London - Jamaica - London In BA Club World

Fri Jun 29, 2012 4:11 pm

After many thoughts of doing a trip report; this is actually my first one. I had ten days off work so I decided to go and visit family in Jamaica and then take the chance to accompany my Grandmother back to the UK on her annual summer hols. I should point out, that I am missing many photos and videos that were taken on my Blackberry; owing to an unfortunate Sea water and Blackberry incident.

Flight BA 2263
18 jun 2012
777-200
Seat 2K

Updated Departure entrance hall at http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q559/ba2262/IMG_0473.jpg

My trip was to be non-stop to KIN from LGW on one of BAs three class 772. I did not need to select my seat early (and pay the £60 fee) so I checked-in in on-line 24hrs before my flight and collected my ticket at the airport. Once at the North terminal, I was able to print off my own luggage labels but the sticking process proved too challenging for me and I actually wanted some human interaction so I went to the Club World Check-in desk and completed the process there.

After checking in; I moved the short distance to the dedicated security area and then took the lift up to the Galleries Club lounge. There I took the chance to take a shower, eat breakfast and catch up on the news both printed and online. The lounge itself is large and spacious and was busy without feeling crowded.

After an hour in the lounge I made my way to my gate; general boarding had already started and so I had to wait a few minutes before going on board.

My seat was 2K, window seat but facing backwards. Looked a tad narrow stuck in the corner but it was comfortable all the same. Once seated I had a choice between Champagne, Wine or Orange Juice - I took the Champagne.

Pushback was delayed for a few minutes as they reconciled baggages and then we were on our way.

Curried Chicken Main Course (a tad bland).

Dessert was a very nice selection of Strawberries and Cream but after 1 glass of Champagne and 3 glasses of Rioja - I was out for the count and so missed out on dessert.

We arrived in KIN a few minutes behind schedule and there was only one other commercial airliner on the ground. A Spirit airlines A320, that was preparing for departure. Immigration, baggage collection and customs was uneventful and I was in to the Car hire hall within 45 minutes of landing.

Check-in was again done online but you still needed to go to the check-in desk at the airport in KIN; which was unfortunately not dedicated to Club World customers alone as a number of passengers had disregarded the sign and were seen unpacking and repacking their bags to meet the required weight. This delayed the process somewhat but once they had removed themselves. I was able to check-in both myself and my Grandmother and then proceed through security, immigration and on to the lounge.

Bording was well ordered but there were some 34 passengers requiring wheelchair assistance, which must be a record, said one of the staff jokingly. My Grandmother took the Window seat 4A and so I had to settle for the aisle seat 4B .

http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q559/ba2262/IMG_0449.jpg
I had learnt my lesson and so only had 1 glass of Champagne this time.

http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q559/ba2262/IMG_0454.jpg
There was work taking place on parts of the taxiway so the pilot had to do a turnaround at the end of the runway.

http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q559/ba2262/IMG_0455.jpg
We took off after a short delay and headed back, with what seemed like a full aircraft, to the UK.

Dessert.

Although it was a night flight; I struggled to sleep as I would often wakeup sweating - some complimentary pyjamas might be necessary, next time.

http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q559/ba2262/IMG_0462.jpg
Breakfast - a sausage burger was also available.

We arrived in London a few minutes behind schedule and despite news stories of nightmare immigration queues; I was out of the airport within an hour of landing. All in all, an enjoyable trip and two enjoyable flights.

Nice report, although I must say, the Club World doesn't look particularly amazing. I quite like the seats though! Nice pictures of Jamaica too!

Hey JM02

Great report! Its unfortunate what happened to your blackberry, im sure you had many great photos. Nice to see a report about KIN on BA (dont think I ever seen one before), its also great that we have another Caribbean report! They are quite rare on these forums. I posted one not too long ago, also on BA but to ANU and then onto MNI on SVG air.
Please let me know... If you know this is the end of the world, Let me know... If you know the truth...

Wow....KIN airport seems to have changed significantly since my last visit back in 2005! Jetways and everything!

Just agreeing. From reading trip reports (unfortunately not from personal recent experience) BA Club World and First both look good but seam to lack the amazement factor. Maybe thats the current BA policy, don't do anything amazingly new or revolutionary just have a good standard product.

Great Trip Report on your visit to Jamaica. Not bad at all for a first effort.

Seem the Blackberry forgot that it couldn't swim.....Lol

Looks nothing like the real '' curry ''.

West Coast of Jamaica.

West ? Based on the routing BA normally take into KIN from LGW I would say either North or East.

Quoting JM02 (Thread starter):
YS Falls.

Haven't been there in quite a while. One of the best location to cool out in Jamaica.

Thats quite a lot indeed !

BA meal service appears to be good.

Again a very interesting Trip Report. Thanks for sharing.

Both MBJ and KIN have undergone quite extensive revamps and expansion since then. Pretty soon both airports will also get new control towers.

Thanks for the compliments.

KIN has changed very much for the better but they could do with more and bigger lifts and some walkways too but it did seem very quiet. The staff at all levels were very professional, even the Customs staff  .

The BA product is adequate and I guess they are happy with it as it is not expected to change for the 787 or A380. I guess it helps that they also have a First Class product but not to Jamaica. Would be intresting to compare BA's business product to one of the Middle Eastern Airlines.

You are correct - apologies for my navigational embarresment - we entered and departed Jamaica over the North coast, then NW over Cuba. In previous years we flew down over Haiti but the routing appears to have changed.

Great report! Is it just me or does their linen layout for the meal service look rather sloppy?

Also is it true that LGW Club World flights aren't as good as LHR Club World? I know the hard product is the same, but I meant from the soft product point of view, i.e. amenities, catering, crew, etc

The routing through Port-au-Prince's airspace is what I am more familiar with where BA's LGW-KIN-LGW ( and LGW-MBJ-LGW when they flew it ) operation is concerned. I for the life of me could never understand why they always chose that kind of routing over the years. One would think their dispatchers would rather plan a more northerly routing for them from KIN, since they ultimately ended up traversing Miami's airspace, even after heading East through PAP's FIR. But it is very interesting to know that nowadays they enter/depart over Jamaica's north coast as opposed to the eastern end.

Hi JM02 !
nice to read BA trip report ... I respect BA for innovation in the implementation of new forms of seat ... and for decent service in all classes ... I've always had good experience with them, except sometimes the food is "to british" heheheheh just kidding ... thanks stipica

Very nice. We don't see too much of Jamaica so that was great,.

Glad to see BA is achieving nice loads and keeping an important link open.

Thought the food could have been a little better although certainly not too shabby!

I did think the food was very British and actually less adventurous than what you would find in Economy; where you are more likely to get a main course meal, reflective of the destination. The onboard snack bar was not as well stocked on the return journey, as there were no sandwiches, yoghurts or fruits. It was more like a fat kids cupboard, with crisps, chocolates and lots of wine.

The LHR Club World lounge is a better product because you have access to a 20 seat cinema and Elemis Travel Spa as for the staff; they were polite and helpful.

Would have taken more pictures but the whole trip report thing, felt a bit clandestine, lol

Great TR. I just took BA CLub World on a 777 too and I was so NOT impressed. The amenity kit is something that one would find in economy if that. The food was very minimal and tasted awful and I felt like I was in a coffin in the backwards window seat. Seriously BA JCL is no better than most YCL flights on other carriers. I was so disappointed especially for the large price charged. They really need to step up their product as it is NOT competitive. Great pics of Jamaica too!

The backwards facing seat, takes some getting used to, as I have not travelled like than since my one and only trip on a VC-10. My biggest complaint with the seat is having to step over someone's leg every time when you are sitting by the in the corner.
