Carrots! Upper Deck B747 Business UA SFO-FRA

Mon Mar 11, 2013 12:23 am

I had to work in Europe, and my company paid for a business class ticket. As many of you know, I have this kind of running joke about carrot sticks & crackers, so I have made this trip "theme" based upon that. It's all in good humor; please don't take it seriously. I fly on the upper deck on United in the Boeing 747 business class. I must say, the food on United is really much, much better than before. That was one of their biggest downsides, and they've really listened to their customers, making the food tastier and more presentable. I really enjoy this UA flight to Europe. The B747 is just such a comfortable, smooth plane, and I feel so safe on it.

The complete report is on youtube (commercial free) under my name. We cannot post direct links to videos here on airliners.net anymore, but you can easily find it under my name (which is the same as my airliners.net name).

Again, this isn't the complete report, which is in video format on youtube. We can no longer post direct links to it on airliners, but if you're interested, it's under my name on youtube.

Nice report and video... always enjoy them. I have to confess however that United is one of the worst carriers across the Atlantic IMHO and the food is poor.
I personally would be pretty upset if an airline served me "Veuve du Vernay" in business class and tried to pass it off as champagne. It IS NOT champagne but a sparkling wine from the Bordeaux region... cheap stuff!

TYCOON, the sparkling wine shown is pre-departure only. On my recent UA Transatlantic flights in BusinessFirst the Champagne selection was:

Pannier AOP Brut Tradition NV, Champagne

or

Nicholas Feuillatte Brut Réserve NV, Champagne,

both of which are "real" Champagne. The the flight attendants usually do say "sparkling wine?" when offering pre-departure beverages.

Good report, and video Sfflyer123!

Great to be able to fly on the 747 - what a beauty!

Food looks pretty average, but maybe that's just my impression. I do like United however, and fly them a lot.

Thanks for sharing!

Quoting sfflyer123 (Thread starter):

Just watched the YouTube video.

Great trip report! Upper Deck J on a UA 747 is the way to go. It can have a feeling of seclusion similar to that in the aircraft's nose.

In the upper deck bubble the feeling can be exclusive, with only twenty business seats, and a private staircase to reach it. You are right about deplaning being a drawback.

The salmon appetizer with what looked like a surprise wrapped inside -- that looked very good. I was generally impressed by the appearance of all the food and presentation displayed, except for in the United Club, where I thought they should have offered sandwiches or something, at least, not just only carrots, crackers, and cheese, etc.

Thanks, and I'll await your next report!

Cheers,
Scottie

I have LH coming up this summer on the A380. Excited about that. I think my next report will be domestic though. Thanks.

I know...I know. The menu said they were pouring champagne! I did not check to see that the pre-departure drink was not the same as what was listed in the menu! Thanks for the comment.

Yes, exactly. I assumed that the pre-departure drink was the same was what was in the menu.
