure how the wife is going to cope as deliveries increase!

Quoting Airpearl (Reply 23):
I am surprised however that this was done in Y, as I imagined you to be a J class stalwart... hehe

- Ha, true but I had to give Y a try again, just to see if I can still do it! The wife won't but In had to try, there are many new carriers of the A380 ahead, some will have to be in Y to get there or on it.

Quoting Airpearl (Reply 23):
And you ended up on an F100? Was that final change an unscheduled one or did you know in advance? Interesting though that AF is putting a turboprop with no J class on the LHR/CDG route during a morning flight.

- Appears the ATR72 was changed on the inbound the night before, not sure why. Rev lack of Business Classs, it's only 2 flights per day without it, not a bid deal in the scheme of things, a sure sign of the times though!

Quoting Airpearl (Reply 23):
Glad you managed to snag a seat upstairs. The SQ A380 upper deck economy cabin feels a lot more exclusive in many respects than downstairs... did you get that feeling on AF?

- Yes, the upper deck seems a little more private, though I suspect this is were AF will place their Premium Economy product when the make the changes.

Quoting Airpearl (Reply 23):
Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
The FA told me this was my last drink as I had already had one after the meal service – what is this about??

Wow, they're counting your drinks now in Y class? AF also advertised some self service bars... did you get to see them? Did they exist?

- I saw the bars, no booze on them, soft drinks were all I saw, though I guess that stops under age passengers helping themselves.

Quoting A1ring23 (Reply 24):
Interesting TR, very different from your other set of TRs, but nonetheless very enjoyable.
Enjoyed your minimalistic yet sharp comments

- Glad you enjoyed, though interested in what you thought was different............

- Me neither until this flight!

Quoting A1ring23 (Reply 24):
Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
can anyone suggest something small but good with low light pictures

Try a Canon IXUS, maybe a 100IS or 120IS, very very good cameras. The 100IS is absolutely TINY!

- Thanks, will have a look.

Quoting A1ring23 (Reply 24):
Seems like the J product on the AF380 seems pretty weak, legroom looked average. What were the Y loads like?

- AF J looks pretty weak, seating/space wise, I'd not book it in a hurry. Loads, F not sure, J less than 50%, Y almost full.

Quoting A1ring23 (Reply 24):
Looking forward to some more TRs over the xmas holiday break!

- Me too, though none will be mine  Sad

- Good to hear, the LHR flights should be out of the main DL terminal.

Quoting OA412 (Reply 25):
Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 7):
We were now 30 or so minutes out of Heathrow, the crew announced the return to your seat drill etc, I think they should give a 10-15 minute warning so people can use the bathrooms to freshen up etc. I ignore this as did many others, you could tell by the queue for the bathrooms.

That's one of my pet peeves. I often notice crews telling people to be seated with their seat belts fastened as soon as descent begins which seems very excessive to me.

- I noticed it as BA give you a 20 minute warning.

Quoting OA412 (Reply 25):
Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 7):
Another observation, this was the youngest crew of FA’s I have ever seen on an international flight by a US carrier, I would say most were less than 30, did seniority kick in and the oldies take the weekend off for Thanksgiving?

Apparently DL's shortest JFK-Europe flights (i.e. DUB, LHR, MAN) go out very junior. IIRC, it has to do with turnaround time.

- Interesting, UA still had OAP's on the EWR-LHR-EWR route when it ran.

Quoting Ojas (Reply 26):
Hi Mark,

amazing TR! The pictures were really good

- Thank your sir  Smile

Quoting Ojas (Reply 26):
Good to know your A380 count is increasing, I believe LH should be your next target .

- Spot on!

Quoting Ojas (Reply 26):
Myself and a fellow A.netter were desperately looking for some B767-400s within the US, and it has become even more tempting after your JFK - LHR ride!!

- DL are a good option, keep an eye on fares, some are really cheap, I think they have trouble filling the planes, just an observation based on fares etc.

Cheers

Mark

Hello fellow A.NUTTERS, here is my latest report

Great report Mark. Glad you got the upper deck as pre reserved. Wouldnt recognise T4 now!

The meal looks ok I love Coconut so would have gone for that. The drink quota sounds like an AF crew member on a power trip to me.

Anyway thanks for the report.

Hi Mark,

Nice work to catch another A380 and an entertaining read as well. I agree with the earlier comments that the AF product looks very bland, both Y and J.

Regarding drinks in economy - OS was very reluctant to give me two beers instead of one on a 2h VIE-HEL flight this summer, but I tricked them a bit to get what I wanted...  Smile

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 13):
Quite surprising to see ATRs being used between LHR and CDG.

I think it has to do with retaining the precious slots at Heathrow - these are subject to a "use them or lose them" -policy - i.e. if an airline doesn't use all of its slots for certain time the excess ones are withdrawn from them and auctioned off. I guess AF has some extra slots due to the reduction of services and the cancellation of their first attempt at cashing on Open Skies - the LHR-LAX route that ran for a while some years ago. I assume they just picked whatever plane and regional partner that would operate the route with the least cost to park the slots. Sure beats what BMI does (or at least used to do) with their ghost LHR-CWL flights.

Hi Mark,

Another great read. Thanks for sharing! And great pics again to accompany.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
business on the return flight was a minimum standard as the outbound was in economy

I'd sure love to have that as a policy of my own as well..

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
this changed to a 319, then an ATR42 appeared, which I booked, this was later upgraded to an ATR72.

But then you got the F100?

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Picture en-route.

Did you happen to see the EK A380 on the same day too?

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I have to say I’m not that impressed, the space between the seats is not that great, as with many airline J seats, the window passengers will have trouble getting to the isle if their neighbour is sleeping.

Looks pretty poor to me

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Here are a few pictures of my seat and the cabin

Gee, that tray table looks a bit small! The remote looks massive in comparison to the TV and it seems funny to have the headphone jack on the seat in front - to me that sounds like having to unplug if someone on the window wants to get out.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I have to repeat my experience of the EK 380, I’m sure these EA engines make more noise than the RR units, though she is still amazingly quiet when compared to a 747 or 777, so much so you actually forget about engine noise and end up annoyed as neighbours around you make too much noise!

The A380 is still fresh in my memory from my flight yesterday. Since I haven't had a long haul flight on the A380 yet, I guess the noise factor hasn't affected me too much. Still need to get an upper deck seat sometime!

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Map

Is there anything else to this map like the other details - speed, time, distance etc?

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
what is this about?? If I was looking like I’d had too much fine, but please, 4 drinks!

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 7):
I think they should give a 10-15 minute warning so people can use the bathrooms to freshen up etc. I ignore this as did many others, you could tell by the queue for the bathrooms.

I concur, it's a little bit silly expecting everyone to be seated straight away and all.

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 7):
All in all, not bad, if the price difference vs BA was good, I’d happily book Delta based on this flight.

Good to know for when my time comes to be able to get that far around the world!

Thanks again!

Nicholas

Hey Mark!

Thanks for a great A380-Marathon TR! I was anxiously waiting for this specific one, let alone, any new BA319-131 TR  Smile

The AF A380 seems very average to me. Seems like the further down you go on the A380 production line, the more standard the service is with less of that 'wow-ness'  Smile

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I had no intention of returning with AF, this had to be a same day trip so to speak, returning same day to London, just the same as the EK inaugural A380 flight I took in 2008 with Roni.

Haha yea! Glad i chose that flight as my inaugural  Smile

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
however the AF fare dropped below what I paid the day before I flew.

Revenue Management maybe? ..
I remember there was a bit of ups and downs on the fares leading to the EK inaugural flight. I would say there may have been a lot of cancellations that may have caused the price to drop a few?

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
My lovely wife dropped me off at Heathrow’s Terminal 4 around 7am.

Not used to you traveling out of T4!... T5 is your terminal! haha

Looks good!

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I guess I waited 5 minutes before getting to the front, explained what I wanted and was advised I would have to upgrade the entire itinerary, I told her that was pretty inflexible, said thanks and walked off to security. AF are seem to be missing a trick on last minute upgrades IMO.

That is quite strange!

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Whilst airside a did a bit of spotting and went to the AF service desks to again look at upgrading just the CDG-JFK sector, both service desks were closed airside, no way I was going to bother going through security again so decided to stick with my economy seat.

No good!

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Boarding for the upper deck was pretty easy as this is shared with Business class passengers, they share the same entry door on the upper deck, though they have different queue areas prior to boarding.

I still think that EK (and eventually LH) has the best configuration that allows for a seamless boarding procedure. It's plain and simple, premium go up and non-premium go down, and you can have both types board simultaneously to save some time.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I have to say I’m not that impressed, the space between the seats is not that great, as with many airline J seats, the window passengers will have trouble getting to the isle if their neighbour is sleeping.

I agree.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Here are a few pictures of my seat and the cabin:-

Mark in Economy on a long-haul flight? Not used to that  Smile hehehe

Having recently revisited the EK-A380 files not too long ago, i have noticed that it is a tad noisier on the lower deck.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Not long after departure the crew were released, amenity packs which include headsets for the IFE

Were the headsets complimentary?

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
I went back to the galley for some red wine to drink whilst reading my book, however they had run out, so I took a G&T instead. The FA told me this was my last drink as I had already had one after the meal service – what is this about?? If I was looking like I’d had too much fine, but please, 4 drinks!

How strange! Running out of wine so soon into the flight?

And why are they putting a limit to the number of alcoholic drinks one can have?

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
to JFK T4 where my Delta Airlines flight would depart from later that night.

Strange that Delta is operating this flight out of a terminal that is not its own.

You said it!

I think the word 'flagship' and Delta's own terminal (is it 2 or 3?) at JFK just never go hand-in-hand. Apparently the airline has put its flagship flights to operate out of T4. If you ask me, and as some have mentioned on this website, the airline is probably too embarrased with the crappy state of its own terminals. haha.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Another observation, this was the youngest crew of FA’s I have ever seen on an international flight by a US carrier, I would say most were less than 30, did seniority kick in and the oldies take the weekend off for Thanksgiving?

I also saw a very young and nice looking set of Delta crew in Dubai. I was quite impressed actually. So i guess they are picking up on how things should be  Smile

Thanks a lot for sharing this TR. So is LH next?  Wink

Hope all is well!

Did Air France pass out a "1st AF A380" certificate, or anything else, to passengers on your flight, or was its significance ignored by the crew?

Hi Mark,

Very much enjoyed your latest Trip Report - always a fan of the detail you put in.

Business does look a little penned in, but economy doesn't look all that shabby.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):

(regarding the alcohol issue)

This reignites in my mind this constant battle I have with some FA's. I'm pretty fresh faced and they instantly consider me unable to cope with some booze. I have always been fine but excuses have run from 'they'll arrest you in Doha' to 'we've closed the galley and done the stock take' (many hours before arrival). I guess its just the luck of the draw. I had a BA from EDI to LHR and got two double gins in the flight time which was decent. That was Gordons not Gibsons too!

Arrival snack is pretty average IMO,

Anyway - glad you enjoyed this final A380 epic,

- It is thanks, trust so with you - when is your next TR due?

All is well here thanks.

I have several TR's brewing up at the moment. Trying to squeeze them in during my free time, so they should pop up here eventually!

Hi,

Wonderful report, I truly enjoyed reading about your A380 experience. The YC seats looked almost bearable.

Regarding the DL part, I strongly feel that DL is among the top US carriers when it comes to long haul business class product. I'm glad you enjoyed your DL experience, I think it sure was time for you to try DL, if you haven't done them since 1993..!  Wink

- I think that is a fair assessment, the next 'impressive' A380 cabin is likely to be Etihad IMO.

I hope so! .. That's definitely one im getting on! ... Those F suites are all that ive been dreaming about lately LOL.

- I'll join you if I can, though it won't be in First!

- Glad all is good, take care and I'm looking forward to the TR's  Smile

BTW - Would be great if you can join us for the LH 380, I have a feeling there will be quite a few on the day!

- I was pleased with DL, still a few areas they could improve upon but I'd be happy to take them again.

Hey, Mark!

Absolutely brilliant TR, as usual!

Small question though - The FIDS at JFK shows the destination for the AI flight as HYD! Is there a specific reason for this? I am aware that you can fly this flight to CCU [I'm not sure about any other cities?] as a one stop, so why show the destination as HYD instead of DEL?

Thanks and again, brilliant TR!  Smile

- The flight terminates in HYD hence having the HYD code, I imagine the screen revolves around to show BOM too as this is the first stop?

Quoting Airpearl (Reply 23):
I am surprised however that this was done in Y, as I imagined you to be a J class stalwart... hehe.

I think what Airpearl said summed it up!  Wink

I just thought your report was more subdued than usual - might have just been me. You let the pictures do most of the talking, which I don't mind at all.
Where's the accelerometer on this thing?

Great pics and nice report. I can't wait to fly the A380. Now that it's flying from JFK to CDG, I should book a trip there, though I have to get from YVR to JFK somehow.

- Yes, I decided to reduce the text, I think I have too much text at times!  Smile + I was just knackered on the DL return flight, I was wishing for my food to arrive so I could sleep.

- Go for it, can't be too hard to get from YVR to JFK? - I'm sure AF will run this bird into Canada when they have sufficient numbers.

Cheers

I had hoped the seat next to me would be empty, it was not to be, I got a Spanish seat mate, however she was quite nice. Her husband was in Business Class, poor woman was stuck in economy – later she was invited to Business for a few hours since it was quite empty, however she never received anything more than water whilst there, come one AF, have a heart!

But They do put a trolley full of drinks out for us economy passengers even on the A340  Smile

Amazing Report and pics  Smile
