Remark Photographer
PH-BFR (cn 27202/1014) "KL868 execute missed approach". I was watching a NWA DC-10 landing and I saw a KLM 747 close behind it. I was already thinking hmm not a lot of clearance. When the DC-10 landed I was already tracking the 747 and when I saw her come overhead I noticed the DC-10 still had not vacated the runway! Shortly after I heard the KLM give full throttle commencing its missed approach. Spectacular to see how fast it can climb! You can clearly see the DC-10 still on the runway. Note photo taken at Rwy 18R. [EF100-400mm]

The thick overcast makes the Boing 747 look as if it is flying into the unknown

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue December 18, 2007:
Nice!

is 18R aka Polderbaan?

A visitor from Singapore posted Thu November 15, 2007:

Love it! love how you can see how flat the runway is. (don't you just love the growl of that cf6 at full power)

A visitor from Australia posted Tue November 6, 2007:
The runway is really spectacular with its lights and all, good view of the plane.

A visitor from Australia posted Wed October 31, 2007:
There is only one word for this shot, and that is PERFECT.
Love everything, the lighting on the 747, the position, the situation, the runway - everything!
Long live the 747, she really is the queen of the skies, always is and always will be. 5 stars!

A visitor from Brazil posted Sat June 23, 2007:
Nice shot!
Is the fact of the runway being under the see level any related with its flatness?

A visitor from Netherlands posted Wed April 11, 2007:
Beautiful shot. And they got the runway that flat because all of Holland is that flat :)

A visitor from United States posted Tue January 30, 2007:
The lighting and everything in the pic is awesome!
Gawd, how did they get the rwy that flat?

A visitor from Czech Republic posted Fri December 8, 2006:
I can feel the power of the engines. It's really amazing - especially with the great lightening! Superb!

I've always wanted to be on a missed approach plane. I just want to be thrown back into my seat and hear the roar of the engines once more. And I have always wanted to fly of the 747! I mean who hasn't!!! ;-)

A visitor from Netherlands posted Sun March 5, 2006:
Beautiful

A visitor from Spain posted Sun March 5, 2006:
Spectacular!!!

A visitor from Costa Rica posted Wed January 18, 2006:
I think is a beautiful shot because it shows the Jumbo jet going around. Not very often this happens. In this case was due to the other traffic remaining on the runway. There is a nice contrast between the colors of sky and the color of the 747. It also shows the power of the 747 lifting all its own weight without any problems.

A visitor from Norway posted Sat January 14, 2006:
Well observed and well done, and I don´t mean the pilots, nor the flight control, who should have acted earlier. What rules apply here??! PE Norway

A visitor from Greece posted Mon January 9, 2006:
Great moment, not only because th photographer caught a "missed approach" but mostly because it's jumbo executing it!!!Fine picture!!!

A visitor from United States posted Tue January 3, 2006:
Great Shot! I bet the pilots of the 747 had a few choice words for the tower controller!

A visitor from Iran, Islamic Republic Of posted Tue December 27, 2005:

Nice shot. BTW this is NOT a missed approach but a GO AROUND.

A visitor from Netherlands posted Mon December 19, 2005:
Hey Nicky! Sweet composition and timing! Too bad we can't hear the 747 screaming ;-) Groeten, en tot ziens! TvP -GreenBaron

A visitor from United States posted Sun December 18, 2005:
Outstanding shot ... reminds me of a BA 747 go around I saw at LHR a couple of years back, as a 737 was late vacating the runway ... this great bird looming out of the cloudbase, gear and flaps down...

A visitor from Chile posted Sat December 17, 2005:
I`m a flight attendant for Lan and the same thing happen to us 2 years ago at JFK. It was amazing the powerful engines sound.

Great picture!! And having a description of the situation makes it even better. Thanks!!

A visitor from United States posted Thu December 15, 2005:
Good decision by KLM!!! It looks to me like the NWA still has spoilers deployed so she is not even close to vacating the runway.

A visitor from Norway posted Thu December 15, 2005:

A visitor from Finland posted Sun December 11, 2005:
WOW WOW!!!

That photo is amazing!!! Good job!

A visitor from Netherlands posted Sun December 11, 2005:
Nice picture! I'm also very curious what runway this is. It's most definitely not the "Kaagbaan (06)", because you don't see the office buildings (WTC) in the background.
If I have to guess it's one of the 18/36 RWY's.

A visitor from Switzerland posted Sun December 11, 2005:
Very rare ... fantastic photo ! How steep KLM climbed.

A visitor from United States posted Fri December 9, 2005:
Extremely clear and shows you a rare occurrence.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Fri December 9, 2005:
The passengers on that plane must have been wondering what the hell was going on!!!

A visitor from Finland posted Fri December 9, 2005:
This is good. I once had to do this too (I fly Finnair A319), but it was a reindeer instead of an a/c.

A visitor from Mexico posted Fri December 9, 2005:
What a drag for the 747 pilots to do a go-around. Was this shot taken from the runway they use to call "the Kaagbaan"?

A visitor from Germany posted Fri December 9, 2005:
Very nice moment captured during this special go-around!

Boeing 747 is indeed great - I wish, though, that Boeing would make an even bigger and more spectacular aircraft in the future. Maybe they will...

A visitor from India posted Thu December 8, 2005:
This really is a fabulous shot. Look at the jumbo lift off. The pilots should have put in a lot of effort to put the bird on flight again after a missed approach. As an airline employee i know how much relieved the cockpit crew would be after pulling away...gbala

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Thu December 8, 2005:
Great Pic Passengers must have been very happy to lose 15min above AMS. Congratulations to the ATC controller.

A visitor from United States posted Thu December 8, 2005:
I always love shots of runways when they're all lit up like that. Also, it's cool to see the 747 climbing like that. A great picture of an old American design and an equally impressive newer one.
