Skyteam to Canada on the A318/A343

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/CDN1001/CDN1001023.jpg

Bonjour, dear readers,

father and son want to do one or two trips per year together.
Due to some healthy reasons around the family, it wasn´t possible earlier in the year,
when we decide at first for Arizona during the easter vacation periode.
For the summer vacation time, Canada sounds nice, not the first time for me, but for my son.

Staying a week at home, coming in from Italy

Service AF 2509 operated by Air France
Scheduled: 07.20 // 08.40

The large airline alliances offer a good variety of aircraft on this route. The decision for Skyteam, with the main reason on the return leg, is quickly done, more about it later.
KL directly wins our business with the, in terms of separate fees and else, best offer this time.
Four flights booked together for the two of us, that means some 130.00
Euro´s per leg, done some three months in advance.
It´s also possible to secure and change you´re seats of choice on the
long haul legs online.
My status during the time of booking is Silver Elite and that allows us also to select from a couple of seats, not open for the non status pax.
OLCI works perfectly via KL´s website, secured the last row, 22 E/F, on the first leg, no boarding passes printed, there are the bags for the airport, so collecting the real one´s this time.
04.15 am is the setting for the cell phone alarm, at the airport at around 06.00 am, no need to park the car, my wife is doing the shuttle service.
Bags off in a minute at the biz counter, boarding passes printed and through Terminal 3 security in no time.
Here´s a first view to the screen, AF seems ontime from gate 310

It is F-GUGR, the A318 like on schedule, the newest example from 18 in the AF fleet, delivery date 22.02.2007.
Leg. no 8 for me on type and a new registration.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/CDN1001/CDN1001003.jpg
Anyone remember that scratching sound when the pilots prepare the AFAIK flaps,
that lasted for some ten minutes after boarding, till finally the captain is on the speakers, that there is a problem and they need to restart the planes electronic system to secure it.
That works, no further problems to notice.
Last row seating is comfortable today with the free aisle, seat recline is possible
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/CDN1001/CDN1001004.jpg
Nice, the purser handed out refreshment towels for every passenger at the planes door.
Turning on the active 25 today, a rolling takeoff, it is 07.25 am, nearly ontime, cloudy, 18 degrees, what seems the standard in German August 2010, no August with more rain since they ever write it down.
One hour to go now for CDG
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/CDN1001/CDN1001005.jpg
Cockpit crew is from France.
Cabin crew is one, nice younger male, one older male purser and a nice, middle aged female looking typical french.
All announcements in english, french and german.
The safety card, no screens, the safety demo is manual

Service, brioche and free drinks, the nice female offering us also later in the flight more brioches, as much as we want.
Four legs for the cabin crew today STR-CDG-LYS-CDG-TUN, interesting and a nice talkactive FA

Impressive as always, clouds till somewhere above eastern France and from one meter to the other, so it looks like, no more clouds again.
No flightlevel or route information

Finals for CDG
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/CDN1001/CDN1001013.jpg
Touchdown on the 2700 meters runway 26L, it is 08.30 am, ten minutes prior to schedule, 15 degrees only here and partly cloudy

Our plane F-GLZT is the scheduled A340-300, in service with AF since 28.02.2000. One of 18 in the fleet.
Leg no. 5 on type, a new registration.
Cockpit crew is from France, the pilot with a nice, short welcome during boarding.
Window view to the terminal, the safety demo plays on the small screens.
Lots of connecting pax from African destinations on the plane, so it looks like
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/CDN1001/CDN1001040.jpg
Widebodie departure queue from the 4200 meters runway 27L, it is 11.10 am, close to ontime, the temperature is 17 degrees and its still partly cloudy
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/CDN1001/CDN1001042.jpg
Cabin crew, as far as I count, is two male, one european, one african,
and eight female, four european, three african style and one from north africa. Some with a rough style, one young european female serving our part of the cabin real nice and friendly, especially for my son taking good care of him, with several times free drinks and else.
Leaving Europe for a couple of days, 7 hours to go for Canada

Load is close to 100%, no open seat to notice, once more good business
for AF.

from our personal favourite choice.
But the bread rolls, we had some more later, the camembert cheese and also the apple cake, real good.

The flight is ontime, some ten minutes only at immigration, the female officer want to see a written permission from my wife that I´am alone on travel with my son, well, next time, no question and also baggage ist quick.
That mean´s we´re way to early for the prebooked rental car pickup time.
The arrangement is done via emietwagen/traveljigsaw, the car is from Thrifty,
some 210.00 Euro´s, ok, so far.
Some negotiations with the guy there and we´re ready to collect the car now and bring it back during our original scheduled time, that means some three hours extension and nothing to pay for, nice.
A nearly new Toyota Matrix, well done
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/CDN1001/CDN1001095.jpg

Heading for Quebec City now, Canada is also this time, in reality much larger than it feels on the map, arrival at the hotel in the afternoon.
The Ambassadeur at Beauport will host us for three nights, some 70.00 Euro´s per night, it´s easy to reach a couple of targets from here.
The bedroom

And its large indoor pool area
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/CDN1001/CDN1001178.jpg
The hotel is somewhat oldfashioned, but acceptable, what I dislike is the large number of tour groups,
in and out, every day, mostly from Japan, but also from Italy and Spain.

Target´s for example:

My impression about AF is ok, both flights ontime, no baggage lost, acceptable eco service and personal attention for us, sorry my son, on the long haul flight.
Also from a price/earning point of view, ok around the summer vacation time.

After three nice nights in Quebec City, we´re ready to head in northwestern direction for

"Beavers, bears and the MD11 YUL-AMS",

stay tuned, coming up soon.

Dont forget Facebook,
"Markus Klaus Felger", thats me!.

Nice detailed report, Thanks for sharing. I'm still surprised that the seats on the 343 have yet to been refurbished. Back in 2005 I flew on these birds between CDG and ATL (F-GLZA and F-GLZC) and found those seats to be in a horrible state.

Can't wait to see the return trip on the MD11.

Hi Markus,

Finally the long awaited Canada trip of yours. A good read to start the weekend. It seems an exciting journey with many new registrations.

You must have had a fruitful time together with Markus jr. in Canada. Funny that the female official demanded to see a written permission of your wife. I am wondering if this is a standard procedure of a single adult traveling with children into the country.

AF service sounds great again. Good to know Markus jr. was good taken care of by the cabin attendants.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
My status during the time of booking is Silver Elite and that allows us also to select from a couple of seats, not open for the non status pax.

Something you definitely make a grateful use of.

How I miss the temperature.

Not recommended for people with fear of heights.

Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your next installment.

Hola Markus!

Again a great TR.

The impression you gave from AF is quite different to many of the ones expressed around here. They even seem to be a nice airline with nice crews all along.
The constant offerings of food and drinks is a nice touch not usually heard of nowadays.
Pictures of Québec are really nice, you seem to have spent some beautiful days around the area.

May I suggest you visit Capilano bridge in Vancouver next time?.... impressive!

A343 displays these engines which always seemed funny to me, I always wondered how such 'small' engines can take such a big plane on the air. They do not seem to fit, and when compared to B777....

Looking forward to reading the second part.

Salut!

Hi Markus,

Nice read, been looking forward to this.

Good your status changed to Silver, being able to choose seats is a real bonus, as are the extra benefits.

Hi Makus,

A fabulous start to your Canada trip. I'm actually surprised as Air France seemed to be quite good. Normally I always hear bad things about them, but your flights on both sectors seemed good. Food looked edible but the not the best I must admit. Good to hear that they looked after your son on the long haul flight.

What were the selections like on the IFE? The screen didn't look that appealing.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Nice, the purser handed out refreshment towels for every passenger at the planes door.

Something I haven't heard of before.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
The flight is ontime, some ten minutes only at immigration, the female officer want to see a written permission from my wife that I´am alone on travel with my son, well, next time, no question and also baggage ist quick.

What was the reason for this? It seems very odd as I don't think I have heard this happening to anyone else before.

Looking forward to the next installment.

Hi Markus,

Great to read another TR, I was beginning to get withdrawal symtons!

It seems you had 2 solid flights on AF, good to hear. I really like those info screens at the gate, particularly where it tells you what languages they speak onboard.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
cloudy, 18 degrees, what seems the standard in German August 2010, no August with more rain since they ever write it down.

Yep, we know all about rain in August

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):

Crikey, can't you even have a trip together without being questioned?!

Enjoyed your shots of Canada and particularly love the look of those suspension bridges. Can't wait to read about the grizzly bears in the next installment.

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 5):

Yes, he's growing at an astounding rate

Happy flying

Hey, good to see all that comments.

@MSS658:

Quoting MSS658 (Reply 2):
Nice detailed report,

Thank you.

Quoting MSS658 (Reply 2):
I'm still surprised that the seats on the 343 have yet to been refurbished. Back in 2005 I flew on these birds between CDG and ATL (F-GLZA and F-GLZC) and found those seats to be in a horrible state.

Not the best comfort, but ok at all.

@Suryo:

Quoting akhmad (Reply 3):
Finally the long awaited Canada trip of yours. A good read to start the weekend. It seems an exciting journey with many new registrations.

Thank you.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 3):
Funny that the female official demanded to see a written permission of your wife. I am wondering if this is a standard procedure of a single adult traveling with children into the country.

Also my opinion, I was somewhat surprised to hear that.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 3):
AF service sounds great again. Good to know Markus jr. was good taken care of by the cabin attendants.

Sure ok, on our flight.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 3):
Something you definitely make a grateful use of.

Sure.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 3):

Good point.

Quoting rogerbcn (Reply 4):

Again a great TR.

Thank you.

Quoting rogerbcn (Reply 4):
The impression you gave from AF is quite different to many of the ones expressed around here. They even seem to be a nice airline with nice crews all along.
The constant offerings of food and drinks is a nice touch not usually heard of nowadays.

Really not that bad service on our flights.

Quoting rogerbcn (Reply 4):
Pictures of Québec are really nice, you seem to have spent some beautiful days around the area.

Thanx again.

Quoting rogerbcn (Reply 4):
May I suggest you visit Capilano bridge in Vancouver next time?.... impressive!

Something for me.

Quoting rogerbcn (Reply 4):
A343 displays these engines which always seemed funny to me, I always wondered how such 'small' engines can take such a big plane on the air. They do not seem to fit, and when compared to B777....

Thats indeed also my opinion.

@Mark:

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 5):
Nice read, been looking forward to this.

Thank you.

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 5):
Good your status changed to Silver, being able to choose seats is a real bonus, as are the extra benefits.

Definitely, so it is.

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 5):

Hi Markus,

Another great TR. Good to see a longer flight under your belt, that must take your average per sector length up quite a bit!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
My status during the time of booking is Silver Elite and that allows us also to select from a couple of seats, not open for the non status pax.

Yet you still choose the last row!

04.15 am is the setting for the cell phone alarm, at the airport at around 06.00 am, no need to park the car, my wife is doing the shuttle service.

That's another extremely early wake up, especially in terms of Canada Eastern time!

A shame about the food on the long sector.. It didn't seem too bad from the pictures.

Hi Markus,

interesting report about your trip to YUL, good to see you going long-haul. Your A343 had the same interior as the one on my last year's CDG-ATL flight. It's about time to refurbish those.

Good to hear, I can confirm that.

Hello Markus,

great report of the first part of your trip. I like those deboarding pictures, especially the one which shows the wing in detail. Very impressive. And I didn´t know that YUL also has those weird busses, I only saw them once in Washington Dulles before.

What I did not really get is the story with the immigration officer. She asked you for the written permission, you didn´t have one and she just let you go?

Looking forward for the second part of the report, and the MD-11

Hello Markus, great report!

Nice that you got to fly the A318 on AF. It's a pretty rare type, but it's a very nice one to fly. I prefer it much over the B736.
The food on AF looked really nice as usual. Did you get the Champagne in Y on the CDG-YUL sector?

Really strange that the officier wanted to see a written permission from your wife. Was this a one-off, or do they always ask those silly questions?

really stunning TR.
The brioche service on the flight to CDG doesnt look bad at all.
I also find it impressive that AF can fill three planes a day to YUL.
I think the service on the CDG - YUL leg was ok, nothing special but all right for a european airline.
And your Canada pictures are really nice.
Looking forward for the Return leg

Yes, it is standard procedure for travelling to Canada with one parent. IF you leave the US to Canada, they are supposed to check this at check in and if you don't have the affadavit from the other parent, the child cannot travel. I'm a bit surprised she let you go so easily but you arrived from Europe; if you had arrived from the US, it would have been a different story......

AF economy product looks pretty good! They seem to have kept a lot of the little nice touches that many airlines (like BA) have scrapped in recent years: menus, cocktail snack with drinks, large bottle of water with the meal. Impressed!

Very nice report with very nice pictures, Markus!

Thank you.

Quoting The777Man (Reply 25):
Air France looks very good here and that's my experience as well. Quebec City looks great as well. Amazing that there are whales that far up the St Lawrence riv

We had a real nice time there and gone also lucky with the wales.

Quoting The777Man (Reply 25):
Yes, it is standard procedure for travelling to Canada with one parent. IF you leave the US to Canada, they are supposed to check this at check in and if you don't have the affadavit from the other parent, the child cannot travel. I'm a bit surprised she let you go so easily but you arrived from Europe; if you had arrived from the US, it would have been a different story

Thanx for the explanation, so it seems I´am more lucky than I´ve ever know this time.

Thanks for the report!

AF economy product looks pretty good! They seem to have kept a lot of the little nice touches that many airlines (like BA) have scrapped in recent years: menus, cocktail snack with drinks, large bottle of water with the meal. Impressed!

Thank you and indeed no real complaints here against AF.

Handing out menu cards is still a nice touch.

We didn't even get a tray - a sandwich handed out from the trolley, and a drink service...

Hi Markus,

Great stuff, very good pictures especially from around Quebec, something which I would like to do at some point as well. I've been to Montreal, but just to YUL airport some years ago, flying YYZ-YUL-YHZ with AC, I definitely remember those views during the approach.

Flew AF A340s CDG-BOS-CDG back in 2001, so very familiar looking transatlantic flight as well.

Great that you scored another babybus in the progress!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Well, some good friend here calls me a "picky eater",
that´s definitely the case, both, the chicken and much more, the fish, isn´t
from our personal favourite choice.

Well well, who would that be!?

Looking forward to the second part!

That´s not fun!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
AF runs three times daily on the CDG-YUL route, thats impressive and more impressive when we see that also AC and TS have flights today

That sounds very much.

Hi Markus,

Great report and pictures about your trip with your son to Canada. Quebec looks very nice as well.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Service, brioche and free drinks, the nice female offering us also later in the flight more brioches, as much as we want.

Nice service.

That's impressive indeed, shows the obviously high demand on that route.

I'm looking forward to your return trip report.

Really nice report FLIEGER67. Enjoyed you pictures and the level of detail.

Air France and the A318 are yet to feature in my log so it was good to see your impressions.

Quebec looks cool. A real mix of architecture.

Its so nice to see you sharing these experiences with your son. What a excellent way to add to the farther/son bond. Im sure that seeing the world can only be a good thing for his education.

Thanks for the write up.

Not that easy here in Europe to catch the A318 but with AF a good chance to do so.

Hello Markus

Nice to see another transatlantic report from you (not that I'm bored with your other ones though  ). It looks like your son & yourself had a great time in Canada. You know, I think father and son should sometimes do things together like this, good job!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Four legs for the cabin crew today STR-CDG-LYS-CDG-TUN

That will be a busy day for the crew then!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Impressive architecture, hope it hold´s strong!

Having been to CDG 2F, I also liked the architecture of it: very industrial with lots of concrete, creating a nice atmosphere. And security was efficient with friendly staff as well, good points there for the ADP

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
How I like these gate informations

Yep, I like them too, very informative & professional.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 36):
The seat, 48 A/B, last row, two seater, recline is possible

I really like the A34X series for this: 2 abreast at either side, so at least some privacy when travelling with 2 together.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 36):
Spaceship Orion somewhere around the corner?

Ha ha ha they indeed look very funny!

Now let's wait for the return on the MD-11.
