|From Trip MIA|
Usually, my family and I go together on a trip in the german summer holidays. So planning started in april with a nice discussion round, which destination it will be.
After some destionations around the mediterranean ( PMI MAH etc.), which have been terribly expensive with over 300€ for a return trip on direct flights, we deciced to fly to the United States.
Luckily I found a acceptable fare on LX with the routing LUX – ZRH – MIA return, so I booked these flights for my family.
To complete the trip preparation we booked the Best Western Ft Lauderdale, which has direct access to the beach, and a rental car, because you can't do Miami and suroundings on public transport.
Day of travel:
|From Trip MIA|
thanks to gcmap.com
With a late morning departure time of 10.35 AM, we left home at about half past seven and after an hours drive we arrived at Luxemburg Findel airport.
Nice baloons on the way to the airport
As usual the Terminal was again deserted:
I never understood why they constructed the new airport so large, but well for the passengers comfort it is just perfect. Check-in was a breeze, as there were no queues at all at the two open LX counters and I already preselected the seats during OLCI.
After that, we went for a breakfast to the selfservice restaurant on the first floor, which gives you excellent views of the apron.
Security was also done in a rush, as I normally prepare my things in a way that, I am through in a minute.
Airside, there is not that much to do so I had a quick look around the shops and then just sit down in the waiting area and relaxed.
Some shots of the apron:
Soon enough the plane landed and taxied the short way to the gate.
After about 20 minutes, boarding started and I made my way down the jetway to the Avro.
Nice to have the glass ones in LUX, always give you a good view on the bird.
LUX – ZRH
Boarding was soon finished and we made the short way to the runway for take-off, during which, the safety presentation was done manually.
The take-off itself was a very powerful one as usual on the RJ100.
Shortly after take-off I noticed the tail of the B747-8F next to the Cargolux facilities, bugger I couldnt get a picture of it, but well.
The service started soon, a drinkrun and a piece of swiss chocolate in this case. I went for coffee and orange juice, a good combo to start the day.
Safety Card and inflight mag:
Legroom is fine for this short flight:
The flight passed quickly and too soon, the first officer announced that the decent already started and that we will land in about 10minutes.
The rural landscape on approach to ZRH is really nice, and on short final there are nice ads cut into the fields.
Landing is after 38 in the air.
Taxi to the terminal:
As expected we arrived at the regional stands, meaning also a busride back to the terminal.
Unfortunately the busses here are covered in advertisements so the view wasnt perfect at all.
After some 3 mins ride we arrived at the main terminal building.
As our connection time was less than 90mins, we hurried up and fastly arrived at the transit train, which brought us to the international satelite, where all the LX longhaul starts from.
Inside the train are speakers, which keep playing animal noises. Something not usual, but nice.
While arriving at the satelite, something really nice happened.
The queues were quite long at the security check-point, so the agent who checked our boarding passes leaded us to the crew screening point, where was hardly no traffic at all. Thumbs up for that.
There we were through in a couple of minutes and soon after we settled down near our gate, the boarding started.
Down the nice glass jetways into the aircraft: I wonder why they use only one of the two jetways, even the load in all classes was very good.
ZRH – MIA
As expected earlier, the load in Economy was 100% with most of the passengers travelling to MIA for holidays.
The whole boarding process took about 30mins.
Soon after the doors were closed and the safety announcement was shown on the PTV, while the aircraft was pushed back.
During the taxi, there were many interesting views of the activity on the apron of ZRH.
We had to wait for about 10mins to takeoff, because nearly all longhaul flights of Swiss depart at the same time in the early afternoon, so there is always a „rush hour“ around that time in ZRH.
The takeoff run was quite long as our A330-300 was nearly at max payload for the trip over the pond to Miami.
Directly after the takeoff, all planes do a sharp left turn to keep the noise level above the Zurich down, but this also gives you a nice view of the city and the airport:
After about half an hour into the flight, the first drink run started with also some snacks distributed.
Some 40mins later the lunch was served, unlike on LH, LX didnt offer any menu, the F/A just told what was on offer: Pasta or chicken.
Coast of Portugal, now atlantic crossing:
After that I started exloring the new IFE. The selection of movies and TV shows was not bad, but ICE and Krisworld are still miles ahead. But the most important channel for me was the airshow anyway, which is the latest generation one on LX.
Control inside the armrest, quite fancy:
I love that winglet:
The next hours I watched some movies and listened to my iPod.
Drink runs were performed a lot of times and about 6 hours into the flight, some delicious Mövenpick icecream was given to the passengers.
About one hour before landing in MIA, the second food service started, this time a pizza slice, which was rolled and some drinks.
Because of a thunderstorm, MIA was closed for about 45mins, so we circled around the bahamas which gave me some nice views.
Finally we landed after more than 10 hours in the air, quite a stretch for A333.

Here are some pictures of the holiday:

Hard Rock Cafe Miami:
After returning the rental car to the specially designed return centre, a shuttle bus brought us quickly to the international terminal. We arrived there about two hours before our flight and at the LX check-in counters, there was already a long queue of people, most of them being holidaymakers, who still think they have to be there at the exact beginning of check-in time.
I already checked in online for my family, but we still had to get the boarding passes and drop of our baggage.
After that done, we proceed to security as there was not much to do landside.
Security was a breeze, because the staff there was really nice.
I also experienced the Bodyscanner, which I personally dont mind at all.
Airside I firstly had some lunch and then walked around the shops to get rid of my last few USD.
About 40mins before boarding started, I sat down and just relaxed.
The LH A380 flight to FRA was delayed by more than 5 hours and even departed after our ride to ZRH.
The boarding was announced bang on time and as I arrived at the gate there was a huge queue, so I just settled down again and waited for some time as i didnt have much handluggage to store away.
MIA – ZRH
I was greeted by some middle aged female F/A at the door and made my way to my seat.
Boarding took quite long on this, again totally full flight and when everybody was seated, the maitre de cabine welcomed all passengers in english, french and german on board.
Shortly afterwards, the safety presentation was shown and we taxied to the runway.
A380 next to us, the name Zürich is a nice coincidence isnt it?
After a long take off run we made our way into the sky back to Europe.
After some 20mins in the air, drinks were again given to the passengers with a little snack.
The dinner service started about 50mins later and consisted again of chicken or pasta.
As this was a red-eye flight, I took a nap after the meal, but I cant sleep well on airplanes so after about 2-3 hours of halfsleep, I watched some movies.
There was also a plane next to ours for about 30mins which was nice to watch.
This time we took a northern route instead of the more south one on the outbound leg.
The crew performed several drink runs on this flight too, which I appreciated.
The breakfast service started about 70mins before landing, with some nice french landscap to fly by.
Overflying CDG :
Way too soon the decent started and we landed in ZRH.
US 762 next to us:
Transit in ZRH :
As we had some 6 hour layover, we went and did the airport tour with a bus, which was amazing, because in ZRH you are allowed to step off the bus and take pictures of planes right next to the runway. After that I went to the viewing terrace and stayed there for a few hours.

The flight back to LUX was just a normal shorthaul flight and I was too tired to take many pictures.
LX is a nice carrier and offers a decent product in longhaul Y, but also I could not see much difference to LH, even they are often called the better LH .
The A333s are in a excellent condition and the legroom is fine for a longhaul flight.
I also liked the RJ100 flights, which are perfect for some short intra-european sectors.
Transit in ZRH was a breeze and I would definately choose LX again in the future.
A huge thank you for my brother, who did many pictures for this report.
Thank you a lot for reading.
Comments and questions are highly appreciated.
Hi! Nice trip report. Good pictures and text.
Best regards mnfrean - Fredrik
An excellent trip report, bravo! I guess the "test" of a quality trip report is if it enables the reader to feel like he's experiencing the trip alongside you and this one more than exceeded that test!
I noticed the safety card seat pocket said it was an A330.
Slightly scary, given the A330-300's range! Though of course I'm sure if the thunderstorms raged much longer the aircraft would have been diverted to another airport.
United: please start SYD-IAH!
that was a very enjoyable trip report. Was the catering tasty>? Seems like a few of the European carriers are raising their game to keep up with the Gulfies.
Nice to see LUX airport too, always been a bit curious!
Breaking down the stereotypes - one by one
Nice trip report an a very enjoyable read. very nice to compare against my MUC-MIA-MUC run last December. For comparison, reed my BRU-MUC-MIA report on Lufthansa here Lufthansa, There Is No Better Way To Fly! (by MSS658 Jul 5 2011 in Trip Reports) . Catering looks IMO better on LH than LX, the rest almost mirrors my flight on Lufhansa.
Thanks for dedicating me to the UA 767 to me as well .
Next trip report: Well worn A330s and Hassle free MUC transfer
great report with many nice pictures, I had been waiting for this one! Swiss' Y Class long-haul product looks very good.
I'm glad you also took off in that direction. And that's a nice shot of the A343.
That's looks quite good - just like the meal on the return flight - how did you like both of them?
Well, ICE in particular is a class of its own.
That's the way it should - you cannot touch it unintentionally. LH should have a look.
That's similar to what I got on a MAD-ZRH flight some years ago. It tasted very good.
Not a problem at all for the newer A330-300s versions.
I had a nice trip on that one some months ago, good to see it here!
Did they serve a big hot breakfast? How did you like it?
That's what I call provocation, Johannes...
Nothing's worse than flying the same reg twice!
Many thanks for the report on Swiss trans atlantic service.
Great products compared to the competitors on the same routes.
Given that miles earned is 100%, I'll pick Swiss for trans atlantic flights anytime.
Btw, I noticed you mentioned A340-300 on ZRH-MIA but it's actually an A330-300! Guess it's just a typo.
THAI 340-600 looks very neat at ZRH!!
Thank you once again!!
Let's just blame it on yields.
Very nice TR on SWISS, one of Europe's most interesting mainlines The pictures are great, and i especially enjoyed the spotting pictures (and i have not seen much on LUX before!).
Seems that LX has a decent Y class offering with a nice looking cabin, seats that seem comfortable, good service, and nice meals. Nice to see that they served Movenpic ice cream But of course, they have to if they are SWISS
Thanks a lot for sharing!
Fly Roni. Aviation Journeys. Photos. Videos.
Good to see your Miami TR up. Looks like two very decent transatlantic flights with LX - high quality service and what looks like a rather comfortable seat with good legroom. Well done, Swiss!
BTW what's up with your pictures? They all seem to be quite heavily compressed with lots of compression artifacts. Did you do that yourself or is it Picasa playing some shenanigans?
So does the lounge
What's that finger pointing at?
I thought they were very kitchy, but well... you can't argue on matters of taste.
Looks like a 330 to me!
Hmm, looks very good and quite substantial. Was it any good?
My, that's quite a southern routing indeed.
The shape of that thing is giving my some nasty ideas...
Well, I fail to see why somebody would mind. Then again I'm a Finn, and our nation is particularly famous for people (especially the male ones) who never give up an opportunity to frolic around naked... .
Again looks good. And again I must ask: how was it?
Did you identify it? Looks like a 767 to me, but the image is quite blurred.
Thanks pal, you didn't catch a BT 737 there?
The routing via Portugal looked interesting, it looks a bit unusual as I thought normally the flights even to MIA go over france and start their atlantic crossing from england or ireland?
Ever since you told us about your journey with LX to MIA, I have been waiting for this report to come. What a marvelous piece of writing! What a set of beautiful pictures! You are doing a great job to portray LX Y experience. LX should be grateful of you.
Good to know about the public transport. By the way, did you consult Trip Advisor regarding the hotel?
Beautiful sight with the blue sky as the background.
You know, sometimes we do not have to understand everything and just enjoy.
A hot spot! Which restaurant is it?
I wish everyone follows your example!
Why do I see three of them?
Whose pointing hand is that? I hope it had nothing to do with your on board photography.
I had similar experience in DXB. Did you check the door opening? Sometimes, you can find a gap big enough for your camera lens.
I loved it! It felt like being outside in the Swiss nature.
Kudos to the agent!
It could probably be cheaper to only use one.
I like the interior. Those Recaro seats look comfortable.
The same to me. Along with music channels.
Very nice to know that! I only heard bad stories about security in MIA.
Was it like the one at Schiphol? If so, can you imagine Shakira going through it?
The A380 was delayed specially for you!
Yummy, tortellini! LX pasta dish is usually very good!
Lovely! It makes it worth going landside in ZRH.
Please give him my best wishes.
Thanks a lot for the enjoyable read for rainy Sunday morning.
It's always enjoyable to read about LX and I am so glad you had good flights with them. The meal service on the MIA legs looks good, was it tasty too?
They actually accompany a short film which is projected onto the tunnel wall, showing Heidi. It is a bit kitsch, but it's what's many tourists associate with Switzerland & it's always amusing to watch the reactions when it's played. A mixture of groans & delight!
I didn't know there was an LH A380 named Zurich. That's quite surprising, considering they don't fly it here.
"Do nothing in haste, look well to each step and from the beginning think what may be the end" - Edward Whymper
Nice to see this report about your Miami trip. It looks like LX is offering good service also in economy class, sure an option for long haul flights. Meal service also looks impressive!
And what was that fare?
Well, now I've seen everything. Animal noises...
Good that they have some imagination!
Thanks for reminding me of this, a must for me the next time passing by ZRH.
Really enjoyable, thanks again.
Hi Johannes, great report with some nice pics!
That's quite overpriced, but then again isn't that always the case for flights ex LUX?
Some pretty nice action going on at LUX it seems.
I do that as well, i.e make sure to pack all the liquids and not to wear any metal objects. It goes like a breeze, wish more people would do so since it'd save quite a lot of time, and ease the workload for the security staff.
Seems pretty adequate for a flight of that duration. Did they have any other drinks on offer, and also did they hand out more of those chocolates prior to landing?
Hmm, interesting. Intended to create a rural feeling perhaps?
Ah, nice to see them serve Mövenpick. Did they offer 2nd's on the ice cream as well?
Thanks for sharing.
SAS Plus is Business Class made faux!
Thanks for sharing your trip to Miami with us. Some solid flights with Swiss, and their relatively new A333, really good.
I was wondering the same, does it ever get crowded then at LUX?
Too bad there is just a little amount of traffic. Or am I wrong?
Funny. Perhaps this is done to soothe the most nervous of travellers?
Nice overview pic!
No views down? Must've been nice to see.
In thrust we trust.
Thanks guys for all the comments so far
Thanks a lot.
Thanks, im happy that I passed your test
True was just a typo.
Would have been interesting to log a new airport.
Yes it was very tasty, but it could have been a bit larger.
Yeah, unfortunately not that covered.
Thanks, I finally found the time to finish it. The product indeed is very good.
Yeah way more interesting than the take-off over the countryside.
I liked both of them, but the quantity could be improved.
Unfortunately only a cold one with Croissants and a yogurt.
Youre very welcome.
Yes, this bird is stunning.
Thanks a lot Roni
Thanks, I always try to show as much as possible from LUX as it is not covered well.
Yes the overall service on LX is fine.
Yes, didnt expect that, but was very tasty.
Thank you very much.
Had some troubles uploading them, and on top internet didnt work properly.
Just my dad showing something to my mum.
Yes very tasty.
Again they did not disappoint me.
I think a 767 too but livery was impossible to find out.
Unfortunately there was not any of them.
Yes I found it unusual too.
Thank you, now I finally had the time to finish it.
Thank you very much for your kind words.
No, my dad booked it via travel agency.
I think it has no name, but it's the only one in LUX so you cannot miss it.
Haha, the F/A told me I can take as many as I want, and they are so delicious.
Just my dads, nothing to worry about.
You are very welcome
Thanks a lot, yes I enjoyed all four flights with them.
Yes very tasty indeed.
Thank you Yes I would go with LX again for longhaul travel
Yet another wonderful report! Been eagerly awaiting your report on LX!
Thanks for this dedication! It looks wonderful as ever.
Loved the pictures of LUX, hope to be there personally one day! The service on LX looks wonderful. I love LX's interior, looks very modern. I wouldn't mind flying them long haul one day in their A333s. Great that you got to fly on the RJ 100! The food definitely looks wonderful too. I love the idea of an inflight ice cream which is a great snack to accompany your movie.
Pictures in MIA looks great too, you have great photography skills! Making me want to visit there personally someday.
Looking forward to more reports in the future!
One day I will fly around the world!
Looks like the Mosel River between Wies (D) and Remich (LU)
LUX can be quite busy, but at the time when you were there, it is usually quiet. In the late-afternoon/early evening, it's way busier, and the Lounge is full too.
Still, this superb facility often remains under-used.
I sometimes have lunch there
I will also make my own LUX-contribution, once my TR BRU-IST-DXB and rtn is complete
Thx a lot for this TR. I fly LUX-ZRH (and beyond) once in while, to the extend that I feel almost home on that sector
Normal trolley drink offers.
I dont think so as Y was full.
Thank you very much.
Thanks a lot
Yep that is it, but now im using more the bridge in Grevenmacher and the A1 to get to the airport.
Thanks a lot
always nice to read a TR about Swiss long haul, great job! I
hope to get a chance to fly LX again soon in any class. Their Y product looks great as well. But I think that the current logo is better than the new version that they are introducing now.
And the photos from ZRH are great, the SQ A380 looks great.
well done. Good to see all that pictures from you´re trip to the states.
LX looks like ok, also the RJ´s, something what I like.
And that´s also something what I like, thank you.
Yeah my opinion too, they should keep it like that.
Yeah was a nice flight on the RJ, the 2-3 layout is a good way to travel
Nice TR of Swiss and visiting Miami, thanks for sharing.
This reminds me of my first trip to Miami and to US, I was flying with PanAm and we also had to circle around something like 1 hour because of the thunderstorms, I still remember the clouds over the Miami area.
I enjoyed your TR and Hard Rock Cafe Miami is a good reason to visit there again.
Thanks for the nice story with some nice pictures! Swiss looks like a nice carrier with good service! Love the pictures from LUX! It´s on my to-do list!:D
I enjoyed your t/r also. The one thing you didn't mention was what was served for breakfast before landing in Zurich. Was it a cold breakfast or a hot one? Thanks.
Interesting fact about PA.
the HRC is always a good reason to visit a city .
Thanks a lot. why dont you try the Cimber or SK service to LUX?
it was only a cold one, nothing special.
Great trip report!
Did you enjoy Miami in general? How was the weather compared to what you're use to?
