So after you read part one of the the whole series of trips which can be found here MiddleEast Part 1:The Golden Falcon GF FRA-BAH-DXB (by Luxair747SP Aug 22 2013 in Trip Reports) , lets go on with the second part of the trip.
On the next day we left the hotel at about 9 AM as we booked a daytrip to Qatar on that day.
As United Airlines offers dirt cheap 5th freedom flights between Dubai and Doha and vv we decided to book the evening DOH – DXB flight.
To get to Doha we chose Qatar Airlines, an airline we both havent flown before.
The simple route for today
As our QR flight to DOH was scheduled to depart at 11:30, we left the hotel at 9 and cought the metro to the airport where we arrived around half an hour later.
Close to our hotel
Check in was a breeze as there was nobody in front of us.
After getting the passports stamped and through security, we were airside, where we had a small breakfast, before boarding was already announced.
QATAR AIRWAYS DXB – DOH
Boarding was soon completed as the flight only had a load of around 50% of which most of the travelers were connecters.

Refreshment towel given to every passenger before take off
After a quick manual safety demonstration we pushed back and taxied to the active runway where we didnt have to wait long to rush into the sandy sky.
After reaching the cruising altitude, the crew fastly sprang into action.
Today on offer was a chicken wrap, which you also sometimes get on Lufthansa.
There were also two drink runs performed, but i think when they have a full load it is only possible to serve one drink to each passenger.
After about 50 minutes in the air, we already started our decent again into the old Doha Airport.
I dont want to start now about the new DOH airport but i can tell you that it is about the same as the current problem in Berlin.
After a bit more than an hour in the air, we touched down on qatari ground and made our way to a remote parking position.

The bus, which took us from the airport has several stops, mostly for connecting passengers, but we disembarked at the arrivals terminal, where we found no queues and we were quickly stamped into Qatar after paying the visa fee ( about 20$).
Outside we quickly got a taxi, as our time in Doha was fairly limited.
Our first stop was Souq Waqif, a traditional market area. As it was quite cool there, we spend a bit of time wandering around the different shops and market stalls.
After that we drove with another taxi to the shopping mall close by, where we did a bit of shopping, before it was already time to drive back to the airport.
Luckily the taxi driver took as all along the Corniche, which is quite nice, but has a lot of constructions going on at the moment.
Arriving at the airport well in time, the check in didnt open yet, but it was quite interesting to watch how different the travelers were.

Inside the terminal
I found it quite fascinating, that many people from the indian subcontinent traveled with larger paper boxes instead of suitcases and another phenomene i spotted was, that everybody of the has the adress written very large on the piece of luggage.
After check in was set up, there was quickly a line forming at both, premier access and normal economy.
As the flight was going on to Washington DC from Dubai, the check in was handled as a normal US flight, with a passport check before check in and all that, but wasnt a big affair actually.
We were quickly checked in and got handed our boarding passes and lounge invitation over.
Security was also here a breeze and we were quickly airside, where we had a look around before heading to the lounge.
Duty free shopping
Not a bad car
A lot of airlines use this lounge
UA uses the Oryx lounge in Doha and although it is large and has nice furniture, the food selection is fairly limited. But as they had a good Schweppes Ginger Ale, i was happy.
Also interesting to see was, that the full UA crew had their dinner in the lounge before the flight.
Light food in the lounge
After some time relaxing, we headed to our gate, where another security check, this time a lot more exactly was performed.
But as this flight only had about 40 people onboard for the short leg back to Dubai, this was quickly done and we were ready to board.
Also interesting to see that the Premier Access bus was a lot more full than the general economy bus, but there were quite a few people of the US Army, who sat up front and filled up a big part of the business cabin.
UNITED AIRLINES DOH-DXB
When arriving at the aircraft, we were greeted by a very friendly crew well in their age, but nice and very professional.
The F/A in our section saw that we were taking pictures and quickly offered to take a pic of us, which was welcomed.
All the flightattendants on our flight were really chatty and it was clear that they enjoy their job.
After a safety demonstration, both manually and on the screens, we had a quick taxi before lifting off into the dark night.
Soon after the seatbelt sign was switched off, the crew performed a drink run and gave out some snacks, which could be chosen from a snack basket.
After that it was time to explore the IFE a bit and even if the screen is quite small, the selection, especially of music is impressive.
I could easily spend a long haul flight with them just listening to music.
Way too soon, the captain announced our decent into Dubai and after about one hour we landed back again in Dubai.
Immigration was a breeze again and an hour after landing we were already back at our hotel.
Qatar Airways is a nice airline and serving a hot snack on an hour long flight is great.
Also they had friendly crew and a well maintained cabin.
I wouldnt hesitate to fly with them on a longer sector.
United Airlines was also great, clean cabin, good legroom and an amazing crew made this short flight with them very pleasant and im already looking forward to the long haul flights with them later in the year.
The next report will cover the short hop over to Muscat in Oman in Swiss Business Class as well as Turkish Airlines on the rather interesting MCT-BAH-IST flight
Thanks a lot for reading.
