It's been a long time since I've posted a trip report, so here goes.
The purpose of this trip was to try Korean Air's A380. So I took the night flight from New York JFK
to Seoul Incheon, a few weeks ago. The flight departs JFK
at 00:50 and arrives around 05:00. The entire flight would be in the dark.
My routing included:
Montreal - New York LGA
- Air Canada EMB-190
New York JFK
- Seoul - Korean Air A380
Seoul - Tokyo Narita - Korean Air 777-300
Tokyo Narita - Toronto - Air Canada 777-300ER
I will include all photos at the bottom, and each photo has a caption.
The trip started off perfectly, with an ontime evening departure from Montreal to La Guardia. I don't think I've ever departed ontime for a flight to LGA
that departs after 17:00, so this was a real treat. The flight was smooth, and the sky was clear on arrival into New York, so I snapped a few night shots of the arrival into La Guardia. Once there, I took the NYC Airport bus service to JFK
, which only took 15 minutes because it was the 22:00 departure.
, I took the monorail around a few times. It looked like the airport was dead. Flights were arriving and departing ontime (for once) because of the ideal clear weather conditions. Our A380 departure to Seoul was probably the last scheduled pax flight out of JFK
that night. At Terminal 1, only Turkish was leaving fairly late (about a 22:30 departure).
The flight from JFK
was totally full in Economy (only 1 open seat... because a passenger had lost their passport between the checkin desk and the gate... so that pax was denied boarding in the end). First Class was completely empty, and I'm not sure how full Business Class was upstairs cause I never went up there.
I was seated in the middle section, closer to the back of the airplane. It always amazes me how quiet the A380 cabin is during flight. You can hear full conversations of passengers sitting across the aisle, and you can hear crying babies one or two cabins away from you. It's almost as if it's too quiet.
Korean Air's service is top-notch. The F/As dress beautifully, and serve you always with a smile. The economy class meal was probably the best I have ever eaten in Y-class ever -- in my 2 million miles + of flying. A photo is shown below. We departed ontime, and arrived 20 minutes early. I slept for about 9 hours, only waking up for meal services.
On the way back from Seoul I flew via Tokyo Narita, flying the Korean Air 777-300 (HL7533) between ICN
, then catching Air Canada's 77W from NRT
. The weather was perfect in both cities, so I took advantage, and did some spotting at both airports (see photos below).
Korean Air's 777-300 was only about 65-70% full. Business Class only had about 10 people max, and I didn't see if anyone was in First. Incheon Airport is my favourite airport worldwide. It is modern and clean, not too big, not too small. It really has a nice feel to it. I took many photos around the terminal before heading to NRT
Once at Narita, I went spotted at both observation decks, and even experienced a brief earthquake when I was at the Terminal 2 deck. The building started shaking, and everyone looked at each other with a bit of worry, but it didn't last more than 10 seconds.
The weather was perfect, so I snapped numerous photos. The flight to Toronto was ontime, and only about 70% full. Our ground speed hit 760mph over the Pacific, and our crossing was fairly shallow (to take advantage of those winds). We crossed North America land around Seattle, and stayed over US Airspace until the descent into Toronto.
All in all a great trip. I had fun flying another airline's A380 -- still have Qantas and Emirates and China Southern to fly. Here are the photos, and a link to our facebook page for even more pics. Enjoy!
