SY SEA-ANC Loaded

Thu Mar 08, 2018 5:29 pm

....and now a fourth player on the SEA-ANC route. 7JUN-20AUG 5x weekly except TUE/WED.

Also, STS-MSP is returning this year 29JUN-27AUG, this time twice weekly.

Well, SEA-ANC in summer 5x weekly is nice, but I wouldn’t call that bold. More like a sure-thing.

Besides ANC looks like they are also opening seasonal MSP-STS and SAN-SJD.

MSP-STS 2x weekly from 29JUN- 27AUG (Monday/Friday)
SAN-SJD 2x weekly from 29JUN- 19AUG (Sunday/Friday)

As I posted in another thread, the head of SY route planning as of Feb2018 just left AS route planning, so I would expect nearly all former AS/VX routes added and that's what is happening. Whether that is a good strategy I'm not as sure, but people tend to work from their knowledge base.

How is SY handling aircraft/crew rotations?
With the old model bring MSP (and somewhat DFW) centric, crews and planes were used on turns and day trip missions. Outstation RONs on scheduled trips were rare so hotel, per diem and ground handling costs were minimized.
Is this still the case?

Sorry but I’m not very familiar with SY. Are they receiving new aircraft or adding these routes at the expense of others? Or is there that much slack in their fleet?

SY has 27 737 at present. They don't have room for all those to RON in MSP. They now have RON at outstations. ex MCO, RSW, PHX to name a few.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. So I guess the demand for SEA to ANC and vise versa is infinite...?

In the summer, it’s about as close to a sure thing as you can get.

I believe N824SY will be delivered soon. Flew over to Melbourne FL from AMS on Monday.

Looks like an evening flight in both directions; much better than the B6 timing on the route.

Based on the timing I am guessing the aircraft will go SEA-ANC-MSP and MSP-ANC-SEA.

Could it route MSP-SEA-ANC and then in reverse?

Is this all local demand? I feel like with the frequency on this route, at least half the population of Seattle takes a trip to Alaska in the summer.

I don’t know the numbers, but there is a very strong connection between Seattle and Alaska, as it’s historically been the gateway to AK. That has faded over the years but it’s still very strong.

The route operates close to 30 daily flights during the peak seasonal months. To me, that seems crazy. But hey, if the demand really does exist, than call me crazy. ;)

So it's just were most of us in Alaska connect, and we can't exactly drive very often.

Watch for AS to announce ANC-MSP? The rumor every year is that they're going fly it in the summers.

With SY and B6 doing the SEA-ANC will bring down the fares on some flights this summer.

I don't get it either. 5x a week versus 20ish AS flights, several DL flights, and B6. Lots of competition.

Hmmmm, interesting and I'm happy to see that the new SY is aware of SAN!..NK tried the Cabo route and just gave it up last fall after WN jumped into the market. Their daily nonstop plus multiple daily service on AS -- all year-round I might ad -- make it unlikely that SY will be able to make a go of it but it's nice to see them trying something!
