I recently flew LHR - AMS to join one of my friends to celebrate his 50th birthday. I was originally booked on BD, but they cancelled the route and rebooked me on BA. My BA flights were then cancelled due to the strike and I was rebooked on KLM!
I am an Elite Plus member of AF's frequent flier programme and as such, I was able to use the relatively new SkyTeam lounge in T4 in LHR. The SkyTeam lounge first opened in July 2009 (just the lower level) and the upper level opened in November 2009. For those who are interested, the lower floor is the location of the old BA Concorde room and the upper level is the old BA Terraces Lounge.
I have concentrated on the lounge in this report. The flight itself was absolutely fine, but nothing to write about! It's only a 45 min flight and I was offered a biscuit and a drink (including wine or beer, although there are no spirits on such a short flight). It was complimentary too.
I'm afraid I didn't take any photos of the KLM Lounge in AMS on my return (I was in the non-Schengen lounge). Aesthetically, it is a very nice lounge, with a stylish interior. It is also the biggest airport lounge I have ever been in - it's huge! The disappointing thing was the very limited selection of food.
Anyway, back to the LHR T4 SkyTeam Lounge. When I entered, the lower level of the lounge was quite busy. I decided to take a look upstairs and found there were only 6 people in it! I guess most people don't know there is an upper level? Upstairs is the same size as downstairs.
It was lunch time and there was a choice of 3 hot dishes - a salmon steak, quiche or vegetarian pasta. I actually had a bit of all 3 and it was quite tasty. There were also sandwiches, salads, cold meats, cheese and nibbles.
In the lounge, there is an 'oxygen bar' where you can go to refresh after a long haul flight. I didn't try it though.
Downstairs, there is also the 'wine bar'. It is quite nice looking and there is a choice of 7 wines (3 red, 3 white and 1 sparkling). In the other bars, there is the same choice of wine in addition to a good selection of spirits, mixers and soft drinks. I had a lovely glass of red wine with my lunch and then had a couple of Johnnie Black Label whiskies.
By the time my flight was ready for boarding, myself and my friend were the only people in the whole of the upstairs lounge! Downstairs was still quite busy though.
