Vancouver - Auckland
NZ83
Boeing 777-219 ZK-OKD
Seat 64K

Although the flight doesn't depart until approx 8 PM, spent the morning out at the airport spotting.

Got the new American Airlines livery and once the Air New Zealand 777-200 arrived, we headed back to the airport to return the hire car.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ryanhothersall/sets/72157648301157387/

Once inside the terminal we headed for the Air New Zealand check in only to find it hasn't opened yet.

Check in opened at about 4 PM.

Check in took ages as we had several bags to check in, but was ok, as he had to explain that we had purchased extra allowance when the ticket was booked. Dad managed to get the middle seat blocked so Trevor and I had plenty of room. Dad sat in the aisle seat opposite.

Security was a nightmare as we put our camera bags in the machine and were herded through the metal detector, but our bags were on the other side out of our view which worried us a lot. Then the operators of the x ray machine stopped what they were doing and started standing around and talking in a foreign language, again while our bags were out of sight. This went on for about five minutes. Anything could have happened to my and dads cameras. To top it all off they managed to break the zip on my bag.

Get your act together Vancouver airport, and improve the security setup what I experienced is shameful and causes me to trust the security people even less.

So after that nightmare found gate D54 and got a cold bottle of water and settled in to wait.

Takeoff was to the west in runway 26L and the takeoff was clean and positive, none of this skipping and bouncing like on the way over.

Climb was slow but steady and the occasional bump.

Meal choices are chicken with mushrooms or beef curry with potatoes.

Dad and I had the beef while Trevor went for the chicken. Since Canada and the US are the land of the burger, I had been hanging out for a curry for a while and this one was good.

I generally have no problems with the quality of airline food.

Some pockets of mild turbulence sling the way, but nothing too bad.

Managed a few hours of sleep, but I don't think dad or trevor slept much.

Breakfast options were fruit with yoghurt or omlette with yoghurt.

Dad and I had the omlette while Trevor had a coffee.

Approach was a bit bumpy and could not see much as it was cloudy and still night.
Landing was smooth, but as soon as we landed, the windows misted up, so could not see much.

Once off the plane, it was yet another round of this bloody security game. We did it in Vancouver, and then got on a plane for 13 odd hours, so I see this round of the game pointless.

It's now a waiting game for the next flight.

So I thought I was pass the time checking emails etc with free wifi, but it only lasts 30 minutes and that's it for the day. Once you have used 30 minutes worth, no more.

Continued From Above.

Thursday 12 September 2013
Auckland - Adelaide
NZ791
Airbus A320-232 ZK-OJF
Seat 8F

So when dad went to check the flight times, he was shocked to see the flight had been delayed until 1 PM. The usual departure time is 8 AM.

After whinging about it at first we all accepted the fact we were going to be stuck in Auckland for awhile.

Anyway the delay allowed Trevor and I to see some of the new A320s fitted with shark lets and the all black ones as well as the new Fiji airways livery.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ryanhothersall/sets/72157648724970385/

Some passengers from the delayed flight were transferred to flights via Sydney or Melbourne but that was too hard we thought, especially Sydney, having to transfer from international to domestic, with the terminals being on opposite sides of the airport.

So staying put was the best option. Since the flight was not full after passengers went other ways due to the delay. Dad was able to get the seats rearranged so the middle seat was blocked out and Trevor moved a row behind so he could have a window seat.

Boarding was called about 12:30 PM.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5597/15524120865_ccc5a20d25_c.jpgAirnewzealandA320-232-ZK-OJF by ryanhothersall, on Flickr

Again was able to board early, I was surprised how many spare seats there were, even a few rows were empty.

Takeoff was quite bumpy into cloudy skies, but was ok once out of the cloud. Strong headwind made slow going and a flight time of nearly 5 hours whereas it is about 4.

Meal options were exactly the same as the flight over on August 14. Beef casserole or chicken salad.

Dad and I had the casserole while Trevor went for the chicken salad.

Apart from that a uneventful flight which was good having many empty seats as people can move about a bit.

Was mostly cloudy most of the way, we did over fly Melbourne airport.

Landing was over the sea on to runway 05 in Adelaide. Was very cloudy and raining in Adelaide, so could not see much until fairly close to the ground.

Waited until the crowd went, got a photo of the flight deck. Crew explained how they used the new GPS approach system to land as the 05 end of the runway does not have the ILS system.

Since the flight arrived at a time where there are no other international flights, getting through customs was very quick compared to what it it is usually like.

That interior still looks rather good, despite the age. Did you find the aircraft comfortable? Unfortunately the 777-200s are being reconfigured at the moment and will eventually be 10 seats wide in economy.

Quoting Ryan h (Reply 1):
So when dad went to check the flight times, he was shocked to see the flight had been delayed until 1 PM. The usual departure time is 8 AM.

Ouch, thats a horrible delay, especially since the flight from Vancouver arrives around 0500. Did they say what the cause of the delay was?

Yeah its terrible. You would think they would at least give airside passengers unlimited time for the wifi. Unfortunately not.

Great report! To be honest, I'm astounded that there are not more replies to this TR.

I would really like to try NZ someday; although your experience does not appear to reflect their best showing with that lengthy delay in AKL....

Did the IFE on your YVR-AKL end up working?

Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
