Short Escapades With Garuda Indonesia

Tue Sep 04, 2012 10:01 am

Hi there folks,

This is my 1st TR at a.net  . Just want to share my experience during weekend-getaway to CGK with the recently voted the "World's Best Regional Airlines" a.k.a. Garuda Indonesia (GA).

Arrival at SIN T3 building has never been more pleasant. It is indeed a well designed airport terminal with all the modern amenities and look. Luckily the check-in counters of GA were empty and they almost gave me a "private check-in" feeling.

FIDS at Changi T3

Changi's efficiency has all the while been praised as one of the best in the world. True enough that 3 minutes were all it took me to clear the immigration and off I went to explore the airside terminal building.

Not forgetting the greens...and I mean it! These are real trees!! I realised it after I accidentally plucked one of the leaves

Plenty of comfy seats around...definitely very user friendly airport. Check out the view too

As time was ticking fast, it was time to head down to the gate.

Ahhh, the aircraft from CGK just landed....and we were 45 minutes away to our ETD.

Boarding commenced 5 minutes prior to ETD. Not bad...quite a fast turn-around time. Pax were greeted by a male and female cabin crew at the door in their signature style (I will show this so called "signature style" a little later at the Safety Video Demo shot). Not long after, I was seated comfortably toward the rear side of the aircraft. Comfortable legroom for a 5'9"-er like me

Reading materials on board this B737-800NG. They have AVOD on each PTV and with the full service offered on this short 1hr30mins flight, that just put all US airlines at shame...hehehe

Cabin crew were busy distributing something....

Welcome drink it was! I seriously cant remember the last time I was offered a welcome drink on board...not even on SQ. So, kudos to GA.

Giant SQs all around us...it really made us feel so puny sitting in a B738

Safety demonstration video...but hang on, does GA have 777s now??? Hmmm...

Now, this is the "Signature Style" of welcoming pax on board GA flights.

The aircraft was finally pushed back, and took off approx.10 minutes late due to runway congestion at SIN

IFE was turned on immediately after take-off. A wide selection of blockbuster movies, short features, news, and audio channels were offered.

The flight was almost full, with just a couple of empty seats at the very last row

Hot meal choices were either stewed beef with mashed potato or indonesian style fried rice with chicken. I opted for the beef which turned out to be quite good although the mashed potato was rather dry and sweet for my liking. Overall, it was good and I would score it 8/10. There was a great selection of beverages and wines too. Unfortunately, I am not a big fan of alcohol

Given the short flight duration, I really admire the full service offered by GA. The crew moved and worked efficiently throughout, but most importantly they serve all passengers with smiles. This is something that's hard to come by nowadays esp with the cost-cutting exercise across all major airlines.

3 days passed-by quickly and it was time to head back to SIN. GA offers 8 flights/day to SIN from CGK and surprisingly almost all flights were fully booked on that particular Sunday, leaving me no option but to take the early morning flight at 07.25am.

CGK T2 - where all international flights depart from. The check-in area was packed, however once I passed through the immigration, it was a different scenario altogether. CGK airport is also one of the very few airports in the world that maintains traditional design in its architecture.

There isn't a great selection of Duty Free shops, however there are plenty of lounges and you dont have to fly business or first in order to go in to the lounges. I noticed that the lounges admit the majority of platinum or titanium credit card holders of major banks. Interesting indeed....something that we dont get to see at other airports.

I'm not sure if it was foggy or smoggy but the view from the glass window wasn't clear at all

The flight was on time and again a non Boeing Sky Interior plane was used for this short flight. I actually had been hoping to sit in one of those newer B738s...oh well, maybe better luck next time

Immaculate service from GA with its welcome drink again

A more pleasing-to-the-eyes set of crew on this flight than the inbound flight I took 3 days earlier...hehehe

Lion's 60th aircraft special livery was queuing behind us for take-off

Soon after take-off, the cabin crew was busy pushing the meal carts. Again, 2 choices of hot meal were offered that morning; western style omellete with grilled tomato & sausage OR Indonesian style "lontong" breakfast. Lontong is actually a type of compressed bloated rice. It is also widely available in other South East Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia.

The meal was very tasteful and it ended my trip to Indonesia with a desire to go back again in the near future. It was truly an enjoyable experience to fly with Garuda Indonesia and I would have no hesitation to choose to fly with GA again. I admire the progress that GA has made over the last 5 years compared to my dreadful flight in 2000 when I flew across 3 continents to Europe from Australia with them. World's Best Regional Airlines 2012? You bet!

Thanks for reading my inaugural TR and keep the comments flyin' in!

Cheers
JL

Hi groomyjl,
First of all, welcome to the forum and congratulations on publishing your inaugural trip report.

Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):
It is indeed a well designed airport terminal with all the modern amenities and look.

Certainly is spacious and the provision of green spaces, butterfly houses and fish ponds make it very pleasant. I am not a great fan of their choice in carpets, though. LOL

Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):
Pax were greeted by a male and female cabin crew at the door in their signature style

The courtesy and welcoming offered by SE Asian crew is really something when compared to the often disinterested glances you might get on some European carriers.

Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):
They have AVOD on each PTV and with the full service offered on this short 1hr30mins flight,

This is really impressive and goes a long way to explaining the airline's improvement in ranking.

Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):
Hot meal choices were either stewed beef with mashed potato or Indonesian style fried rice with chicken.

You would be lucky to get a cold snack on many other airlines. Well done GA for offering something more substantial. The presentation, while simple, is appealing.

Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):
CGK airport is also one of the very few airports in the world that maintains traditional design in its architecture.

I like it. With some of the modern "international" architecture it can be difficult to know what country you are in sometimes.

Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):
I'm not sure if it was foggy or smoggy but the view from the glass window wasn't clear at all

Was it humidity breaking up the sun's rays, perhaps, given that it was an early flight? I know that if their are even the smallest of scratches on the window and the sun is low, they seem to be magnified.

Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):
World's Best Regional Airlines 2012? You bet!

They have certainly come a long way since the days when they were banned in the EU. Let us hope that the improvement is maintained over time.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Hi Roy/Quokka,

Thanks for dropping by. I'm still learning and getting used to the available functions in this forum. Therefore, pardon me if my reply is just short and sweet...LOL. I'm still trying to figure out how you replied me by quoting my sentences...hmmm

Re: Changi's choice of carpet, I reckon it's cool...very designer's look.

Yes, Garuda has come a long way within such a short span of time. With this consistent improvement in place, I have no doubt that they will attain 5* star airlines status soon. It'll be even more interesting to see their progress when their order for 777s start arriving next year. I read in other forums that the 777s will be equipped with interesting advanced features and will debut their First Class too. Let's wait and see then

As long as they don't have 10 across in economy. One of Skytrax's rules for star rating is that they will never give 5* to any airline that has 10 across on a 777.

Hi JL,

very nice first report, well done! GA has also impressed my on a CGK-SIN flight last year. Here's the report:

3x Asian Quality: CGK-SIN-HKT-BKK On GA, FD & PG (by PlaneHunter Mar 27 2012 in Trip Reports)

Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):

Welcome drink it was! I seriously cant remember the last time I was offered a welcome drink on board...not even on SQ. So, kudos to GA.

Very nice, I didn't get that.

Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):

Not yet, 10 frames are on order.

At least you had a plane with PTVs - numerous 738s in the fleet don't have any, but those are mostly used on domestic flights.

Hi groomyjl

Congratulations on your 1st A.net trip report. Nice report on GA

Glad that you enjoyed your flight onboard GA. Certainly GA has come a long way since the days of EU bans, and seems their tireless effort to improve had been sucessful so far, with the 'Most improving airline' (2010) and Best regional airline this year.

Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):
Welcome drink it was! I seriously cant remember the last time I was offered a welcome drink on board...not even on SQ

I think GA is the last few airlines in the world to serve welcome drinks in Y class. Well done to them
Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):
Indonesian style "lontong" breakfast.

I had this meal on my CGK-SYD flight as well, one of the better Y class meals I've ever tasted.

I hoped you enjoyed your visit in Indonesia as much as your pleasant experience on board GA.
Thanks for sharing.

That's strange. I think "welcome drink" is GA's standard for all international flights

I think these non PTV 738s will soon or eventually be phased out. They're not here to stay for long esp when all the 738s orders arrive.

Agree. The presentation may be not that appealing, but the taste is well above average for this dish.

Hey,

Welcome!
Good to see a TR and pics on GA.
Thanks!

Absolutely! It has been ages / ancient history that SQ offered this in Y.

Meals for flights below 2 hours is a nightmare rush for crew on any airline.
Really admire them serving hot meal with choices and drinks too.
Don't expect this when flying in Europe or the US.
Somehow we are really privileged to have such level of inflight service in Y still in our region.
Pray it will still continue!

Hi, JL! Welcome as tripreporter. And you have a good start here with GA. Great service all around
I must admit, the terminal in SIN looks fantastic.

A quick question; what camera did you use in this report? The pictures come out quite 'grainy'. Maybe that's a point to look at for your future reports, but still I really liked yours.

Can't agree more. It feels bland now to try other airlines from non-SE Asia...with the exception of a few from Mid East and North Asia maybe.

It's not the camera...it's the extreme compression of the photo from 2MB+ to 50kB/photo. I will take note of the advice and improve in my future trip reports. Thanks

Hi JL,

Thank you for this nice TR. I think a lot of people would agree with you about Changi T3 - its such a pleasure to use and I always look forward to arriving there.

You report is making me really look forward to flying GA from SYD - CGK and then various internal routes next month. Management has done a lot to pull GA up from where it was previously, and their product looks great.

Cheers,

Shaun

Hi Shaun, thanks for stopping by and sorry for the late reply. I just returned from another trip  . Yes, you will be pleasantly surprised by the service offered by GA esp on SYD-CGK sector which I did last year. I'm thinking if I should post that TR instead now...hmmm...

Any takers?
