JFK-ICN-NRT-YYZ Korean Air A380 + Air Canada B77W

Mon Feb 27, 2012 2:34 am

It's been a long time since I've posted a trip report, so here goes.

The purpose of this trip was to try Korean Air's A380. So I took the night flight from New York JFK to Seoul Incheon, a few weeks ago. The flight departs JFK at 00:50 and arrives around 05:00. The entire flight would be in the dark.

My routing included:

Montreal - New York LGA - Air Canada EMB-190
New York JFK - Seoul - Korean Air A380
Seoul - Tokyo Narita - Korean Air 777-300
Tokyo Narita - Toronto - Air Canada 777-300ER

I will include all photos at the bottom, and each photo has a caption.

The trip started off perfectly, with an ontime evening departure from Montreal to La Guardia. I don't think I've ever departed ontime for a flight to LGA or EWR that departs after 17:00, so this was a real treat. The flight was smooth, and the sky was clear on arrival into New York, so I snapped a few night shots of the arrival into La Guardia. Once there, I took the NYC Airport bus service to JFK, which only took 15 minutes because it was the 22:00 departure.

At JFK, I took the monorail around a few times. It looked like the airport was dead. Flights were arriving and departing ontime (for once) because of the ideal clear weather conditions. Our A380 departure to Seoul was probably the last scheduled pax flight out of JFK that night. At Terminal 1, only Turkish was leaving fairly late (about a 22:30 departure).

The flight from JFK to ICN was totally full in Economy (only 1 open seat... because a passenger had lost their passport between the checkin desk and the gate... so that pax was denied boarding in the end). First Class was completely empty, and I'm not sure how full Business Class was upstairs cause I never went up there.

I was seated in the middle section, closer to the back of the airplane. It always amazes me how quiet the A380 cabin is during flight. You can hear full conversations of passengers sitting across the aisle, and you can hear crying babies one or two cabins away from you. It's almost as if it's too quiet.

Korean Air's service is top-notch. The F/As dress beautifully, and serve you always with a smile. The economy class meal was probably the best I have ever eaten in Y-class ever -- in my 2 million miles + of flying. A photo is shown below. We departed ontime, and arrived 20 minutes early. I slept for about 9 hours, only waking up for meal services.

On the way back from Seoul I flew via Tokyo Narita, flying the Korean Air 777-300 (HL7533) between ICN and NRT, then catching Air Canada's 77W from NRT-YYZ. The weather was perfect in both cities, so I took advantage, and did some spotting at both airports (see photos below).

Korean Air's 777-300 was only about 65-70% full. Business Class only had about 10 people max, and I didn't see if anyone was in First. Incheon Airport is my favourite airport worldwide. It is modern and clean, not too big, not too small. It really has a nice feel to it. I took many photos around the terminal before heading to NRT.

Once at Narita, I went spotted at both observation decks, and even experienced a brief earthquake when I was at the Terminal 2 deck. The building started shaking, and everyone looked at each other with a bit of worry, but it didn't last more than 10 seconds.

The weather was perfect, so I snapped numerous photos. The flight to Toronto was ontime, and only about 70% full. Our ground speed hit 760mph over the Pacific, and our crossing was fairly shallow (to take advantage of those winds). We crossed North America land around Seattle, and stayed over US Airspace until the descent into Toronto.

All in all a great trip. I had fun flying another airline's A380 -- still have Qantas and Emirates and China Southern to fly. Here are the photos, and a link to our facebook page for even more pics. Enjoy!

Hi Matt!

Nice report with nice pictures ! Especially like the spotting pictures from NRT.

I might try the KE 773 someday on that same routing.

You should start posting again more often.

Hi,

Great report. KE's A380 product doesn't look too bad. I agree that KE's bibimbap is very good, Whenever I fly with them I usually try to order that option.

BTW your photo's are great, especially the NRT observation deck photo's.

Hi Mel,

Thank you for sharing your great TR!!! Really very nice and special way you present this here and enjoy it very much reading your experience!! Must have taking you quite a time to prepare them!!!

Quoting MEL (Thread starter):
and you can hear crying babies one or two cabins away from you. It's almost as if it's too quiet.

That is really amazing!! And also you are lucky to have the sleep on the plane!!! I had on my last that can remember max. 1hour of a 13hour flight!!!

Quoting MEL (Thread starter):
I'm not sure how full Business Class was upstairs cause I never went up there.

Is it then allowed to go upstairs on KE's A380 (permission needed)?

Quoting MEL (Thread starter):
I was seated in the middle section

Where then all window seats taken??

Quoting MEL (Thread starter):
The economy class meal was probably the best I have ever eaten in Y-class ever

The food really looks very tasty and yummy!!!!!! I'm off tomorrow morning on AB via TXL to DME and then with UN from DME to SGN and doubt that will be as good as yours

A compliment about the quality and colors of your photos!!! Did you use maybe in addition a special filter?

Cheers

From one who used to live near Tokyo, your pictures at NRT bring back fond memories. I have been to Seoul, but it was in 1989 and Inchon was not even on the map yet.

The DOWN WITH NARITA AIRPORT sign was put there by the local farmers in protest of the new runway opened in 2002. The runway is a short runway because NRT could not get all the land from the farmers. So the long hauls have to use 16R and 34L for takeoff. The 777's and smaller aircraft can land on 16L and 34R.
Have you kissed a 777 today?

The ANA 77W looks beautiful (and huge!!!)

Loved the Air India shot!!

Finnairs new colors are horrendous!!

Excellent Trip Report.
You have great quality pictures, were they all with your iPhone?

I like that you call many of the aircraft pictured, "beautiful". They are, and only an enthusiast truly appreciates it.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

Absolutey brilliant report. A short narrative, photos with descriptions and all nicely presented. Your photos are so nice and crisp, especially those night shots. That tail shot of the KE A380 and TK 77W is awesome!! What camera do you use? I had no idea that Transaero was now sending the 777-300 to YYZ. Wow!!

The quality of your images is amazing and I love the text written on it!

I especially love your pics at ICN, brings back memories! Gotta love the OZ 744 and that DL 763 at NRT. It seems like KE has an excellent product both on the A380 and the 773.

Looking forward for more of your TRs!

Hi everyone.

Thanks for the nice comments. It's been a few years since I've posted a trip report, so I felt I needed to get back 'in the habit' of showing everyone my fascination with travelling, and the beauty of aviation.

My camera is a Canon 7D, with lenses of 17-40mm and 100-400mm (I desperately need something in between). The camera has been a real star, and the photos really require minimal amounts of editting in photoshop (thankfully -- cause I hate editting pics). No filters at all. For the cabin photos, I usually use a higher ISO (300-400), at f4.5 usually low shutter speed also. For outside shots, I usually shoot ISO 100 or 160, aim for f7-8 and adjust shutter speed accordingly, for a sharp/crisp shot. Only a few of the photos were taken with the iPhone (ICN baggage claim, and a few meal photos). Usually I try to add a caption "iPHONE pic" to tell the difference.

Hi Lars, good to hear from you. I would have preferred to fly the Korean 77W instead of the "short-range" 773, but didn't really have a choice on the ICN-NRT sector. I was contemplating waiting for the 332 that operates Korean Air flight 1.

I know that I'm lucky to be able to sleep on planes. I sleep out of boredom really. Once we're airborne and the meals are served, I suffer from 'boredom' cause I really don't enjoy watching movies (short TV programs I watch... just not many movies). So I throw the earplugs in, put the eyeshades on... and those act as a sleeping pill for me ... thankfully.

All the window seats were taken on the A380... I didn't have a choice. But at least I wasn't missing much, as the entire flight was dark outside. Korean Air didn't have a 'rope' prohibiting me from going upstairs. I was going to try it, but I could hear the F/As working in the galley up there, and I know they'd turn me away as soon as I got up there.

Unfortunately now at Narita, the 77Ws and 747s are also landing on the "short" runway. So spotting isn't as great, as they really mix up the runways more. Before, 70-90% of the "interesting action" took place on the long runway.

I'm pretty sure the Transaero 773 at Toronto was a one-time-only deal. Usually they fly the 763, 772, 744. It's amazing how quickly that company is expanding its wings.

I just posted another trip report -- the 787 Experience from Frankfurt to Haneda.

Hi MEL,
I absolutely love reading your trip reports. If I could get some pointers on how to take such clear & crisp photographs (even via PM); that would be amazing. I would like to take pictures like you do; however I am no where near 50% of what you are   I am truly inspired by your photography...
Another one of your wonderful trip reports   Thanks a bunch for writing this & sharing it with us. FB is blocked here at work; but I'll surely click the 'like' button once I get home...
PS... The Korean Airlines Y meal probably looks to be the best presented meal I have seen in a while... It actually looks great.

Cheers

Great pics. Absolutely hate the "new" JAL livery - like a step backwards in time. Why did they change it?!

More great photos, thanks! I didn't know that Transaero had the 777-300 - it looks good! I quite like the new/old look JAL - it's great to see the Crane back on the tail.

Quoting MEL (Thread starter):
Our A380 departure to Seoul was probably the last scheduled pax flight out of JFK that night

If only JFK weren't that busy, from what I've seen, flights depart at almost all hours, with some of the REALLY early morning flights (1-2 am) going to the Caribbean and South America. But fantastic report and AMAZING pictures!

Hello MEL and thanks so much for the awesome trip report. The pics are amazing; I especially loved the pics of the planes you took at NRT and the pics of the mountains that you took from your window seat. Many thanks for taking the time to put the report together and for sharing it with us.

I particularly enjoyed the report because I recently flew JFK-ICN on KE (744 though) and I am now a big fan of KE. I am so jealous after reading your report... I wish I had been able to fly on board the A380.

Quoting MEL" class="quote" target="_blank">MEL (Thread starter):
Our A380 departure to Seoul was probably the last scheduled pax flight out of JFK that night. At Terminal 1

I believe there is an AM JFK-MEX flight around midnight or 1 a.m. departing from T1. I have taken it a few times. The KE lounge at JFK's T1 is the Priority Pass lounge, so you sometimes see a few Mexicans there waiting for their AM flight together with the KE and TK passengers.

Quoting MEL" class="quote" target="_blank">MEL (Thread starter):

Just like when I flew back in May. I suppose JFK is one of the best performing stations for KE.

Oh, nice! I am writing this report as I am waiting in the Maple Leaf lounge for my AC flight from YYZ to MEX (C-class A319). I would love to try North America's best airline's business class service on a widebody someday... not sure how I feel about herringbone layouts, but I am still interested hehe.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738
