MEL-HKG-LHR....LHR-DXB-MEL (Qantas A380)

Thu Jun 20, 2013 12:33 pm

I recently took a month off work to travel around the UK and Europe with some friends of mine.

After reading all the previous trip reports before I left, I was so excited to finally head off on my trip, and figured that I best share my experience with everybody here!

This is my first trip report, so please tell me if I've left anything important out and I can try to fix it in the future!

Cathay Pacific A330 waiting patiently for her departure.

Dep: 14:15 (boarding)

MEL - HKG
QF29 (Airbus A330-300)

We didn't push back until approx. 17:30 and were made to stay seated for the entire wait (they didn't allow us back into the terminal!) So what should have been an 8hr flight had turned into 10+ hours - this is all before another 12 hour flight to London Heathrow.

We waited ever so patiently for our departure, at least there was a Singapore Airlines A380-800 to stare at in the meantime!

Anyway due to this delay we missed our connection (BA26 - HKG - LHR - Boeing 747-400) but the very hepful staff had managed to book us onto a Cathay Pacific flight before we even landed in HKG so we weren't too fussed.

The obligatory Qantas hot chocolate accompanied by a few delicious strawberry marshmallows!

We hung around at HKG for an hour or so before boarding our flight (we were split up during the re-booking process, and as many of you know sitting in ECONOMY by yourself for 10+ hours is not an easy task!)

I should also mention that I've not got stacks of photos of inside the cabin (we all know what an economy cabin looks like don't we?)

This was probably my favourite photo that I took while in London. Trafalgar Square was particularly busy on this day due to a large concert happening in the nearby vicinity (I can't remember the exact event)

RETURN TRIP

LHR - DXB - MEL QF10 (Airbus A380-800) VH-OQE Lawrence Hargrave

When we booked the trip back in November 12', the flight was booked to come via Singapore as all Qantas flights did back then. Although I knew that as of March 2013 there would be no more Qantas going through there. However, I thought that since it was stated on our flight details that we'd be flying through Singapore I thought nothing of it (our return flight was 11 April).

As we strolled on up to the self check-in at Heathrow I saw on the screen that we'd be flying home via DXB and thus gave me a bit of extra incentive to stay awake on the first leg of the flight as I'd never been to Dubai before and was keen to watch our approach for as long as possible.

This was also my first time flying on an A380, I've had a bad history with being scheduled to fly on them and then only at the last minute something tragic would happen like, Qantas grounding their fleet, all A380s being grounded due to engire issues.

As you can see, there is sufficient leg room for a person who is average height (I'm 179cm - which is roughly 5ft 11'). We got really lucky with the flight to DXB being quite empty so I managed to snag 3 seats to myself!!!

We pulled in next to another Qantas A380, which I assume was on it's way home to Sydney.

The stopover in Dubai was very quick and short, and I didn't get to explore everything Dubai airport has to offer, but I'm sure there will be another time to do that somewhere down the track.

Our 'superjumbo' ready and waiting to take us home back to a cold, soggy Melbourne.

Arriving back into Melbourne at roughly 05:45, with full darkness and the plane's lights on I managed to get a first-hand view of just how MASSIVE these engines really are.

I also managed to grab a couple of sneaky hot chocolates from the lovely flight attendants on this Qantas flight and their willingness to go further really made the trip home quite enjoyable.

Thanks for the TR! Welcome to the club

Just as some feedback, usually it's helpful to include a few more descriptive elements about the trip, perhaps include some pictures of the seat, the IFE screen, the catering, etc. and your personal critique of these components.

Since the Kangaroo route is often covered, incorporating these features often help your TR stand out from others and add some more dimension to the overall review. Even though, as you mention, many have flown it, sometimes things change like menus and IFE and an updated version can help people stay abreast with what to expect in the future.

Otherwise, job well done, and appreciate the report!

Its economy class - nothing flashy about a Y class seat and catering.. Chicken or fish?

Good effort.. hopefully the trip was good!

Okay, thanks heaps for the feedback. I will try to include a few more cabin interior pictures as well as some more detailed information on my next report...(whenever that may be).
