SAS From Tromsø To London And Back

Tue Dec 08, 2009 10:52 am

Trip report from our London trip with SAS Scandinavian Airlines.
Traveling out from Tromsø instead of my home airport Alta because we had a week vacation and wanted to visit family in Tromsø.
My sister also joined us on this trip.

The fares from Tromsø to London was 2500 with Norwegian and 2800 with SAS. Of course we opted for SAS Since it is our carrier of choice.

We went very early to the airport and to my big surprise I saw a lot of smoke coming from the parkinglot. Grabbed my camera
and took a look and there was a car on fire  Smile Shot some pictures!

Tromsø Airport early morning in November. -5 degrees and no wind.
http://i888.photobucket.com/albums/ac90/egilsml/_MG_1197.jpg

There is no snow yet, and it's getting frustrating. Southern norway is bathing in snow right now and they dont even want it! We do.

Allright, I went to the self service check in and printed our boarding card and bag tags.
http://i888.photobucket.com/albums/ac90/egilsml/_MG_1199.jpg

Dropped it at the bagdrop. 2kg overweight,
but the nice lady wished us a nice flight. I got to use my finger id at arrival so no paper work boarding the plane.

The downside to european flights with SAS is that you have to pay for coffee and tea.

This was as always a pleasant flight with SAS.

Went to passport control, but the lady did'nt even look at my passport!
To collect our baggage that came 10 min later.
Took the Tube to our hotel. No free seats so we had to stand the whole way. But ok!

we spent the days in London shopping, sightseeing and drinking coffee at Starbucks  Smile

http://i888.photobucket.com/albums/ac90/egilsml/_MG_2230.jpg

Then went to Terminal 4 and spotted the self service check inn. Printed our boarding card and bagtags. And dropped it at bagdrop.
Trough security, and we were in the waiting area at the Airport 15 min after arriving with train. Nice in deed.
Got something to drink before i got a text message from SAS: Our plane is delayed. Damn!
So we got 40min extra to kill at the airport. Used the last pund and just waited until the flight gate was given.

Hi Egilsml,

Nice trip report and fantastic photos!

Quoting Egilsml (Thread starter):
there was a car on fire

It's not everyday you see that happening, especially at the airport! Do you know how quickly the fire brigade responded?

Quoting Egilsml (Thread starter):

Wow, I'm fascinated to see cucumber there in the breakfast tray!
Looks a bit small but free meals aren't taken for granted anymore!

Seat pitch seems a little on the short side - any difference between then -700 and -800?

Thanks for sharing!

Hello(!),

Just to say many thanks for the trip report etc. Was cool to see the route having only flown to Oslo (Torp) with Ryanair myself. Would be cool to head up North though and Oslo Gardermoen looks like a really nice airport (and they have free internet too).

Anyway merci again for the report and looks like you had a pretty nice time in England/London too.

Many thanks,

Pierre.

Hey, Egil,

nice story and pictures.
How I miss you´re country.
Done that ride along the Fjords from Alta to Tromso also for two or three times!.

It seems SK provides good service on you´re flights.

Hi, Egil,

Nice report & pictures, thanks for sharing - quite a dramatic start with seeing that car on fire!

Those SAS interiors look quite dated, I'm sure its down to the cloth seat covers.

Enjoyed the pix.

Thanks

Hi,

thanks for the interesting report, and pictures were of good quality too!
Good to see SK performing well on the early domestic run, free breakfast, and judging from the image a good one indeed  Wink Way to go!
But it's a real shame to have SK serving nothing on their Euro-Y-class product. Not even a free cookie or so. If this is the way to obtain the 'real' costsaving for an airline... I sometimes wonder if they couldn't do savings elsewhere. For connections, and the mileage programm SK would also be my choice, but otherwise Norwegian can also get my business.

Regards,
Eric

Hi Egil,
Good report with some great photo's! I havn't been back to Norway since the new airport opened at Oslo but hope to get a couple of days there later this year.
On the photo of your aircraft at Oslo on your return trip I've noticed that some of the ramp area has no snow at all but a lot of the surrounding ramp area has, is there heating under the tarmac to keep this clear & to make it a better working area in the winter snow?

Geez - that's a little scary! Not something you see everyday! The fire department looks like they had yet to show up, not that they could do anything to save this car. Still that is kind of an odd way to start your trip!

Great trip report! Your sister - I assume that is her in several of the pictures - looks like she wants none of your TR business! She looks slightly annoyed, or at least not understanding, of your obsession of taking photos of aircraft and airports! Oh well, too bad for her if that is the case!

Thanks for the report!

Lets answer some questions!

Quoting Gardermoen (Reply 2):
Nice trip report and fantastic photos!

Tnx Nicholas  Smile

Quoting Gardermoen (Reply 2):
It's not everyday you see that happening, especially at the airport! Do you know how quickly the fire brigade responded?

They where pretty fast. The fire station is 5 min drive from the airport so i think 8-9 min.

Quoting Gardermoen (Reply 2):
Seat pitch seems a little on the short side - any difference between then -700 and -800?

The pitch was the same on the 700 and 800. It's tighter on Norwegian than SAS.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 3):
How many gates are there at Tromso?

tnx "Gardermoen". There are 3 Air Bridges in Tromsø

Quoting Freeman300 (Reply 5):

Indeed it was a nice trip, and tnx  Smile

Quoting Genius12 (Reply 6):

Nope, there was nothing "healthy". But maybe it's on domestic flights in Sweden  Smile

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 7):

You are right. Damn!! Last time we went to London it was Terminal 4  Smile

Hi Eric. Yeah, its a real shame on European flight contra domestic flight's. Indeed they could serve free coffee or tea at least.

Quoting Richierich (Reply 12):

Hi Dave. This is quite common in Norway, or at least Northern Norway. Heating the surrounding ramp area and a lot of the stores has it to. So they don't have to remove the snow 24/7. And so the people don't fall and break something when they enter a store.  Smile

Quoting Richierich (Reply 12):

Hi Richierich. The blond one is my girlfriend in the pictures. She is getting used that i am taking photos of everything and she don't care any more! In the beginning she was annoyed but now she let me do my business.  Smile
