Operation Mriya ADL-PER VA E-190 Return

Thu Jun 02, 2016 12:20 am

The main objective of this trip is to photograph the Antonov AN-225 Mriya. The worlds largest commercial cargo aircraft.

It is scheduled to bring a generator to Perth, where it will be trucked to a mine site.
Scheduled to arrive approx 10 AM local time on Sunday 15 May 2016.

Also since my last visit in 2013, most of the Skywest Fokker 100s have been repainted to Virgin Australia livery. Also since then, the Network Aviation Fokker 100s have started to be repainted in Qantaslink colors.

Also another reason for this trip is have a look at a MiG-21U that is slowly being restored to hopefully fly again one day..

Date: Thursday May 12 2016
Route: Adelaide (ADL) - Perth (PER)
Flight No: VA713
Aircraft: ERJ190-100AR VH-ZPL
Seat: 15A

An early start today. Dad and I got to the airport in good time and my older brothers beaten up old car didn't break down.

No hassles checking in at the kiosk machines followed by bag drop. Judging by the way the people behind us were talking that they had their birth certificates etc, they probably were first time travelers.
Security line moved quickly and no dramas there. However dad was randomly selected for the explosive swab.

Grabbed breakfast which didn't taste all that nice from hungry jacks.

Then it was boarding time at gate 13. Since the aerobridge was unserviceable, a walk across the Tarmac to the aircraft. I was expecting the ground crew to have a go at me for taking a couple of quick photos of the aircraft, but thankfully not this time. Plus it was dark still.

Once onboard the E190 is quite comfortable with a four across layout and good leg room.

Passengers seemed to come in dribs and drabs. Was surprised they were still refueling though, as the crew asked passengers not to put their seat belts on while it was being done.

Took off on runway 23.

A bump here and there climbing through the cloud layer.

Virgin Australia offer a basic snack, tea, coffee or water for free while other food and drink items are for sale.

Free snack this morning was yoghurt and sweet fruit pieces.

Cruise was very smooth.

So was the descent into Perth. Landed on runway 06 as the main runway 03-21 is closed for upgrading the Instrument Landing System (ILS). Some taxiways were closed too, so was quite the Tarmac tour of the airport.

Again the usual get the bag straight away crowd got up and stood there like idiots for a good 10 mins before the door was opened.

Dad and I sat back and let the crowd go.
Had a friendly chat to the captain on the way out about the runway works being carried out at Perth airport and the visit of the Antonov AN-225 to Perth on Sunday May 15.

Got the bag and once we got the hire car it was time to find a good spotting location.

Date: Tuesday May 17 2016
Route: Perth (PER) - Adelaide (ADL)
Flight No: VA722
Aircraft: ERJ190-100AR VH-ZPR
Seat: 16A

Its the last day here we didn't venture far from the airport.

Returned the hire car, no dramas there.
While dad was checking in our big bag, the system stopped. Bag was checked in ok.
However, I was a bit disappointed to see dirty nappies, cotton buds etc lying around.
No line up at security, straight through but dad got the explosive check again while I didn't.

Some random photos of the Virgin Australia terminal in Perth.

Took off on runway 21 just before sunset. Nice smooth climb and a little bit of turbulence in the cruise, but that didn't last long and it soon smoothed out for a while. However, there was another lot a bit later on.

Again, there's the I must be the first off the plane crowd, and they were again standing around for ages.

So we sat back let the crowd go. Had a chat to the crew on the way out. Had my photo taken in the captains seat.

RE: Operation Mriya ADL-PER VA E-190 Return

Hi Ryan.

Now that is what I call dedication: flying halfway across a continent to see a particular plane. But then it was special as it was the first ever visit to Australia, if I'm not mistaken. It was a bonus your being able to see Iron Maiden in town at the same time.

Mriya is certainly impressive although I didn't get to see it arrive. The traffic was chaotic as Perth Airport had really promoted the fact of its arrival. Still, I was able to capture a shot from the Observation Level of Terminal 1 International the following morning (unfortunately from the rear) and coincidently, a Thai 787.

Your flights seemed pleasant enough and you got a good view of the city coming into Perth. Thanks for including shots of other aircraft.

It seems the last few pictures were cut off my report.

Again disembarked through forward left door only.

Since we were the last off and it was quite a walk from gate 13 to baggage reclaim, the ground crew offered us a ride on the buggy.

Got the bag and headed home.

CONCLUSION
Virgin Australia provided a great service to and from Perth, the crew were friendly, and the E-190 aircraft is very comfortable with a 2+2 arrangement, so no middile seat occupant to worry about. Legroom is excellent.

Going on my experiences, I would fly with Virgin Australia again. A big change from when I last flew with Virgin back in 2008 when they were Virgin Blue.

Hey Ryan,

Great report, made for a good reason. You probebly had some problems explaning around why to fly just to take photos of airplanes, we here we all understand

I saw the AN225 in TLV in 2008, sadly it never flew here again since (but we had the 124 last night!).

Thank you for shearing,

How many hours is the flight? Cost?

It seems strange to operate such a small plane on such a long flight?

Flight time to Perth from Adelaide on this flight was 3h 15min. On the way back 2h 30min.

Fares were AU$159 each way. Good considering Perth is fairly isolated from the rest of Australia.

Hi Ryan h

Thanks for putting this domestic trip report up. I really liked your photos, especially the sunset ones in PER.

Quoting Ryan h (Thread starter):
Judging by the way the people behind us were talking that they had their birth certificates etc, they probably were first time travelers.

Interesting!? No other form of ID..

Quoting Ryan h (Thread starter):
I was expecting the ground crew to have a go at me for taking a couple of quick photos of the aircraft, but thankfully not this time. Plus it was dark still.

That was lucky, I know I would have been told to cease!

Quoting Ryan h (Thread starter):
Once onboard the E190 is quite comfortable with a four across layout and good leg room.

I have only flown on the E190 once and really enjoyed it, exceeded my expectations. It is about time I did again. I loved the windows and the space in the cabin. I like the cockpit photos. Great opportunity for you, and to show us that aspect.

Quoting Ryan h (Thread starter):
Again the usual get the bag straight away crowd got up and stood there like idiots for a good 10 mins before the door was opened.

I think if one day that didn't happen I would wonder what was wrong!

Quoting Ryan h (Reply 2):
However, I was a bit disappointed to see dirty nappies, cotton buds etc lying around.

Ew! Maybe the cleaners were on strike or they were short-staffed. Not hygenic at the least.

I understand you doing the flights, and great that you had your Dad to share it with. Nothing could beat it to actually being there.

Cheers =
