Everyone Gets To Scoot SIN-BKK

Fri Apr 26, 2013 5:52 pm

Scoot Pte Ltd
TZ 302
Singapore Changi Airport - Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport
1745-1900H (duration 2hr 15min)
Boeing 777-200ER (9V-OTD Maju Lah)

28 Dec 2012

The aviation scene in Singapore just gets more and more exciting each time I blink my eyes. Within the last 8 years, we've seen an explosion of LCCs in the midst of formation, merger, formation again ... Like a shapeless amoeba, the form keeps changing depending on where the wind changes direction.

With the right financial backing, only the strong ones remained - namely Tiger and Jetstar. Not to be left behind on the long haul LCC segment, SQ has gone ahead to form Scoot. This name was even ridiculed by Tony Fernandez himself. Then again, Tony the man has achieved such a status for himself in the last decade that he has managed to get politicians to listen eat out of his hands so if he says Lee Kwan Yew farts in his sleep, we'll just laugh along. He says whatever he wants no matter how ludicrous.

So here we are... Scoot. What a name. Virgin sounds naughty, Ryanair and EasyJet sound like slave ships... and then we have Scoot. To someone from another side of the planet, ignornace will immediately come into play generating a default "huh?". Even us here in Singapore, we were initially rather amused by the choice of name for this new airline. My eyes rolled when the press declared this airline wanted "fun" attitude to permeate (don't most LCCs try to be anyway?) and that the crew were encouraged to crack jokes (please don't try to be a Southwest).

Oh-emm-gee... That was all I could say.

DEPARTURE DAY

Scoot flies out of Changi Airport Terminal 2. The budget terminal is being demolished at the moment to make way for a bigger, better one. I wonder if Scoot will move there once completed? No news about that yet though.

At present, Scoot has only one daily flight to Bangkok which leaves at an odd 1745H. Not exactly a popular time slot for Bangkok-starved Singaporeans but if the fare is good, why not?

Its post Christmas and there are people everywhere and all over the airport trying to get to where they need to for New Year's Eve. I am no exception, having chosen to ring in the special occassion in the Big Mango.

As the A330 is being delivered, SQ cannot wait to get rid of the first generation Boeing 777-200s fast enough. Do you want it? Do you? Hello who wants them? Some went to Royal Brunei, and some to Scoot. I'm sure Lee Kwan Yew had one as a gift from SQ but he dismissed the idea as stupid so the CEO made a hasty retreat with his ego bruised.
That being said, the ones transferred to Scoot went for an extreme makeover inside and out.

I was craning my neck in anticipation to see what the interior looked like, having only seen photos of it on the forum. Looking out of Gate F37, I could see that Maju Lah was my ride this evening.

Greeting me this evening were a pair of ladies at Door L2 of this shining looking banana coloured plane.

"Hello Mr Soh, welcome on board!"

Wow, it's like boarding an SQ flight. That's one thing about flying LCCs in Singapore. You inevitably wind up with ex-SQ girls along the aisle and they aren't difficult to spot. How, you might ask? Their make up is a dead giveaway. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, make no mistake. But their polished demeanour seemed slightly out of place for an airline claiming to be "cool", "hip" and "down with it getting jiggy".

Found the seats with no problem at all. I had no problem with EK's 3-4-3 configuration, no reasons why I should moan about Scoot's similar set up. I found the seats to be rather comfy and they weren't hard like new seats of recent flights. Pitch was fairly decent too which was a relief and I was to find out later that the recline is very generous as well. With no PTV, I guess reclining your set the whole way wasn't going to annoy your neighbour behind.

Just like Tiger, announcements of Scoot are right out of SQ's manual. They only replaced "Singapore Airlines - a member of Star Alliance" with "Scoot". Nothing "fun" about that, is there?

Push back was on time for a flight which was relatively full.

Take off on 02C is a given at the end of the year due to prevailing winds. This brought us on an almost direct heading towards BKK with little manouvering.

As soon as the seatbelt sign was off, the Scoot-attendants wasted no time and rolled out the meal cart from aft. Items were for purchase, of course. I have a soft spot for anything croissant. You can smear shit on it and I'll still go gaga over this wrinkly twisted piece of confectionary. On this day, my croissant came with ham and cheese. It set me back SGD11.00, but hey - I didn't expect meals to come cheap on these flights.

The ladies were friendly and very vocal about pushing items for sale. One half of the cart attendants was again - very obviously ex-SQ. Look at the photo beneath and you'll see what I mean.

Despite this being a "large" plane - they managed to make two passed with this cart during the short two hour flight. Perhaps they didn't sell enough. Speaking of sell, one thing they were selling inflight was upgrades to Scoot Biz for a token fee. Interested takers were to flag down any member of the crew. Not sure if there were any interested party but seeing how that cabin was configured, no one can beat Air Asia's truly premium looking fore cabin. So I'll pass for now, thanks. Unless it is free.

With no PTV to entertain me with flight show, the setting sun outside was my entertainment. But that too was coming to an end and soon I was just staring at the seatback and a black window. How exciting! I had half a mind to ask a crew for postcards so I could write about what a fantastic time I was having that very moment.

Before I could, the nose dipped downwards and arrival announcement from the flight deck came on the blower. On cue, like an SQ flight, a safety announcement was made to ensure our window shades up, seats were upright, tray tables secured and footrests stowed. Wait a minute, did I hear you wrong? Footrests? Darling, this is Scoot not SQ eh?

Lights were later dimmed for the approach.

Landing with a thump welcomed us to Bangkok. Again, an SQ-like announcment followed with the usual information about weather, time at destination etc... But it ended with something entirely cheesey.

"... thank you for flying Scoot. So lets Scoot out of here!"

Err... Have you ever experienced a company dinner where it is all formal and then your CEO goes up on stage to give a speech? Towards the end of a yawn inducing drawl of past years figures and future projections, he concludes suddenly and yells "Yee-haw so lets rock and roll!".... Shocking some of us out of our skins and wetting our branded undergear.

Ill placed attempt to sound cool, and wrong timing of a punchline is at best cringe worthy. This was exactly how I felt about the airline there and then.

AFTERTHOUGHTS

Scoot is still a very new airline trying to figure out her identity. She seems to be chugging along fine for now but I just wished the airline tried less hard to be fun and more on just trying to be... I don't know... Normal. Would I fly Scoot again? The answer is yes, because I thought the economy cabin was comfy enough for a flight of that duration. The challenge would be to fly them to destinations further afield like Sydney or Nanjing. I have done a long flight on an LCC to Perth and that was only just passable with Air Asia (plus they had a PTV then). I'm still not certain how I would fare on a PTV-less airline like Scoot or Jetstar. Looking at how frequent my travels have been of late - intentional or otherwise, who knows I might be back on this banana cream for another ride?

Now... SCOOT OFF!

Nice to see you write TRs again! You'll have even more time to write Trs when you move to Australia - most finish work on 5pm on the dot. I don't think I can ever adapt to the stresses and lifestyle in the tiny "red dot" A good move on your part!
You mentioned the seating 3-4-3 is comfy for the short duration of flight. Comparing to SQ's 3-3-3-, I have always wondered how they have found the extra space to fit an extra seat. Have they pinched inches from the seat widths, made arm rests smaller and aisles narrower? Does the cabin feel like you are on a slave ship? These points have prevented me
from flying long haul on the likes of EK and KLM.

Btw, are you allowed to bring your own water and food on board? I have flown Jetstar and they did not seem to mind me eating outside food on the plane.

I went back and looked at this, quite funny!!

Fantastic TR. Your style of writing just makes you want to keep reading and reading! I had a couple of good laughs while reading this.

Hi Ryan,

Loved the report and photos.

I don't understand how anyone can say the seats on Scoot are not hard compared with Jetstar, AirAsia or Qantas as recent examples that I've flown. Must be shaped for Asian bums, because my wife thought they were okay. Or maybe it's all Barry's fault.

Quoting debonair (Reply 2):
That's the way a new Jetstar A330 looks like:

If I understand correctly from the Australian Aviation Thread this aircraft is going straight to Qantas. Both Jetstar and Scoot rent out iPads and Scoot also offers wireless streaming to your own device. But the offerings are so poor with Scoot there's no point. Jetstar's are only recently a bit better. Jetstar also has cabin screens, though on my last flight these weren't switched on.

Quoting kretek (Reply 3):
Btw, are you allowed to bring your own water and food on board? I have flown Jetstar and they did not seem to mind me eating outside food on the plane.

Officially no on Scoot, yes on Jetstar. That said, I brought my own breakfast on Scoot in a big brown paper bag. Lucky Ryan wasn't on my flight or he'd have stolen all my croissants.

Nope, AFAIK these A330 will leave Jetstar as soon as the new B787s are delivered.

According to Jetstar's web-page:
" Our latest A330 also offers all economy passengers pay per view seatback entertainment, with a variety of entertainment available on demand."

Sorry, my bad wording. I think some Jetstar A330s are already in the process of being converted for Qantas, despite the 787s being undelivered. See the Aus Aviation Thread in Civil Aviation for more details.

Hi Ryan, thanks for your trip report. I do want to try Scoot one day, if only for the fact that it operates 777s. I can put up with having to pay for food and a 3-4-3 economy layout, and feeling more like being in a market than on a plane, with flight attendants rather vocally pushing items for sale!

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):

I don't mind the name. Personally, I think "Scoot" is quite a clever play on words, given the meaning of the word "scoot" and sounding sort of like "SQ" pronounced as a word rather than an acronym.

Hello all,

Thanks for stopping by...

Quoting debonair (Reply 2):

Agree... But this would be annoying on a night flight when the cabin is darkened.

Iya donk! You can say that again. By the way I'll be down under again come July. Are you based in Perth?

Quoting kretek (Reply 3):
Have they pinched inches from the seat widths, made arm rests smaller and aisles narrower? Does the cabin feel like you are on a slave ship? These points have prevented me

Seat width is slightly narrower, but it is so slight you'll hardly notice it unless your ass is of Oprah proportions. Therefore while I have heard about the forumer's apprehension over a 777's 3-4-3, I found these fears rather unfounded as you might have read my infamous EK TR featuring Wilma.

Quoting kretek (Reply 3):
Btw, are you allowed to bring your own water and food on board? I have flown Jetstar and they did not seem to mind me eating outside food on the plane.

I've never had an issue smuggling a burger on board.

Nooooo... Not to say these LCCs have no standard and live off big brother's droppings. If you are terminated from SQ, chances of you getting hired by a local LCC is close to nothing.

I've always walked past Miss Puke and wondered how it would be like inside.

All the men walk out happy....

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 21):
Hahahaha... Boy that's one interesting area to be in. But I'm mainly there for my favourite wan tan noodle. Its a dingy little coffeeshop tucked away down a lane. I'm sure you know by now for me, it's all about the food.

....and illeagal software.
Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 21):
If I am the one doing the whipping, will it make a difference? *wink*
Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 21):
I'm but a dainty little pint sized shy Asian boy... Quiet and demure.

If you know a lady with those specs then yes, she can whip me all she wants.

Oh well. Time for me to board my flight.

Ryan .... you are on a roll ....you are covering up for your TR hiatus ....

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
This name was even ridiculed by Tony Fernandez himself. Then again, Tony the man has achieved such a status for himself in the last decade that he has managed to get politicians to listen eat out of his hands so if he says Lee Kwan Yew farts in his sleep, we'll just laugh along. He says whatever he wants no matter how ludicrous.
Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
To someone from another side of the planet, ignornace will immediately come into play generating a default "huh?"

LOL

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
(please don't try to be a Southwest).

They are my favourite American carrier!

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
How, you might ask? Their make up is a dead giveaway. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, make no mistake.

You just hate the SQ girls don't you?

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
I have a soft spot for anything croissant. You can smear shit on it and I'll still go gaga over this wrinkly twisted piece of confectionary. On this day, my croissant came with ham and cheese. It set me back SGD11.00, but hey - I didn't expect meals to come cheap on these flights.

11 dollars???

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):
On cue, like an SQ flight, a safety announcement was made to ensure our window shades up, seats were upright, tray tables secured and footrests stowed. Wait a minute, did I hear you wrong? Footrests? Darling, this is Scoot not SQ eh?

SQ again !!!

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Thread starter):

LOL again

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 1):
Everyone says I'm flying a lot these days...

You could have done a bollywood dance number there .... perfect setup!!!

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 1):
There is a saying if someone slaps you on the right cheek, give him your left.

The famous Mahatma Gandhi said that!!! .... the one thing similar between you and Gandhi is the clean shaven head.

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 1):
I really don't know about that!

What was that expression??

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 12):
I found these fears rather unfounded as you might have read my infamous EK TR featuring Wilma.

Aah yes Wilma!!

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 21):

Thanks man. I've got at least three more TRs lined up from flights I've taken this year so far.

Yay yippeeeee .....

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 21):
If I am the one doing the whipping, will it make a difference? *wink*

What EXACTLY do you mean by that?

once again a lovely TR and thanks for sharing.

Hello all, thanks for stopping by...

Quoting Superfly (Reply 22):
I think 'Scoot' is a terrible name for an airline.

LOL I know! But then again, someone pointed out it could be a play on the abbreviation "SQ".

Quoting Superfly (Reply 22):
All the men walk out happy....

Erm... Hun, then I've come to the wrong place.

Quoting Superfly (Reply 22):
If you know a lady with those specs then yes, she can whip me all she wants.

I'll don a wig, just pretend I'm a curvy woman.

Quoting ojas (Reply 23):
Ryan .... you are on a roll ....you are covering up for your TR hiatus ....

You can say that again. I've got 3 more TRs wondering whether to pen them or not.

Quoting ojas (Reply 23):
You just hate the SQ girls don't you?

I actually don't. My flight with them a few weeks back was excellent. I just like effing around with the trainees and watch them scuttle about like ants on fire.

Quoting ojas (Reply 23):
11 dollars???

It came with a drink. That's pretty standard for a meal on LCC.

Quoting ojas (Reply 23):
You could have done a bollywood dance number there .... perfect setup!!!

I'm just missing villagers in the background carrying brown earthen pots.

Quoting ojas (Reply 23):
The famous Mahatma Gandhi said that!!! .... the one thing similar between you and Gandhi is the clean shaven head.

Actually, it was Jesus Christ in the gospel of Luke.

Quoting ojas (Reply 23):
What EXACTLY do you mean by that?

Come by again and bend over. The you'll know EXACTLY what I mean. LOL!
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

THAT would be an awesome YouTube video.

From your report, sounds like Scoot is the opposite of SQ.
