The Last B747 Flight Of Singapore Airlines HKG-SIN

Fri Apr 06, 2012 5:42 pm

Hi everyone!

I have just travelled on the last B747 flight of Singapore Airlines.

Singapore Airlines puts on the best show to over 300 enthusiasts which lots of them travelled around the world to make today's flight.

It was a fantastic yet emotional history making event today. Friendships were re-united without borders during the flight. SIA lives up to the high expectations delivered the usual outstanding service throughout the flight. With a smooth touch down of the Queen of the skies in Singapore ending the event on a high note.

Instead of posting the usual trip report, I opt to post a video trip report with the hope to bringing you closer to the event. I understand some of you couldn't make it but I hope sharing this video is the second best thing.

I hope you enjoy the SIA Journey with me.

Hey Sam

Thanks a lot for posting that video. I remember many SQ flights both in J and Y to Australia and to the US on the 744. Thanks so much for posting a nice memory of Megatop.

Cheers

Ohh WOW !!!!
You are one lucky guy, well done fantastic TR.
SG sure look after their cabins, still looks so good.
Always promised myself a trip in First with them, probably THE most classy offering of any airline on a 747.

Any idea who will get this aircraft next?

Thanks for sharing.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. Funny how the 744 in the video looks as clean and "new" as the IR 742 in your Air Iran TR. You are very lucky to be able to fly these great birds. Wish you the best.

On a side note, it's funny to witness how the slow arrival of the A380 has signed the desitiny of the 747, along with the excellent triple 7!

great report! saw many times SQ B744 departing or arriving in FRA ....

Amazing to think that SQ has no 747 more as it was for so many years the backbone of this airline.

I was always fastinated about the names SQ gave the 747, like MegaTop, MegaArk, etc...

Cheers

Thank you, Sam. That video brought a tear to my eye, especially that last speech at the end. I don't know who made that speech, but very well said, whoever you are. I remember the days when the 744 was brand spanking new. To my eyes at least, she'll always and forever be the Queen of the Skies - the most elegant, and beautiful subsonic commercial aircraft ever built. Nothing will ever compare with Her Majesty.

Thanks Sam! Amazing as usual.

The product on SQ747-400 is still beyond industry standard, minus the tiny PTV in Economy.

The F seats on SQ 744 is one of the most talk about F seat of all time.
The F and C products are still top notch.

Surely SQ 744 will be missed!!

Hi All

It was a very emotional day for me, and a very excited event to attend. It was my utmost pleasure to meet many of you yesterday and receive warm greetings and kind words from you. Waking up today and realizing the SIA B747 pax is no longer around is just really hard.

I have decided to publish a selection of SIA B747 images I've taken around the world.

Please enjoy. All Copyright Sam Chui

You can view the latest video + photos of SIA 747 via the Youtube link below: (10 mins 49 secs, the first 6 mins is the same)

Hi Sam,

so cool that you have been on board of this historical flight, really enjoyed the video you made. And well done by SQ to make it such a event. Also thanks for that wonderful collection of 747 pictures, some very nice shots.

I have seen the SQ B747 often in Frankfurt, it was always the highlight on visits to FRA. I really liked it how the put the Megatop stickers on the upper deck. Quite sad that there are now gone.

Thanks a lot for letting us take apart in this event

I have seen SQ 747-400's in FRA, LAX, SFO, ZRH, NRT, HKG (Kai Tak and Chep Lap Kok), and SYD. I watched this video with some sadness. Even though I have never flown SQ, I have heard they are the best. In January 1999 I was privileged to ride cockpit jumpseat on CX 883 LAX-HKG. We were asked if we could accept 24L for takeoff instead of 25R because of the waiting time. We did, and we were right behind an SQ 747-400 flying LAX-NRT.
Thank you for posting. It's great you got to be on this flight. But don't you usually fly in first? From the pictures, it didn't look like first class was full.
Have you kissed a 777 today?

Sam, once again, a great report. The speech at the end was great and it also brought a tear to my eye! Flown on the SIA queen so many times - SIN-BOM, SIN-NRT-LAX, SIN-TPE-LAX, SIN-HKG... was also my first inflight flight deck visit to - SQ6. Great photos as well! I remember seeing -SPJ at JFK late last year and she still looked so good....

Thanks again!

A nice set of aerial pictures of the Singapore Airlines 747s. Take offs pix are good too.

I know all about the really nice leather and mahogany old fashioned F Sky Suites as I flew in them several times.

One of Singapore Airlines 747-400s took me to one event I will always remember: the 3 Cunard Queens Royal rendez-vous in NYC. Her name was 9V-SVM the second weekend of January 2008. A weekend visit to attend this one-time event as the QE2 was going to be retired several months later. I flew back from JFK to Frankfurt with the same cabin crew I had on the way over. I let them know about the event in the harbour as none of them knew about it.

Got to fly on these birds in ultimate comfort many more times before they were retired. I loved the old leather Sky Suites in the nose of the Singapore 747s. They were so stylish and so was the service that went with them. I remember that one time when I was one of two passengers. I always "booked the cook". It was great.

I am sad to see them go.

I could have gone to Hong Kong and got myself a last F SkySuite for this last and final passenger flight of the Singapore Airlines B-747s as I've got stacks of frequent flyer miles in the bank and many young Singapore aviation geeks friends on the flight. It would have been too nostalgic.

I wonder what airline will be "Last to Fly the B-747 with the very last absolute final commercial passenger flight? We may have to wait a couple more years before it happens.

After that I guess we will have to try our luck with one of the private owners, if ever!

I was quite desperate to join as well, but hesitated as I thought it would be full. A few seats showed up on the booking site at the last moment, and I read about the website problem causing it to be overbooked, hence I decided not to risk it.

I should have! Oh boy I want those model planes!

Wow, usually CX B744 are very heavy and there aren't much room left for takeoff to HKG from 24L. I bet the plane rotated with 1500 feet to go. (between 7 and 8 marker)

It was full. People are free to move around cabins to meet friends and talk to others, so some went to upper deck or down the back to the crew rest.

Hi Sam,

2 TRs from you in a week - what a bonus!
Again, another awesome pics and TR from the master.
Thank you for taking us on the last SQ 747 flight!

SQ 747 strikes a cord to almost all of us.
We grew up with it. I did!
My very first First Class trip was in this magnificent a/c
My very first trip to Europe was on the SQ's 747
Got the chance to be on the flight on the 1000th 747 a/c.
Had the chance to be on the jump-seat on take-off and landing on the 747! I'll never forget the experience!

It's SQ's 747 that's the last.
We still have other airlines flying the varient 747s - even the SPs!
So, all's not lost ... yet.

Thanks Sam!

Sam,

Thank You so very much for posting the final flight, I was absolutely dissappointed not to make the flight. I saw 9V-SPQ operate the second last departure from MEL of SQ228 747 operations!!!!

So once again thank you so very much - I always love reading your adventures on airliners.net.

Kind Regards

FSS Magladene vs SkySuites. Tough choice indeed.

I think most of us clocked very little BIS time on SQ748.

It was pleasure to finally meet you in person. What a great report you have over there, not to mention your wonderful photos as usual. Looking at your trip reports, I am going to be more adventurous the next time.

Hi Madam Concorde

How are you?

Thank you very much for the kind compliments. I am surprised not to see you on board, I guess next time perhaps I can meet you on board the inaugural flights of SQ's B787-9 and Airbus A350-900.

Cheers
Charles

Great report, thank you for shearing!

Well said sir

FSS Magladene vs SkySuites. Tough choice indeed.

I found the most pretty and young/enthusiastic ones are always in Economy Class......ahhhhh .......

Although it has been 3 days since the event, I still recall the ride and the event often in my head. It was such an outstanding event that SIA did a really good job on presenting, delivering and executing it. The event also linked and re-united many friendships, put a lot of name to faces. I hope other airlines can learn from it and provide more of this kind of celebration flight.

Thanks Sam! Its almost as good as being on the flight itself.
Do you know what will happen to the B747 cockpit crew? Do they carry on flying cargo on the 400Fs or get retrained on the other aircraft in the fleet? If retraining, do they go to a specific type eg B777s?

Great stuff! Looking forward to see from many different perspective on a history making flight like this.

Hi Sam

Thanks for putting your time and effort for this special dedication of the SIA 747. I remember seeing them in AMS a few times.
The 747 has been a wonderfull plane, moments like these are just to bad in aviation history.

Greetings
Marc

A rude shock for them when they use the sidestick controllers ? lol jokes aside, I do hope they continue flying 4-holers, it is fast becoming an elite group of pilots!

Very nice video Sam! I had many great flights on the SQ 744 (LAX-NRT, AKL-SIN, LHR-SIN, HKG-SIN), although in the last few years they were getting really tatty, in the back at least. Shame SQ didn't want to give them a re-fit.

I didn't think the SQ 744 was that tatty at all. May be the purple seat cover gives the whole cabin a darker/more mature look? I think SQ 744 was well maintained, specially F/J class and the lavatory, was always fresh and pleasant to use, thanks to the Singapore girls.
