Aloha Hawaii: CDG-LAX-HNL-LAX-CDG (AF/DL): Part 2

Thu Jun 14, 2012 7:44 pm

This Trip Report is dedicated to my dear Mum who sadly died from leukemia last April. I really enjoyed flying with her...

So, it was time to go to Hawaii, now...

We woke up early in the morning to get our Delta flight to Honolulu, I was so excited!!!

FLIGHT 2: LAX-HNL with Delta Air Lines

FLIGHT DL2365
Dep schedule: 8.45 am--Actual: 9.00 am
Arrival: 11.31am-----Actual: 11.10 am
Aircraft: Boeing 767-300
Reg: N143DA
Seat: 27F/27G (Y)
Flight duration: 5 hours and 10 min

LAX airport was under heavy renovation, so it was not very pleasant...

Then we boarded the plane. It was fresh, immaculate.
A shame DL didn't install new bins though.
Each seat had AVOD.

Views of the cabin:

Then we took off, and we were immediately flying over the Pacific Ocean...

Wing view:

During the flight:
http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t451/LY777/P1030254.jpg

The service during the flight was typical for a domestic US flight: free drinks and crackers, as well as food for sale.

The flight was rather smooth, except during descent as we went through a cumulonimbus cloud.

HNL airport is amazing. We feel on holiday as soon as we are at the airport.
To pick up our luggage, we went through a magnificient patio, and guess what: it was very warm and sunny!

Then, we took a taxi to our hotel which was located at Waikiki...

Here is the view from our room:

Amazing Hilton lagoon:

The weather was gorgeous during our stay in Hawaii, with warm temperatures (not too hot, in the mid-80s), sunny skies with some very brief showers...This is definitely a very good place to visit.
I hope you enjoyed!

Very nice report. (Sorry to hear about your Mom; mine has leukemia as well, but she has managed with it for nearly 17 years, although declining steadily).

I don't know if I would enjoy 10-abreast in the 777. I've flown the LY 777 to TLV with 9-abreast. That was manageable on a 12-hour flight.

I am taking my kids to Hawaii for the first time next month. I'm very excited. We are skipping Honolulu (except for the airport, obviously) and connecting immediately to Maui since we are staying for only one week. We are flying nonstop from JFK-HNL, then HNL-JHM.

Thanks for the enjoyable report!

Hi
Thanks for sharing! Truly amazing pictures of Hawaii. Actually I'm thinking about going there as well in August as I found a dirt cheap KL/DL combo from WAW for 700€

Can't wait to read the next part!

Cheers, Maurice

That's great! You will certainly enjoy Hawaii. Maui seems nice also, I didn't have time to visit it. There is more wind in Maui than in Oahu though

That's cheap indeed!

Thanks. My mother had a very severe form of leukemia, called plasma cell leukemia (a severe form of myeloma); in that form, life expectancy doesn't exceed 2 or 3 years at best. My mother only survived 3 months...

I loved Hawaii. I visited Honolulu, Maui and Kaui. But would like to go back to visit Molokai, Lahai and the big island.

Sorry to hear about your mother. La vie n'est pas facile. Glad you enjoyed your trip.

Thanks for sharing. Downtown Honolulu does look like Anytown, USA. Quite boring. But I suppose you don't go to Hawai'i for that. The beaches look great.

Too bad DL's seats are not very photogenic. They look like the seats on a very old bus I took in rural China a few years back. I'm sure they're comfy, though I don't understand the obsession in the US with leather seats, esp on long haul. It's not real leather, and even if it was, it wouldn't be good leather anyway. I'm glad most airlines where I live have fabric seats in Y.

Cheers

How do Maui and Kaui are compared to Oahu?

I agree with you, they don't look so good IMO. But DL has made a lot of improvements concerning their cabins. I have seen photos of newly refurbished 763ERs, they look GREAT!

Rather disappointing downtown Honolulu:

There really is nothing really special about downtown Honolulu. It is just a typical business district found in many U.S. cities. I even think Chinatown isn't too interesting for tourists unless you like old buildings. The Capital district is much more interesting history and architectual wise.

Quoting LY777 (Thread starter):
Iolani Palace, located near Downtown:

The picture is of Ali'iolani Hale, not Iolani Palace. This is the home of the Hawaii Supreme Court and State Judiciary administration. Iolani Palace is across the street from Ali'iolani Hale.

Yes, this is the building shown as the 5-0 headquarters in the new series. The original series had the 5-0 headquarters in Iolani Palace.

I eagerly await part 3 to see what else you did on your visit to my home island.
