With my exams finished and my next trip more than a month away I decided to write a trip report about my flight from Houston to Las Vegas with Continental.
I have already written trip reports about my transatlantic flights – on the way to Houston I flew from LHR
on flight CO5 operated by B777-200. Due to a technical malfunction that flight was delayed for 12 hours, but it gave me a chance to experience a night time flight from Europe to the USA
You can find that trip report here
On the way back I flew from Houston to Paris CDG
on B767-400, that trip report can be found here
After a few very enjoyable days in Houston it was time to go to the main destination of this trip – Las Vegas! I really liked IAH
, we stayed at Marriot IAH
, the hotel is right in the middle of the airport. The rent-a-car center is great – all companies are situated at one place and there are shuttle buses going to the terminals every couple of minutes.
I used Continental online check-in for this flight. In my opinion the CO
website is one of the best, it has a lot of possibilities and information and is very easy to use. You can see ship number for your aircraft and check, where it was going to arrive from so you can see if there are any delays. Our B753 was arriving from ORD
the night before and it will spend the night at IAH
before our morning flight to LAS
. There are also a lot of information about CO
fleet and onboard services. You can also view the list of standby passengers and upgrade list, so you can check if you were upgraded or if you made the flight (if you are traveling on a standby ticket). Here are some info about CO
Online check-in was simple and I printed boarding passes with no problem. On the boarding pass there is a lot of information (commercials) about things to do in Las Vegas and also a weather report for the next few days.
On the day of the flight we checked out of the hotel, used the inter-terminal train to get to terminal C and made our way two floors up to the check-in area. There was no line for baggage drop-off so we proceeded to a machine, where you scan your boarding pass, then a CO
agent came and asked 'You're going to Las Vegas?' We confirmed and she already had our baggage tags printed, put them on our bags and we were done. Simple.
Next up was the security check which was despite all the bad stories I read from US airports very normal, I had no problems. Here is a picture of our B753:
I was hoping for UNITED titles but no such luck today.
There are numerous CO
aircraft everywhere, this is CO
base for sure
Another 757 arriving.
This trip was back in November when the first aircraft were getting the new United c/s. This 757 was one of them.
I'm not used to flights being sorted alphabetically so it took me some time to find our flight.
Here it is!
There is a nice promotion of the 787 at the end of one concourse.
It really looks like CO
is looking forward to receiving their 787 and they are very proud to have them on order.
Some more aircraft outside. I wasn't able to spot a lot of other airlines (other than CO
) from this terminal.
The gate area was filling up with passengers. Boarding started on time and it was done by row numbers. Since we were seated in the back section we boarded among the first.
The 753 is looong
There were a lot of announcements made by the cabin crew during boarding. 'Welcome on this CO
flight to Vegas'. 'It is a full flight today, so if you have a carry-on suitcase please store them with the wheels facing towards you, they seem to fit better that way.'
Before pushback there was also an announcement in an angry tone – 'Please switch off all electronic devices. We will not pushback until every electronic device is turned off!!'
I think that this was meant for those PAX that were still on their phones or sending txt messages. It is amazing how everyone turns their phone off at the last possible time and turns them back on as soon as the wheels touch the ground. You can hear sounds for a new SMS all over the aircraft.
The Marriot hotel and the restaurant that I believe is turning around all the time? I didn't have a chance to try it but if I will ever be in Houston again I will go for lunch there, it probably offers some good views of the airport.
Again a closer look at the restaurant.
There was some construction going on at one of the runways and there was a lot of traffic so taxi took quite a long time.
Luecke? Anyone has any idea where this is and what it represents? It was visible shortly after takeoff.
Another view of the Luecke sing.
Before pushback there was a video message from the new United CEO informing passengers about the merger.
Salt was played on the overhead screens. The movie was ok to pass some time.
Still over Texas.
One drink round was done and we got a nice Biscoff.
Some pictures of the scenery outside:
Cabin in-flight. The seats were ok for this flight, not too hard and the seat pitch was ok too.
And we soon landed at warm and sunny LAS
. Quick taxi and we were at our gate next to another CO
Our aircraft would fly on to Newark.
Yes, we are in Las Vegas
Slot machines inside the terminal.
The city. After a quick train ride we arrived to the baggage claim area.
Now the baggage claim at LAS
is one of the craziest I have seen
'Las Vegas style' with slot machines, a lot of lights and commercials
I liked it.
During our stay in Las Vegas we went on a weekend trip to Los Angeles and San Diego, the main goal of this trip was to see the LA
Kings play. But with me in the group there was no question where our first stop in LA
We did not stay at the In-N-Out for as long as I would have liked, but I did see some interesting aircraft departing/arriving.
Later that evening we went to Staples Center to see the NHL match between the Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators. The best Slovenian hockey player Anže Kopitar plays for the Kings and he started the game with a great goal.
The Kings are fighting hard for the playoffs this year. I hope they will make it but I will not be too disappointed if they don't as that would mean that Anže will be able to help our national team to stay in division A this May in Bratislava, where we will play in a tough group with Slovakia, Russia and Germany.
With one goal and one assist Kopi was named the first star of the game, the Kings won 4:1.
Back to the flying experience – the flight with CO
was good, I would not mind flying them again. But I am not sure if I will be able to, since the merger with United is in full swing. It will be interesting to see what the new United will be able to offer.
So the next report will be (hopefully) about my first fifth freedom flight
