Speed Dining With BMI

Wed Oct 26, 2011 7:32 pm

Some of you may know the concept of speed dating, which is a dating system aimed at having a person meeting as many people as possible in the course of one event. Well, I recently took a trip with BMI from Heathrow to Basel and by the time we landed back in Basel I had decided to coin a new term: speed dining. But more of that later on.

This trip report covers a journey I took from Basel to Heathrow and back for some heavy duty shopping. The outbound flight was in the evening, so there wasn't really much to photograph. Even so, I will post some of the pictures from the lounge in Basel because it just look so nice and cosy at night time.

When I arrived at the lounge, I saw this standing outside. Initially I thought it was my aircraft, but then I realised the aircraft was in complete darkness and looked like it had been standing there for quite some time. And indeed, as it turned out this really was not my aircraft.

So here are the images of the lounge. It is such a pity there's so little traffic in Basel. Such a lounge deserves to be at a major airport like Zurich, not in Basel.

And now on to the actual report:

Airline: BMI
Date: 23 October 2011
From: Heathrow Terminal 1
To: Basel
Aircraft: A319
Seat: 6D, aisle
Cabin: Business Class, D

After a lovely day in London it was time to head back to Heathrow, heavy laden with shopping. I caught the Bakerloo Tube line from Oxford Circus to Paddington Station. I just love the London Underground, even if it is slowly falling apart.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010912.jpg

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010913.jpg

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010915.jpg

In Paddington I did some more last minute shopping at Mark's before catching the Heathrow Express to T1. This here is not the Heathrow Express but I thought it looked rather funky. I took this while I waited for my train to arrive.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010917.jpg

And here's my train pulling into the station.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010919.jpg

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010920.jpg

From the railway station in Heathrow Central I struggled to cart my heavy carry-on to the Check-in area for BMI in T1. BMI seem to have a bit of an issue crediting miles on the code share flight with SWISS, so I wanted a real boarding pass, rather than doing mobile check-in.

BMI has a dedicated check-in area for its premium customers. The facility is also available for Lufthansa and Austrian.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010923.jpg

Security was surprisingly easy and fast. And then from there to the lovely BMI lounge with its excellent views.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010943.jpg

While I sat in the lounge I saw this bugger do quite a rough landing, it was more of an impact with the runway than a landing actually. As the aircraft turned off the runway it had thick white smoke coming out of the left landing gear. Nobody seemed really bothered by this.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010946.jpg

And now comes the actual report: the flight.

RE: Speed Dining With BMI

Wed Oct 26, 2011 7:45 pm

Boarding was about 20 minutes late and there seemed to be quite a bit of confusion going on. I was among the last to get on the plane and they were still loading the catering then.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010947.jpg

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010948.jpg

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010950.jpg

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010951.jpg

Surprisingly, given that it was a Sunday evening, there were about 28 passengers in Business Class.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010953.jpg

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010954.jpg

We took off right behind this one.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010955.jpg

Lovely views climbing out of London.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010956.jpg

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010957.jpg

And this is now where the speed dining comes into it. The captain announced a flight time of 1 hour and 10 minutes. After that the purser came on and announced that there would be a hot meal in Business Class. Already at that point I thought this was rather ambitious, especially with only one person working the entire Business Class section. Much to my surprise the purser first came round taking drink orders. He also made a point of asking all passengers with status what they would like to eat. Which I thought was very professional. there was a choice of beef or pasta. I chose the beef. The purser then disappeared in the galley for quite while. When he reappeared he had two glasses on a tray with drinks for the first row. By this time I was already pretty sure this would never work.

Here's the meal.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/P1010958.jpg

At some point he realised this was going nowhere and started serving the meals instead of the drinks. In any case, to cut a long story short, at some point the captain announced our descent and that we would be on the ground in Basel within 20 minutes. About two minutes after that I received my meal. I barely managed to finish the hot meal. I got started on the dessert but before I could finish it the flight attendant arrived and whisked away my tray. I was just about to give her a mouthful when I heard the landing gear coming out. That's when I figured that perhaps it was a better idea not to...

In summary, BMI is a great airline and I like their brand. their aircraft are spotlessly clean and have a nice interior design. The food concept is of course very good and impressive compared to what other carriers serve in Europe on sectors of a similar length. But even so, if you then haven't got enough time to eat the damn meal, then what's the point?

Comments are of course, as ever, welcome.

Interesting to see how BD attempted their C class service. I think the purser might have been a bit more used to long segments to the Middle East, not short hops to BSL. Looks like they need to refine their service procedures. Looks like they were trying though! The meal looks very nice.

Major fail on the part of the supervisor. There are clearly laid down service flows for all flights. With a high C load, the meal trays should have been loaded with the hot meals, a selection of drinks placed on top of the cart with a basket of warm bread, and meals and drinks should have been offered together. Tea and then coffee should have been served and trays cleared in. Easily achievable in the time available (I've done it many times). It really frustrates me when crew make up their own service, it rarely works and ends up irritating passengers. We have a service manual for a reason, I wish everyone used it. grrrrrrr!

Hi Gabriel

It really tasted nice and the presentation was good. But you just can't enjoy a meal if you have to demolish it in such a short time.

To give them credit, the whole crew was really friendly. They worked very hard and as we deplaned they apologised profusely for the delay/hurry with the meal. But the purser just underestimated the time or overestimated his abilities.

The crew were all very young. I think perhaps the purser lacked the experience to effectively switch from a leisurely, peronalised service mode to an efficient but friendly process.

That sure is an impressive lounge. All that seems lacking is a stage and a live band.

So I guess that cheese and biscuits were not served.

I am surprsied that a hot meal is served on such a short flight as many other airlines limit offerings to a sandwich or similar. Nice to see that bmi do offer something a bit more substantial, but bwaflyer has a point about procedures.

Thanks for sharing,

Thanks for the nice report.

BMI business product looks quite nice, especially for such a short sector. I flew Swiss C from GVA to LCY recently and it was equally a bit of a rush. But apart from that I wasn’t too impressed with their C product. Maybe I actually should redeem some of all those BMI miles on BMI itself.

The lounge in Basel looks really nice too, quite different I must say. Again I found the lounge in GVA quite disappointing and the food was appalling.

Hi!

Thanks for posting this tripreport, as I'm flying bmi for the first time in January. Will be great fun.
I agree with you, those cabins do look nice, atleast based on all the pictures I've seen.

Hi William,

Very nice report. You are a credit to BSL lounge by showing her glory during the evening. I agree with you that the lounge deserves better.

You, the purser and other 27 Business Class passengers deserved better too. I cannot understand the single crew assignment for such premium load. The hot meal was great, but should BD not consider a second and even a third crew member in Business Class? Did you send any comment about the flight to BD?

Thanks for sharing your insight review of speed dining.

Best wishes,
Suryo

The BSL lounge is really great. Built by CrossAir, of course in the days of the EuroHub at BSL. This, of course, died a death with the birth of SWISS. Although SWISS seems to have been slowly building up their offerings out of BSL in recent times again.

VASP in Brazil used to serve hot meals on 1 hour flights in Y in the 1970s and that was impressive.

And in the 1950s my aunt tells me you also got a hot meal on AF from London to Paris on a 1 hour flight.

I think you have a point there. It is all rather flashy, just like the CEO of Crossair, SWISS' predecessor, who commissioned the lounge. But it is nice.

Quoting Quokka (Reply 5):
So I guess that cheese and biscuits were not served.

As you mention it, there was a bread basket with crackers on it, but that kind of fell by the wayside once they realised time was against them.

I've done a bit of research and by the looks of it, BA and LX now both also serve a hot breakfast on the LHR route. No idea though if this is perhaps a result of BMI's ambitious inflight catering concept though.

Well, yes and no. More recently it seems to me that they're not really building up new routes from Basel but just shuffling them around. For every new route they close another one. But they certainly give Easyjet a good run for their money.

Good report with nice pictures of the BSL lounge again.

Hey, isn't that just typical BD experience? Offer something nice and then screw it up with some crazy way of working things so the customer actually ends up feeling let down. Comical. The meal looks so nice too.

Thanks for the write up.

Cheers, Lee.

The BSL lounge looks very nice indeed, very stylish. Maybe next time consider to have your meal in the lounge and to enjoy an extra glass of champers on the plane, not having to speed dine your way through the flight?

What a disappointment – to be presented with such a hot meal to have it whisked away again so abruptly. To be clearing the trays away when you hear the landing gear – talk about cutting it fine!

Quoting knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
But even so, if you then haven't got enough time to eat the damn meal, then what's the point?

Such a shame. As you say, it’s nice that BMI offer such an extensive service on this route, but it needs to be practical too. Do you know what the load was in Y ? Presumably the other cabin crew members had their work cut out there. I think it would be worth passing your comments on to BMI and seeing what they say.

Happy flying

Funny you should say that. The more I fly with them, the more inconsistencies I'm finding. In the last three weeks I've done three round trip with BMI to London and back and basically no two of the flights were the same or even comparable, except for the friendliness of the crew perhaps.

Not all all, the honour of inventing speed dining goes entirely to BMI. And I can assure you I was equally intrigued to see what would happen during the flight...

Not quite. They have these glass walls for privacy and a bit of quiet. The curtain is so your neighbour can't watch you snoring.

Many thanks for the report. Cool you had a nice day shopping in London and the trip report on BMI was nice too. I have flown BMI from London Heathrow to Manchester a couple of times I think and I found their prices good and the planes were good too with a nice interior. This was when they were just getting taken over by Lufthansa. One thing I don't understand is why airlines which are owned by Lufthansa like Swiss and BMI have competitive prices but Lufthansa themselves always seem to be so expensive. Anyway great meal, sorry you had to rush it a little.

Many thanks.

Hi milesaddict
Your name reminds me to give a word of caution to anyone wanting to take this flight: for some reasons collecting miles on the BSL-LHR does not seem to work automatically. Apparently it does not even seem to make much of a difference if you fly under the BD flight number or the LX code-share. This means you have to wait for ten working days to elapse before sending the original boarding pass to Miles and More. So anyone who urgently needs the miles: pick another flight!

My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it.

Yep, there nothing like retail therapy!

Good question, I guess it's a question of getting the marketing mix right. As it is, customers can get cheap fares with the Lufthansa group on LX and BD, but if you want to travel on the much more extensive network of Lufthansa you have to pay. Just an idea.

Hey William, nice report!

Quoting knightsofmalta (Reply 1):
Surprisingly, given that it was a Sunday evening, there were about 28 passengers in Business Class.

Now that's a healthy load, flight must've been a money maker. Nice to see the old LH seats also
Quoting knightsofmalta (Reply 1):
He also made a point of asking all passengers with status what they would like to eat.

Interesting, did this apply to all people with *G status or only BD Gold (and Silver)?

When he reappeared he had two glasses on a tray with drinks for the first row.

Must say that meal looks very generous. Suppose no time to serve coffee either, hehe.

Quoting knightsofmalta (Reply 1):
But even so, if you then haven't got enough time to eat the damn meal, then what's the point?

Well, I guess BD should take after LX who serve some pretty impressive looking cold meal trays on their 1hr flights. They are of course the masters of speed dining

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you.

Actually I wouldn't be so sure. The more I think of it the stranger the whole experience becomes. I'm wondering if perhaps the previous or the later flight was cancelled, causing that flight to be full.

Well I'm a Senator with LH, not BD. But again, it may well be that he just asked all the passengers that had originally booked Business Class, which would mean that everybody else he didn't ask might have been upgraded from Y.

Oh very funny! And that something like that should happen to me when I have a sweet tooth!

Nah, I've really gone off SWISS. Sure, BMI was far from perfect but for sure, so is SWISS if you travel with them a lot.

Thanks for posting Jonas.

Cheers,
William
