I was going to make the Motherfokker joke, but it's been done more then enough.
For this trip the idea was a week in Amsterdam on a budget. Having found a cheap fare on Delta.com for Bristol to Amsterdam and a cheap hotel that didn't look too bad. The idea was I could use flight times to get two days of sightseeing. It also added a new airline and type. In fact this was my first time on a legacy airline. All my previous flights have been with Low Costs or Charters.
Being on the early flight meant another hideously early start
Another uneventful drive to Bristol Airport (the caravaners that clog the M5 on summer weekends were still in bed). I walked from the long stay to the car park and arrived to find no queue at the self service check in (but huge queues for Easyjet and Ryanair bag drops). Slight embarrassment at security when I forgot to take my liquid bag out prior to them going through the scanner. After the telling off bag and liquids were sent through the scanner again in the same tray. To me that doesn't seem to make a difference! After all that I didn't have long to wait in the public area (until this trip I had zero status and miles and still have sod all!) before boarding was called at gate 10 which is one of the holding pens in the new walkway structure. Thankfully not long to wait in the pen before boarding began.
Fokker 70 PH-KZG
06:10 – 08:25 (Local)
(1st flight on the Fokker 70, 1st on PH-KZG, 23rd Flight overall)
Ryanair and Easy
The first thing I noticed about my seat was that the window view wasn't great consisting of mostly wing and engine but it was certainly better then the windowless seat behind me. A passenger in the row opposite me then started kicking off at the stewardess because he'd been charged for excess baggage. The stewardess told him that if he didn't pipe down he'd be thrown off the aircraft.
A pre-recorded safety demo was done in English and Dutch as the engines started. And I must say they sounded very good!
Take off Video
Take off was from Runway 27 on the BADIM SID which took us over the city of Bristol before following the Severn estuary to join the L9 Airway towards London. It also clouded over (Raining on the Olympics?)
Bristol is down there
Severn heading into the distance
Once the seatbelt sign was off the stewardess had a chat with the problematic passenger and took the complaint.
About halfway through the service sandwiches and drinks were served and the British flight crew announced a cruise of 31000ft.
What's this? Ashtray?
We were soon descending and the clouds lifted a bit giving views of ships in the North Sea
Crossing the Dutch Coast
Landing at Amsterdam was on Runway 06 and as a result pulled right off the runway and into the Fokker Farm.
The buses soon arrived and most passengers disembarked. One thing I thought was nice was the captain came out to bid us farewell too. Though one families kid wouldn't leave the plane and just stood screaming in the doorway while her Mother was trying to carry pram and the kid's baby sibling down the stairs. Next thing the girl was picked up by the captain who carried her down to her waiting Mother.
The bus took a couple of minutes to reach the terminal, a short line at passport control and I was in the Arrivals Plaza. I bought a train ticket and headed into the city.
I can't say the hotel was that great and worryingly it seemed to have the same curtains as many 'shop windows' in De Wallen.
I arrived back at Schiphol about 3 hours before my flight and headed up to the Panorama Terrace.
FID by the Terrace includes registrations.
Small, Medium and Large
I think this one was going to EXT, but BE are expensive and as a result it's cheaper to drive to BRS and park there! Still would have been nice to not have an hour's drive home!
I grabbed some tasty chicken wings in Dakotas
F100 Flight Deck
I then headed downstairs to collect my boarding pass from the machines, headed through passport control and then onto Gate D6 for the Fokker Farm. I was directed through the Nudiscope which then promptly broke down! So I had a bonus frisking (as did the rest of the line!)
I moved my seat forward away from the engine on the return.
I did like these tables in the holding pen. Much nicer then the usual benches.
About this point a large group arrived and started queuing at the gate (despite the fact that boarding hadn't been announced at this point), of course then other start queuing as well, think it must be the EZY/RYR mentality!
The bus pulled up and boarding began, and I still ended up on the first bus along with those that had been queuing for 20 mins!
Fokker 70 PH-KZL
20:57 – 21:00 (Local)
(2nd flight on the Fokker 70, 1st on PH-KZL, 24th Flight overall)
Back in the Farm, shortly after I took this I spotted lightning from those clouds
I gained a seat mate with the second bus
Departure was about 2 minutes late though with the wind having swung round since the previous day the departure was from Runway 24 so another short taxi!
Fokker on the Roof
Take off video
Can anyone ID this airport?
Stylish headwear is not exclusive to Finns (though lacking hair means I need a hat in hot weather!)
At this point my still camera ran out of Electricity, I'd forgotten to take the UK to continental plug adapter so both my phone and camera were now flat. I did try a still picture with the video camera but the results were not good. Its a shame because I had a great view of London, the lit up Olympic Park and Heathrow. Descent was started shortly after passing Heathrow and was the usual route over Bath for Runway 27. During the descent was the only time the flight deck were heard in flight with a very long speech welcoming visitors and residents alike to Bristol. Which was then repeated in full in Dutch! He finally finished just before the ILS intercept over Bath!
Some very heavy braking on landing to allow us to exit the runway at FX and not have to go right down to the end and we pulled onto stand 21 (Gate 10 on the other side of the wall). A short queue at passport control and I was outside and walking back to the car. Another uneventful drive with a brief stop at Taunton Deane services to order a pizza from the takeaway across the road from my flat so it would be ready when I got in.
Next trip is unknown. I have no flights booked at all!. I do have a hotel booked in Leipzig for next year's Wave-Gotik-Treffen. Will probably fly BRS-BER and get the train for that. Though I am tempted to try and get the IB A340
Hope you enjoyed and I hope to get another TR in at some point!
