To Rome With AirBaltic. RIX-FCO-RIX

Tue Dec 18, 2012 10:21 pm

In mid November I decided that I needed a break from this rather depressing Nordic fall here in Latvia. Even if it was just for a weekend. Residing in Riga one has several options to pick from. For me weather at the destination played a big part but also that it would be a city and a country that I've never visited before. So while airBaltic offers really good connections to several destinations in Southern Europe the winner was Rome, Italy. Here goes my first trip report on a.net-hope you enjoy it guys!

Date:24th of November
Flight number: BT631
Callsign: BTI631
Alternative callsign: BTI6NG
Airline: Air Baltic
From (F): Riga (Latvia)
To (T): Rome (Italy)
Distance: 1877km, 1013nm
Estimated flight time: 2h 37m
Class:C

airBaltic's Dash Q400's and Fokkers are busy feeding its hub with passengers from nearby stations every morning. This day was no exeption.

YL-BBR, a B733 was assigned to fly the route. We were off the blocks at 0931LT- one minute later than scheduled.

Take off from runway 18.We were second in sequence behing a company Q400.

Mandatory legroom shot. airBaltics Boeings are fitted with comfy Recaro leather seats with a seat pitch I unfortunately am not aware of. More than enough for me.

Business class was empty besides me in it while economy enjoyed a load factor of about 80-90%. C class seats in BT Boeings are separated by a blocked seat in between the two. The flight had a crew of three. One male in business and two females in economy. Everyone of who were really nice throughout the flight.

Our flight was greeted by northerly headwinds.

In-flight menu for the day.

Hands down the best omlette I've ever had! Rest of it was really good as well.

Business class passengers are provided with a pillow and a blanket.

Hello Italy!

Suprisingly enough our flight was ahead of schedule despite the headwind.

I decided to use the bus for a transfer to Termini station downtown. For a while a minilorry full of rags and six people sitting at the front made way next to us.

Amazing would be a clear understatement when speaking of the cultural heritage in Rome. It would take far more than just two days to see all this city has to offer. Fortunately I had TripAdvisors city guide for Android which really helped me out with its already plotted itineraries. This way I was able to get the most out of my short visit.

Some tourist shots. Il Vittoriano.

Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II

Presidence Palace. Police presence was really big that day. If someone knows why don't hesitate to share the light.

St. Peters Basilica.

On the way back I totally underestimated the queue for the bus to the airport at Termini station so I decided to have a go with Leonardo Express. After 30 minutes of smooth ride it arrived at Fiumicino.

Date:25th of November
Flight number: BT634
Callsign: BTI634
Alternative callsign: BTI6GB
Airline: Air Baltic
From (F): Rome (Italy)
To (T): Riga (Latvia)
Distance: 1877km, 1013nm
Estimated flight time: 2h 37m
Class:Y

airBaltic is serviced by AlItalia ground staff in Fiumicino. They were really nice and fast- even offered me a seat selection without me asking for it. I decided to pick a seat over the wing by the window of course.

Flight was serviced by my old friend "Romeo" again.

We were off the blocks at 1709LT-4 minutes later than planned but arrived a whopping 26 minutes earlier than scheduled. Guess those northbound winds were still blowing. No pictures from the uneventful flight back unfortunately. Pictures were made with Galaxy S2.

Thanks for your report and pics - they are great. Shame there are so few replies for your report. I enjoyed your pics of Rome - it's certainly a great place for photography and there are some amazing buildings/ruins to look at.

I particularly liked your headwind shot enroute to FCO - superb!

Air Baltic seemed to be fine. How did you find them? Would you fly them again?

How was the C class fare? Outstanding omelette aside, the 'menu' looks nothing amazing. Nice little report though - thanks for sharing.

@palmjet- Living in Riga airBaltic operates majority of the routes out of here. I would definitely fly them again in the future.

@RussianJet- C class fare was approx. 436€.

Hi there,

that's a nice trip report you've got there. AirBaltic is on my list since they have some ancient 737s in their fleet  .

That's not too much! You must have been lucky.

The breakfast looks simple but delicious, wouldn't mind having it tomorrow for breakfast.
Thanks for sharing this trip report and keep up the good work!

Cheers,
