Continental Airlines: LGA-IAH, IAH-LGA

Thu Dec 03, 2009 11:50 pm

Hello fellow aviation fanatics! In November my usual travel partner, my dad, and I went to Houston (IAH) to visit family. We went straight from LGA to IAH.

I was looking forward to this trip as it was my first trip on Continental. It was also an interesting trip as CO had recently joined my favorite airline alliance, Star Alliance.
The trip was to be a day trip. We would arrive in the morning and spend some time with my dad’s cousin and then return to IAH for our flight to LGA.

Got up at 0400 to head for LGA:
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/IMG_0815.jpg

Which was apparently too early for my dog to get up! The time on the picture says 0500 as I never turned the time back on my clock after Daylight Savings. (I fix this problem soon)

CO check-in:
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/IMG_0831.jpg

This picture was really taken at 1 minute to 5, not 6. We were planning to take the 0630 flight.

CO gate:
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/IMG_0834.jpg

As I said, we were planning on taking the 0630 flight. We passed by the 0530 flight at about 0520 and asked if we could get onboard that flight. We fly standby and the flight still had seats so we got on! It was cool thinking afterwards that we were in security while most passengers were already on the plane.

I did not take many pictures at first, as it was still dark and I had an aisle seat. Plus I think I was half asleep during taxi.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/IMG_0837.jpg

The flight had about 10 empty seats all together.

After this the time stamp on the photos is correct. The flight took off shortly after 0530am.

Breakfast:
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/IMG_0840.jpg

The free CO breakfast consisted of Total cereal, a banana, with a jug of milk. The total was nice, but I’m not a fan of bananas. I do think it is nice CO still gives free food. It is not much, but still something for free!

On the flight Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban was the film. It was nice to even have a film to watch. I did watch some as I had nothing else to do.

The CO magazine cover was about joining Star Alliance. CO seems to be proud to be joining Star.

Something with Sky Team still written on it:

Shortly before landing I switched to an empty window seat to try and view landing.

The F/A’s were great in almost every aspect. Thank God we had a few hours on this flight! The F/A’s were very slow with the dinner service. We were sitting in the last row, I got up to go to the bathroom, etc. Sat down again…and I don’t think they had moved.

Nice and old:

Sun starting to set, still no food:

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/IMG_1100.jpg
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/IMG_1101.jpg

The dinner consisted of a Turkey sandwich with BBQ sauce, a salad, M&M’s , and Refresh mints. The ‘sandwich’ was not that good. I don’t like BBQ and that did not help. Nice small free meal.

My usual Coke Zero:
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/Murraymountain91/IMG_1104.jpg

Loved getting a can!

It was soon dark and not much happened after that.

It was apparently very windy in NY, and we were told to expect a bit of a bumpy approach. Well..the approach was fine. The landing was one perhaps the first time I was actually a little afraid on a plane. We were shaking and going wide from side to side and I was expecting the pilot to go around again. We hit the ground and went up again before slamming down again and slamming on the breaks.

Even the F/A ‘thanked’ our pilot for the wonderful landing while making her announcements, which I found to be a bit rude to the pilot…the way she said it.

That’s it I’m afraid!!! Thanks so much for reading. It was my first time on CO, and I enjoyed it. Food was not what I would call good…but it was free. I also loved the inflight film and tv shows. I respect CO for keeping these things.

Until next time, Thanks! Comments are always appreciated.

Happy flying,
Tommy

I had the same lousy breakfast to Cancun. Why can't they just serve a large muffin? Either you serve a decent meal or you don't at all.

What would you rather have, a small not so good free meal. or a larger $8.00-$10.00 OK/good meal? Just a thought that crossed my mind. Thanks for sharing your trip with us.

Nice report JFKMan, although I am stunned that you'd fly across the country to spend just a couple of hours with family! (But then again, I'd do it if I could...)

The dinner looked kinda pathetic but yeah, CO gets high marks for at least having it!

Ha ha, I think those are hilarious. I don't understand the connection between a conservative news network and an airport variety shop. Maybe I'd consider buying a Bill O'Reilly action figure if they had them for sale, though. Big grin

I would much rather pay for something decent than eat rubbish and starve. Fortunately I split a croissant at the airport which saved us from starvation.

Some sandwiches / wraps are good. It is a game of Russian Roulette on CO that's why it's better to eat something before the flight just in case.

The food on CO European flights is real rubbish. And lunch back to the USA on the GVA flight is served at 10AM. At least AA to Europe have upgraded their meals which are good.

Thanks -- excellent attention to detail in those photos! Regarding the grits, all they need is a little butter, salt, and pepper. Without that, yeah, they're not so good.

Hey Tom, great report! I've been to both airports myself but as it seems different terminals. CO is the only major international airline from the States I haven't tried yet! I like the pictures of the Houston skyline as I drove there myself last month. Great rental car too!

Thanks for sharing,

Hello(!),

Just to say many thanks for the trip report etc. Lots of pics which is also how I like to write them and how I like to read them too. Having just got back from the US I must say that even though you don't get all the free food like before the ticket prices (at least on American and United) weren't that bad at all and you still have really nice terminals (you had some nice pics of IAH I think there).

Was good to see how CO are though - they look pretty good. The planes look clean and you still get a little free food which is cool too (and of course a drink).

Many thanks,

Pierre.

Nice report & pictures, thanks for sharing.

I do like it that CO still serve some form of food, it might be a bit limited but sure helps pass the time and delay the hunger if you've not had a chance to eat before the flight.

Nice and old:

Old? How...?

Its not old. CO chooses those colors for the control panel. Even the new ones have them.

Hi Tommy,

nice report, great way to spend a day. I was quite satisfied with CO on my recent trip. Reports to follow soon.

Quoting JFKMan (Thread starter):
The total was nice, but I’m not a fan of bananas. I do think it is nice CO still gives free food. It is not much, but still something for free!

It's not too bad in my opinion, some some fruit is better than a sweet muffin.

Quoting JFKMan (Thread starter):
The dinner consisted of a Turkey sandwich with BBQ sauce, a salad, M&M’s , and Refresh mints. The ‘sandwich’ was not that good. I don’t like BBQ and that did not help. Nice small free meal.

I got a hamburger and a cheeseburger on my IAH-PDX and IAH-EWR flights. They weren't bad!

CO's food is not very good. Having said that, to get a hot 'item' on a flight these days is rare so you might as well enjoy it. These are some great pics.

Idk, something about that "star treatment" cover makes me think more and more about a UA/CO merger  Wink

I'd have liked that better.

Hmm...I think you might be on to something here. I presonally see a UA/CO merger and a US/AA merger coming soon.

This response to JFKMan's posting is intended to be tongue-in-cheek; my intention is not to sound sarcastic, flip or fresh nor do I have any criticism of his trip report, which is excellent by the way.

I always laugh when I read comments on airline food served in the US.

Prior to 9/11 all we did was complain and make fun about airline food -- what was served, how it was served and who served it.

A typical conversation upon greeting relatives at ABQ after arriving from ORD, circa 1999/2000: "They served us the most disgusting meal! Supposedly it was fish but honestly I don't know WHAT it was, swimming in some sort of sauce with a side of what I believe was rice or pasta or some such. And then there was a sad, limp green salad with a dressing I've never heard of. Oh! It was just awful! I don't know how they can stand to serve such slop! I'm hungry; can I get something to eat on the way to your house?"

Now it seems that we continue to complain but for the most part it's not about WHAT we're being served it's the fact that they (the airlines) are not serving anything or that they're charging us to eat on board. (Except for CO, that is, and I'll agree with JFKMan that the food may not be great but at least they ARE making the effort.)

Flash forward to 2009. Here is what is being said by my relatives when I greet them in ABQ upon arrival from ORD: "That airline had me on that damn plane for 3 hours and didn't give me anything to eat! Oh sure, they came down the aisle trying to sell me some sort of a 'snack box' for $8 or a sandwich for $10. I just had a soda and some pretzels and figured I could get something to eat on the way to your house. Remember when they used to serve us hot meals on that flight?"

And relating to how long to seems to take to get your meal, it reminds me of Ellen DeGeneres's stand-up in the 90's about airline food. "No matter where the meal service begins it is either the opposite end of the plane or the opposite side of the plane from where you are sitting. And all I can think is, 'Oh no! Those folks are getting their bad food first! Hurry! Hurry!'" (And I'm paraphrasing a bit here.)

Yes, I am old enough to remember hot meals in Coach, even on some shorter flights. I don't see them making a comeback real soon but be assured when and if they do we'll shift right back from "They didn't serve us anything!" to "I can't believe they expected us to eat that dreck!"

LOL.

Everyone, fly safely.

Great TR! I loved the report and the pictures as well! I did however want to ask you two questions.

1.) On the return leg to LGA, do you remember what tail number you were on? I ask because it looks like you were on a new bird.

2.) The picture that says " 11/11/2009 17:38" - is the girl with the black hair a FA? If so I think maybe next time I am going to choose CO instead!  Wink.

Great TR! I look forward to many more from you!

Thanks for taking more than the usual exterior shots of aircraft. It's nice to see the interiors and the insides of various airport sections. All in all a very nice report!
