IZ Air & Onur Air: SOF-ADB-IST/SAW-SOF

Tue Aug 30, 2011 2:53 pm

BACKGROUND
Few months ago Pegasus announced new route ADB-SOF. Price was only 29.99 euro. Me and my friend decided to try them. Since there are only two direct flights per week we decided to fly back via Istanbul. There are six airlines operating between Izmir and Istanbul, we chose Onur air because sometimes you can see Airbus A300 on this route and price was really reasonable. Back flight to Sofia was again with Pegasus because of their unbeatable price.

Sofia airport so empty at this time:

CONCLUSION
Bought carriers offer free airport check-in and give you seat number.
Pegasus - really good price and on time performance. Pre-ordered meal was very tasty. As minus- not friendly cabin crew but it's really not a big deal especially with such prices.

Onur air - free candy and wet towels are nice touch. Their FA's are friendly and helpful. As minus - very tiny leg room. Maybe because of the fact that this was my first flight on Onur air they were my personal winner, but I would happily fly on both carriers again.

All tree Turkish airports are modern and clean even domestic terminal in ADB is very clean.

Comments are welcomed.

Hi there eco,

Nice photo story with some interesting airports and carriers. Great overview pic of SOF, an airport not so much featured here. I find the IZ Air cabin resembling a bit like the Ryanair cabin: green, yellow and ads on the overhead bins.

Hi Eco,

very nice report about these rare carriers, haven't read much about Izair and Onur Air yet.

Good to hear the pre-ordered meal tasted good. Was it fish?

Quoting eco (Thread starter):
n their in-flight magazine it says that Onur air are the largest private own airline in Turkey.

Interesting, I remember Pegasus saying the same some time ago. But Onur Air has added quite a few planes recently while Pegasus has replaced numerous older ones.

How on earth would they make money, only 20 people! Maybe they need to do some more advertising of this new route!

Thanks!

Hi, Eco!

Really good report on too airlines we don't read often about.
I must say, the Onur Air interior looks very nice, love the dark gray cloth on the seats.
The meal on Pegasus is good too, so it seems. No problem to fly these airlines myself, they have quite some flights to AMS from various Turkish airports, especially in summertime!

Thanks for a nice report on two little covered airlines ! Both carriers look good with nice meals. Good that you got to fly on two different aircraft when on Izair/Pegasus. It seems like a very nice day outing!

The service on Pegasus/IZ air is BOB - you can pre-order on their website or buy it on board

Chicken menu.

This was their second flight on that route. One hour flight is not so expensive especially when it is operated from your hub. Wizz air had started selling tickets on that route few years ago but canceled it before even start flying. Pegasus started daily flights SAW-SOF one year ago selling tickets to many cities inside Turkey, Georgia, Lebanon and other destinations so maybe a lot of their passengers ADB was final destination.
You are absolutely right that Pegasus needs more advertising after all there are 9 buses daily between Sofia - Istanbul. Even Emirates commercials in Sofia says "Fly with us from Istanbul". Also Pegasus have many advantages that most people don't know about like free check-in baggage and cheap rates for excess baggage, free parking at SAW.... Pegasus flights are the only cheap connection in the Balkan region from Sofia. Thickets to ATH and specially OTP very expensive. Belgrad, Zagreb, Skopie, Tirana and others Balkan capitals have no direct flights for years. That's way I like Pegasus so much and wish them and their new general sales agent in Sofia all the best.

Hi Eco,

A very interesting report - good to see two carriers that AFAIK have not been reported on before.

I really like that IZAir livery - I was hooked ever since the first time I saw one of their planes at TXL. Do they always operate the same routes for Pegasus or does it vary? Just thinking of any options to catch them in the near future?

The load factors on your flights didn't sound too good, hopefully they will get better and they don't withdraw the service to SOF. I flew Pegasus last year, SAW-STN with their 738, was a very nice flight even though it was completely packed and the legroom was quite horrible.

Very good to see Onur Air as well - I was looking at doing a trip Turkey this year to fly with them but ended up booking something else, and no time left this year for that option so maybe next year...

Hi Eco,
thanks for this interesting trip report.

I've many times been looking at domestic flights from IST to either AYT or ADB. Alright, I had heard of all these airlines before, but very little did I know about them. So thank you!

AtlasJet was of particular interest for me, both because I'm planning to fly on them domestic, but also because they fly charter flights AYT-HEL-AYT which you can book from a tour operator starting at 180 EUR return, one of my friends are leaving on that route in a couple of weeks.

Also, I've always wondered about the difference between Pegasus and Izair, apparently PC owns both and Izair flights are operated by them, and it also happens that Pegasus flights are operated by aircraft in Izair livery?

Quoting eco (Thread starter):

Now let me see. We've got Turkish Airlines, Atlasjet, Pegasus, Izair, Sun Express, which one did I forget?

Quoting eco (Thread starter):

Wow, I didn't know they are still operating A300s. Then it is definitely an advantage to look up flights on Atlasjet, as rare as the A300 is today.

Looks alright, how much did the preordered meal cost you?

Quoting eco (Thread starter):

I'm sorry to see the load factors were so low. You didn't happen to see if the arriving flight ADB-SOF was that empty?

Thanks for sharing!

Differences that I found between Pegasus and IZair are:
1. Livery
2. Izair planes are equipped with blue leather seats and Pegasus planes are with black leather seats.
Thats all that I noticed.

HI Eco, thanks for posting this report. I flew from SOF-SAW in March and the load was no more then 20% so I guess Pegasus is struggling on the route. Its a shame that you didn't get the Onur Air A300. Izmir Airport and Sabiha Gokcen look great.

Hi eco

Nice report. Izair is quite something rare to catch. Sorry for my late comment...

Quoting eco (Thread starter):
Pegasus announced new route ADB-SOF. Price was only 29.99 euro

That's an interesting new route. Is it for Bulgarians going on holiday in Turkey or is it more targeted at migrant workers? Nice price but the load seems a bit low to make this route a success.

I'd pick Nalchik, Chisinau or Trabzon!

It was target more to so call ethnic traffic. I am saying was because Pegasus are closing their flights to Sofia, not only from Izmir but from Istanbul too.   Also Cimber and SWISS are closing their routes to Sofia   It really bad news.

Hey A. !

Very good TR and good pics too !! You took the pics with your mobile phone ?

It seems Pegasus is an airline worth of trying and now when it is getting more
cold up north, it would be nice to visit some warmer places like Istanbul.

Thanks for the TR, it went to my bookmarks.
