EK J-class (A380): HKG-BKK-HKG

Sun Jul 01, 2012 2:56 pm

Route: HKG-BKK
Depart: 22:20
Arrive: 00:05(+1)
Carrier: EK
Equipment: A388
Seat: 11k
Class: J

Trip report video:

EK is one of several carriers operating fifth freedom flights on this route - fares also seem to be cheaper than TG and CX. Having tried EK once before (in Y class) on another fifth freedom route (SYD-CHC) I thought I would go with them again. This would be my third flight on an A380 (after QF and LH). I chose seat 11K (window) for the out and inbound segments.

The lounge is ‘open air style’ but you couldn’t hear too much noise from the gate areas below. The food and service were very good and the lounge was a about ½ full. After a pre-departure meal, it was time to head to the gate.
Pre-departure meal

Boarding was orderly and commenced on time. The J cabin was about a 1/3 full.

After the meal service, I made a trip to the bar area.

Summary and conclusion: Overall an uneventful flight with EK’s very good hard and soft product.

Route: BKK-HKG
Scheduled Departure: 13:45
Actual Departure: 17:30
Scheduled Arrive: 17:45
Actual Arrive: 21:30
Carrier: EK
Equipment: A388
Seat: 11k
Class: J

Trip report video:

When I checked in I was informed the flight would be three hours late as there was some sort of mechanical issue leaving Dubai. Luckily I did not have a connection later that day out of HKG.

Unlike in HKG, the lounge is not ‘open air style’ but in an enclosed area with a view of a courtyard below. The food was very good and the lounge was almost empty.

Thai beer

After a pre-departure meal and about five hours later it was time to head to the gate for a delayed departure.
Pre-departure refreshment

The flight was further delayed as three passengers were a no show and their luggage had to be unloaded.

Time for meal service
Main course: beef
On approach

Summary and conclusion: Once again EK has a very good hard and soft product but I would deduct marks for this flight due to the initial delay.

Thanks for the report.

I find the fruit appetizers on both flights a strange choice considering the day of time the flights depart.

Maybe that's a Middle Eastern thing?

Great report. Had a good laugh seeing an El Al and Iran Air parked next to each other.

Thanks for the report!

it is obvious that Emirates has downgraded the catering on this HKG to BKK flight. I guess it is permanent now.

EK actually used to serve a two-course meal on these HKG to BKK flights. There is a choice of appetizers, and then three choices of main courses. I guess it is just now an one tray meal.

But with the bar in the back, the shorter meal service will allow people to have more times to mingle in the back.
But I feel bad for the folks who travel all the way from Dubai to HKG because EK only serves a breakfast on the DXB to BKK flight (same BKK to DXB).
