I Flew Lufthansa's 747-8 To Washington DC

Fri Jun 01, 2012 9:22 pm

Today, I was on Lufthansa's LH416, the first commercial flight of Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental.
The aircraft is nearly full around 600-1000 Euros tickets economy, 3000-4000 Euros business and around 8000-10000 Euros first. With Lufthansa's 45 guests we became part of a history.

I set on the upper deck of the aircraft. The flight from Frankfurt to Washington DC took 7 hours 50 minutes. It was really silence aircraft but my screen is not working

Here you are the flight videos that I have taken with my camera...

Gotta love that extra 747 speed......what would it be in a 333? 8.2 hours or so?

The great history of the 747 continues, 45 years after the first series with the 8-i, probably for 45 more years. You were fortunate to be on that flight. I hope more are sold, not just as freighters and hopefully to some USA based airlines.

Ahhh Lufthansa, this B748 just goes to prove what a great airline they are!! Also, I think their cabin crew are some of the best out there. Very polite, pleasant and do not smile too much (it can get annoying).

The plane looks amazing! Thank you for posting the videos.

Thank you for the videos. I'm quite jealous that you got to fly on it! The 747-8 really is a great looking aircraft, both inside and out. And just by the sound of the video alone, I can tell it's much, much quieter than a 744.

Amazing, a day I'll never forget: the first 748 commercial flight and the reopening of BRU-JFK with a Belgian carrier.

Thanks for the videos, I hope you had a great and comfortable flight

hello. Thanks for sharing. Have you been on the 380 yet? T/O seemed quite quet. How would you compare the sound levels, that is, if tou have flown on the 380. Engine sound reminds me a bit of the 777 on spool up..

Perhaps it appears like that, but in reality it is quite different. Each seat has a huge white privacy divider that goes up around the seat, and I only see one person utilizing it in the OP's video. Having sat in the seat today at IAD, I practically disappeared behind the divider when it was up.

= We will have to agree to disagree  . I was on this flight ... albeit in JCL and took a walk through to F and thought it was just crowded. Also, while the J seats are a VAST improvement of LH's current 10 generation behind J class, the configuration meant you have to watch from playing footsies.

Thanks for sharing.

First class does look narrow indeed! I had the pleasure of watching you guys arrive at IAD. I snapped quite a few photos from the Main Terminal, especially of the cannon salute.

LOL you have a lot of gutts to take the video.

I am impressed. It made me laugh.

The people sleeping in F looked like dead corpses. The passengers in Y looked miserable. The legroom in LH Y is really tight.

The most fun cabin looked to be C. The LH crews are always well groomed and the food in Y is always good.

Boeing aircraft are really noisy.

Excellent videos! Thanks for sharing them. Also, thanks for the confidence of taking the videos on board! I am very shy when it comes to taking photos....

I used to fly LH a lot long haul, but since a change in jobs, I no longer travel with them. I would like to try the new completely flat Business Class, but it looks quite 'intimate' if you don't know the other person sitting next to you?

Like the others have said, I think they could have made a lot more of their First Class. Although it's brand new, it's already behind its competitors.

First class has privacy on demand....if you wish it, raise the privacy screen, if not, enjoy the view....so in that respect much better then what other airlines offer .......sentence to fly in coffins!

Fine by me   I don't fly F that often, so my opinion might be invalid when compared to other F products.

LOL, well put me down as one who likes the "coffins." To me, AF first class is the worst. A continuation of the airport lounge onboard. I don't want to be seen drooling all over their plush seats.

Looks like it was quite busy in business class?

Many of those on the upper deck were invited guests and members from the media flying at company's expanse.

Much of the time was spent Media conferencing. It was interesting to see one conference by LH CEO Franz in German while the other media conferencing by Mts. Elizabeth Lund VP 747 of Boeing was done in English all that happening at the same time in the same cabin. Never saw this before and I have had my share of inaugural flights.

Dr Franz and the Mrs Boeing 747 VP Elizabeth Lund were sitting in F that made 2 guests in F while the 6 others (probably the sleepers) were paying passengers.

I tried myself for Business and even for F to no avail as many of the seats were blocked. There was only one vacant seat in Business on the return flight and I learned from the crew that it was a no-show.

I accessed the flight deck before they closed the flight in Frankfurt. The two men were senior pilots. The flight to IAD had 3 men on the flight deck - the chief of the 747 fleet and I was told by the second flight captains that they had one training pilot along so that made three men instead of two.

The welcome/pre-departure conference/ceremony was held upstairs in the gate lounge. I was there and thougth they could have made it public rather than only for some of the privileged few. There was no special food or buffet for all a la Singapore Airlines inaugurals. Lufthansa was rather skimpy even the inflight gifts were few and cheap looking.

Many of the passengers in Economy had no idea they were on a new airplane type and on an inaugural flight. They did not really seem to care. All they wanted was to get from point A to point B they did not seem to care what airline they were flying on even less what aircraft type. A lot of the little inaugural booklets and brochures were left in the seat pockets after de-boarding the plane - even more so on the return flight - same with the little gift boxes with the magnets. Many just did not care.

I have got heaps of pictures and lots to say. I am planning to do my own detailed pictures report.

Patience !

I was sort of in a rush as I was invited upstairs to see the flight deck at the end of the flight after we got to Frankfurt and before they were closing the flight and the aircraft so I did not get extra... mostly small brochures - I had two of them signed by thee two captains!    Ha!

Not sure if I want to list the spares on fleabay.   Is it really the proper thing to do? If so I will have to do it before the competition comes. I will have to think about it.

I know I want to send some of the paper materials to my Airbus test pilot friends at the test flight center in Toulouse as an exchange for their kindness... and the A-350XWB coming up!!

Way too much so. Thinking of all the fabulous inaugurals we had with Singapore Airlines - all of the first inaugurals were absolutely incredible - Sydney, London Heathrow, Nagoya/Narita, Hong Kong, Paris, Zurich... and then the absolutely wonderful ANA 787 Dreamliner inaugural from Haneda to Frankfurt.... I can't believe such a gigantic and rich airline as Lufthansa dismissed on making this new 747-8i commercial launch a proper inaugural event!!!!

It's very hard to tell the difference between a 744 and this 'new' aircraft.

Those public areas look a bit tight. I would have thought Boeing would try to emulate the grand spaces of the A380.

I liked the idea of the video trip report. Nice one.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.
