JFK-BCN-JFK On AA (Sadly) Part 1 100+ Photos

Sun Sep 16, 2012 2:40 am

Hello and welcome to my rather long and amazing trip report! Thanks in advance for reading and I loved taking the photos.

Background: We had booked a 7 night cruise on the NCL Epic cruising the Mediterranean Sea exploring the beautiful ports of Naples, Rome, Naples/ Pisa, Marseille and Cannes all departing from the amazing city of Barcelona. This was a trip I was waiting 5 years for and I could not believe when it was here.

Booking: We had multiple options to get to BCN. Being from JFK we can either go JFK-BCN-JFK on Delta or American. We can go JFK-MAD-BCN-MAD-JFK on IB or even through LHR on BA by doing JFK-LHR-BCN-LHR-JFK. My parents didn’t want to connect and worried if we missed a connection or something. Since we had to fly direct it came down to a basic American airline. At the time Delta was more expensive and since I happened to like American Airlines and feel like they would probably be a better airline then Delta (boy I didn’t really the forums carefully) we book American Airlines.

Departure: The day came and I could barley sleep all night or day. The flight departs at 5:35 so we had time to get to the airport. We did some much needed things in the morning, got ready and headed off to the airport rather early at 2:00. My photo’s start at the curb-side check in. Enough talking now let’s get to my 100+ photos!

Let’s start this dream trip!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1108.jpg
A rather busy security line! Luckily once online we got moved to the first class line. I don’t know why I guess she just wanted to push us through.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1109.jpg
Heading to the gates… we at least let’s get something to eat.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1110.jpg
I just love the American Airlines terminal! It is amazing and very modern. Can we maybe hope the plane will be like that?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1111.jpg
Let’s eat at Bobby Vans!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1112.jpg
Some yummy choices today. I got the Tuna Tar-Tar. Might as well enjoy a first class meal cause I won’t get one sitting in economy.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1113.jpg
Yummy Yummy Tuna Tar-Tar. It was amazing!

I got a little sick. I think it was just nervous but I couldn’t sit in the restaurant anymore because I was about to throw up. I got up and went to walk around to relax and just calm down. This is my first flight overseas and I was just so excited and nervous at the same time.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1114.jpg
Taking a look at some of the classic AA logos hanging around the terminal.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1115.jpg
I love this one. So much nicer the the current AA logo.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1116.jpg
The blah AA logo. I enjoy the classic eagle just hate the grey.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1118.jpg
Times around the world.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1119.jpg
Some flags as well.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1120.jpg
This Air Berlin just pulled in. It was amazing how fast it was unloaded. I think in about 15-20 minutes I saw the crew leaving and literally passing the replacement crew in the hallway. It was amazing!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1121.jpg
Heading down to go across to the other side.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1123.jpg
Heading back up.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1124.jpg
Not really sure why I took this one.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1127.jpg
First view of my beautiful 767-300 taking us to BCN today.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1128.jpg
A cool interactive game AA has in its terminal. It was a fun puzzle game.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1129.jpg
A blast from the past. To bad there are no more.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1130.jpg
No information for our flight? What is going on with AA. I couldn’t believe it!

Boarding: Then it came, the time to board. No announcement was made and boarding began about an hour before the flight. Luckily I turned around and noticed the huge line or we wouldn’t of made it onboard. I asked the guy at the desk if this was the flight to BCN and in broken english said yes. I asked if this was my zone and he said it didn’t matter just get on. What kind of boarding is this? I was so disappointed in this start. AA has been great so far but went downhill from here.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1131.jpg
Heading down the jetway.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1132.jpg
Boarding the rather huge doored B767-300. Who knew it would be huge. I think 3 average sized people could enter at a time.

I was greeted by a nice gentlemen who pointed me towards my seat. He was not the lead but there where plenty of flight crew members saying hello. This is a pretty good start towards the flight, maybe things won’t be so bad.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1133.jpg
View from my seat.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1135.jpg
Terrible legroom. At first I thought it wouldn’t be bad but for an 8 hour flight I was wrong… it was terrible.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1136.jpg
I have never seen a tray table like this. I like it!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1137.jpg
Completely folded out. Pretty cool I must say, if it wasn’t hitting me in the legs and stomach…

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1138.jpg
I guess you can call this an amenity kit?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1139.jpg
Cabin view… obviously there are no PTVs…

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1140.jpg
After a quick taxi we took off. There was a wait for the runway but not as bad as I thought.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1140.jpg
Lined up with another AA behind us.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1141.jpg
Off we go!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1142.jpg
Finally service was announced and a drink and snack service was given out. I was surprised by the snack. I didn’t think we would get. I ordered a diet coke and got a full can, another shock with AA.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1143.jpg
A beautiful sunset was going on.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1144.jpg
Beef with pasta or Chicken and rice. I got the Beef and pasta.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1145.jpg
My brother got the chicken and pasta. We made a deal to share… being a trip reporter you gotta do what you gotta do.

By this time I couldn’t stand the tight seats and the terrible seat cushions. I had to stand up and walk around for pretty much half of the flight. I would sit stand, sit stand, sit stand… terrible terrible seats. I went to the back galley and just wanted to look around. I saw a flight attendant on his iPad playing a flight simulator game. I also saw them all talking. I was disappointed but not surprised that there was no other drink run or even munch run.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1146.jpg
Pitch black with the little light on the wing flashing.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1148.jpg
Pre-arrival meal. I’m sorry this is a meal? We got one and only one. Why bother serving it on a tray… at least it was hot!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1149.jpg
First sign of light now reaching the edge of Spain. I was so happy we where nearing our destination. One because our amazing cruise will start and two I will get out of this plane!!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1150.jpg
You can barley see the lights on the ground.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1152.jpg
A beautiful sunrise over a not so beautiful ground. I didn’t want it to rain because it would dampen our cruise.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1152.jpg
Hello Mr. Sun nice to see you.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1153.jpg
Heading towards the clouds praying it is not raining!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1154.jpg
Moment of truths seconds away.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1155.jpg
So far so good.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1156.jpg
Let’s see!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1157.jpg
It is dry and I can see Spain finally! I was happy at this point that the seats didn’t bother me so much.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1158.jpg
Flaps down… heading into BCN!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1159.jpg
A cruise liner heading into the port at Barcelona. Nope not ours though.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1160.jpg
More ships waiting to be called in.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1161.jpg
On final, I love those clouds.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1162.jpg
Almost there!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1163.jpg
Welcome to BCN!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1164.jpg
As we turned off the runway I saw my first European airline… well LCC airline. I heard much about you Ryanair… maybe next time i’ll fly you!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1165.jpg
If you didn’t know this is Vueling territory we are entering.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1166.jpg
Leaving? I just got here!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1167.jpg
Another small European friend. Enjoy your flight to London!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/IMG_1168.jpg
Time to start my European adventure.

Conclusion: I enjoyed the flight and hated it at the same time. The terminal, food and service was great the seats where terrible and with lack of PTVs I couldn’t even distract myself from the terrible seats. Also my MacBook Pro didn’t fit that well on the tray table so I couldn’t even watch that.

Stay Tuned for Part 2! It will arrive when my hand stops cramping…

Hello

Good report, thanks for sharing it with us. AA seemed to provide standard service for a US carrier, not more not less.
The only difference was that Delta would have gotten you PTV's. Food does not look that bad indeed.

Greetings
Marc

Actually I thought the food was excellent for an American carrier.

HolaFlyingFan18!

Benvingut a Barcelona!

Great to see a TR on this route; I have never flown AA out of my hometown so I have always wondered what the flight looked like and your TR gives an excellent idea of what is going on, at least on the inbound flight.

It is always a pain to fly those seats for long flights and being almost no able to move from your original position. Food looks OK for a US carrier, I have heard and seen worse on inter-continental flights.

Just one tip, next time get a seat on the other side of the plane, it gives you a great view of BCN when landing from the North, usual landing pattern during the day.

Did you spend sometime in Barcelona? or did you go directly to your cruise?

Looking forward to reading your next flights.

Salut!

We headed straight for the cruise but after the cruise we spent a day in Barcelona. I loved it, it was so beautiful. It is just amazing how you guys live in such beautiful historic areas. To you it’s like yea whatever but to me it was amazing. I’ll post the return trip which will include the cruise and Barcelona. (By the way I love your cars.)

Thanks for the TR. The photos were a bit blurry and difficult to view at times though.

After reading this, as a US citizen, I am embarrassed to say that this is one of our "flagship carriers." What lousy third rate service!!

I refuse to fly AA TATL (in fact I hardly ever fly them at all) until something is done about their product.

Finally service was announced and a drink and snack service was given out. I was surprised by the snack. I didn’t think we would get. I ordered a diet coke and got a full can, another shock with AA.

Pathetic that expectations are that low.

Again, pathetic.

Do I need to say it again?

I am shocked at the legroom.

They must have added seats. They used to have excellent 32" legroom.

However the food sucks and so does the entertainment.

But I do like the fact that they charge $60 for excess luggage fees compared to UNITED which ripps you off by $200.

Another reason to stay clear of US carriers.

Despite many photos, this trip report shows clearly the AA product on this flight. I´ve never flown with US carrier and will stick in with some European and Asian carriers. I was surprised that they offered meals. I thought AA offers snacks and drinks with pay on board style only...Thanks for this TR!

Its great that we can "sample" the product without having to pay for the pleasure, or as I suspect not so pleasurable !

The above sums it up

Cheers

HatchikoDog:

AA stopped serving food on domestic and Caribbean flights. You can buy a snack. Sandwiches are about $10.

They used to serve nice breakfasts to the Caribbean. Now you have to buy a turkey sandwich for "breakfast". No muffins or breakfast items. The bread is mysteriously called "breakfast bread." I brought my own food.

The legroom to the Caribbean is also awful and no entertainment. Next time I will fly on JETBLUE. I don't care about the miles.

I flew AA to MIA, my first time and fell in love with the flight and airline. I assume I was blinded by the 757 that flew me there and back… I do see how Delta is a much better airline at least for now. Let’s see what happens after the AA bankruptcy thing.

Sorry about the blurry photos I was with a huge family and wanted to keep up so half of the photos where walking photos.

Delta isn't much better. You might have had the privelege of a ptv, but otherwise I don't think their offering (including food) is significantly different. Not sure if you care about FF miles but AAdvantage miles are significantly more useful than skypesos - so that figures in for some people (like me). And I believe AA now offers free beer/wine in TATL Y, correct? And when I saw the thread title I assumed you'd be in a 757 for this route, so at least they still fly a WB!
Thanks for the report - hope you had a great vacation.

Hi there FlyingFan18,

Thank you very much for this insight on AAs economy class. Have had a couple flights with them and found them quite nice actually. Even had an upgrade to J which was fantastic!

Anyway very nice report despite some pictures being a bit blury. Looks like you got unlucky with no PTVs, some airlines still have some planes without PTVs fliying around unfortunately. Being an overnight flight it isn't too bad to have nog PTV as most people will try to get some sleep. That legroom looks terrible, cant see myself fitting in there.

Quoting FlyingFan18 (Thread starter):

Thats what many airports do when there is a long line for "economy'' passengers..

It could have been a light load?

Quoting FlyingFan18 (Thread starter):
Luckily I turned around and noticed the huge line or we wouldn’t of made it onboard.

I''m guessing you would have looked back 50 mins after that to make your flight hehe
Quoting FlyingFan18 (Thread starter):

Looks absolutely terrible

hmm, not good. Was there a little bar in the galley out back?

If you thought AAs legorom was bad on this flight, try them out!

Looking forward to the next part

I just posted part 2. I would love to read a Vueling report to make my AA flight better than it was. HAHA!
- Justin

EDIT: Comment about snack; we didn’t get one on the way back. I am not sure what the common thing is so I can’t say if that is an added perk or not. I can say that the crew going there where so much better then the crew coming back. The crew coming there was nice, chatted with passengers, told us places to go in Barcelona, explained where they stayed, etc… on the way back you where lucky if they didn’t take the food from you while it was in your mouth.
