Emirates ZRH-DXB On A 777-300ER

Sun Jan 01, 2012 8:12 pm

Welcome to 2012, A.netters!

First of all, I wish you a happy new year, and for aviation enthusiasts like us, many safe landings in 2012 as well!

This is going to be my second written report on A.net (+pics). I have been on several Emirates flights recently and the experience was a mixture between success and disappointment. My second last flight on Emirates, this one, from Zurich to Dubai, was acceptable. But I'll write about it later. The purpose of the flight was vacation with my family in the United Arab Emirates, where we stayed 2 weeks and traveled around the country. For those who know me a little, I used to record my trips and do a little video report about it. So that's why I do not have a lot of pictures for you. But since I started to write here, I decided to take more pictures on my upcoming trips. So that you have got more from my written reports! Here is the link to my video report:

Flight NR: EK 86
Zurich-Dubai
Plane: Boeing 777-300ER
Flight Duration: approx. 5h 30 mins

Since my mother flew business, I could enjoy some of the business class services as well, even tough I flew economy. A very nice service is the pick-up service from EK at your home if it is within about 50 km from the airport. I'm not sure about the distance. So here is our transfer to the airport, the car comes from SIXT car rental. Here we just arrived at the airport.

I could use the business check-in as well and even got a priority sign on my luggage. We proceeded quickly through boarding pass control and landed in the airside center, where you have a very nice view of the new, recently opened Terminal B at Zurich Airport.

We then had a snack inside beautiful airside center and checked the status of our flight. E53 was our gate, so we had to take the train to the midfield terminal.

I do not have pictures from boarding or from the gate area, so the next one is right in the cabin. I really looked forward to this flight, and I as well checked the provided services on my flight on EK homepage. One of the services would be new ICE with widescreen, but when I boarded the plane, I quickly realised that this can't be the awesome widescreen EK has got.

This was the first disappointment of my EK flight experience, but nonetheless, the old screens are still modern and compareable to other european carriers screens. As you can see here, I still could enjoy the flight and the IFE entertainment:

Even though it was about 23.00 when meal service started, I was happy to see some meal coming up, I'm always hungry   When they came to my row, and I was sitting in about the 10th row in economy, they told me only one choice is left. This happend on all my EK flights so far! The second disappointment during the flight. You can see the menu in my video report and some more of cabin and service.

It was a night flight, therefore I wasn't really sure if I'm going to see the landing in the first light of the day or if it's going to be pitch black outside. I was relieved when I saw the sunrise about 45 mins before landing.

I really like to watch the wings working, like flaps and wingflex, ailerons etc.

After landing, we taxied not as usual to the Emirates Terminal, instead of turning right we turned left and I started to think were the heck we're going. It turned out that we will have a bus gate. That was the third and last disappointment during the flight, since it was a night flight and I was really tired I wasn't really keen on a long bus ride. The only advantage was the stunning view of our 777 on ground during disembarking. I simply love those huge engines!

After a 15 min busride, we finally arrived at the terminal, immigration went quick and we were picked up by arabian adventures, a tour operator in the UAE. Our first destination during our vacation was Abu Dhabi, after a 1 h 30 min drive we finally arrived at our hotel in Abu Dhabi. Here are some first impressions of Dubai and the UAE.

We arrived at about 9.00 AM at our hotel, so we decided to have breakfast. The hotel was Shangri-La in Abu Dhabi.

Conclusion:
Overall experience was pretty good, except from the mentioned disappointments everything went well. Enjoyed the flight and emirates great inflight product, even in economy. What I really appreciate is the amount of food you get, you get an additional food box to the regular amount of food. Seat comfort was very good, leg room really nice. Cabin crew was friendly but disappeared right after meal service and didn't show up until landing preparation. I became really thirsty and asked myself why the FA's didn't walk through the cabin with water etc. Hope you enjoyed this report, more will follow soon!

Greetings, amandeuce!

Looks like you had a nice return flight back to DXB with EK. I'm always impressed by the level of EK's Economy Class catering; food looks really good!

Thanks for sharing,

Matthew
I love to fly!

Very interesting video. Seems Emirates are copying the US airlines and SWISS with that cheap salad as a starter.

Would it not have been better to fly ETHIHAD straight to Abu Dhabi?

I need to buy a video camera. What make is yours? Thanks.

Cool trip report! I'm amazed at the amount of food you get in economy? How was the seat? I've been told that EK likes to cram people into their Y cabin....10 abreast in economy on 777 for instance!

Just started watching the video...wow 12 minutes! Will comment on the video on youtube!

Great report, I'll be flying EK's A380 from AKL-SYD and am most certainly looking forward it. As others have said the food looks really good. Also your photo's of Abu Dhabi are great. I would love to visit the UAE one day!

Thank you for the nice words. Yes, food quantity is amazing on EK. Seat is also really comfortable, even tough they put 10 in a row as you mentioned. But I didn't really felt cramped into that seat.

Hi

Nice combined video/picture trip report! It was nice reading and viewing it.
It gives a different prospect of the trip.
3-4-3 seating looked cramped and I noticed indeed some details lacking, tough it still looks better than my average expercience with any US carrier.

Greetings
Marc

Yes, indeed. I don't know how they do it but if you actually are in your seat, it doesn't feel that cramped anymore. But sure depends on how tall etc you are. You sure should experience Emirates once!

Thanks for posting! Pretty generous food servings for a 8-hour flight.

You noted that you've had a mixture of succes and dissapoinments with EK lately, and this flight was acceptable. What made other flights better or worse?

I wouldn't mind deplaning from a 777 at a remote stand!

Thanks for the report, I must confess I didn't watch the video but I read here and saw your photos.
Of your disappointments, for me it's not so bad... I tend to put the IFE onto the map channel anyway, so that would be ok. True enough there were no more of your first choice meals, but the one you had looked good. And finally, a bus gate is a good chance to look at all the aircraft you pass! Though agreed after a night flight you just want to be there and out as soon as possible.
I've not visited Dubai (but have visited AUH - report somewhere on here!), so would be interested in more of your destination pictures too
Thanks again,
