GRU-BCN On Lufthansa

Sat Feb 04, 2012 12:25 pm

Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities my wife and I have ever visited. The trip was planned nearly 6 months prior. My company would pay my airfare but I would have to pay for hers. For weeks I went online looking for cheap airfares. I only found around U$1,500 with a stop in Rome. Then, I found Singapore Airlines for U$900. My travel agent called and said he found an airfare but I needed to act fast. The fare was U$675 roundtrip on Luftansa. Within minutes, the tickets were purchased.

I had never flown Luftansa prior to this trip. From Sao Paulo, we've flown British to London and Alitalia to Moscow via Milan. Our flight from Sao Paulo took us to Munich. We flew an Airbus 340-600. This was my first A340 and I was looking forward to it. My wife could care less! I was impressed. Boy, is it a long plane!

I first realized how long the plane was while looking for the restrooms. Our seats were in the middle of the aircraft. After passing rows and rows of people I was shocked to find only one restroom. I thought, "What in the world?" Then, just after dinner I went again. Boy was I surprised. They were right behind us, and downstairs! Downstairs? That was wild and five of them. No waiting.

Our seats were okay, pretty average. I believe the configuration was 2-5-2. We were on the left-hand side (2). Seats had average legroom as any other I've flown. The headrests would bend. Each seat had individual screens with movies, music and television. I didn't recognize most of the tv shows.

We were given a blanket, pillow, headsets and twice hot throw-away towels. I was annoyed that I couldn't use my own headset as I can on Delta.

Dinner service started promptly. Flight attendants first offered drinks and a snack. A bit later, drinks and dinner. I had the pasta while my wife had chicken. Dinner was good, average, nothing out of the ordinary.

During the night, flight attendants regularly came around with drinks and snacks. Plus, we were allowed to stand in the galleys and talk quietly with other passengers.

Breakfast was impressive. I normally fly Delta to the USA. Delta gives you a bag with a danish and a banana. Luftansa gave us a hot breakfast with eggs, bread and yogurt. We weren't rushed. In fact I believe breakfast was served about 2 hours to landing.

We were then given our 2nd towel to wash our faces and hands. Nice touch.

Flight attendants were friendly, very helpful.

My wife and I collect the Starbucks City Mugs. However, we didn't know that there was no Starbucks once you go through security. When we got to the gate, I asked the agent if I had time to go get one. She told me to run. She was funny and very friendly. I got back in 15 minutes with mug in hand!

Our flight from Munich to Barcelona was good. I believe it was an A321. Flight attendants offered danishes, as many as you wanted plus drinks. The pilot made sure we knew when we were flying over the Alps and other places. Flight was not full. Seats had a good pitch in leg room.

The Barcelona airport is clean, large, modern. Loved it.

On our return, we flew through Frankfurt. Frankfurt was horrible. It reminded me of Miami a few years ago. The flight to Frankfurt was crowded. We were offered some cookies and drinks.

Layover in Frankfurt was 5 hours. The airport's website makes the airport out much more than it is. And once we went through security, there was nothing. Absolutely nothing. I felt like I was in a large closet.

Our return to Sao Paulo was on a 747-400. I made the mistake of reserving the very last row, 56 I think it was. Very bumpy. When the tail moved, we moved. I did that because there was only one other row, on the side, of just 2 seats. Flight was full.

Again, flight attendants were very friendly. Dinner service was prompt as the flight over. I was disappointed in the pasta in that it was a glorified mac 'n cheese. Yet, it was good. My wife had the chicken. She said it was good. Seats had average pitch.

We were disappointed that there were no individual screens. The plane only had screens from the ceilings in the aisles.

Both to Europe and back, the flights were long, 11 hours. I would fly Luftansa again, and within Europe. However, if given the option for Singapore, I'm told to pay the extra for Singapore!

All in all, good flights, good service, nothing really to complain about.

I dislike Frankfurt airport. Signs confusing, long waits for security, some terminals hardly any toilets and at times long, long walks between terminals.
