LH New First Class FRA-EWR: The only passenger

Hello everyone!

I am a long-time reader of airliners.net, and especially the trip report sections, and just love to be able to follow along so many trips to great destinations, albeit virtually. However, the quality of most trip reports here makes it feel like you are almost part of the experience and I truly enjoy that.

Now I have decided that, after reading for so many years, it is time for me to actually start posting trip reports as well. I am in the lucky position to travel the world for business reasons and I am throughout thankful for that, it is a privilege that not everyone has and I know I shall never take it for granted.

Most of my travel is on Star Alliance, where I am HON with Lufthansa, but I also fly Oneworld (Emerald) and Skyteam (ElitePlus), plus use the so-called low-cost airlines (even though the fares are sometimes higher then the ones of the legacy carriers), mainly on shorter European routes.

My main travel takes me around Europe, the US, Southeast Asia and some parts of South America, so I plan to take you along more flights in the future if you enjoy my first trip report.

But enough of the talking, let’s get flying, shall we?

It’s early 2012 and a trip to the US is on the schedule. The trip starts early morning in Hamburg with a feeder flight to Frankfurt, a standard domestic trip. I am way too tired to care about taking pictures, just take my seat in the business class cabin of the A321, try to nap away and even miss the infamous “breakfast” offering of a domestic Lufthansa flight – well, there is actually not that much to miss, so sleep is certainly of higher value here.

After about 1 hour in the air, we arrive in Frankfurt and I head to the S-Bahn to go into the city, where I have scheduled a meeting. My flight LH402 to Newark doesn’t depart until 130PM and it is my preferred flight to the New York City area, as it leaves time for some business in Frankfurt, while not arriving too late into New York (such as LH484, which doesn’t leave until 530PM from Frankfurt).

I get back to the airport just at the announced boarding time, so no visit to the First Class Terminal this time, but instead I decide to walk to the C-Gates (where my flight leaves from), getting a couple of minutes of “exercise” and skipping any lounge offerings today.

LH 402
FRA-EWR
B 747-400
First Class
STD 120PM (ATD 135PM)
STA 345PM (ATA 340PM)

Welcome on board the new Lufthansa First Class on the Boeing 747-400:

The new First Class is currently available on selected B 747-400, some A 340-600 as well as a single A330-300, but al of the long-haul fleet is scheduled to be updated by the end of 2012. While it took Lufthansa way too long to improve the outdated recent First Class product, the result is all the more beautiful and a true benchmark for all other airlines.

It features a seat and a full bed, next to each other, with ample private space and a superb seating quality, only to be exceeded by the best sleeping experience in the sky: a full bed with a nice mattress, tucked away in between the seat and the side-wall, with a comfy duvet and fine linens.

On this particular day, I was lucky to be the only one travelling in First Class, so I had the whole cabin to myself.

Before take-off in Frankfurt:

Very elegant cabin layout, materials and colors are giving a very cozy, yet exclusive feeling:

The bed next to the seat:

Cabin layout: Only 8 seats on the upper deck of the 747-400:

We pushed back almost on time, but had to wait for a few minutes en-route to the runway. After a short while, it was out turn to take off into the blue skies of this nice winter day in Frankfurt – 8hrs 25 mins for New York!

Right after take-off: Another B 747-400 is getting ready to leave:

Hard left turn over downtown Frankfurt:

Over the clouds, it was going to be an extremely smooth flight, the seatbelt sign stayed off for the entire duration of the trip:

As I was the only passenger, I was asked by the extremely friendly crew when I would like to be served lunch today, and due to the fact that I missed out on any lounge food before the flight, I decided to get things started right away.

I decided to break the routine and start with the soup first, caviar later.

The soup; a bit too salty for my taste, so I did not finish it:

Starters: variation of small appetizers with caviar and traditional sides. As I never drink alcohol on flights, I skipped the vodka with it:

Main course: Salmon in lemon-infused cream sauce with broccoli, a fantastic dish, the fish was prepared perfectly:

Instead of dessert right away, I just asked for some fruit salad to be saved for later and went to work. The table on the new first class seat is perfect for working, it fits my laptop plus some papers spread out and can be turned by 90 degrees to allow easy exit of the seat. This was not the case on the old seat, it was practically impossible to leave the seat while having a laptop and documents on it, as it could not be fully turned to the side. Small design change, big improvement!

In-between a visit to the (private) bath room:

After a few hours of work, I noticed that we were already over Canada; time literally flew away on this trip:

Shortly after, I was asked if I liked a snack service, and how can one deny such tasty offerings? Today’s selection consisted, among others, of various small sandwiches, mini-bagels, a traditional German stew, fruits, cake and pudding. I went with the sandwiches and bagels, plus some cheese from lunch and a small slice of the cake – I have to watch my weight, after all ☺

The pre-arrival snack:

After the snack service, I decided to take a quick 45-minute power nap in those lovely First Class bed. It is perfectly comfortable with ample of private space and a very cozy feeling. On the return flight, I slept for a full 6hrs, preventing any jetlag at all!

The first class bed:

About 45 minutes out of Newark, we started the decent into Liberty Intl. Airport. A visit to the bathroom to change back into my suit (after all, I had a early dinner meeting in New York and one wants to be properly dressed for that) and we were already nearing our destination.

Nice clouds on our way down:

Allow me a quick side-note on my opinion about dress coded on planes these days. I agree that everyone should be able to feel comfortable on board and waer whatever he/she likes, BUT I am also in some way a traditionalist (albeit being just in my mid-30’s). When flying First Class, I feel it is the right way to be dressed nicely; if possible I will fly in a suit or at least wearing some nice dress pants and a nice shirt. I just feel this is the right outfit for a classic product and also a way of showing some respect for the flight attendants and the product they are serving to their passengers.

Call me outdated, call me conservative, but flying in first class with shorts, or in a t-shirt, is just wrong and lacks any common style.

But enough of my personal travel “guidelines” and back to approaching Newark.
We are meanwhile just minutes away from touchdown and the typical scene of New Jersey comes into side:

This could be Hoboken?

After landing smoothly, we taxi to our gate and I cross my fingers that immigration would be empty. While in JFK, Lufthansa does sometimes provide a personal assistance service though the immigration for their HON members (and by that saving sometime a full hour of wait time), this is not the case in Newark. But luckily today, lines are practically non-existing and within 10 minutes I am allowed to enter the USA.

As I have only hand luggage, I am out in the arrivals hall in no time, head to the train station and disappear in the bubbling city of New York - about 1 hour after arrival at the gate, I already enjoy the view from my hotel room.

Welcome to New York:

I hope you enjoyed my very first a.net trip report – there could be more to follow, if you want me to ☺

Happy Landings!

Hallo! Great first report. LH's new F cabin looks absolutely great. A pity for the salty soup, this should not happen at this level of comfort but the rest of the food is a delight. I've noticed you had no wine with your meals. Maybe a personal choice but were you offered any? Were the options available on par with a First-class service?

I fully agree. These rules should also be extended somehow to all other classes. Back in the eighties, when taking the plane was a special moment for all non-businessmen, people used to care more about the way they look. I still enjoy this "old fashion" in sub-saharan Africa in general, where suits and ties and nice dresses are worn by most travellers.

Thanks for showing us LH's F today!

Have a nice stay in NY!

Great first report, welcome aboard!

LH's new F looks darn good, I've passed the opportunity of the old F before on a number of occasions, not any more though!

Why is it infamous? The time on these domestic hops is limited. And C/F Class passengers have access to lounges anyway.

LH's new F Class product is nice, but can it really match the fancy suites on various carriers?

I see your point about shorts and simple t-shirts, but I'd regard jeans as perfectly fine as well.

Yes, wine was on offer but I never dink alcohol during flights as to minimize any jetlag troubles.

I just think it is usually very basic, of course it is only a domestic feeder flight, but a nice ham or cheese sandwich would already be fine by me   But you are right, breakfast in the lounge is always the better option, just not this time with a 6AM departure.

Hola LufthnasaHON!

Quoting LufthansaHON (Thread starter):
Now I have decided that, after reading for so many years, it is time for me to actually start posting trip reports as well.

Welcome to the a.net trip reports writing section, really nice to start with such an interesting experience.

LH will have a great long-haul First class section when all the renovation is completed, as far as I know a couple of A343s have already been retrofitted as well, so that will give more chances to catch them, anyway I will save my miles to try to enjoy this product until next year.
I think the new product is really nice, although I do not like the idea of having the windows so far away when seated, I am a big fan of taking pictures when flying and having the bed in there does not allow for a comfortable situation.

I ahve only travelled once on First class, and this was LX last summer... a great experience. I read yours with much interest and you were really lucky.

Quoting LufthansaHON (Thread starter):
I was lucky to be the only one travelling in First Class, so I had the whole cabin to myself.

I cannot imagine a better flight... First and the only passenger, in the B747 upper deck, that is like having a whole plane to yourself, almost a private flight across the pond.

Quoting LufthansaHON (Thread starter):

I do agree with your opinipn, but I must admit that jeans and a sweater can be acceptable as well.

I look forward to reading more of your trips....

Salut!

Hi there and welcome to TR section

I like the concept of the bed next to the seat and certainly is an enhancement thats positive.

As others have said smart jeans and a jumper or shirt is suitable for F Class but I agree shorts and T Shirt is a bit too casual. When flying in such a nice product it is always nice to dress up rather than down without being uncomfortable.

Well, you can consider me to have the strong opposite opinion of that. If I spend my own money to fly business or first, I'll dress how I please. In my opinion, only the airline have the right to dictate what I can and can't wear. I wouldn't worry for a second about "offending" another passenger with my choice of clothing and I find it honestly arrogant that someone would be of the opinion that I should dress the way they think I should.

Well well well. It's not that easy, I think. Dress codes are useful cultural tools to make most people feel well. Do you think it is arrogant if someone is upset that someone attends to her wedding in a bikini? Do you think it is arrogant if someone would be offended if the president of one's country would deliver his/her new years speech cross-dressed? Do you think it is arrogant if a widow is offended if someone shows up at the funeral of her husband wearing a clown costume?

I am aware that these are extreme examples, but for me, they exemplify that what we wear is/should not be a 100% private matter. Unless you are a cultural anarchist, it makes sense to behave in line with some cultural norms.

Now, whether this extends to the way people dress in a plane is a different question. But I tend to be with the TO here. Please, no bikinis or speedos in F, C, Y, or anywhere else besides at the beach.

= While I usually dress "smartly" (nice jeans/shirt/sweater), I also tend to agree with the above comment. If you are spending the kind of money one does in F, it is your call - not some social convention others have formulated for you. Moreover, sometimes I find the people who dress over the top are trying too hard to fit in. But this is one of those things where everyone's opinion would differ. And, there is nothing wrong with that.

Very Nice report. I agree with you on this statement. If i'm flying business class I too try to wear something a little nice. I see some people getting on planes looking like total slobs and it disgusts me a little bit.

Well, sometimes yes, sometimes no. But I fly way too often to maximize my time in the lounge each and every time, so I really don't mind not going there. And I also don't need a limo transfer just for ego reasons, so walking to the gate (especially C gates) is really nice.

BTW, will be in AMS shortly, so maybe we run into each other there

People should feel free to dress how they want, but to a certain extent. I always wear neat, long jeans, as far as jeans can be neat, accompanied by a polo-shirt or blouse, regardless of the destination. Smart casual you could say. I don't like people wearing training outfits and other, in my opinion too informal clothing.

Great report! How lucky to get to be the only 1 in F ; like you are traveling on a private jet !

I agree with you about the comment regarding wearing shorts in J or F. Its a privilege to fly up front, and should be treated as such. When we flew to CPH in J on SAS from IAD back in September, my fiancee and I dressed in business casual; I can't stand to see people wearing sweatpants/tank tops in a Premium cabin. I know it sounds old fashioned, but come on!

Nice 1st report. Looking forward to your return leg!

Nice report.

As far as a dress code, I believe it is up to that revenue passenger to dress as formal or as casual as he/she desires. Flying in a premium cabin is not a privilege if you paid for it, it is simply a product that you purchased and as such no one has the right to dictate what you should wear.

Hi

Thank you for taking the time to wright this trip report. I am not sure that the bed next to the seat in first looks very smart but it must be the most comfortable way to fly.

With regards to dress code's its seams that many smart London restaurants no longer have dress codes, and its the restaurants that are not really smart but that are trying to give the impression that they are, that do. Many people who have money and have always had money tend to dress like they bought all their clothes in one quick trip to a charity shop several years ago. With regards to flying first, if your are not a guest of the airline and have bought your own ticket then I think its totally up to you.

Great first report and please do keep them coming!.....

I usually travel exclusively in F on long haul flights, and i have seen all sorts of people and attire in the premium cabins, some over the top, some appropriate and some...well...disgusting....for me i am naturally not a suit and tie guy unless i have to be in one for meetings. My rule of thumb for travel in F cabin or even J, is to be comfortable. Usually, its a nice clean pair of jeans and a Lacoste polo. ....for me, i can dress down once the flight takes off and we are getting ready for bed...that when I usually change into the pyjamas that is given ...especially CX with their Shanghai Tang pyjamas   ...just me 2 cents worth ....neat and presentable are the key words here   ...

Its a privilege to fly up front, and should be treated as such.

No, it's access you've bought and paid for and unless the airline tell you up front what you should wear, you can wear what you please. I've flown in AC executive first in jeans and a guns n roses t-shirt and I'd happily do it again.

Hi and welcome LufthansaHON ! ...
nice opening ... looking forward to the next report ...

you can not generalize but my experience are the same hehehe

Excellent first TR. I can't wait to read more from you, LufthansaHON!

And I do agree with you on dress. I can't believe some of the people who fly wearing pyjamas.

I know I have; thanks for sharing!

Looks very good.

I agree--while I find suits uncomfortable, there has to be a semblance of dressing well when in a premium cabin. Not over the top; at least decent.

Quoting LufthansaHON (Thread starter):
Call me outdated, call me conservative, but flying in first class with shorts, or in a t-shirt, is just wrong and lacks any common style

Here, I totally agree. But, hey, I don't even wear shorts or t-shirts when travelling economy. In fact, i don't like to wear shorts at all.

Quoting SEA (Reply 26):

This seems to be a rather common phenomenon here in the US--but not in premium cabins usually. Pyjamas, flip-flops... Just doesn't seem right to me.

Very good TR, hope to see more soon!

I agree with you completely re the dress code in F and even in J class. I've seen pics of some wearing shorts, t-shirts and sandals looking totally bizarre, out of place and rather ridiculous. A nice dress shirt with pants and nice shoes always shows one off better and I've noticed the crew treat you better as well, not like some back packer who got lucky and received a free upgrade.

.... welcome....

And may you keep on writing trip reports of this calibre. Excellent stuff.

I salute your ability to do work on a plane. Still too much of a novelty for me.

Brilliant report, and a brilliant and long overdue product.

Well, flying time is working the for me. My company pays for business travel, so I feel it is my obligation to spend time in the premium cabins wisely, by working on daylight flights and sleeping on redeye flights.

I am not sure that the bed next to the seat in first looks very smart but it must be the most comfortable way to fly.

For me, it is currently the most comfortable way of sleeping on any airline/aircraft. In my opinion, it even outscores SQ Suites in terms of personal comfort. I never slept better in any F seat/bed then on my last two flights on the 747 Uppder Deck of LH.

Do you think it is arrogant if someone is upset that someone attends to her wedding in a bikini?

Not arrogant - but I would say inappropriate... How do you class a wedding in the same category as flying first class? Or wearing a Bikini?

Quoting Rabenschlag (Reply 9):
Do you think it is arrogant if someone would be offended if the president of one's country would deliver his/her new years speech cross-dressed?

ONLY if the said country has ISSUES with cross dressers. What's wrong with people that identify as that?

Quoting Prinair (Reply 21):

As far as a dress code, I believe it is up to that revenue passenger to dress as formal or as casual as he/she desires. Flying in a premium cabin is not a privilege if you paid for it, it is simply a product that you purchased and as such no one has the right to dictate what you should wear.

Well said.

Well, being a frequent F/J flyer, I have to agree, and disagree with you about the dress code. Now I would love to dress very formal while flying, but being as I'm only 14 years old, it would just look stupid. I really enjoy dressing professionally, and if I could while flying in premium cabins, I would, but I would get stranger looks wearing formal clothes in F, than just shorts and a t-shirt. But I know when I am older, I will always try to look my best when flying F/J. The only thing is, not everyone is like me. I enjoy dressing well, but some think that since they are paying, they can do/wear whatever they want, unless the airline tells them otherwise. If I was going on vacation to say, an island deatination, etc, I would never dress formal on board, because I love to get in the spirit of things! That's just my opinion. Thanks.

I'm sure that as long as the jeans and guns n roses t-shirt are in a good condition and you are a clean looking person there's is no one on this thread that will be offended.

I think what does offend other passengers is not only what someone wears but the attitude that often comes with it. On several flights in S.E. Asia I did see local people that frowned upon Europeans with, let's just say, a lot of presence in terms of behaviour and the way they dressed ("look how alternative I am with my tattooed bare arms, my 3-days beard, my old shorts and my flip flops").

For me personally, clean jeans, a long sleeve shirt -no tie- and good looking suede shoes of a certain brand is the most comfortable way to travel in all classes.

What a flight, solo in F class on the 747 Upper deck acros the atlantic? That's like heaven!! Divineeee
One great product from LH!!

But seriously that Salmon Cream sauce does look like pre-packaged microwavable food you can get from 7-eleven around here.

Also love the immigration at EWR! Much much better experience compared with JFK!!

Travel in style means you dress to suit the environment. Wear sweater when it's cold, less frabric when it's warmer, smart-casual out there among public (a way to respect others too). F class cabin is still public to me as you will still be present among unknown people.

And when I'm out there among unknown people, public, I try not to embarrass myself and dress to blend in.
So whether F - C - Y class cabin, I consider them all 'Public' and I will dress myself up a little, for sure not trying too hard and go over the top as if I'm heading to Paris fashion week after landed.

Anyhow, many thanks for great trip report. Keem them coming!!
Let's just blame it on yields.

Hi LufthansaHON,

Welcome to the forum, I hope you'd get to write many more posts.

Great TR, the new F class of LH looks great, very uneconomical I must say, at least comparing to the old product, but I guess that was the demand on the market, It would be interesting to see other carrier follow this bed + seat idea....

I have to say, that If I had the option to fly F, I'd opt for a night flight, especially east bound. That way you have the entire day to work, and get a good sleep at night, getting ready for the new day.

BTW, How often do you fly to become HON, ElitePlus and Emrald?

i am on the road 2-3 days every week, criss-crossing Europe plus trips to the US and Asia every 4-5 weeks.
I will however loose my SkyTeam ElitePlus by the end of the year and drop down to Gold there, as I am missing quite a few US domestic segments lately, but I am certainly OK with that
