MAN-MCO-MAN VS A333 (Pics)

Sun Aug 07, 2011 5:41 pm

Departure: Manchester International
Arrival: Orlando International
Date: 29th July 2011
Time: 11:00
Arrival: 14:50
Flight Time: 8 hours around
Seat: 65D
A/C: G-VSXY Beauty Queen

It was soon time for my journey to Orlando, we had stayed in the Radisson Blu hotel with a room overlooking the airport giving excellent views.

I had previously checked in online to try and get a row of 3 seats row 65 for us. This worked out well and we got the seats. I would choose them again but for everyones reference the seats are an inch narrower than others on the plane the legroom is regulation 31" exactly, but they do have full recline which is nice.

The flight was on time and there were 317 onboard given this is peak season, there is also the later flight which was the B747 but i was very keen to try the new A330, and also didnt like the idea of the now "tatty" 747's before refurbishment.

The first thing to notice is the mood lighting, which you would imagine would change or do something interesting but it seems to have only one setting which is on/off, and of course it was on for the entire flight.

Secondly the overly cold air conditioning, one of our party had 2 blankets on, i had one and was still very very cold, i would estimate temperature around 18c, walking down the a/c later on would reveal everyone wearing blankets, covering arms, shoulders and every exposed body part.

As is customary "stupidly" for a UK flight the IFE was not active for nearly 2 hours after take off, but once it was activated it was fantastic and hopefully a precedent for the 747 refurbishment.

There seemed to be no problems with the system, no lags and it was very efficient at loading different items, sky maps sky news, games etc.

Whilst this was activated the first and of course last official bar service passed through the cabin with pretzels.
No cider unfortunately so Pepsi it was.

This was followed by an excellent meal service which is the best i have tasted in years, i choose sausage and mash but all options were available.

This was followed by me watching a film and enjoying the flight. Arrival was an estimated 40 minutes early which hopefully should bring our arrival before the LGW VS and LGW BA flight, which no doubt would mean a speedy us immigration.

I did get extra drinks from the galley at the rear which was no problem, the toilet location at row 65 also presented no problem.

Cruising altitude over the atlantic was 35000ft climbing to 40000ft when out of the NAT track.

45 minutes before landing a extremely tasty sandwich was served but because the drink service followed slowly behind it was 25 mins to landing before i got a drink and had to rush this, perhaps they should start the service earlier, and we also missed out on the customary sweets.

Landing ahead of the LGW flights we breezed through immigration and were on our way.

Departure: Orlando International
Arrival: Manchester International
Date: 5th August 2011
Time: 19:00
Arrival: 8:15
Flight Time: 8 hours around
Seat: 61D
A/C: G-VSXY Beauty Queen

And so it was time to return unfortunately. We arrived at MCO at 16:00 and checked in straight away with no que, having checked in online and chosen the first set of three seats are row 61. I was hoping for G-VKSS but due to tech problems that hadn't flown the previous day.

These seats were so much better, legroom was closer to 35" and were full width, and also i had extra space because of the missing fourth seat, recline though was more difficult because of seats behind.

Once again take off on time flight time of around 7 hours 55,
Due to the 19:00 departure time there was no bar service and they went straight to dinner, which was salmon (not my favourite), but not all choices were available, luckily one of our party managed to get a premium meal which was very nice.

IFE switched on a little earlier this time, again everything worked with no lag, apart from a slight headphone issue, someone had pressed the adapter in so my headphone adapter wouldn't fit so had to listen with one ear.

I didn't sleep for the entire flight due to being very uncomfortable but that was more my back problem than the seat which was very comfy. The flight passed very quickly with me watching several tv programmes and films. Again the mood lighting is either on/off and they also didn't dim the no smoking lights as normal which was annoying.

Atitude up the east coast was 35000ft then the cruise over the atlantic was 39000ft, we started our very bumpy decent 35 minutes before landing on 23R at MAN.

Unfortunately T2 was very busy and we had to park remotely and get coaches which took an extra 20 minutes.

Overall i am very impressed with Virgin Atlantic and would reccommend them to anyone.

I'm sorry, but I did not get a real feel of the trip from your report. I guess I was looking for pics of the meals, and more pics of the cabin and FAs if possible. Even photos of the MAN and MCO terminals and gate areas would have added more depth to your TR. Not trying to be mean-spirited, just offering constructive criticism.

2 HOURS!!!! Wow, that's not good at all

Really? 1900 and no bar service. That does not sound like a good offering at all. Its still quiet early in the evening. How was the drink run done with the meal may I ask?

I do agree it was a basic trip report, but they are sometimes refreshing and give you a brief overview of the service offering someone like destinations has experienced. I would be careful taking pics of FAs and posting them online though.

Thanks for a good light read.

Nice report about VS' new A330.

That's not bad IMO, the lighting looks nice.

I have noticed that once on Etihad, but it got better during the flight. Didn't you tell the FAs about it?

That's very long. It wasn't available until 30 minutes after takeoff on a A346 flight to DXB in March and I already thought that would be long.

I can only agree. I was quite impressed by the A346 interior and the catering. Report to follow soon.

Hi

Nice trip report. It's an enjoyable read, looks like VS improved its comfort comparing to the older 747s

Greetings

I enjoyed your trip report and I, too, have mixed feelings about the mood lighting. I take Virgin America from FLL to SFO on occasion, and I feel like I'm in a cocktail lounge. After a couple of hours I can't wait to get outside!

It seems that your experience indicates that Virgin Atlantic is getting better after a period of resting on their laurels.

Thanks for the comments. I dont think i would go around taking pictures of flight attendants, unfortunately the a/c was parked at a gate where it couldn't be photographed either which was a shame.
