Do Airlines Use Miles Or Nautical Miles?

Mon Jun 19, 2006 2:14 am

Wasn't sure whether this belonged in the Civil Aviation forum or not, so I decided to post it in here to be safe...

I'm adding up some totals in my flight log and realized that all the numbers I have for miles flown are in miles. Do airlines (or people with flight logs) use miles or nautical miles - or kilometers?

Thanks for any input!

Military uses NM, but you can easily convert between the two. I would imagine that airlines would use NM for their own calculations, but would then convey the information to the customer in miles since they understand that more.

Good question though, because I honestly don't know.

All of my FF plans report miles in statute miles.

This is a good site to compare your numbers with. It will give you the route in statute miles, nautical miles or kilometers:
