DFW-LAX-SEA-LAX-DFW On AA/AS

Mon Dec 27, 2010 3:34 am

Okay this trip report is long overdue, and now that I'm on break from school, I have some time to write it up. I have family all over the Seattle area, Yakima, and Tri-Cities. I decided I wanted to go visit them during the summer before it was time to head back to school. I spent about 10 days in Washington state. I'm gonna let the picture do alot of the talking.

I was excited about this trip because it involved a lot of firsts for me. First time to both LAX and SEA, first time on a 763, first time on a 734, and first time on Alaska Airlines. I received AAdvantage Miles for the entire trip.

Final routing: DFW-LAX-SEA-LAX-DFW

August 7th, 2010
American 2421
DFW-LAX
Boeing 767-300 (N382AN)

My flight departed at 11:20am, so I arrived around 9:30am to have time for some spotting.

Preparing for the flight to MSP at Gate D21

Our 3x weekly 747 service to ICN. In Summer 2011, the flight will switch back to a 777 but operate 5 days a week.

The mid-morning Eagle push to Mexico. These flights have often already departed by the time I arrive at DFW for work so I enjoy seeing these.

The line-up. Much better in the afternoon, although I love that 747.

I made my way back to D22 for boarding to LAX.

The 767 at neighboring D23 was fitted with winglets, and was preparing for departure 5 minutes after us to HNL.

By this time, I was very excited to be boarding my first 767!

My plane to LAX at D22.

Gate display boards at D22. Sorry about the blurrr

We soon began boarding. I quickly made my way to 34J, crossing to the other aisle!   I was welcomed aboard by our a very friendly flight attendant named Robin, whom I saw in the airport 3 weeks later. When I saw her, I walked up and introduced myself and thanked her for what she does, and being so friendly.

My 767-300 was outfitted with the 777 interior, and was sparkling clean inside. Although the flight went out 100% full in both cabins, many overhead bins remained empty.

Soon enough, the door was shut, all electronics were off (or not   ), safety video started, and we were on our way.

2:48 enroute to LAX on this crystal clear August day. We left around 11:30am, and it was already 98F outside at DFW.

We soon made our turn towards Fort Worth and the west, towards California.

Soon enough, the seat belt sign was turned off and the crew of 9 flight attendants made their way into the aisles.

I got a Sprite with the can, and I also bought a tin of Lays chips.

Soon enough, we began our descent into Los Angeles. It really does go on forever..

As we lined up with the runway, a Southwest 737-700 joined us on the northside for landing as well.

We had a very smooth touchdown in Los Angeles, where the temperature was 35 degrees cooler than that of Dallas/Fort Worth. I was planning on enjoying my 3 hour layover outside.

We had a very short taxi into Gate 49A, and with that, this concludes American 2421.

I needed to obtain my Alaska Airlines boarding pass, so I took the shuttle bus to Terminal 3 on the tarmac!

I recieved my Alaska Airlines boarding pass, and was given a window seat! When I booked the flight, there were no windows available for pre-selection.

I then went outside security to enjoy the weather and walk around the other terminals and curbside.

Inside Tom Bradley

I couldn't get over the 65F temperature in LAX! During the summer, it rarely gets that cool during the night in DFW.

Boarding started quickly, and was very unorganized.

I was welcomed aboard by our purser, Jairo. Working with him today were Jorge, and Louise.

I found my seat, 15A.

Boarding was completed, and the door was shut about 15 minutes behind schedule. Once again, no biggie. The pilot informed us we would make up time in the air, and arrive in SEA on schedule.

We made our way to the end of the runway, and were #1 for departure on the northside.

My first ever sighting of the Pacific Ocean

Soon enough, we leveled off, seat belt sign extinguished, and Louise came by offering food and beverage services. They offered hot food for sale, but I was expecting a picnic dinner aboard the Kaleetan ferry after I arrived in Seattle!

I took a Sprite, and Party Mix.

This 737-400 would then depart for Ketchikan, Alaska after a short sit in Seattle

I met up with my family in the baggage claim area, and they took me right to Downtown Seattle and the ferry terminal were we would take the ferry to Bremerton, and enjoy a picnic dinner aboard the ferry.

In the following days, I got to visit Boeing Field, Paine Field, the Boeing Factory Tour, the Museum of Flight, Ride the Ducks, Ballard Locks, Space Needle, Pikes Market, and other various places. I'm a big fan of antique shops, so I loved visiting some of those in Edmonds while waiting for the ferry to Kingston. All in all, I rode the ferries 8 times while I was there, and I loved it!

Fast forward to Monday, August 16th, 2010-------

Since the family members that I were with on the days leading up to my voyage back home live in Yakima, we stayed in a hotel by the airport the night before I would head back. In the morning, I bid farewell to them in the room, and then just took the courtesy shuttle right to the airport.

I woke up around 5:45am, was down in the lobby by 6:20am for the 6:30am shuttle run to the airport. I ended up being the only person on the shuttle, so I sat up front and had a nice conversation with the driver whom is also from Texas, but moved to Seattle on a whim with $100 in his pocket. Great guy he was. He dropped me off at the Alaska Airlines curbside, and I made my way inside to a check-in kiosk. I really like Alaska's check-in area. Seemed very well organized, although it was a madhouse this Monday morning. After I dropped off my bag, I made my way to security, which was the longest security line I've ever waited in. From the time I got in line, to the time I was inside security, atleast 30 minutes had gone by. There was an woman behind me who had a United flight to DEN leaving 20 minutes from the time we entered the line. Needless to say, she missed her flight to DEN. Being from DFW, I'm not used to the long security lines since each Terminal at DFW has atleast 3 checkpoints.

Soon enough, I got through security and began walking around.

This Alaska 737 was headed for Honolulu

My cousin, an Alaska MVP Gold member gave me a certificate for entrance to the Board Room.

The Board Room was busy with businessmen this morning. A group of businessmen sitting behind me where talking about their delayed flight to San Francisco. Well, atleast you can wait out your delay in the Board Room.

As I was leaving, I stopped by the service desk and asked if there was any chance of me getting the upgrade on SEA-LAX, and they predicted I would miss it by 1. DAMNIT!

Alaska 458
SEA-LAX
Boeing 737-800 (I think N557AS. If someone at AS could look it up, it would be greatly appreciated.)

Around 8:20am, I made my way back to D6 for Alaska 458 to LAX. I went to the desk and asked the agent about the upgrade, and indeed I missed it by 1 person. Oh well. Boarding went by fast, and soon enough I was in 22F, but not before being welcomed aboard by our purser, Abra.

Great TR! I always love when somebody else besides me does domestic TRs. Keep up the good work.

We departed on schedule, and the other 3 flight attendants demonstrated the safety features of our 737-800.

Regretably, that was the last photo I took before my camera suddenly died. There was no warning at all, it just shut off and didn't come back on until I bought new batteries in LAX. It truly was unfortunate because the entire flight was extremely scenic. I had beautiful views of: Seattle, Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, Mount Shasta, the San Fernando Valley, the Pacific Ocean, and the Hollywood sign.

The flight was 2:08 in the air. I recieved the can of soda once again, and party snack mix. We arrived in LAX about 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Great job Alaska Airlines!

When I got off the plane in LAX, I had no American Airlines ticket, so once again I made my way to the Terminal 4 shuttle, and got my boarding pass for LAX-DFW, American 2448. I bought some batteries at a newsstand along the way.

To New York-Kennedy

After I got my boarding pass, I once again decided to go outside and enjoy the California Ocean Breeze, and the great views of the ramp.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs145.ash2/40592_10150234953415527_774370526_14296320_1419002_n.jpg

Soon enough, it was time for me to make my way back into security. The line looked long, but I made it through very quickly.

American 2448
LAX-DFW
Boeing 767-300 (N373AA)

The 767-300 that would take me home to Dallas would be arriving from Dallas as American 2421, into Gate 49A coincidently.

Sorry for the blurrrrr...

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs192.ash2/45525_10150235121480527_774370526_14301404_2618341_n.jpg

N373AA was parked at the gate, ready for the flight back to DFW and equipped with winglets, but the regular interior.

This time I was welcomed aboard by a different purser, but about 4 of the same flight attendants as the DFW-LAX flight worked this flight. I guess this DFW-LAX-DFW 767 quickturn is popular with the same FA's. I recognized them, and told them I remembered them when they offered food and beverage services later into the flight.

Our scheduled departure time was 1:40pm, but we didn't leave until just after 2:00pm. Once again, the captain assured us we would arrive nearly ontime if not on the dot in DFW.

Door closed, electronics off (or not), safety video played, we're on our way home.

Soon enough, seat belt sign extinguished, and the crew of 9 flight attendants began cabin service. I was given the can, and I also purchased a tin of Lays chips, and a large cookie.

As we progressed eastward, we passed some weather.

As we began our approach into DFW, the captain informed us of a line of storms just west of Fort Worth, and we managed to dodge the storms.

Sorry about that. I'll post some other pictures that I took in Seattle at a later time.

For now, enjoy the delayed, second portion of the TR!

Hey Chad, great report! Congrats on getting the new plane types. Believe it or not, but the first 2 pictures of your AA approach into LAX instantly took me back to when I flew into LAX on KLM in 2001! I instantly recognized it! Would love to see your SEA pics.

Thanks for sharing and best regards,

Martijn

Great trip report Chad!!!

Loved all the plentiful and great pictures throughout. Great job getting the new aircraft types and the 767-300s! I've flown on N373AA twice (one trip is featured in a trip report right here in this forum!). I had seat 12G DFW-OGG and 10J CDG-DFW.

I really love visiting LAX too. And going outside, the air is simply invigorating. I always hope to see that Air Pacific 747 at LAX! It's my favorite colorful & rare plane to see there. Congrats on seeing the QF A380! I wonder if it's the one that had the problem in SIN? I think I saw that EVA 773 at Farnborough Air Show a few years ago, if that's a special livery. Their first one was on display there, but this one's registration ends in 3, so they may all have the 777-300ER livery.

I can see my office window in your two pictures of AA HDQ! It's a great office for plane-spotting! Sometimes maybe I don't get enough work done! LOL

Once again, great job!

Nice TR, man. You got some good pictures in there. What is the schedule like for the 3X weekly GRU-DFW flights on the 767?

I liked your LAX photos. I can't believe its been almost 12 years since I've been to SoCal. Gotta change that. Funny how OZ flies their old livery on their 747s into LAX. I had no idea that BA serves SEA with the 747.

Glad you enjoyed your trip!

I love doing TR's though, so every big trip I take you can expect one!

In DFW, the longest I've ever waited was 10 minutes. I've also waited around 25 minutes in OKC, DEN, and DTW; but SEA was definitely the longest I've ever waited. It was rather irritating and mind boggling, because they had approximately 7 lines open, and it was still moving that slow.

Great job Chad! Sounds like you had a good trip especially on those 767s. Those new interiors really do look nice, don't they? :P I was on a 200 or 300 back in 1997 on CVG-MCO operated by Delta, so I barely remember them; since then I've only been on two 400s (both CO). I should try and get on another 767 (non-400) at some point. Those winglets look awesome too!

Nice report Chad, especially nice to see pics from LAX on the ramp level.

I flew AA's 763 in July this year DFW-SCL but only the Business Class cabin had been refurbished on my aircraft, N392AN.

Looking forward to your next report.

The majority of AA's 763's only have the 777 bins in the J cabin, and front Y cabin. There's only about 8 in the entire fleet with the entire aircraft outfitted. I was a lucky guy!

Hello(!),

Just to say many thanks for the report and pics. You had some pretty nice inflight pics on the DFW-LAX leg but all of them really. Shame your batteries ran out for the most picturesque one. But was great to fly with you in writing on American and Alaskan airlines. I was in Chicago last November and took a couple of flights on American and really enjoyed them. Their fares weren't too bad either. Cool you got to see a Qantas A380, it's some might say an ugly plane but it is massive and the wings are just incredible!

Many thanks,

Pierre

Yes, it was one of the 763's that was changed from 717 orders to 767 orders, after the TW merger.

When I landed in LAX from SEA, I could have gotten an even better picture of it, but once again the camera was dead.

Love the enthusiasm! Wish I wasn't so jaded, because you really appreciate the beauty of flight! Sounds like you had a good time in SEA. Living here, I spend most weekends escaping the dreary weather, so it seems like you actually enjoyed it.

Nice trip report. I did some FlightAware research, and I couldn't find any CRJ-700 routes out of LAX. Perhaps it was a sub.

I have a long overdue TR to do as well. The flight (BOS-Ponta Delgada) was flown in 7/10, and I haven't gotten around to it yet. Lol

Yes, it was one of the 763's that was changed from 717 orders to 767 orders, after the TW merger.

So I'm assuming they are the 8 aircraft you mentioned above? Do you know the routes they typically fly or where they are based?

Great TR, Super80! Glad you enjoyed your stay here in the Northwest! Nice work with the pictures--my friend and I had our car battery die while waiting for the Bremerton ferry last week right about where you took your picture (in your first post). Glad to read that you had a positive first experience with AS--I've flown with them a lot less than most folks in town, but I've never had anything but good things to say about them.

Great TR! Lots of beautiful pics!

I think Seattle is the most beautiful city in the US . Best skyline for sure and great outdoors. Overcast is nice but its a bit pushing it. I enjoy overcasts since I come from the sunny Middle East and miss the rains always.

Quoting jetBlueguy22 (Reply 21):

Well, the 777 interior obviously felt more roomy than the regular 763 interior. If I remember correctly, the 2nd 763 (regular interior) didn't have gasper vents. I could be wrong.

Quoting ual757 (Reply 22):

The week I was gone, I escaped record high August temperatures here at DFW! Needless to say, the weather in Seattle felt fabulous to me.

Haha me either which is why I was hoping somebody could shed some light on this. Would have been a nice surprise to fly on a CR7 instead of the regular Q400 to wherever it was headed!

Quoting USAirALB (Reply 24):

They fly any 763 route at AA. Sometimes they do DFW-LAX-DFW or DFW-MIA, and other times you'll see them going to MAD or CDG. It was just my lucky day I guess.

Did you have to wait another hour for the next ferry departure? That happened to us in Bremerton while going back to Seattle on a Sunday evening. Not our battery dying, but missing it because it was too full.

It truly is a beautiful city! I absolutely loved the weather the entire time I was there. One day, the high only reached about 60 degrees, and I had to go inside Target and buy a light jacket because I was rather chilled!

You can go inside the Concorde and the former Air Force One aircraft. The rest are closed off.

I wish! We had to get pushed out of the way by a tug (which to the WSDOT's credit, attempted to give us a jump) and call a tow truck. Pretty frustrating and more than a little bit embarrassing...we were pretty close to the front of the line and it took a bit of traffic control to get everyone else around us.

Quoting triple7man (Reply 28):

The Concorde is open to the public, but the 727/737/747 are not. The Museum of Flight has been restoring the first 727 (in original UA livery) up at PAE for awhile and from what I understand, it will find its way to the museum once a permanent indoor facility is built for the planes on the west side of East Marginal Way (outside). Hopefully the cabin is part of the restoration so that it can be open to the public some years down the road when the facilities open. I'm also crossing my fingers for the museum to find funding to repaint the NASA-loaned 737 (also a first-build) back into the original Boeing house livery, but I'm pretty sure NASA still has to donate the plane for that to happen.
