Hello airliners.net Community! I have lurked on this site for years enjoying a brilliant variety of Trip Reports. I thought I would give it a try. I will appreciate any comments and constructive criticism. Due to lack of time on my part I plan to let the pictures do most of the talking and I'll caption them for context. I will limit the report to the airport and in flight experiences. Thanks for reading!

DL173
JFK-NRT
747-400
Seat 12A

I arrived at JFK from LAX on a red eye and literally slept the entire way so I don't have any documentation of that experience.

We landed at T2 and I was immediately able to get a shower in the T2 Skyclub. I had several hours to kill so I decided to check out the Oasis lounge in T4. It was a beautiful day at JFK. I snapped a picture from the lounge:

El Al pushing back from T4.

After enjoying some sandwiches and coffee I headed back to T3 to go through security.

The T3 rotunda

Since it was past noon I stopped at the first Skyclub I encountered for a cocktail.

The club on the west side of T3 in the Gates 11-18 area.

Boarding started around 1pm from gate 6. I boarded towards the beginning of the process to take some pictures.

Seat 12A. I enjoy this part of the airplane because the view of the wing and engines is a nice contrast to the scenery below.

12A with video monitor deployed.

Screen view from reclined position.

Seat controls.

Screen retracted.

Another seat view with the pillow. I do appreciate the second smaller pillow.

We had a slight delay leaving the gate. Several announcements were made imploring passengers to pickup their duty free purchases at the door of the aircraft.

Taxi commenced and soon we were rolling down 13R.

View shortly after takeoff.

One of the advantages of 12A!

Initial course.

My preferred IFE.

Short flight today. I think it was actually longer in the end. I find these moving map figures to fluctuate.

Beverage service commenced. I ordered the champagne.

Appetizer, soup, and salad. My experience on previous flights had the salad served after the soup and appetizer.

Tasty salmon and slaw.

Main: Braised beef shortrib. Very enjoyable. I forgot to snap a picture of the fruit and cheese course.

Chilled junmai daiginjo after dinner. Getting excited about visiting NRT!

Time for a movie. Fantastic selection. I am a huge Tarantino fan so when I saw this one I had to indulge.

Mid flight snack. A cold plate of chicken breast, artichoke heart, and lobster salad (among other items). All very enjoyable.

Location after a nice snooze. These beds beat out the 777 IMHO. A little less confined. I find both to be excellent.

Approaching Hokkaido.

Pre-arrval meal.

Afternoon over the coast of Chiba Prefecture.

We had a smooth landing on16R and short taxi to gate 17. I had about 1.5 hours until the flight to SIN boarded so I headed to the Skyclub in the North Satellite. I didn't get any pictures from this visit but have a few from a later visit on this trip. The view from the Skyclub in the South Satellite is the money shot anyway.

DL621
NRT-SIN
777-200LR
Seat 6B

Boarding for SIN started about 5:30 local time.

View form 6B. A good seat if you can't get 7A or 7D. There is a little extra privacy from the closet to your left.

The preferred 7A.

After a powerful takeoff from 16R the beverage service commenced.

The champagne and snack mix.

The "mixed grill" entree consisting of lamb, beef and chicken. The smoked scallops are also nice.

You will notice 2 glasses of red wine on the tray. The Purser on this flight was so thorough and enthusiastic that when I ordered red wine he insisted I try them both. He wrote on the table linen what each was and placed them over their labels. he came back to see which I preferred and kept the glass topped up. I really appreciate this kind of touch.

Dessert

At this point in the journey I was pretty tired so I don't have any more pictures of the flight. We arrived at Changi shortly after midnight and landed on 02L (I think). The windows on the plane fog up immediately and you know you're in SIN!

My travels this time out also took me to TPE and ICN on Delta. I have included some photos with captions of those experiences.

A snack at the Skyclub in the NRT T1 North Wing South Satellite

I know you can't really see it in this resolution but this is my first time spotting a 787. JAL landing on 16R from the Skyclub in the NRT South Satellite.

Yeah, I fixed myself a martini.

Upper deck on the way to TPE. I was on 73K for this one.

PDB

Another view of the PDB.

Beverage service NRT-TPE.

"Champagne supper" NRT-TPE.

"Champagne supper" NRT-TPE.

Seat 72A TPE-NRT.

Breakfast TPE-NRT.

Air France Salon Lounge NRT.

Air France Salon Lounge NRT.

Snack and wine, Air France Salon Lounge NRT.

My ride to ICN arriving from GUM.

A PDB on the way to ICN.

A nice curry dish NRT-ICN.

Airplane for ICN-NRT being towed to the gate.

Awaiting takeoff at ICN.

A look inside the cabin of the 75J ICN-NRT. This is a different plane that I am used to seeing when I've been to SPN or PUS. Perhaps someone can verify that?

Beverage service ICN-NRT.

Brunch ICN-NRT.

DL284
NRT-LAX
747-400
Seat 77K

View from 77K.

Flight representation.

Beverage service NRT-LAX

Opted for the Japanese meal leaving NRT as I find them of high quality.

Japanese meal NRT-LAX.

Japanese meal NRT-LAX, salmon main.

Over California approaching LAX.

Downwind for LAX.

This concludes my images of my Delta flight experiences. I was traveling light so I did not have a proper camera on this trip and that explains the marginal quality of the photos. I probably got carried away here with the volume of pictures so if you made it this far I'm impressed. Thanks for looking.

Outstanding first report, OWTF! On the contrary, there's no such thing as too many pictures, and yours served this fine report justice!

I look forward to reading future reports.

One suggestion I might make is to throw in more of your opinions on the service, both soft and hard products. It was nice to hear about your purser that went above and beyond, but I'm curious how the other flights fared.

Thanks again!

Cheers,
Cameron

Great photos from your trip! This report gave great detail of a ultra-long haul offering of Delta's J Class offering. Food looks pretty good, and I like the bigger wine glasses that they are now offering!

I didn't realize the flight time from JFK-NRT would be so short as 12 hours - that's amazing! From MSP, I think its 13?

Best,

Matthew

This is impressive! The more pictures you can include, the better. I have flown JFK-NRT/HND and HND/NRT-JFK several times on AA 777-200ER's. I read an article about ultra long haul flying. The airplane that made this route possible was the 747SP. It is shorter, so it is lighter, can fly higher, giving it a longer range. Pan Am started JFK-NRT service with it in 1976 (I think they might have still been using HND at that time). The 747-400 came out, allowing the same range with a full complement of passengers.
Now you can do it on a 777-200ER/300ER/200LR every day.
I like your picture of LAX when on your approach pattern. I like flying into LAX because either side of the plane, (assuming you're by a window!) you get a great view. On the left side you fly over SFO, and downtown Los Angeles. On the right side, you get a beautiful view of the coast and LAX before you turn onto finals.
Please keep reports like this coming.
Have you kissed a 777 today?

Delta's catering looks pretty decent. Good compared to American, for sure. Nice to see the new BE section on the B744.

What a great trip! Wonderful report as well.
Love the cozy upper deck on the 747-400! Even better with the flat bed
Many thanks for sharing.

Agree!!
There's something about LAX, flying into, out off, changing plane, walking in the termianl etc.
Airport and terminals are a mess but there is a story and some meaningful feeling of it.
Maybe it gives me the "new HOPE" feeling everytimes I'm there.....
Let's just blame it on yields.

Thanks for the feedback Cameron. I think my haste to figure out how to get pictures up caused me to get skimpy on the details.

Hi Matthew. I think in reality the flight was in the 13 hr range and the moving map system was a little wonky as we first started out. It think it was a light wind day with a fairly north routing.

I agree triple7. On a clear day it can make the LA basin actually look like a pleasant place to live! Normally we're into "June gloom" with fog/low clouds in the AM this time of year. Not so much yet this year, yet, allowing for great vistas on approach.

Thanks for your comments ghifty and nethkt.

It's a solid seat arrangement. Especially upstairs. You have the same number of lavs (2) and the same number of FAs (2 also, I think) with fewer passengers.

Nice TR!!!! This is what TRs should be. Not the endless pics of garbage like check in counters and toilets and transcripts of boring conversations with the crew.

I dont understand why DL and PMCO serve Breakfast when you arrive in Japan in the late afternoon. AA and PMUA always serve meals that are appropriate to your arrival not your departure city. Who wants eggs and french toast at 5pm???

WOWWW the food offerings look amazing!

BA should take a leaf out of DL's book for their J class catering.

Hi onlywaytofly

Thanks for the interesting report, the great pictures and your insights.

I must say, I am rather surprised. American carriers generally have quite a reputation for being utter crap, but I have to say, from your pictures at least Delta has certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Those seats facing the window look very nice and comfortable, I imagine one has quite a bit of privacy.

I particularly like the design and material of the meal trays. Did you by any chance notice if they're made of real wood?

Thanks for posting in any case.

Cheers,
William

Delta consistently seems to be the best U.S. airline out there. Wish airlines like United would catch up.

I have not been in UA C/J for 10 years so I cannot compare. I will note that DL is marketed as a hybrid First/Biz cabin while UA has truue F so it's probably not a direct comparison.

Thanks for your comments William. The trays are plastic. They do have a nice no-slip coating that is helpful when you hit the inevitable bumpy air over the pacific.

It is. You're probably used to the 75A, which had 16 cradle seats in C.

Actually whoever served you on this flight was not following standard procedure. On most DL flights in BusinessElite the salad is served after the appetizer/soup.

Very nice TR, sir!!

I have yet to get the chance to ride on a refurb'd 744 but when I am able to put some days off together i'll be doing my classic "Long way to Hawaii" flight!! That's ATL-JFK-NRT-HNL-LAX-ATL. I'm a nerd, I know...
