Joyrides Down Under Part 6: Homebound on EK A380

Joyride
Noun: A ride in a vehicle taken solely for pleasure
Verb: A ride in a vehicle with no particular goal and just for the pleasure of it


Ok, there seems to have been a small goal to my joyrides: that of trying out new aircraft and (hopefully) new airlines.


2 International flights.
8 Australian domestic flights, 3 airlines, 4 states, 5 types.
6 New Zealand domestic flights, 3 airlines, 2 islands, 3 types.



Welcome to my next series of Trip Reports. These flights over 3 weeks, summarised above, includes flights on Air New Zealand, Emirates, Qantas, Virgin Blue, Pacific Blue and Jetstar; takes me through New South Wales, Victoria, ACT, Queensland and New Zealand while travelling on 6 different types of planes. I hope you enjoy my journey around eastern Australia and also New Zealand. At the end of the final TR, I’ll write up a comparison between the domestic carriers in both New Zealand and Australia according to my personal experience with them.

This TR covers the return leg with Emirates, back to Auckland. It’ll be a brief TR as I wasn’t feeling very well when I took this flight and also my two previous EK A380 TRs cover most of what I have already covered. It has ended up being another consistency test.

Emirates only has one flight a day operating SYD-AKL and that is flown by the A380. It is a huge plane but in busy periods such as school holidays, it fills itself right up and provides Emirates with a nice little add-on profit. They didn’t have to fly across the Tasman and could have instead opted to stay on the ground in Australia but the layover was made long enough to fit this extra leg in for 4 of their flights. They now operate daily to AKL from BNE, MEL and SYD and also one daily CHC-SYD flight. There are many pros and cons about flying Emirates across the Tasman. Pros being the excellent IFE, food, generous baggage allowance and generally speaking, service whereas on the other side, you have the potential for a very full plane and only early morning flights out of Australia or late evening flights out of NZ with no other choice of flights. It takes one dedicated person some effort to consistently wake up for these flights!
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

The time had come for me to leave Australia once again after a really fun journey trying out different planes. I must have caught the bug for trying out different planes! A short drive to the airport from my cousin and I was at the International Terminal.

The check in queue was fairly long by the time I had reached the airport and there was quite a long wait before I reached the front of the queue. The check in agent was very friendly and I was soon on my way with my bag checked in. I noticed that the plane was delayed and the plane hadn’t even arrived yet so the obvious place in Sydney to head to was the observation deck.

Not long after my plane had arrived, I was off through customs. Sydney Airport had changed a lot since I last travelled there 9 months previously. Now there is one checkpoint for both piers which makes a lot more sense (just in case you go to the wrong set of gates when trying to pass through Customs) but they have also made a huge duty free store at the end of it for everyone to walk through.

Sydney Airport is definitely QF (and OneWorld) orientated and so once you’re through the duty free shop, it’s a much closer walk to their gates. For passengers on most *A and Skyteam airlines, there’s a long walk to the other side of the terminal. And this also applies for Emirates passengers..

When I arrived at the gate area, I found myself in a very similar situation to last time – the whole gate lounge was packed and there were tonnes of people standing around. Maybe it’s time for some of these airports to start increasing seating capacity or do something before hoardes of A380s arrive on the scene. There were tonnes of random announcements for nothing in particular.

Boarding commenced half an hour late, due to the late arrival of the aircraft as I had previously seen. There weren’t any notifications about boarding and the whole place was a shambles. There were people everywhere trying to board. So it’s just like how people want to get off a plane early but instead they all want to get on it at the same time and our plane is an A380! Crazy. It was very poorly managed. I remember back to the first flight I had on the EK A380 where there were actually announcements on who were to board (just like most civilised carriers). I was right at the back of the plane so I decided to jump into the snaking queue.

EDB is Emirates’ 2nd A380 out of a fleet that is forever growing in the short and mid-term. So far 10 have been delivered. The older ones are the ULH configured aircraft with more space and more premium seating and they obviously do the big flights such as DXB-SYD.

By this stage, we were over an hour late. The captain came over the PA and announced that flying time would be 2 hr 25, cruising at 39,000ft. We finally pushed back from Gate 61 at 10:01 local and hot towels were being handed out during pushback. Engines started their soft whine at 10:08 and we taxied to the end of Runway 16R.

The seats at the back of the plane aren’t my favourite in the whale. They’re close to a number of toilets and due to the engines being so quiet, multiple flushes can easily be heard. This would be very annoying for one flying a long sector in the back cabin. I find that the cabin crew rest area makes the 2 sides of 3 feel quite claustrophobic contrary to what the A380 is known to feel like so it’s good to see that they have started to get rid of it. So my favourite section on the A380 still remains the front of the second cabin.

The choice was either lamb or eggs on this flight. Being at the back of the cabin, there wasn’t much hope for getting the lamb and that was soon confirmed. They had run out of lamb, forcing me to settle with the egg.

Meal


The meal was alright, remembering I was still not 100% at the time. But all the salt and pepper was needed to get some flavour out. This time, the meal trolley was closely followed up by the drink trolley which made up for the previous flight with them.

It wasn’t a very exciting flight especially due to the fact that I’ve done this leg a few times already. Who knows why I bothered to do another EK A380 report! Anyway, the rest of the flight was spent resting and listening to my iPod – yes I’ve figured that I’d be better off just listening to my own music sometimes even though there’s a wealth of programmes and music on the Emirates system.. But time flew past and soon we were about to start descent into Auckland.

The next worst part about being at the back of a fully laden A380 is the wait to get out. Once again, just about everyone had crowded the aisles as soon as the aircraft came to a stop at Gate 16. It took between 10 and 15 minutes for me to disembark.

After a quick chat to the flight attendant, he told me that there were 489 passengers onboard that flight.. No wonder there was such a wait!

After experiencing Smartgate (passport control for NZ and Aus passport holders with microchips) in Sydney, it was great to see that AKL’s Smartgate had been opened. Looking at those queues lining up for the booths was quite funny and barely anyone knew about the Smartgates so I was able to walk straight up to them and was cleared within a minute. Too bad baggage took a little while to come out.

I have been quite into EK lately (not sure what is going on in my head)  

I think it is quite rare to see an EK Tasman report on such a full flight!

I have noticed these pop-ups a few days ago at one of EK's outstations. They are new to me, and while they have a sense of 'corn' to them, i still can't take my eyes off them .. and i think this is where EK knows exactly what attracts the eye!

It's just because my holidays coincide with cheap times when people can go.. Quite possibly a lot of Aussies could have started their holidays by then as well. But only a few weeks before that, they were flying a only a handful of passengers on AKL-SYD - something closer to 90 IIRC. My outbound flight was quite full but yeah I wouldn't want to be on a full A380 flight too often!

Thanks SpdBrdConcorde! Do enjoy and savour your first flight on the A380. I can tell you now that all successive flights after the first one just don't match up! I use a Canon EOS 400D/Rebel XTi and the photos in this report were taken with a Canon 10-22mm lens and also a Canon 70-300mm lens for the shots at SYD.

Hi NZ107. A great TR and beautiful sharp photos - esp. from what remains of the SYD Ob. Deck - now a sad kind of place compared to what it was intended to be, with the cafe and all. I guess it didn't work out. To say nothing of the view that has been blocked by the QF new "Palais de Marc".

Hmmm. Another atrocity IMO. Everything considered, what has been done in the last couple of years, to what was once a nice airport, is shameful. Interestingly, whenever I go through there, I always overhear very negative comments from foreign visitors objecting to being herded or led like lab rats through the Duty Free "maze" just after passport control. And that's before you get to the shopping mall to get to the Star/Skyteam flights!

Superb trip report with lovely pictures. Good to know that EK gets her act together on the A380 trans-Tasman service. Impressive that EK flew another 488 passengers with you. Do you know how many passengers were embarking from SYD?

Somehow I envy you on the extensive choice of wide-body trans-Tasman flights.

Hi Nicholas,

Great to be reading anotghr of your excfellent TR's! - pictures are excellent as usual, I think you have a real flair for this, perhaps a future job?

From my one and only EK A380 experience I can visualise exactly where you sat so can agree that the crew rest area does seem to pen this area in and make it feel less spacious.

I've yet to sit downstairs on the A380, though suspect that wull change on my 1st LH A380 flight later this year, stay tuned!

I'm also one of the 'many' taking advantage of the A380 on the LHR-CDG run, no TR as we will be awash with them soon!

Still looking out for the AR TR............

Not the usual stuff, very interesting.

The A380 is on schedule next monday for the first time, so a more interesting read for me.

Thanks for your comments Airbear! Yes, I'm rather disappointed I didn't find out where this place was when I was in Sydney in 2004 when I assume that the cafe was still open. It's still a great place and the good thing is that it's sheltered! That lounge of QF's really killed everything though. At least it's still perfectly good for 16R operations though.

I believe it's happening everywhere around the world now. MEL also has this. I'm led to believe that AKL will similarly follow suit although I think the plan still includes a clear path down the middle. I think it's made much simpler by the fact they only have one security/customs checkpoint. Not much we can really do about it though.

Thanks for your comments, Suryo! I still claim the fact that they are as inconsistent on the A380 AKL-SYD as we have all heard on here but maybe the fact that they operate the flight for 3 hours then get a night in AKL may be pleasing to them. Sorry, not a clue about how many boarded in SYD but it seemed like a lot were Aussies/Kiwis.

I'm very fortunate about certain aircraft that fly down here! However there are so many types that don't visit NZ at all! I do hope to do a 744 leg before NZ retires them. So far I have flown over the Tasman on: A320, A342, A345, A380, 762, 763, 77W.. Could be/have been more!

Thanks Mark! I can certainly dream of travelling the world carefree writing TRs, seeming similar to Markus' adventures! I'm an aspiring market trader at the moment, doing Commerce at uni. Now if I was able to do that for a few years, I'd be able to retire early and be able to entertain you well into your retirement!   Problem being - what sort of market is there for trip reporters? Especially ones as in depth as ones here - are 'ordinary' people willing to read these long as passages?
I really hope the next one won't take too long to get up and I also hope that will be back to the same standard (yes, I'm definitely of the impression that this latest one was substandard even from before I wrote it).

Already are - oh dear. I really can't be bothered sifting through many of the same thing but maybe from across the aisle from another A.Netter! But the whole A380 experience has basically worn off totally for me. I don't see it anywhere near the same as I did for my first flight and I believe that there are many others in the same boat.

Great to see another trip report! I guess you managed to find some time after your exams?

Excellent pictures and details as always - interesting to see the SYD to AKL flight for once. I keep missing it when I fly into New Zealand. It always suprises me how full the EK flights between NZ and Australia are - good use of these birds instead of having them stand around in Australia.

The last few times i was at BKK, they were using the red pop-ups. I was quite surprised to see these ones elsewhere. I was mostly attracted to the Business Class one, as it seductively shows the seat .. Not sure which was prettier, the crew or the seat!

I just think the large trays of the main meal service have a lot going on them. Packets and more packets squeezed in between the plates. Not that i mind because the food in total is quite the quantity, and i am usually full after annihilating the entire tray  

But apparently, those large trays are not on the A380 anymore due to space limitations in the galley! So what you got was the tray that is (or used to be) associated with a refreshment type of service.

Not sure if this is only applicable only to the A380, or is in fact a cost-cutting measure in its true form accross the entire fleet.

This joyride has longevity!

Joyrides in my local town last no more than 5 minutes if the traffic is OK.

EK shows yet again that it is making a very big impression in the trans-tasman market and I am sure QF and NZ will get hot under the collar when they hear of these types of load factors. How many of those would be continueing on from Dubai do you reckon?

I fully agree. There are some flight where one meal is so obviously going to be a popular choice. E.g. a flight that leave in the early afternoon, catering for a demographic that is predominantly meat eating and has few overseas workers, mostly visitors. Of COURSE the lamb in going to be popular! Your flying to NZ for heaven's sake. grrr...

Hey GT, thanks for your comments. Yep, finally on holiday! And I assume you are too! Are you going to have any time to post another TR?

I've become partial towards the A345 ever since April and I'm glad I did take up that opportunity to go on it! Partial indirect persuasion from you, I must add   but I got the message that I should be trying out these other planes rather than to stick to what I've been flying on! Around holiday times, the flights get packed between NZ and Australia and I guess you would have found out that other times are no way near as busy.. But either way, it's great use of the aircraft to send them to NZ! Keep your eyes on the lookout possibly around the weekend for the next one (I hope..)! If you happen to be flying to NZ on EK again, you might be looking to take the A380 via SYD as the other 3 flights into NZ will soon be 77W   That's before they upgrade MEL to A380!

A complete shambles, I don't know if it's the airport company to blame or the ground staff of Emirates. Either way, there should be a (relatively) simple process which should be followed to make sure that things are done in order. But the thing I was also trying to get at was the fact that people ACTUALLY wanted to get on the plane! Because those same people are always the ones who want to be the first off it too! I guess we can't win them all..

Being your first A380 flight, it could have been that you weren't as susceptible to hearing these differences - we were probably just awed at the fact that it was so quiet rather than thinking twice about the noise around us, which in turn has hit on other experiences on the A380. Was your flight full when you first got on the A380? Being on a packed flight, it was no fun at all being in that back part!

Space limitations.. Hmm. I can see how things will become much more squished looking at the above pics! But I must say a full tray as what you're describing is much better than having a big empty tray!

It certainly has. I believe it was one reason why NZ introduced PTVs in their A320s and 763s - to take some of that audience back from EK. But now they're going to cheapen their product once again and it's a real shame. QF have also moved to have PTVs in their trans Tasman aircraft. No idea about the continuation from DXB but I can tell you one thing for sure - I paid NZ$300 return for that flight, the cheapest return fare across the Tasman I'll probably ever get from a full service carrier.

You know what - I actually haven't needed them ever before! I usually save them so somewhere at home I think I have a few packets of salt, pepper and sugar.. That's how average this meal was in comparison to others I've had.

Well thanks for that! I.. Umm.. Can't say the same though! But yes, the consistency factor is something but in true honesty I probably don't have to go to the effort of writing a whole trip report to say whether it was consistent   I still question some parts of EK's service but overall they still seem to impress in Economy. (Talking here basically solely on the A380)

HI, yes. Sadly, for a long time neither I nor my NZ distributor were ever able to get our stuff into Regency DF. We came very close and were finally making progress when AIAL shifted the goal posts. Grrr !! Never mind, you can't win 'em all I guess.

Actually, from your pics it seems that the 'big' trays are used. But the plate that contains the bread in your Feb 2009 pic, used to be a second starter plate. So you would get a starter, and a salad in addition to the rest. Which means, three small plates (two starters and a dessert). And this type of service was served right before arrival into JFK during the A345 days  

On my Toronto flight last year, i think the trays were small, and i was told it was due to space limitations on the aircraft. But come to think of it, on such a long flight there were 2.5 meal services so that could be why the space issue came into place.

I will check my YYZ pics and the menus later!

Roni is correct. Full size meal trays (peach colour) are used for DXB-LHR/CDG/BKK and SYD-AKL sectors while half size trays (green colour) are used for long range flights DXB-SYD/YYZ/ICN which serve two hot meals. This is due to the galley stowage restrictions.

Another factor of the meal choice dilema could be the flight delay. As you didnt push back till 10:00am once the meal cart finally comes around there is less chance of people wanting eggs at say 11am? They may have had breakfast while waiting in the terminal. Whereas, if the flight left on schedule more may have chosen the eggs. Though going to NZ im sure the demand for lamb would still outweigh.

As i mentioned above, when i used to fly EK to/from JFK on the A345, there were two main meal services (in addition to the usual 'As You Like It' snack).

One of those meals was a lighter option served with the smaller tray and less food. The other was the main meal served with the bigger tray and more food (also known as Service Routine 1 or SR1). This bigger tray, the peach colored one, used to come with three small plates of a starter, a salad, and a dessert.

On my YYZ flight last year, green trays (the smaller ones) were offered on both meal services, including SR1. And if i compare with my previous A345 flights, one of the starters has gone missing leaving only two small plates (salad & dessert instead of starter, salad & dessert).

On Nicholas's flights, the peach colored trays (the larger ones) were used for SR1, but also with a missing small plate and hence, one less starter. 

I can only speak of my own experience, and yes quantity is smaller. But whether this is accross EK's entire network or not, i can't really tell.

Only a handful! And of course, me. The aisles were completely blocked which in some cases shows why clambering over the seats in an emergency would be the quickest way to an exit.. There's no sense of patience anywhere. I noticed that from boarding too. It's quite funny as all these people who are eager to leave are stuck at the passport control when I just walk straight past them, through the smartgate and landside in half a minute!

Thanks for commenting airnewzealand! Yes, it's wonderful to have EK serving the Tasman. I'd like to see it opened up to EY as well and then we'll really have a competition on our hands and quite possibly premium fares coming down drastically.

I've taken a look at some of the TRs up here on QF flights (notably the most recent - Qantas Airways Economy Class SIN-SYD QF032 (by AF Cabin Crew Jun 29 2010 in Trip Reports) ) and it seems like it could go either way. At first, I was looking at the QF meal and it does look like a smaller serving portion although it's pretty hard to tell. And deceived also by the fact that dessert is distributed separately. Probably about the same overall but the big tray would look more impressive from a passenger's point of view and therefore the instant impression would be that they give bigger meals.

Not a problem, I have heard rumours the QR may come to NZ from MEL. Interesting if true. A QR rep was recently at Auckland airport with the big guns... Interesting times ahead i guess. I don't know of EY will come to NZ before 2012, as they are esperately trying to turn a profit which looks on track at the moment.

In regards to our SIN-SYD flight, that has to be the worst tray we serve internationally (aswell as HKG-SYD) i have no idea why they donot give much on the trays. I queried this with managers and what came back was research shows asian passengers donot like dairy much thus no cheese...quite suprising, can anyone confirm??

Also I agree with the tray size. Qantas looked into this when they designed the new trays, but because of limited Galley space (As we need space for Snack On Q bags as they are loaded 105%) and OHS rules (2 Crew must be on a cart at once) we couldnt do it. The service would take far too long as currently we fit 36trays per cart. With 1/2 size we would only get 24.

It's a good thing as well otherwise we wouldn't have such good variety down here and NZ would have probably kept going towards LCC status on the Tasman. They've been made to somewhat keep their standards high to win passengers back off EK.

Too bad Sydney is one of the A380 hubs where they get numerous flights operated by the super. They should know better. Quite a disappointment as it did feel more like some pushy queue to get tickets for something when in fact everyone has tickets and there's no need to be the first to board. I don't even remember if they made an announcement for families to board first either!

No worries airnewzealand. No offense taken. I think i just got too excited about the topic  

In a strange way, i sort of like the fact that the additional starter was canned. Makes this heroic monster airline seem as normal as all other airlines

Things have gone downhill since the A380 first started operations! But they still don't have enough room in the departure lounge which is probably the worst thing about it. Barely any room to stand up or even sit down for that matter.
