A Tour Of The New Queen Alia Airport (AMM)IN Pics!

Fri May 10, 2013 10:30 am

First of all, this Trip Report is NOT written by me; but by my best friend Nadeem who travelled from Dubai to Amman and back and got to use the New Queen Alia Airport. This TR will go into details about the new airport--pros and cons IN PICS. I hope you like it. =)

QAIA

The New QAIA opened its doors on 14th of March 2013; started for RJ operations and flights only. However, on 11th of April, the new terminal started to operate all incoming and outgoing airlines. The old terminals were closed for rehabilitation to increase the capacity from 7 m pax/year (Current) to 9 m pax/ year. Other extension is planned to increase the airport capacity to 12m pax/year. The new design of QAIA was inspired by Bedouin tents, showing Jordan as contemporary Arabic, middle eastern kingdom that values its culture.

Arriving From Dubai

Upon arrival, I was extremely enjoying my walk from the airplane to the arrival terminal; the tube that connects the plane to the airport is finished by 5 stars standard, allowing a clear view for both the airport and runway. Once I reached immigration and passport control, I was amazed by the hall area. However, I used the e-gate at QAIA and went down to collect my luggage, 4 luggage belts were there (compared to 2 only at the old terminal). It was very obvious how fast to see our luggage coming through the belt. So, I got my luggage, greeted by another immigration officer and left the airport. The whole duration was exactly 26 minutes (from the time I left the plane until I was outside the airport).

The new departure rule ( I love to call it as the 10 minutes rule). Drivers have got only 10 minutes to drop their beloved ones and leave the airport before charging them fines. I find it extremely effective in reducing the congestion at the departure area. Upon entering the terminal, I found it open and big, but yet simple and beautiful. SO I proceeded to check in counter (many check in counters, more than I can remember). No security checks nor X-rays on check in or before, thus Jordan had solved the biggest hassle that existed in the old airport by installing piece of art security equipment (Like Dubai airport, T3) finished my check in and then proceeded to the passport control, used my e-gate, then the routine security and X-ray check and then that’s it! I was at the duty free.

Upon checking the duty free and some restaurants. I reached to a “T-junction” that leads to the departure gates. Before leaving I wanted to check the Crown lounge (an elevator at the T junction can take you there). I went there and presented my credit Card and I enjoyed it! The new lounge occupies a big Terrance-like location that oversees the duty free and some part of the runway. I extremely enjoyed it especially the new sofas that were placed, had a snack, I got myself a coffee, smoked a cig. And went to the departure gate.

Things that I like about the new airport:

1- Fast process
2- Hustle free
3- Interior design
4- Bedouin dooms
5- Crown lounge
6- Tube to airplane

Things that needs improvements:

1- Sound system to announce flights.
2- Crown lounge food and drinks selection.
3- Crown lounge smoking room
4- Signboards
5- Duty free goods
6- Departure gates hall.
7- Bedouin domes finishing.

Sad to say but is look rather plain and empty.

Seems they did not make much effort to finish the concrete ceilings, or add artwork, furniture, plants, or wrap the concrete columns with color.

With rich history, and things like Petra and Islamic art to draw inspiration from, they seem to have failed.

The best part of the airport from the pictures appears to be the bathroom!

I agree. I wonder if its a commercial thing or perhaps something on purpose.

I personally don't like the feeling of the pictures I have seen so far of the new terminal. The massive concrete ceilings everywhere seem to be quite uninviting for the night or cold periods (and AMM gets cold in winter).

Also I am not sure about the Crown Lounge completely open to the departure area... I kinda liked the old one; small but cozy. It doesn't look very cozy anymore looking at those huge naked concrete structures.

Anyway eager to discover it by myself!

I've gotta say, I'm very disappointed with this. AMM was supposed to be the "Crown Jewel" if I can put it that way. That roof is horrid. It looks quite cold and impersonal. The bathrooms look like those that have at McDonald's here. Which isn't bad. Just colourful, and quite nice. Speaking of, there isn't much in the way of amenities around the airport, is there?

Not to sound like Debby Downer, though. I just hope they bring in some artwork.
Or something.
