Hello guys, since i'm new here in this forum, please bare with me if i have some minor errors should you overcome. I've been longing to poast my trip since last year but work seems to caught up with me. So here i am posting this 10 months later ( that's damn long the wait) my first trip report of my journey from SIN to HKG.
Last year i've decided to take a break from my busy schedule and also came across airfare promotions done by Singapore Airlines at that period of time. They were offering S$500 plus for return flight from SIN-HKG. My brother decided to follow me, so when i booked for 2 pax which was around S$1,200 plus all taxes included. We've decided to go for 4 days and 3 nights to HKG and my prefered airlines was definitely SQ cause i've personally wanted to try the new A380 service by SQ on this route. It was launched in 7 th July 2009 and since has been a hit with Singaporeans traveling to HKG.
Back to the trip itself. Woke up early at 0530hrs, and had a good shower and prep myself for the journey. An hour later, we got our backpacks and hailed a cab around 0635hrs to the Changi Airport Terminal 3. Usually in the wee hours of the morning in Singapore, traffics along the highways are calm before somebody screws it up in the later part of the morning. Half an hour later we reached Changi Airport Terminal 3 and was impressed by the exterior glass design of the building. Once you step in, it's a fresh and spacious atmosphere that you will get unlike the older Terminal 1. Then we proceeded to a Self Automated Check-in kiosk only for SQ passengers. All i need to do was enter my E-Ticket no, scan the barcode on my passport and within minutes, the printed boarding pass came out from the machine. I had pre-selected window seat.
The check in counters for SQ are packed with Singaporeans taking advantage of the special airfare. Furthermore, it was a damn long holiday for Singaporeans as 9th of August marks the 44th year of independence for Singapore. So many took leave on Friday cause the event was on Sunday and the next day was Public holiday. So most of them would probably start work on the 11th including me...
After we got ourselves checked in, we went to the immigration counters and scanned our thumbs and passport by using the fast track counters for Singaporeans only. It was a breeze going thru customs and security, then we wandered around the terminal a bit before proceeding to our gate which was B7. Many branded shops are available in this terminal unless your the brand loving type. There's also a FIFA Official store in the terminal selling authentic jerseys of teams sponsored by Adidas.
Then we proceed to our gate B7 and saw the SQ 856 pilots and crews heading towards the gate too. After going thru screening, i realised that we were the first few to be in the waiting lounge as i think other passengers may still be stuck in the long queue at the SQ counters. As we took our seats, there she was right in front of me, the A380 being loaded up with cargoes and catering. It's such a beautiful sight to see being it was my first time.
I realised that it was only 0825hrs when we got in the gate so we just sat there and waited for the boarding announcements to be made. At 0915hrs, announcements for boarding are made and as usual, Kris Flyer Silver and Gold, PPS Club members, First and Business Class and families travelling with children are the given priority boarding.
Soon it was our turn to board the plane. And we were greeted by two lovely SQ girls at the door and directed to our seats. As i move long, got a snapshot of the seats and standing in front was a SQ girl greeting me with a smile and showed us to our seats. After stowing our bags up the compartment, we began getting acquainted with the new KrisWorld product. IFE was great, menus featured mostly updated music, movies and sitcoms. Flight paths are also new too. Unfortunately, there's no camera view from the nose, tail and the body like EK's A380s. Still no complains. As it's better than having no IFE at all.
The seat pitch was good too. As the passengers starts to fill up the plane, cargoes are still being loaded. The doors were closed at around 0945hrs and the crew began to hand out hot towels. 10 mins later as we pushed backed, towels were cleared and the plane taxied to the runway. By then the crews are all seated and preparing for takeoff. By the way, our pilot for today was Captain Robert Ting which flew the first service of SQ A380 to SYD. Few minutes later, we were off and away we go. Take off seem to be heavy as it takes up more tarmac than normal planes. As we ascend and cruised at altitude. The crew sprang into action as they hand out drinks to passengers offering OJ and Apple Juice. Special meals are served first as i have pre booked MOML meal online. Menu was Lamb Rendang with Spicy lady fingers with Yellow Rice. Dessert was Apple crumble and salad was Shrimp with couscous. Looks awesome, but the lamb was a bit tough. Other than that was perfect. I noticed that other passengers are given a choice of Nssi Lemak and Omelettes with potatoes and cod fish.
The flight was an uneventful one as the weather was good over the South China sea. The crew were constantly serving drinks and tending to passenger requests, but some seem to be to robotic and it's as if they are forced to smile at passengers. 3 hours of the flight have gone by, and Captain Ting made an announcement that we are beginning to descend towards HKG. The crew started collecting headsets and rubbish and prepared the cabin for landing. As we started descending, we got into a bumpy ride thru the clouds for 2 minutes or so. Oncw we got out of the clouds, i saw on the background of Lantau Islands signalling our arrival to HKG. Heading for our final approach, it seems that the plane was in a minor crosswind as we land. Landing was rough but who cares, as long as you have landed safely is all that matters.
Once landed, we began to taxi towards our designated gate. Once the doors are unarmed and opened, passengers rushed out of the plane as if they were in Amazing Race maybe trying to escape the long line at the customs. We got to the platform of the train that will transport us to the Main terminal where customs are located. Queue was damn long and we had to wait for at least 25 minutes to get thru. I noticed a lot of passengers from the Phillipines and India coming into HKG. Only handful of Singaporeans can be seen. So this marks the end of my first trip. Coming soon my return flight trip report from HKG-SIN.....Adios...
