EVA Air New Business Class: B747 SFO-TPE-HKG

Sat Mar 26, 2011 4:50 am

I flew SFO-HKG and wanted to try EVA Airways. I thought the experience was very nice. The food was quite excellent. It was way better than most USA carrier food, no question. I was very pleased with the food. Also, it was very healthy with lots of fruit for dessert instead of sweets with cream.

The service was outstanding. All the FA's spoke English and were very pleasant. Anytime I asked for something, it was always brought to me promptly. Just great service.

The planes had the new premium laurel business class product. This is basically their new configuration business class that has angled lie-flats and a great AVOD. It was very modern and nice. The angled lie-flat is like Lufthansa's business class--angled and not the most comfortable for sleeping on your side. It's fine for sitting & relaxing, but if you're a side sleeper, this may be less comfortable.

Here is the entire video trip report. I hope you enjoy it:

Nice report. I will be flying to Singapore this June in Laurel Class on BR 17 from SFO. It is scheduled to be a 773.

Thanks. I hope you enjoy the flight. I think the overall product is quite good. The angled lie-flats are just a little bit of a drawback, but overall, it's quite nice.

Thanks! Yes, the food was really good, both the western and eastern style. I was very pleased with the food on EVA. Thanks for the comment!

Another great video/pictures, sfflyer123!

Looks like you had 2 nice flights with EVA Air ... the food does indeed look very nice, and it seems like a nice Business Class service.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the TR.

I have been curious about EVA in recent years. Flew them several times the 90s when they commenced US services and found them quite pleasant, however have shied away from them in recent years do to their non-aligned alliance status.

While the angled seats seem a bit disappointing, I still look forward to using EVA again if they decide to finally join Star. They often have some very good US-Asia premium fares (along with people like Asiana).

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I, like you, was always curious about EVa's product. They tend to be much cheaper than many alliance carriers for these long haul transpacific routes, so I am glad that i was able to see what it was like.

Yes, the vegetarian dishes are usually quite good.

Languages are always neat. It's interesting how when you translate things, the literal term comes out, so it doesn't sound as good.

Chanterelle mushrooms = white and brown fungus

Pan-fried sweetbreads = calf thymus gored out in large pieces and fried with oil

Fried Calamari = small decapitated squid with fried tentacles

The restaurant menus make the stuff sound so good, but when you do a literal translation, it's less appetizing. Thank you for the comment!

Usually I don't like video reports, but yours was amazing ! Well detailed and nice takes. EVA Air's product certainly doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Hi sfflyer123,

the food looks good and I heard that Eva has a good reputation.
It's the first time I've seen a video report and I really like this one!
I hope the following video reports will be like this one.

Really enjoyed your trip report and video. Eva Air looks like a fantastic airline, I've been wanting to try them for a while. In your opinion, how would you say they compared to the other Asian majors? (ie: CX/SQ/TG)

Hope you had a great time in HKG, I always enjoyed going there

I have flown SQ and CX, but not TG. I would say EVA is just slightly below CX and SQ. It is still very nice, great service, with great food. But EVA just lacks the "luxury" element of CX or SQ. It is great, but just not "luxurious". Otherwise, it is very good, and it's a great value because it's usually much cheaper than CX or SQ.

What is the strange soup on TPE-HKG you didn't like ?

I didn't see the menus english or chinese, but it looks like one of the chinese slow cook soup.

It is the Chinese soup with lots of the strong herbs--almost like ginger, but not. It's the smell you smell when you walk into a chinese herb store--very strong.
