Cathay Pacific New Business Class Experience

CX 101 Hong Kong to Sydney
11 July 2011
Capacity 38J 223Y
POB 261 + 1 infant / 261
Seat : 18A
Aircraft : A330-343X (Delivered 14 May 2011)
Registration: B-LAL

I would like to dedicate this trip report to all the hard working staff of Cathay Pacific. Their service from the heart, enthuasism and professionalism have impressed me over and over. Cathay Pacific have been on the top spot of my airline flights this year. I would also like to thank you Roni's encouragement on writing this trip report. For many occasions I have been given up posting TR here entirely due to the length it took to write , edit pictures, posting links etc. However, it is hard to resist when you experienced something new first hand. This TR is also probably the quickest one I've ever posted since taken the flight.

With Sydney being the first destination of the newly announced Cathay Business Class flights. I handpicked flight CX101 to fly home during my winter vacation to sample the difference. I was very much looking forward to this flight.

Flight CX101 departs at 2355 out of Hong Kong, and arrives in Sydney at 1110 the next day with a scheduled flying time total of 9 hrs and 15 minutes. I use the Kowloon Station Airport Express in town check in at 9:30pm and arrived at airport at 10pm for the flight. This is quite early for my usual last minute to board standard and I did plan this for a reason…..

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0012.jpg

HKIA was very busy on this summer evening. However it took me less than 3 minutes in total to clear security screening and passport control. It was the most efficient city and airport ever in my opinion!

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0024.jpg

I head to the new Cabin Business Class lounge near Gate 23 as I have never visited this lounge.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0036.jpg

The Pier Business Class lounge is closed for renovation so the Cabin tonight is very crowded with passengers on midnight European and USA flights.

I have some prosciutto and smoke salmon, it was delicious. They serve you at the counter instead of self-serve. There were 5-6 different types of hot dishes include soup, canapés and Chinese Dim Sim plus the usual full service bar available to passengers.

After staying less than 20 minutes in the crowded lounge, I decided it was time to head to departure gate 68. It was a rather long walk which I don’t mind because I am a plane spotter http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0051.jpg

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0052.jpg

At 11:10pm, I have arrived at gate 68 and introduce myself to the gate crew. I enquired about the opportunity to get onboard to snap some pictures before general boarding. My request was met with a very surprising positive response after some checking. The gate agent worked in a super speed walking up and down the aerobridge to organise the photo shoot. I was later told it was almost impossible to have this organised since the flight was not cleared but Cathay own security team for passenger step onboard but the very helpful Cathay agent made my “mission possible!” I hate messy cabin with a passion so the only way to get a proper new Business class cabin photo is to have it taken BEFORE passengers board the flight.

Onboard Cathay New Business Class before everyone else!

The Cabin

The overall feel of the new cabin is much lighter and more elegant. There’s less of Cathay’s deep sea green on the fabric of the seats while the sidewalls are finished in brushed metal with touches of grey and champagne.
Cathay has also gone an extra mile in little touches such as bamboo patterns and abstract prints by Hong Kong artist Maria Lobo on the bulkheads, and a vase containing a fresh-cut flower in front of each set of middle seats.

Business class occupies the very front of the two-class A330-300 and is divided into two cabins.
The frontmost cabin is the larger of the two, with seven rows numbered 11-12 and then 14 through 18 – row 13 is missing.

Snuck away behind the galley kitchen is a second business class cabin (below) with rows 19 to 21, separated from the economy section by a curtain.

The seats

Cathay Pacific’s new business class seats are modified from a base design by French firm Zodiac Aerospace, which markets them as the Sicma Aero Cirrus to airlines around the world

The seats are set into a fixed shell so that reclining them doesn’t steal space away from the passenger behind you.

The aisle side of the shell includes an angled extension adjacent to the head and shoulders to enhance privacy.

A cluster of controls on the side panel includes a reading light (with adjustable brightness), seat adjustment, the IFE (in-flight entertainment) controller, a universal power outlet for laptops and a USB port for charging tablets and smartphones.

After having the whole cabin avail to myself for 5+ minutes, I thank the staff and within minutes, the first batch of Business passengers have arrived to board. I settle down at my seat 18A, the last window seat of main business cabin.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0070.jpg

I have noticed how wide and spacious on the shoulder room once sat down. A big improvement compare with the last version. Cathay seems did their homework and have listened to their customer.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0071.jpg

My welcome drink : Oriental Breeze. This is my all time favourite on Cathay!

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0072.jpg

It’s got everything you need at one place include USB/ AC charger outlet, Composite cable outlet and PC cable port!

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0077.jpg

Agnes B Bon Voyage amenity kits were handed out along menu and immigration/fast track forms. Note the large side table.

We waited for some connecting passengers from Manila and China and pushed back few minutes after schedule. A long taxi to runway 25L and with no traffic holding, we turned onto position and took off with heavy climb out at 0020 with a left turn toward South-easterly direction. Tonight’s journey will fly past the Phillipines(Davao), part of PNG, overfly inland of Queensland before reaching Sydney.

Estimate flying time is 8 hours 44 minutes at FL360.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0091.jpg

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0103.jpg

After the seat belt sign have been turned off, the cabin lighting were kept at minimum with most passenger have turned seat straight into flat bed to sleep. I am well rested before the flight and decide to opt for the dinner and watch a HK Cantonese movie, which Cathay have a good selection on Studio CX, their IFE system.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0087.jpg

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0083.jpg

Dinner service started only a few minutes later. Note the two folded table design was a smart one, it allows you to slide around during meal service and leave your seat at leisure with table open. I can understand some may think the table is a little on the small side.

My choice of dinner was Sea Bass fillet in Cantonese style with Duck strip salad on the side. There is also a light dinner option with soup, salad and fruit serve in one tray.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0107.jpg

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0111.jpg

After the main course, I chose to skip the dessert and cheese for some fruit and tea.

For the next four hours, I was in deep sleep (aka cloud nine) on the new seat.

The seat turned into a full flat bed with over 2m long so I have no problem to sleep my whole body straight. You sleep in an angle (which may take time to get used to) instead of straight forward facing, but you do gain good width and plenty of leg room are offered. With the previous version of herringbone, your feet face the aisle. With the new Business seat, your sleeping position is exact opposite, with your feet face inward.

It’s hard to imagine anybody but the loftiest flyer finding this bed too short for a good snooze. I have no problem changing/flipping side from one to another during sleep.

Flight attentandy told me the new seat on B777-300/ER are wider than the one I experienced, on an A330-300

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0117.jpg

When I woke up, the crew were busy serving a full breakfast with most of the passenger in Business class awake. We’re cruising over Queensland with 2 hours flying time to go.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0121.jpg

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0114.jpg

First sight of Australia!

Yogurt, Cereals, Muffin, Croissant, Chinese congee, Egg Frittata and Dim Sum were among the items served in full breakfast. I have the Dim Sum and it taste just like the Yum Cha I have the day before in Hong Kong. Again, all service requests are met with a smile on Cathay!

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0123.jpg

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0126.jpg

I sleep a little longer after breakfast. The cabin final check took place when I woke up and I opened my window blind, I was met with this glorious Central Coast, NSW view

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/IMG_0131.jpg

My photography instinct kicked in and I started snapping all the way till we land.

A quick taxi follow by turning to Gate 35 at 11:10am, which means we arrived on time.

Last view of B-LAL. For some reason, it looks like a B787 to me……

Summary

On first impressions it’s hard to fault Cathay Pacific’s new business class seats. They’re a smart design with ample space, comfort and amenities for the eight hour trip to Sydney. Cathay Pacific is a very disciplined and service oriented global network carrier. I think it has a rather humble image and publicity comparing to its rival such as Singapore Airlines and Emirates. However, from what I can gather, the business community simply loves Cathay making their Premium Classes very popular and. I have 2 excellent First Class flights with Cathay at the end of last year across the Pacific and this flight to Sydney is no exception in service excellence. The crew’s willingness to co-operate and making the “impossible” request looks simple. I just wish I am on Cathay Pacific again on my next flight!

My opinion of the new Business seat

- Excellent all aisle access
- Improved Privacy especially the single window seat.
- Fully flat bed with good width and length. Good for all kind of passengers shape
- Vast improvement on the shoulder room while seating straight up.
- All IFE/Remote/Gadget/Features in one place and easy to use.
- Good storage room.
- The angled sleeping direction may take some time to get used to.
- The A330 overhead bin in the middle may makes customer feel less head room. Some airlines like Etihad have done away with the middle bin to make it feel more spacious in the cabin.
- A little far reach to window due to seating diagonally but better than previous version seating opposite to the windows.
- As you’d expect from a brand new aircraft the seats were incredibly comfortable – they’ve not even been ‘worn in’, and the entire aircraft still had that ‘new plane’ scent.

Bonus Picture

After 11+ years, Cathay Pacific is having a change of crew uniform. I was fortunate to have their picture taken on one of the first days of operation. (Photo taken on flight CX 710, SIN-HKG, B777-367)

I leave you all to judge the new unifom. Thank you Cathay Pacific for the wonderful flight and I wish I am flying with them soon again!

Feedback and questions are always welcome

Hi Sam,

excellent report with high-quality pictures, as usual! Good to see you posting a report again. CX's new J Class product looks great. I'd love to compare it to LX's new J Class which I recently tested. Have you tried that one yet?

Very innovative!

What can you say about shoulder space? That's one of the few weak points on LX.

Excellent trip report, Sam. Thank you for being the first here to post a trip report on CX's new J class. I've been looking forward to an evaluation of CX's new J class. I've never tried it, but aesthetically, it looks like a generation ahead of the old herringbone design.

Thank you once again. A very enjoyable read

Hi Sam, that was a fantastic TR. I have only flown CX in JCL several times and have found their service superior. The new cabin looks really nice. The photos on landing in SYD was amazing! My favourite city in the world! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Sam for this nice TR.

Cathay has always that touch of Asian class... I love the new J-class. Especially the orchids and the nice paintings on the wall !!!

I do think they now have the right balance in J in terms of hardware/software product.

amazing report mate.

have wanted to try out their new business class since I saw the first pictures, and you just made me want to try it even more!

its been a year since I last flew Cathay and I miss their service greatly.

when comparing business class to their first class what is your opinion? - I wasn't too excited with the previous J seat and after flying it once last year, I found their First to be worth the difference and flew it the rest of the 11 Cathay flights I had. (but of course they're not bringing in as many new aircraft's with F)

Cheers,
Kyle

Great Report!

You're making me wish I hadn't switched from One World to SkyTeam!

The seats look fantastic and superb, I am very impressed. SYD is a destination high on my list of travels I would love to see in the near future if at all possible.

Great photos too, and I enjoyed it all!

Beautiful report, Sam!

This is true. Cathay Pacific are just a top quality airline, who keep on doing their thing with class. There are no gimmicks and so on - and they do it extremely well. Humble is a very good word to describe Cathay Pacific.

They are one of my favourite airlines, mainly because when I have flown them in Business Class the service has been nothing short of perfect - on every flight!

Again, thanks for the report - loving the new Business Class - though I did like the old one too!
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

Very nice looking cabin. I want to try CX at somepoint soon ... I'm always impressed with their high level of attention to detail.

The A330 looked amazing in that bright sunshine at SYD!

Thank you Sam for sharing with us such a special trip report! I have been curious about the new Business product and the seats look amazing. Your pictures really illustrate the seats well.

The only disappointment is the food/catering - there have been some more cutbacks, but then it is a midnight flight, meals are not that important.

Thanks again and look forward to you next report!

Hi Sam !

Fantastic report with fantastic pictures as usual ! CX looks very good with amazing serivce and great food!

One thing that looks really weird in the pictures are the screens in the middle section; it looks like they are at a 75 degree angle from the viewer so it looks like it must be almost impossible to view the screen ? Perhaps the screens be turned to face the viewer better ?

Haha good pick up. It travel with me sometimes but it is weird no body actualy picked up it is Saudia.

Quoting alaskaqantas (Reply 7):
when comparing business class to their first class what is your opinion?

They're complete different classes in terms of service/seat/catering. The new CX Business class in hardware come very close to the OLD BA and UA First Class on 744. (if not better)

Quoting ClassicLover (Reply 10):
Again, thanks for the report - loving the new Business Class - though I did like the old one too!

I am actually quite OK with the previous one even my shoulder are quite wide. Although I heard so many complaints but Cathay seems listened in from their frequent flyer complaints.

Quoting Carfield (Reply 12):

Yes, there have been some( or less visually presented) cutbacks. My Apetitizer was not served separately but together with my choice of main course. It gives you the impression of famous Japanese one tray meal service! I am not sure if all the midnight long haul dep are having the same service like my flight to SYD. It seems the cut back are also trying to reduce the time to serve meals in red eye hours.

However, the food on CX out of HKG are good, consistent, somewhat predictable but I really like eating it after a few months in the Middle East without authentic Cantonese food.

Quoting The777Man (Reply 13):

Hi Lars, yes you need to pull the screen out and can turn into straight viewing angle.

Btw, Etihad have cutback Amenity kit in Business Class long haul. It has been reduced to select your needed item from a tray brought around by a cabin crew. The CX seat is miles better than EY 1-2-1 sort of staggered seating. I also read your EY Milan-Tokyo flight with great interest. I think the old First Class EY product, while innovative but it is a failure with filmsy cushion and your leg keep hitting the table while turning around during sleep. Please drop me a message when you past UAE (dxb/auh)

Those new business class seats look amazing. This is the type of product I expect to see from CX. Their old herringbone style business class seats where a disappointment. This product looks so much nicer and gives the cabin a more open feel.

Thanks for the pictures.

As you mentioned the catering didn't look to be what I would have expected, but I guess consistency is sometimes better than extravagance. And as long as it tastes good and fills you up then its a non issue.

Cheers for the report

Wonderful trip report and really great business class from CX.
Wish MH could install those seats on their coming A380 and A330 for long haul routes.

Apparently their Y seats are so bad they are being forced to replace them.

The May 2011 delivered A330-300 still feature the fixed shell Economy Class seat. I haven't try them so can't comment much. (and also been avoiding knowing it may be a nightmare due to my large body size)

Hey, nice report. Glad you had a positve CX expercience. Nice that you where able to board early as well.

This is a good point. I think only handful of passengers want to dine at midnight so a quick one tray service makes good sense. For me, the Sea Bass fillet was ONE OF THE BEST fish I've tasted onboard for many years of flying.

Hi Sam,

great job with the report with the usual high quality photos.

I flew on this same rout with CX A333 in the old configuration business class a few years back. It was a great flight back then, but the new seat looks even better. And the crew on CX has always been exceptional.

Thanks for sharing,

Blaž

Excellent report and pictures as always, Sam.

It's actually the Level 7 Business Class section of The Wing that is closed at the moment. Level 6 Business Class is still open, and the whole of The Pier is functioning as normal.

CX's new international J seats are really very impressive. On first glance they look a lot like BA's new F seat, but they are subtly different. As you would expect, BA's F seating is wider and longer than CX's J.

CX's catering presentation and quality is always very good, and it looks like your flight was no exception.

It looks like CX really has done one right with their new Business class seat. It sure looks fabulous!

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):
Note the two folded table design was a smart one, it allows you to slide around during meal service and leave your seat at leisure with table open. I can understand some may think the table is a little on the small side.

It sure looks small, but is it that much smaller than a regular business class tray table?

Thanks for the report and stellar pictures of CX's new business product, only overshadowed by your pictures of the excellent view while descending into SYD

Cheers

The table is actually two-folded so what shown in the picture is actually half of the full size.
Plus the side table that is even larger than a F4 size paper.

Hi Sam,

A wonderful report on CX's new Business Class! I'd say it looks way better than their herringbone ones. The sea bass definitely looks extra appetising!

The seats are exactly what I want when flying J - Facing the window for more privacy as compared to the herringbone ones facing the aisle which might make one feel "exposed".

I noticed you mentioned that this will be one of your last reports on a.net, will you be posting the rest on your website instead?

Regards,
Daniel

Thanks for a great report Sam. I have been wondering about the new product and you provided a great insight into it. The seat definitely looks like a major improvement over the old herringbone. Looking forward to more report from you.

Can you give more details on the usable storage space in the new versus the old seats?

One issue I have with the old J seats is that it's hard to find a place to keep lots of small stuff handy. E.g., the headphones CX provides aren't very good, so I bring my own, plus my own eye mask, ear plugs, a vitamin baggie per meal, magazine, eye glass case, hand wipes, iPod, phone, etc. In CX's old J seats, there is only a tiny cubby slot that can hold eye glasses, that's it. No room for a computer bag under the seat, either. BA J has a drawer that's handy. Even AA J has a cubby slot (not very big). Is there more storage/cubby space on CX new J?

Thanks for the terrifically detailed report!

WOW CX new J looks great!

Just a quick question though. I see that they issue passengers with an 'invitation' to the lounge instead of just presenting your boarding pass. Does that mean that you are limited to only using one of the lounges before your flight (eg The Pier). Or if you have a long transit are you able to check them all out (Pier/Cabin etc)?

There are great improvement over the previous Herringbone seat version in terms of storage place. In fact, there are plenty of room to put your things aside. Storage room are on the side to your seat, you can see the side storage in this picture. (on the side table next to window)

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/TripReportCX/DSC_1035.jpg

Just came out of a older A330 (Herringbone version J class) flight from HKG to KUL. I found the old version have more padding, softer cushion and I sleep very well on it. Definitely storage room is limited. I missed out an opportunity to fly the new B77W J class due to bad weather and thunderstorm activity last night.

Yes you can use multiple lounges from my experience. Last night the Wing was overflowing, so I moved to the Cabin. After surrender your lounge invitation at the first lounge. When you go to the 2nd lounge, they may stamp on your boarding pass, but you're definitely invited to use all of the lounges.

Thanks!

In the picture, it looks like the storage space is a tray at the base of the triangular red angled thing underneath the side table, is that correct?

Interesting that the padding is softer on the old -- thanks for the detailed info.

Found this video from Cathay that shows the storage spaces, plus how the seat extension works to provide extra space for side-sleepers:
