Special TR: Preparations For El Al Ind.day Flyover

Tue Apr 20, 2010 10:44 pm

Hey Guys, a bit extra ordinary report, not exactly a “trip report”, but I think you will find it interesting.

Background:
I was invited by El Al Israel Airlines to see the pre-takeoff part of the airline’s Independence day flyover. On April 20th 2010 the State of Israel celebrated it’s 62nd independence day and this year, like last year, El Al made a flyover over Israel (in addition to the traditional IAF flyover) along the Mediterranean coast line and Jerusalem. 4 airliners took part in the flyover: B747-400 4X-ELD “Jerusalem”, B772 ECF “Shderot”, B762ER EAF “Dalyat el-Carmel” and B73G ELD “Ashkelon”.

At first, we were taken (myself and some other Israeli aviation fans) to one of the airline’s briefing rooms, where El Al chief pilot and CEO introduced the flyover procedure to the flight crews.

El Al CEO, (ret) Gen. Eliezer Shkedi (former head of the IAF) in the briefing room:

El Al A340-600 model:

Then, El Al bus took us to the airside where the jets parked, near the airport fire station:

On the way, I saw Sun Dor’s B752 4X-EBS that took me from Bulgaria 6 months ago:
http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/917/imgp4137.jpg

So as Arkia’s latest addition to the fleet, ATR 72-600 4X-AVT:

Then the moment we all waited for – 4 airliners park one after the other, from large to small - “Jerusalem”, the leader of the flyover:

I would like to thank Liron, Idan and to all El Al crew for the invitation and warm hospitality. And to all fellow Israelis – חג עצמאות שמח!

Hi, Jonathan,

another well done story.
Something really unique, for sure not the usual way of trip reports here and also for sure
something not to miss at all.

Great pictures.

! אם ישראל חי

This is a wonderful report. As a proud Jew and aviation enthusiast, these photos mean a lot to me. I cannot wait to see TLV in person when I make my first trip to Israel in the coming months!

This was better than a Trip Report. Thanks.

I assume Arkia's new ATR is 2nd hand? I just read they will operate to Aqaba 2 x a week.

Nope, Arkia's new ATR is brand new. Yes, they will operate to Aqaba, selling vecations to the Arab-Israelis. I saw Arkia ad, selling 3 weekend nights (thr-sun) in 5 ***** hotel (Campinski) + flights from Haifa in $495. Not cheap at all, more expensive then Eilat.

Not much, I guess they got it from Airbus in the late 90s during their attempt to sell A346s to LY.

Awesome report. I love LY, and I love spending Yom Ha'atzmaut in Israel. I actually flew that same Star Alliance 777 from TLV-EWR on April 22.

Toda Raba.

Sounds like a fun opportunity for you.

May there be many many more years of such anniversaries to celebrate.
