Fantastic! AA997 DFW-EZE F January 2013

Wed Jan 23, 2013 6:47 pm

AA997 DFW-EZE F January 2013
Departure: 7:35pm
Arrival: 8:50am
Flight time: 10 hours 15 minutes
Dinner/Breakfast

Thoughts on the new service: I found the presentation and ingredients to be great. All aspects of the service had a great flow and seemed to be very well thought out. The simple water glass was nice, I didn't have to ask for it, and it was constantly refilled without asking. The new silverware has real weight to it and is proper silverware like in a fine restaurant. The new crockery all fits together and has a nice look. Now don't me me wrong, I was a big fan of the old set and didn't believe it needed to be changed. Overall it was a perfect flight and other than some hard product deficiencies, I believe the new American is doing great.

Breakfast
I filled out the landing card but preferred the cereal. I really liked this option as I could select when I wanted breakfast and each item I wanted.

New amenity kit was nice but is first in a series so they should cycle through these pretty often.

Amuse bouche, wonderful and I really wanted more but did not want to over eat.

Truly great starter and the presentation was very nice.

I liked the poppy seed dressing and it was nice to have a choice other than the balsamic vinegar that was not some heavy creamy dressing.

Soup was great as usual. Why are soups so good on airplanes?!

I reluctantly ordered the steak but it was fantastic. Cooked perfectly and the cheese had good flavor. The grilled tomato was pretty good as well.

Had to have this over the cheese but I only had a few spoonfuls.

Standard breakfast and everything tasted just fine.

Wow I am really impressed with the new meal presentations.

The new menu looks pretty good and I like the new table mat. Very stylish and modern!

New meal presentation looks fantastic! Well done AA! Maybe I should fly international first class just for the meal???

The AA Y meals are "atrocious."

Glad to see AA feed the F passengers OK.

And with the new 31" legroom reduced from 32" and the outdated movie selections with bad sound one can make no sense of, the flights on AA Y are pretty enjoyable.

Nice report, funny though how they had the knifes and forks on the wrong side! Food looks good.

WOW! AA really made their catering even better. They already had the best food in F and J, now this is high end restaurant quality.

Well since my main background was catering at EA, I'll express a few thoughts.....Now bear in mind this is FC on a 10+ hour international flight......
-Plastic glass for pre departure?
-I think there is a white table cloth but it covered with a tray and paper cover, or is it cloth. I don't know how many seats in F/C, but NO TRAYS. Your tray is hand set. One item at a time. I hope the water glass was refilled with bottled water and NOT water from the aircraft system....YUK
-the tableware and glassware look like Bennigans...cheap but functional.....no logos or names
-the plates etc are simple stuff that don't reflect a logo or anything....
-that damn sundae again! Get some imagination or open your taste to alternatives
-I did think the portions were proper ie. not food over filling the plates, like the potatoes
-the service by the FAs wasn't mentioned, so I assume it was pretty good.

Compared to what I have personally experienced on simular flights, international........B-

Please don't flame me but the airlines don't base the expense of meals in first or business based on full fare. How many people are upgrades at lower prices? It wasn't bad based on todays economy, just polish it up. thanks

I agree there have been a lot of changes over the years, but I don't think we can compare the state of presentation and food from 2013 to what it was with Eastern. Flying has changed so much over the last 10 years. I'll agree its not as classy/elegant than it used to be, but I don't think the above photos make it look too bad.

Best,

Those damn sundaes are one of the most popular items AA serves (signature I believe); so popular infact EL CHEAPO DL has added them, also as AA/BA have gotten cozier BA has added them as well as the AA mixed nuts.
The boursin filet again has been a VERY popular entree. People like it and the comany puts it on.

As an EA fan, I agree w/u re: the tacky plastic predeparture vessels; that is just an AA policy (no glass or mugs on the ground).

Also, AA's first cuisine is tops among its US piers.

Looks better than in the past and almost on par to DL's BE product for international (very similar square plates too). I wonder if they have made any improvements to business class as well?

Yes J did get updates to the service and more investment in the food quality. I believe the difference is in the number of courses and the way its presented.

Quoting EASTERN747 (Reply 7):
-Plastic glass for pre departure?

AA chooses to use plastic so that passengers can enjoy their pre-departure beverages right up until take-off. FARs require all galley items be picked up and compartments closed and locked prior to pushback. Since the plastic flutes are disposable, they can go in the trash, and legally remain at the customer's seat until take-off. This decision was made with the customer in mind, and I think most would rather the extra time to enjoy their drink than have a glass.

There is a white table cloth with a gray placemat over the top. There is no paper or plastic. Each item is hand set, as you noted, and the water glass is filled with bottled water.
