Flying Experience On Emirates A380 Business Class

Wed Apr 27, 2011 1:49 pm

This is a two part video with minute by minute annotations of the complete flying experience on an Emirates Airbus A380 Business Class from JFK to Dubai and the return leg.

This video was shot on the day after the biggest blizzard in history hit New York/JFK (The Blizzard of 2010). JFK was shut down for nearly a day and left thousands of pax stranded. Incidentally, this Emirates A380 was the first flight to take off, once the airport was opened, the following morning.

PART 1. NEWYORK/JFK TO DUBAI
We takeoff from JFK at 6am for a 13 hour flight to Dubai. We land at Dubai at 3:20am (local time).
Much of the entire flight 13 hour flight was in the dark! We were served a meal upon departure and the crew went by closing all the window shades. Most of the passengers slept the entire way or watched their TVs, it was really quiet.

Personally, I never really saw daylight! I did sleep for 5-6 hours in between and by the time I woke up, it was dark again. Anyways on this video here, you will see -
- the boarding past the First Class section
- all the pre flight amenities
- a kickass take-off roll
- the flatbed
- some of the meals and snacks
- the Airbus 380 Inflight Entertainment
- the upperdeck lounge/bar
- toilets with windows
...and you will be able to soak in the entire overnight flying experience.

PART 2: DUBAI TO NEW YORK/JFK
This is the second part of the experience on an Emirates Airbus 380-800. This is a flight from Dubai to JFK. This flight takes off around 8am from Dubai and reaches New York around 1pm. It's a 14:30 hour non-stop all daylight flight.

We take off and are served breakfast. After that, typical on such ultra long distance flights, the crew goes around and pulling the shades. Inside the cabin its almost dark as night!

The cool thing about flying Business Class on A380 is the upper deck is very quiet. Not only in terms of noise and vibration but because there are fewer passengers on top, you almost never see anyone (on Emirates at least). Its quite amazing to tell you the truth, the seats are designed in such a manner that you'll never see anyone besides the person directly next to you.

Flying during the day gave me a chance to walk around the aircraft to do this video. I went down to the Economy class - and it was so different. Everyone was packed in like sardines (you'll see what I am referring to). If you are flying economy class in a A380 then you got to sit in front section (it so dam quiet there - no noise AT ALL).

Anyways, in this video I tried to skip everything that I showed you in the first part. You are you to see -
- boarding, taxi and takeoff
- a complete walk thru of the Airbus 380 including the economy class
- you will also get to hear the different noise levels from the back of the aircraft to upfront
- various window views out of this beauty
- and of course your short finals into JFK

PS: It's unfortunate that I do videos (with detailed annotations) and don't take any pictures on all my flights and I wish there was a way to embed YouTube videos on here - would have made this flight trip easier to log. But...anyways, hope you enjoy. Cheers!

Nice trip report! That's a pretty cool job you did putting it together as a video like that.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Really detailed trip report. It brings me back to that snowstorm and how chaotic it was.

One factual error to point out though...

Who told you that you were the first plane out after the airport reopened? The airport reopened at 6 pm on the 27 of December for both take-offs and landings. On the 28 there were only skeleton crews on the ramp and so there were a/c that arrived from Europe and Asia sitting on the ramp sometimes for 9 hours waiting for a gate to open up. Many of these aircraft were still waiting for gates overnight. I think more likely lack of gate space is why you had a delay on the 28th to 29th.
Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood.

Quoting Lufthansa411 (Reply 3):
Who told you that you were the first plane out after the airport reopened?

We waited all afternoon, then night till 4am that day at the terminal. Initially they had said the airport would open that evening but it did not. I was constantly in touch with various airport duty managers and the information I got from from them. Based on what I saw and what I heard I believe it was the first flight to take off that morning when the airport re-opend.

In anyways a harrowing experience in the terminals.
