Wow...if you buy a carpet at the airport...does that make it a "Flying Carpet"??

Sorry...couldn't resist!

You talked about the dress code in Part 1, but could you talk about ties?

I know that Iranian men don't wear ties and this is noticeable on the male flight crew where they otherwise wear the normal "western" pilots uniform...but not the tie... If a foreigner visits Iran would wearing a tie be a bad idea?

Wow, there were some great pictures there - very interesting insights into Iran. One of my friends went on holiday there during the election last year (or was it this year) - he loved it, despite being a bit scary at times. Is the B707 still flying there? Really fancy a trip there, but getting a visa is such a hassle for British.

Another great 2nd part. The photos are so revealing of life in Iran and at the airport. Love the crafts and carpets. I have a Persian rug in my house which I got as a gift and flew it back on IR from THR-LHR with me.

Thank you all for your kind comments and lovely stories/ memories

@Burj- lol to the flying carpet   also yes gov of Iran does not allow Iranian men to wear ties because they know it to be a western thing and they are trying so hard not to westernize Iran but Iranians are very modern people and want to be up to date with fashion etc so it's nonsense but ties are not seen widely in Iran due to the restriction from the gov. Man we have a nasty gov.

Right this is the part I'm confused by...historically in Iran/Persia what did men where? Did they wear shirts and pants/trousers?

My point being that once you are wearing western shirts and pants...isn't it arbitrary to say that a TIE is too western?

I know in some countries, Pakistan, India, Arab countries etc...if you are a man and don't want to wear western clothes, you wear the TRADITIONAL clothes....but if you wear western clothes, then you wear all of it...

@777 way- But many including me find that conservative side very sad and boring and many of those conservative side you saw were fake. Many people are not religious and since they work for the government offices etc. They have to wear conservative clothes or chadors for women so that they don't loose their jobs. In Iran sadly everyone has to fake that they are religious. Our gov. loves to see everyone to be conservative and if u are not they don't like it at all.

@Burj- I don't know neither why ties are not allowed while almost everyone in Iran has wears modern western outfits. we have a very stupid gov. and they can't force people in all ways and in Iran only in villages you can find traditional outfits not in cities anymore.

Truly excellent pictures from Iran - the country is looking beautiful and very contemporary through these pictures! Hearing about the country through the "western press" - it sounds like a hell-hole (my perception, may not be their words), but the pictures reveal it in a totally different light. Kudos to your TR for changing perceptions!

The photos are very interresting at showing the dress code. It's so interesting to see that even such a simple thing like a tie can be contentuos. Living in a very liberal country it is hard to comprehend such strict rules on such a simple thing as what you wear! These photos make me very curious to visit Iran and get first hand experience of the country.
Come with me, there's a place I want you to see, where the leaves are dark, I've got a hiding place in central park.

Quoting burj (Reply 1):

Yes. Ties are inexorably linked to the Shah and are technically banned. That said, most men will wear them in private at things like parties.

It isn't the "real Iran" to Iranians. Iranians are, sometimes to a fault, people who crave modernity.

That's not necessarily the most authentic thing. Iran has always been a country at the crossroads of modernity and the past.

I only felt Tehran to have a different feel all the other cities seemed to have an air about them that was quite like the countryside ways, like moving from rural to Shiraz, Mashhad, Isfahan and especially Zahedan didnt seem as drastic as did Tehran.
