Lufthansa Business Class: SFO-MUC A340

Sat May 14, 2011 6:56 pm

I flew San Francisco to Munich on the LH A340. I wanted to get upgraded to F, but there was simply no more room. My company paid C, which was great, but the real treat is to get into F on LH. This was a night flight, and it was great because I slept right after dinner & drinks.

The video trip report has the entire details. I hope you enjoy it!

Here are a few photos of the trip also, but the full report is in the video:

Nice report, thanks for sharing.

Comparing to the competition (even inside LH group), I agree their C hard product is in need of updating.
Sames seats than on their A380.

Thanks. Yes, even though the LX seats have been updated to an excellent product, the LH angled C is still behind. I suspect part of it may be money; for LH to re-do all those C seats in their entire fleet will probably cost them tens of millions of dollars, if not hundreds of millions of dollars. With fewer planes on LX and a more out-dated product, it was probably easier and cheaper to re-do all the LX planes first. Maybe one day, they will get it.

Hey,
thanks for sharing your experience! Nice report. Something different than the usual photo reports

New Business Class seats will be introduced with delivery of the 747-8. Most probably they are lie-flat

Can't say it made me really jump to pick LH to SFO but thanks for sharing - appreciated.

Thanks for another good video, sfflyer123!

Lufthansa looks impressive in their F cabin, but the C cabin looks to be not that amazing. My brother travels every few weeks from JFK-MUC in their C cabin and talks about how the food is pretty uninspiring, and the seat is really not very comfortable as you constantly feel like you're going to slide down! Hopefully they'll upgrade this cabin soon.

Thanks for sharing!

This is great to know. I did not realize that LH was going to re-do their business class. I wonder why they didn't do it with the a380, and they're waiting for the B747-8. IT will be nice when they have new F and C. It will once again be a world class airline with few rivals! Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, for me, I always found that seeing people's trip reports helped me decide whether or not to fly that airline. Hopefully, this TR will help others see the LH C product via video and decide if they want to do it or not. Thanks!

Thank you. Yeah, I remember reading on Flyertalk how many people found LH's food just like UA's food. Personally, I thought LH's food is overall better than UA's food. There is a bit of a European slant to the LH food, no question, but overall, I think the quality on LH is a notch above UA's food. Thank you for the comment!

The food looks good, much better than the food BA serves in business. But I could never sleep in that seat. It looks similar to Finnair's J seat on the A340, which is horrible.

Yes, I wonder if it's a German thing. They weighed every single person's bag in the boarding area. No exceptions. Pretty incredible.

Yes, I agree. The food & service were simply excellent. The seat is just that angled lie-flat which is not the best. It's certainly better than economy, but the angle is annoying.

Thanks for your fantastic Trip Reports, sfflyer123. Your trip reports on the LX and LH C products did help me decide on my upcoming business trip next month. I will be on LX SFO-ZRH based on the fully, lie flat seats (despite the tiny engines on the a340-300).

Thank you for your comment, and I am glad that the videos were helpful for your decision. I was really pleased with the LX service, and I do think it's a step above the LH C product. Even the transfers at ZRH are nicer than FRA in some ways, and the senator lounge at ZRH is also very nice. Thanks for the comment, and have a great flight!

sfflyer123,

Just to add - I had UA, BA, LX, and LH business class options on my next trip. While BA's new Club World seat looks fantastic, all of my miles are with Star and so they were eliminated on that fact alone. I narrowed it down to LH and LX and your trip report broke the tie. While I like UA's seat and love sitting in the upper deck of the 747, I'm just not the biggest fan of their service especially when compared to their European partners in Star. My colleagues have all come back raving about Swiss and their C class, so that says something. I liked your trip report because it brought to life what I've heard anecdotally and from pictures. As you can imagine, I suffer from analysis paralysis when I have too many options.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I think you made the right choice. If you're in C on LX, you will be so happy. I was. It was probably the best business class experience I've had (yes, better than Singapore business class). It was really nice, and the seat is way more comfortable than SQ's seat. I hear what you're saying about too many options. It's our modern society; we just all have way too many options now! Thanks for your comment!

I last flew LH Business in 2004, LAX-FCO r/t. They didn't weigh my carry on, but wanted to see it and I guess they decided that it was too small to weigh. The LAX Business class club was small and except for drinks was unimpressive...no real food.

The B747 business seating in nose section going to FRA was actually kinda tight. I was seated at the window and the guy next to me proceeded to get drunk, spread out all over, trapping me in my seat most of the time. No AVOD. F/A ordered me after takeoff to lower the window shade even though it was pitch black outside. Catering good. Coming back via ORD on A330, I got an aisle seat. There was seat back video but not AVOD. Very attentive service but somewhat forced smiles. Food good but portions seemed small. Seriously considered asking for another entree.

TATL business class, I've only flown LH and what surprised me was this basket of a huge selection of breads and rolls beautifully presented. I will fly LH business again when I can afford it or have enough miles.

Thank you for sharing this experience. That is good to know. I flew LH busines class back in 2005, and I remember that it was just not that impressive. I think they have improved. It's always interesting to see the variation among experiences in various business classes. Thank you for the comment!

LH definitely does a much nicer job in regards to catering compared to United, and that includes short, medium and longhaul in all classes. The catering on UA has gotten very bad and in someways, a joke for what folks pay to fly in F(P) & J (C).
Further, catering out of JFK as well as LAX are far from the best. You will notice a marked difference in the quality compared to LH's European stations, in particular, FRA & MUC. I don't know if this is just what Sky Chefs in general is, or what the airline chooses to spend and the chefs/teams they have doing it.

If you ever have to fly LAX-LHR, try NZ! I think you'll very much enjoy their J cabin and product over BA/UA/VA/AA.

I agree with you. The UA catering is quite bad. However, I will say that in the last year, I have noticed improvements. I remember back in the day, just 2 years ago, much of UA's business class food was simply inedible. It was just gross. Now, however, it has become fairly tasty. Certainly, not as good as LH, but it is pretty tasty, surprisingly!

i am booked on the same flight and i have reserved seats 3ac for me and my travel companion; (lh has the best schedule to get from sfo to cph at the end of a long business day... even with those old business class seating ) can you comment on these seats as compared to rows further back? i heard from my colleague that the leg room in the first row of business is tighter than the other rows... is this true? am i better of selecting 4ac? privacy is important for me on a long night flight....

thank you

Hi Haf,
Your colleague's statement is slightly true! I had the first row seat of J cabin on LH A340-600 and found the leg room alittle bit less than other rows, but it was still reasonably ok. Here is a picture of it. I'll have a detailed TR of this flight pretty soon as well.

The key is to get the window seats, as you have AC. As you can see from amax's photo, the middle seats have no leg cutouts. The window section, however does ( you can see the legroom and the cutout in my video at 1:30) have cutouts which make the legroom tremendous. Thus, if you get the window bulkhead you should be fine. It's only in the middle seats that it may be a problem. Have a great flight!

Nice video report, enjoyed watching it. It gives a nice view of what you get when you turn left instead of right while boarding!
Keep up the good work.
