One Of The Last CO Trip Reports? IAH-LAS B753

Mon Feb 14, 2011 1:29 pm

With my exams finished and my next trip more than a month away I decided to write a trip report about my flight from Houston to Las Vegas with Continental.

I have already written trip reports about my transatlantic flights – on the way to Houston I flew from LHR on flight CO5 operated by B777-200. Due to a technical malfunction that flight was delayed for 12 hours, but it gave me a chance to experience a night time flight from Europe to the USA  You can find that trip report here .

On the way back I flew from Houston to Paris CDG on B767-400, that trip report can be found here .

After a few very enjoyable days in Houston it was time to go to the main destination of this trip – Las Vegas! I really liked IAH, we stayed at Marriot IAH, the hotel is right in the middle of the airport. The rent-a-car center is great – all companies are situated at one place and there are shuttle buses going to the terminals every couple of minutes.

I used Continental online check-in for this flight. In my opinion the CO website is one of the best, it has a lot of possibilities and information and is very easy to use. You can see ship number for your aircraft and check, where it was going to arrive from so you can see if there are any delays. Our B753 was arriving from ORD the night before and it will spend the night at IAH before our morning flight to LAS. There are also a lot of information about CO fleet and onboard services. You can also view the list of standby passengers and upgrade list, so you can check if you were upgraded or if you made the flight (if you are traveling on a standby ticket). Here are some info about CO 753:

http://www.shrani.si/f/6/Zr/216gPYRc/lv01.png

Online check-in was simple and I printed boarding passes with no problem. On the boarding pass there is a lot of information (commercials) about things to do in Las Vegas and also a weather report for the next few days.

On the day of the flight we checked out of the hotel, used the inter-terminal train to get to terminal C and made our way two floors up to the check-in area. There was no line for baggage drop-off so we proceeded to a machine, where you scan your boarding pass, then a CO agent came and asked 'You're going to Las Vegas?' We confirmed and she already had our baggage tags printed, put them on our bags and we were done. Simple.

Next up was the security check which was despite all the bad stories I read from US airports very normal, I had no problems. Here is a picture of our B753:

I was hoping for UNITED titles but no such luck today.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3B/SH/4piE3mwK/lv3.jpg

There are numerous CO aircraft everywhere, this is CO base for sure http://www.shrani.si/f/1t/YR/1x8P720L/lv4.jpg

Another 757 arriving.

http://www.shrani.si/f/10/ko/2xSn6VhW/lv5.jpg

This trip was back in November when the first aircraft were getting the new United c/s. This 757 was one of them.

http://www.shrani.si/f/b/bG/39tCOSX9/lv6.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/32/w/4A7lHF6d/lv7.jpg

I'm not used to flights being sorted alphabetically so it took me some time to find our flight.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1d/eD/1WNfAlhx/lv8.jpg

Here it is!

http://www.shrani.si/f/2/6W/47w5EVEi/lv9.jpg

Freshly painted.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3K/gH/1K0Carmb/lv10.jpg

There is a nice promotion of the 787 at the end of one concourse.

http://www.shrani.si/f/j/sC/YdmcNHU/lv11.jpg

It really looks like CO is looking forward to receiving their 787 and they are very proud to have them on order.

http://www.shrani.si/f/P/Ec/4vcEVw3g/lv12.jpg

Some more aircraft outside. I wasn't able to spot a lot of other airlines (other than CO) from this terminal.

http://www.shrani.si/f/Y/rS/2J9l9aIW/lv13.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/3I/5W/4kMDPueb/lv14.jpg

The gate area was filling up with passengers. Boarding started on time and it was done by row numbers. Since we were seated in the back section we boarded among the first.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3e/FA/xW8iJsS/lv15.jpg

The 753 is looong  There were a lot of announcements made by the cabin crew during boarding. 'Welcome on this CO flight to Vegas'. 'It is a full flight today, so if you have a carry-on suitcase please store them with the wheels facing towards you, they seem to fit better that way.'

http://www.shrani.si/f/2T/gU/1Bliwjsi/lv16.jpg

Before pushback there was also an announcement in an angry tone – 'Please switch off all electronic devices. We will not pushback until every electronic device is turned off!!'

I think that this was meant for those PAX that were still on their phones or sending txt messages. It is amazing how everyone turns their phone off at the last possible time and turns them back on as soon as the wheels touch the ground. You can hear sounds for a new SMS all over the aircraft.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2o/Lq/4uu6v5E/lv17.jpg

The Marriot hotel and the restaurant that I believe is turning around all the time? I didn't have a chance to try it but if I will ever be in Houston again I will go for lunch there, it probably offers some good views of the airport.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1G/XQ/2L7QFR4F/lv18.jpg

Again a closer look at the restaurant.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2z/l2/PZKhgoq/lv19.jpg

There was some construction going on at one of the runways and there was a lot of traffic so taxi took quite a long time.

http://www.shrani.si/f/M/al/3yPSxAtQ/lv20.jpg

Luecke? Anyone has any idea where this is and what it represents? It was visible shortly after takeoff.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3D/13m/7KaFzgA/lv21.jpg

Another view of the Luecke sing.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2U/Mm/1VkBS66R/lv22.jpg

Before pushback there was a video message from the new United CEO informing passengers about the merger.

http://www.shrani.si/f/E/kF/1b65GJ4z/lv23.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/1a/Vh/1dG8A0Hj/lv24.jpg

Salt was played on the overhead screens. The movie was ok to pass some time.

http://www.shrani.si/f/J/Hq/4uvVE3hy/lv25.jpg

Still over Texas.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1V/v0/sL4Saic/lv26.jpg

One drink round was done and we got a nice Biscoff.

http://www.shrani.si/f/f/PX/19r9mpI1/lv27.jpg

Some pictures of the scenery outside:

http://www.shrani.si/f/47/zf/40A7OId0/lv28.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/10/k4/4lhfaLJ2/lv35.jpg

Cabin in-flight. The seats were ok for this flight, not too hard and the seat pitch was ok too.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2T/QG/Za971KI/lv30.jpg

And we soon landed at warm and sunny LAS. Quick taxi and we were at our gate next to another CO aircraft.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1a/NE/22s7XDLQ/lv36.jpg

Our aircraft would fly on to Newark.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2g/aI/1Q98Nu0P/lv37.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/1H/11q/4qONeh8S/lv38.jpg

Yes, we are in Las Vegas  Slot machines inside the terminal.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1r/j0/9diSJXi/lv39.jpg

The city. After a quick train ride we arrived to the baggage claim area.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2l/R4/4cqneIOt/lv41.jpg

Now the baggage claim at LAS is one of the craziest I have seen  'Las Vegas style' with slot machines, a lot of lights and commercials  I liked it.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2g/4h/2ahX1djq/lv42.jpg

During our stay in Las Vegas we went on a weekend trip to Los Angeles and San Diego, the main goal of this trip was to see the LA Kings play. But with me in the group there was no question where our first stop in LA was http://www.shrani.si/f/1J/HR/3oDWoiO6/lv43.jpg

We did not stay at the In-N-Out for as long as I would have liked, but I did see some interesting aircraft departing/arriving.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1d/ry/4ryFeH2b/lv44.jpg

Later that evening we went to Staples Center to see the NHL match between the Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators. The best Slovenian hockey player Anže Kopitar plays for the Kings and he started the game with a great goal.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3T/yp/1k4h7Bkt/lv50.jpg

The Kings are fighting hard for the playoffs this year. I hope they will make it but I will not be too disappointed if they don't as that would mean that Anže will be able to help our national team to stay in division A this May in Bratislava, where we will play in a tough group with Slovakia, Russia and Germany.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2I/TH/43B39tTG/lv51.jpg

With one goal and one assist Kopi was named the first star of the game, the Kings won 4:1.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3n/HX/1Nl63W8X/lv53.jpg

Back to the flying experience – the flight with CO was good, I would not mind flying them again. But I am not sure if I will be able to, since the merger with United is in full swing. It will be interesting to see what the new United will be able to offer.

So the next report will be (hopefully) about my first fifth freedom flight

Thank you for reading,
Blaž

Pretty cool report with great pictures, I enjoyed it!

I concur, however, it would be even better if they had seats in there, too.

Google brought up this page: http://www.satellite-sightseer.com/id/2272 which says it's apparently a family name. "Luecke" is the German word for "gap" by the way.

Great trip report! But one major question...

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I'm not used to flights being sorted alphabetically so it took me some time to find our flight.

I don't understand... How else would the flights be listed???
Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

Thanks for the link, interesting story. Amazing how the sign is made from trees.

In Europe, where I mostly fly, flights are always listed by the time of departure. So when I look at the display I usualy just follow the time until I find my flight.

Nice report. Thanks for posting. Glad you got on a 757-300.

lol not just Europe but in most places around the world other than North America, flights are **always** sorted by departure time, not by the city name!

I can only agree. Especially the fact it's formed by trees (and not by crop or so) is kind of amazing. This monument has grown to last and it sure makes me want to buy some cheap land under a busy airway and attempt a similar stunt, lol... one can have dreams.

Nice Report, I'm sure you're glad that you got to go on the rare & loooong! 753.

CO seems like a decent airline and it is sad to see them go, though I'm looking forward to seeing what the new UA will be like.

Very Cool, can't wait to see the CO/UA 787 in AKL in a couple of years time.

Thanks for the report! Especially since it was on CO.

Luecke?

Wow, that's a pretty neat thing to see. It's huge! Someone put a lot of effort into that. Looking on Google Earth, it's located about 38 miles ESE of Austin, TX.

Once I saw this sentence I knew why you went to see the Kings. . . Anze! Excellent player. I saw him in person as well this season.

Thanks for sharing! Good photos of your flight with CO! Nice views on your way to LAS!

I flew on an NWA 757-300 back in July of 2007, from MSP-SAN and it was the first time for me on the ultra long version of 757 ... that cabin at the back past row 25/30 definitely felt exclusive!

Looking forward to your return trip!

Great trip report! Great Hockey report!

I took a 757-300 from IAH-MCO last year (as part of an MSP-IAH-MCO flight). Man, the 757-300 is awkwardly long.

I heard a couple of FAs saying they have to watch the doors and jetways, as the plane 'shifts' during loading and unloading, and the door can raise/lower and hit the jetway! This would be awkward to say the least!

Again, great report!
Always looking for the longest route with the most transfers.

Yes, I have planned my flights so that I would fly on the 753, 739 and 764. A lot of interesting aircraft in one trip.

I hope I will get a chance to go to an NHL game again, I really enjoyed it. I will probably go to Bratislava for the game against Russia, but I doubt it will be as good as the game in LA.

On my return I have flown with CO B739 from LAS to IAH, but apart form the Direct TV not working there was nothing special about that flight and it was early in the morning and I was a bit late so I do not have a lot of pictures of that flight. I did do a report on my IAH-CDG flight with the 767-400.

Did you stay at a hotel in Las Vegas?

We stayed at a friends apartment, but we did visit all the major (and some not so well known) hotels. Las Vegas truly is a unique place.
